Sweden’s country instructions list 3 Indian degree routes for master’s entry: a 3-year bachelor’s with honours, a 4-year bachelor’s, or a bachelor’s followed by a master’s totalling 4 years of study.
That central route establishes general eligibility only. KTH Computer Science separately requires 28.5 ECTS across named mathematics areas and 22.5 ECTS across named computing areas, while Uppsala Information Systems requires 90 credits in the field, so an eligible Indian award or related degree title does not by itself establish programme fit.
What does a master’s degree in Sweden look like?
Sweden offers one-year master’s degrees worth 60 credits and two-year master’s degrees worth 120 credits. Both belong to what Sweden calls the second cycle of higher education. The Swedish Council for Higher Education defines a full 40-week academic year as 60 higher-education credits and says the system is compatible with ECTS.
| Swedish qualification | Programme length (credits) | Minimum in the main field (credits) | Independent project (credits) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Magisterexamen | 60 credits, normally one academic year | At least 30 credits | At least 15 credits |
| Masterexamen | 120 credits, normally two academic years | At least 60 credits | At least 30 credits |
Both are second-cycle qualifications, but they are not the same course shortened or extended at will. A programme publishes its own award, duration and curriculum. The suitable degree is the one whose subject depth, thesis scope and time in Sweden fit the academic goal.
The 60-credit year explains Swedish programme lengths. It does not create a rule that one credit printed by an Indian university equals one ECTS. Local credits organise the transcript evidence, while the university retains responsibility for assessing equivalence.
The independent-project requirement also changes the academic outcome. The one-year award reserves at least 15 credits for that work, while the two-year award reserves at least 30. That difference can matter to a student seeking deeper research preparation, but it does not make the longer degree universally better. The programme curriculum still decides how much study belongs to the intended specialisation and whether the extra year supports the candidate’s later purpose.
Which Indian degrees qualify for master’s study in Sweden?
The country instructions list three minimum degree routes for an Indian applicant. They do not say that every three-year bachelor’s is accepted.
| Qualification shown on your records | Published position |
|---|---|
| Three-year bachelor’s degree with honours | Listed as a minimum general-entry route |
| Four-year bachelor’s degree | Listed as a minimum general-entry route |
| Bachelor’s followed by a master’s, four study years in total | Listed as a minimum general-entry route |
| Three-year ordinary or pass bachelor’s | Not listed, so do not assume that it qualifies |
| BAMS, BUMS, BSMS, BHMS, Bachelor of Pharmacy in Ayurveda, or Bachelor of Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences | Expressly excluded from the central master’s route |
An honours degree clears only the national degree test. The official master’s requirements give each programme control over the required previous degree, subject areas and English level. A qualifying award can still lack the academic content for a particular choice.
The transcript and diploma also need the right issuer. The Academic Registrar, Examinations Office or equivalent university office must issue them. A college transcript is accepted only when the college is autonomous, and a college-issued diploma is not accepted. Include every semester and any earlier study used for lateral entry.
How can you self-check degree and subject eligibility?
A four-part readiness score can precede the addition of a programme to the ranked choices. It is a document audit, not an admission predictor. Each category earns one point only when the official supporting evidence can be identified.
Application readiness score = degree route + subject evidence + English evidence + requested files
| Readiness category | Give 1 point when | Give 0 points when |
|---|---|---|
| Degree route | Your final or expected award fits one published India route | The award wording is absent, unclear or outside the listed routes |
| Subject evidence | Your transcript and official course material cover every named subject requirement | One named topic or required amount cannot be evidenced |
| English evidence | You have an accepted school or test route at the programme’s stated level | You are relying only on an unaccepted generic letter |
| Requested files | Every programme-specific form, statement or reference is ready | A required programme file is missing or still a draft |
Consider an Indian three-year BSc Computer Science with honours for KTH Computer Science. The degree route scores 1. English evidence and requested files score 1 each. If the transcript cannot prove Discrete Mathematics, the subject category scores 0 even when the degree title says Computer Science.
Worked readiness score = 1 degree + 0 subjects + 1 English + 1 files = 3 out of 4
A 3 out of 4 score identifies the unresolved evidence. An official syllabus, course description or transcript entry can prove the missing subject. Multiplying Indian credits until they resemble the Swedish number would not solve the gap. No central official source publishes a universal conversion, and a planning sheet cannot bind the admissions assessor.
Each programme needs a separate four-column subject map containing the official requirement, the closest course, the local credit or semester value exactly as printed, and the official syllabus evidence. An uncertain match remains uncertain rather than being upgraded by the applicant.
How much subject study do Swedish master’s programmes require?
Programme requirements range from a broad field minimum to a list of named modules. The 2026 examples below show why qualifying for one Swedish master’s programme does not mean you qualify for another.
| Official programme | Published academic requirement | What you should test |
|---|---|---|
| KTH MSc Computer Science | 28.5 ECTS across four named mathematics areas and 22.5 ECTS across three named computing areas | Whether every named area is visible, not whether the degree title sounds related |
| Uppsala MSc Information Systems | 90 credits in information systems or a similar field, plus an application summary sheet | Whether enough of the degree belongs to the field and the extra form is complete |
| Gothenburg MSc Global Studies | At least 30 credits in social sciences or humanities | Whether an interdisciplinary background reaches the stated field minimum |
| Stockholm University master’s entry | General bachelor’s equivalence plus the specific major subject named by most programmes | Whether the live course-catalogue page accepts your major and supporting study |
KTH’s 2026 Computer Science result also shows the difference between eligibility and selection. It admitted 63 of 762 applicants who met the requirements, an 8% programme-year rate. KTH used study results, motivation and previous education. The figure isn’t an acceptance rate for KTH overall or a forecast for another intake.
Gothenburg Global Studies uses a broader 30-credit academic minimum, then selects using prior university credits up to 165. Uppsala Information Systems adds a statement of purpose and relevant merits to its overall appraisal. A lower subject threshold does not mean automatic admission, and a detailed subject fit does not remove selection competition.
Which English evidence works for an Indian applicant?
Most master’s programmes ask for English 6, now also called English Level 2. A few use English Level 1 or Level 3, so the programme description decides the target. The current English rules accept named Indian school routes and approved tests, not every letter written in English.
No, a certificate or letter from your school or university verifying your proficiency will not be sufficient.
| Evidence route | What the central rules require | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| CBSE Class XII | English shown on the Senior School Certificate or Marks Statement cum Certificate from 2008 onwards | The official certificate must establish the route |
| CISCE Class XII | English shown on the Indian School Certificate issued by CISCE | Use the official award, not a separate informal letter |
| Other qualifying upper-secondary study | English plus at least three other subjects taught in English, stated on the official certificate | The route does not apply to a Polytechnic Diploma or Diploma Examination Certificate |
| IELTS Academic | For English Level 2, overall 6.5 with no section below 5.5 | Use an accepted Academic version with verifiable results |
| TOEFL iBT from 21 January 2026 | For English Level 2, total 4.5 on the new scale with no section below 4 | An undated TOEFL 90 rule is stale for a new test |
A general medium-of-instruction or English-proficiency letter from an Indian university is not enough under the central rule. India is not in the named route where 60 university credits taught in English establish the usual requirement. If your school record does not qualify, use an accepted test rather than assuming the bachelor’s teaching language will be recognised.
Can you apply during the final year of an Indian bachelor’s?
Yes, a university may consider a final-year applicant before the degree is issued. The official final-year instructions require evidence for all completed semesters, active final-year status, English and every other requested item by the deadline.
- Submit an official transcript covering every completed semester.
- Ask the Registrar, Examinations Office or equivalent to certify that you are active in the final year.
- State the degree name in its original language and in English when the university writes its own letter.
- Complete the English and programme-specific files on the normal schedule.
- Keep the final transcript and diploma ready for a possible registration-stage check in Sweden.
The university decides whether it will consider the unfinished degree. Stockholm University’s master’s entry page accepts the central final-year evidence route, while the chosen programme can still apply its own subject and selection rules.
If you have finished the degree but the diploma is delayed, submit the complete official transcript and a university-office letter confirming completion and the pending diploma. A teacher or professor’s signature is not accepted for that central document.
How do you apply and rank master’s programmes in Sweden?
Most English-taught choices use UniversityAdmissions.se. Your ranking is the order in which you place up to four master’s programmes in that application. The system considers the first choice first; if you receive an offer, lower-ranked choices are removed. The Sweden university admissions process supplies the portal deadlines and late-change rules for the ordered actions below.
- Search the correct intake. Confirm the teaching language, start term, pace, campus and award on the university page.
- Finish the degree-route check. Match the exact wording of your Indian qualification to the country instructions.
- Map each subject requirement. Use transcript entries and official syllabus material, keeping each local credit value exactly as printed.
- Prepare only requested files. A summary sheet, CV, motivation letter or recommendation belongs only where the programme asks for it.
- Rank up to four choices. Put the programme you would genuinely attend first because the system can offer only one master’s place.
- Pay and submit on time. A fee-paying Indian applicant normally pays SEK 900 for the semester and sends every required record by its deadline.
- Check the result and university message. After the national notification, follow the university’s instructions for tuition payment and registration.
As of 5 August 2026, the live Spring 2027 First round closes applications and rankings on 17 August 2026, with fee status and documents due on 1 September. Autumn 2027 dates were not yet published, so don’t reuse the closed Autumn 2026 calendar.
You upload common academic records once, but programme-specific files can differ even within the same university. KTH Computer Science asks for a CV, motivation letter, two recommendations and an online summary sheet. Uppsala Information Systems asks for its own application summary sheet. Prepare every programme’s files separately instead of copying one generic set across all four choices.
How should you shortlist universities in Sweden for a master’s?
Subject fit comes first, followed by the outcome and cost of each qualifying option. A list of universities in Sweden for international students is useful only after the programme requirements that the transcript can meet are known.
| Decision | Question to answer | Where it belongs |
|---|---|---|
| Degree length | Do you want the published 60-credit or 120-credit qualification and thesis scope? | Programme curriculum and award page |
| Academic fit | Can your official records prove every named subject and required amount? | Programme entry page and your subject map |
| Selection | Does the programme compare grades, prior credits, motivation, work or other merits? | Official selection criteria |
| Money | Can the full tuition and city budget work without assuming a future award? | Sweden study-cost plan |
| Funding | Are you eligible for the actual university waiver and its separate deadline? | Sweden scholarship rules |
| Arrival | Can tuition payment and admission leave enough time for the permit? | Sweden residence-permit check |
The shortlist table describes dependencies rather than interchangeable preferences. A programme that fails academic fit cannot be rescued by a scholarship, and a course that meets every subject requirement can still be unaffordable or lose priority through the ranking system. Joining the six decisions produces a smaller but more credible list. It also gives each retained choice a reason grounded in the award, evidence, selection method, cost, funding and arrival sequence.
Uppsala’s 2026 Information Systems programme illustrates why cost and fit must be joined. It published a total tuition fee of SEK 276,000 and required 90 credits in the field, a summary sheet and an overall appraisal that included previous study, a statement of purpose and relevant merits. Paying the fee cannot repair a subject mismatch.
After graduation, choices about programme length and subject depth can affect the job search, but the immigration step follows its own rules. The later Sweden post-study work route remains separate from any promise made by a course page.
- A three-year Indian bachelor’s is listed centrally only when it is a bachelor’s with honours.
- General degree acceptance and programme-specific subject eligibility are two separate decisions.
- Map named subjects with official records, but never invent an Indian-credit-to-ECTS multiplier.
- A complete shortlist joins academic fit, selection method, degree length, tuition and permit timing.
Frequently asked questions
What if my five-year degree does not award a bachelor’s midway?
University Admissions says the qualification may still be assessed after you complete the portion equivalent to a bachelor’s. Submit all transcripts and a university-issued letter explaining the programme structure and why no bachelor’s certificate exists. This is an assessment route, not a guarantee that the chosen master’s subject requirements are met.
Can I delete a wrong file after uploading it?
Check the file before upload. Once University Admissions receives a document, it becomes an officially registered record and cannot be deleted; you also cannot reopen it inside the portal. Keep the final version locally, compare its filename with the portal listing, and never upload a draft statement merely for safekeeping.
Can I change subjects for a master’s in Sweden?
Sometimes. An interdisciplinary programme may accept a broad field minimum, while a technical programme may name several precise modules. Check the live entry page rather than relying on the new degree title. Gothenburg Global Studies and KTH Computer Science show how widely the required prior study can differ.
Can a BA in English meet the English requirement?
A degree equivalent to a Swedish bachelor’s with English as the main subject can meet English 6, also called English Level 2. Because this route depends on what you studied, verify the award’s equivalence and the live programme’s required English level before relying on it.
Can I appeal a master’s rejection in Sweden?
You may appeal an eligibility decision, but not a selection outcome, late or incomplete status, or cancellation. The appeal must reach University Admissions within three weeks of the date you read the result. First identify whether the decision concerns qualification evidence or competitive selection, because only the former follows the appeal route.
Why am I conditionally admitted after paying tuition?
A tuition-paying applicant can still see Conditionally admitted after payment because UniversityAdmissions.se is not connected to every university’s tuition system. Do not interpret that status alone as evidence that payment failed. Check the university’s payment confirmation and follow its registration instructions or contact it if the condition remains unclear.
