Stockholm School of Economics publishes an 18-month, part-time MBA in Sweden for applicants with at least 5 years of relevant work experience, priced at SEK 645,000 upfront before payer-specific VAT. A self-funded individual pays SEK 806,250, about INR 80.8 lakh, after 25% VAT, excluding travel, accommodation, meals and course material.
For an early-career Indian applicant seeking full-time study, Gothenburg’s MSc in Management is a separate 2-year, 120-credit route with no stated work-experience minimum and SEK 192,000 total tuition for autumn 2026. The executive MBA assumes continued employment, while the MSc uses the national admission and student residence-permit route.
Is an MBA in Sweden the right degree for you?
An executive MBA fits an experienced manager who will continue working, while an MSc fits a recent graduate or early-career applicant seeking full-time academic study. Stockholm School of Economics describes its MBA as a post-experience, part-time programme and says it does not offer a full-time MBA. Its MSc programmes are the pre-experience route.
An executive MBA is a management degree built around the participant’s existing professional work. A management MSc is a full-time academic master’s whose admission is driven mainly by your bachelor’s subjects, methods training and selection record. It can lead to similar business functions, but it is not an MBA.
| Your experience and study goal | Best route to check first |
|---|---|
| At least five relevant years, a full-time job and employer support for study time | SSE MBA Executive Format or another executive programme with current published terms |
| At least five relevant years, but self-funded and based outside Sweden | Executive MBA only after pricing VAT, travel, time away and visa needs |
| Recent graduate with the right business and methods credits | A full-time MSc in Management or a related business field |
| Recent graduate choosing only because the award must say MBA | Sweden’s current executive routes do not match your experience stage |
The degree title is therefore a secondary filter, not the starting point. If you haven’t reached the experience threshold or cannot stay employed through the programme, the executive route does not match your present stage. That doesn’t make an MSc a lesser substitute. It means the MSc assesses a different record and supports a different way of studying.
The SSE MBA FAQ states this distinction directly. An MSc fee cannot make an executive MBA look cheap, and an executive MBA title cannot describe a full-time MSc. The wider master’s options in Sweden remain separate from the MBA comparison here.
Which MBA and management programmes in Sweden can you compare?
The programmes below do not publish the same level of detail. SSE provides a current executive MBA fee and experience rule. Gothenburg confirms its executive format and cohort but does not publish a dependable fee, experience rule or scholarship schedule on the accessible programme page. A missing field is information to request in writing, not evidence of zero cost or no requirement.
| Programme | Format and intended applicant | Experience or academic requirement | Published tuition (SEK) | Published scholarship coverage | Application and immigration route |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SSE MBA Executive Format | 18 months, part-time, working professionals | Minimum five relevant years | SEK 645,000 upfront or 660,000 by instalments, both before payer-specific VAT | Partial up to 20%; narrow full awards | Direct SSE application; participant stays employed and uses travel visas where required |
| Gothenburg Executive MBA | 21 months, part-time, 2026 to 2028 cohort | Not published on the accessible current page | Not published on the accessible current page | Not published on the accessible current page | Executive-education route; obtain written current terms |
| Gothenburg MSc Management | Two years, full-time, 120 credits, English | Bachelor’s plus named business and methods credits; no stated work minimum | SEK 192,000 total for autumn 2026 | Axel Adler can cover full tuition | University Admissions and full-time study residence-permit route |
| JIBS Strategic Supply Chain Management MSc | Two years, full-time, 120 credits, English | Bachelor’s plus at least 30 business-administration credits | SEK 276,000 total for autumn 2027 | Check the current programme scholarship separately | Full-time master’s route, not MBA |
This comparison leaves two decisions before any ranking of business schools. The first is whether you need to remain employed or relocate for full-time study. The second is whether your evidence is mainly professional experience or an academic record with the required subjects. A programme that is attractive on price can still be unusable when its study pace and admission evidence do not fit.
Application routes also differ. SSE first reviews your CV and opens its own application portal only if you qualify. The Gothenburg MSc uses the national system, so your choice order and documents sit inside the Sweden university application process. Search university lists by the award actually granted, not by a website’s business-school category.
What work experience does the SSE MBA require?
SSE requires at least five years of relevant professional experience, a bachelor’s degree or higher and strong English. It is designed for people with full-time jobs, not for applicants trying to replace missing work experience with an MBA. The current application also assesses leadership potential, motivation and fit.
The time demand is substantial. Across 18 months, SSE schedules ten mandatory on-campus weeks, each running Monday to Friday, for 50 in-person days. Three weeks are in Riga, Singapore and Silicon Valley. Between them, SSE estimates about 20 hours a week for digital work, self-study and examinations.
- Submit the CV review. SSE decides whether you can enter the full application.
- Prepare professional evidence. The current application asks for a CV, degree and transcripts, English evidence where needed, and two professional referees.
- Confirm schedule support. Employer awareness and release for the campus weeks matter. A manager can act as one referee.
- Complete selection. A shortlisted applicant may face analytical and personality tests, a video assessment and an interview.
An English test waiver is possible if English is your native language or you completed at least one year of full-time university study taught in English. An Indian English-medium degree does not automatically settle the waiver. The school’s CV review and written decision establish whether it applies.
How much does the SSE MBA cost after VAT and scholarships?
A self-funded individual pays more than SSE’s SEK 645,000 headline fee because the published figure excludes 25% VAT. For the December 2026 intake, that makes tuition SEK 806,250, about INR 80.8 lakh, before required travel, accommodation, meals, insurance and course literature.
The rupee amounts use the European Central Bank reference data for 5 August 2026. EUR 1 equalled SEK 10.9635 and INR 109.9045, so SEK 1 equalled INR 10.0246, rounded here to INR 10.02.
| SSE cost item | Published fee or rate | What to budget |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront tuition | SEK 645,000 excluding VAT | About INR 64.7 lakh before tax and excluded costs |
| Private-individual VAT | 25%, or SEK 161,250 on the upfront fee | Self-funded tuition becomes SEK 806,250, about INR 80.8 lakh |
| Three-year instalment tuition | SEK 660,000 excluding VAT | The private-payer total must add VAT and excluded costs |
| Commitment fee | SEK 65,000, non-refundable | Part of the published tuition schedule, paid at enrolment in the relevant rounds |
| Employer outside Sweden | VAT exempt under SSE’s current payer rule | The identity of the invoice payer can change cost by more than a partial award |
| Travel and stay | No current total published | Budget three international weeks plus Stockholm weeks separately |
The invoice payer can matter as much as the advertised scholarship percentage. A private payer starts from the VAT-inclusive total, while an eligible overseas employer starts from the published fee before VAT. Neither figure includes the travel and stay that the programme schedule creates. The useful comparison is the amount you personally fund after all three effects, not the tuition line on its own.
SSE partial scholarships cover up to 20% of tuition and are deducted from the final payment. You apply to the MBA first, receive an interview invitation, and submit the scholarship application before that interview. Travel and stay remain outside the award calculation.
Full awards exist, but SSE says each normally has one recipient and most target people working internationally within Swedish business and industry. The 2026 Carl Silfvén award was unusually generous, covering tuition and capped travel and accommodation, but its employment and degree-background rules were narrow. Any 2027 award remains unconfirmed until its own page is live.
How does Gothenburg MSc Management work for an early-career applicant?
Gothenburg’s MSc in Management is the stronger format match for an early-career applicant who wants two years of full-time, English-taught study in Sweden. It does not state a professional-experience minimum. Admission instead depends on your bachelor’s degree, subject credits, English and selection position.
The programme requires at least 30 credits across business, economics, human-resource management or labour relations, plus 15 credits in statistics or research methods. These are Swedish credit descriptions, so a self-made conversion of an Indian transcript cannot establish equivalence. The relevant subjects become evidence for the university’s assessment through the Sweden master’s eligibility route.
| Selection group | Current 2026 treatment |
|---|---|
| Group 1, GMAT | Ranked by score; current minimum is 485 on the GMAT Exam or 500 on the older exam |
| Group 2, motivation | Considered after the GMAT group if places remain |
| Group 3, university credits | Ranked by reported university credits up to 165 |
GMAT changes the order in which eligible applications are considered, but it doesn’t replace the academic entry requirements. An applicant who meets the subject and methods conditions can still be assessed without entering the first selection group. The distinction matters because eligibility decides whether the application can proceed, while the selection group decides its position among applications that already qualify.
Current autumn 2026 tuition is SEK 192,000 total, about INR 19.2 lakh at the dated planning rate, with a SEK 48,000 first payment. The current Axel Adler Scholarship covers the full programme tuition, requires Gothenburg as first priority and leaves living and accommodation costs to you. Keeping it requires at least 75% of each semester’s credits.
For a future intake, compare Axel Adler with other current Sweden scholarships only after Gothenburg publishes that cycle’s terms.
How do you calculate payback for an MBA or MSc in Sweden?
Payback depends on the money personally spent and a reasonable after-tax monthly income increase, not a national average salary. Payer, study format and time away from work can change the result before any future salary assumption enters it.
Personal cost = tuition after VAT + required travel and stay + borrowing cost + income forgone − confirmed scholarship − employer funding
Simple payback months = personal cost ÷ expected monthly after-tax income increase
| Worked example | Cost assumptions (SEK) | Personal cost (SEK) | Simple payback (months) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-funded SSE executive route | SEK 806,250 individual tuition after VAT + hypothetical SEK 100,000 travel and stay | SEK 906,250 | 36.3 months |
| Employer-backed SSE executive route | SEK 645,000 VAT-exempt employer invoice + hypothetical SEK 100,000 extras − SEK 400,000 employer funding | SEK 345,000 | 13.8 months |
| Gothenburg MSc direct cost | SEK 192,000 tuition + 24 months at the university’s low SEK 10,525 living estimate | SEK 444,600 | 17.8 months before income forgone |
| Gothenburg MSc with forgone income | Previous row + hypothetical SEK 40,000 monthly net income for 24 months | SEK 1,404,600 | 56.2 months |
The examples show why tuition alone cannot answer which route costs less. Continuing to earn during an executive programme can offset a much higher fee, while leaving work for a lower-fee MSc can make income forgone the largest part of personal cost. Scholarship and employer funding change the numerator in the same calculation, so a headline award doesn’t establish a short payback by itself.
The Gothenburg university estimate currently runs from SEK 10,525 to 17,525 a month. The examples deliberately use its lowest point and hypothetical income figures so you can see every assumption. Replace them with your rent, loan cost, employer contribution, scholarship and conservative post-study income gain. This is a simple planning measure, not a job or salary forecast.
Does an MBA in Sweden qualify for a student residence permit?
A part-time executive MBA normally does not qualify for Sweden’s higher-education residence permit, while a full-time on-site MSc can qualify if every permit condition is met. SSE classifies its executive MBA as part-time, says participants continue working full-time and tells visa-required participants to arrange entry visas for programme trips.
You must be finally admitted to full-time studies in Sweden. You cannot be granted a residence permit for distance learning as a form of study.
Swedish Migration Agency
A full-time MSc is different. Once finally admitted, tuition paid and the other requirements met, you can use the Sweden higher-education residence-permit route. For permits granted on or after 11 June 2026, bachelor’s and master’s work is capped at 15 hours a week during term, with the official exceptions.
The post-study job-search route has its own qualifying full-time programme and permit conditions.
How should an Indian applicant shortlist Sweden MBA and MSc routes?
Build two separate lists, one for executive programmes you can complete while employed and one for full-time academic master’s degrees. Mixing them obscures VAT and income forgone, and it can make the immigration route look interchangeable when it isn’t.
- Write your career stage. Record your full-time relevant experience and whether your goal requires relocation to Sweden.
- Confirm the award and study pace. Save the official title, credits, part-time or full-time status, campus schedule and teaching language.
- Test the correct admission evidence. Use work history and employer support for executive study, or bachelor’s subjects and methods credits for an MSc.
- Get a written total. Ask an executive provider for tuition, VAT, commitment fee, travel, accommodation, scholarship and refund terms. Leave an unknown field blank until answered.
- Run your payback case. Use a cautious after-tax income increase and include income forgone for full-time study.
- Verify travel and residence status. Match part-time campus visits to visa rules and full-time study to the residence-permit requirements.
- Recheck the intake. Current 2026 terms are evidence of programme shape, not a promise that 2027 dates and fees will stay the same.
The broader Sweden university comparison can add city and subject choices once the degree format is settled. Put tuition, living costs and excluded travel into the Sweden study budget, and keep one option that works without a scholarship.
- Sweden’s clearest current MBA routes are part-time executive programmes, while early-career full-time business study is usually an MSc.
- SSE requires at least five years of relevant experience and combines a full-time job with ten mandatory campus weeks and weekly self-study.
- A self-funded individual faces SEK 806,250 after VAT on SSE’s upfront 2026 tuition, before required travel and stay.
- An employer outside Sweden can be VAT exempt under SSE’s current rule, so the payer can change cost more than a partial scholarship.
- Gothenburg’s full-time MSc Management costs SEK 192,000 for autumn 2026 and checks business and methods credits rather than work tenure.
- Only the full-time study route fits the normal higher-education residence permit, subject to every current permit condition.
- Personal payback should include VAT, travel, borrowing, income forgone and confirmed funding, then divide by a conservative after-tax income increase.
FAQ
Can a high GMAT score replace SSE’s five years of experience?
No. SSE’s five years of relevant professional experience is an eligibility requirement, while GMAT is not listed as a substitute in the current Executive MBA requirements. A strong score may show analytical ability elsewhere, but it cannot make a four-year applicant eligible. Wait or assess a full-time MSc route.
Is employer support the same as employer funding for SSE?
No. Support means your employer accepts the schedule and releases you for the mandatory campus weeks. Funding means the employer pays some or all of the cost. SSE does not require funding, but time support matters. Get schedule approval and the invoice payer confirmed separately because the payer changes VAT.
What does the SSE instalment option cost after private-payer VAT?
The published three-year instalment tuition is SEK 660,000 excluding VAT. With 25% VAT, a private individual should plan SEK 825,000 before travel, accommodation and other excluded costs. That is SEK 18,750 more than the private-payer total on the lower upfront fee, before considering the timing value of instalments.
Is the commitment fee paid before an SSE partial award is deducted?
Yes under the current payment order. The SEK 65,000 non-refundable commitment fee is paid at enrolment in the relevant rounds, while a partial scholarship of up to 20% is deducted from the final payment. Keep enough money available early because the later award deduction does not reimburse that commitment fee.
What happens if my Gothenburg GMAT score is below the minimum?
A score below 485 on the current GMAT Exam, or below 500 on the older exam, does not enter Gothenburg’s GMAT priority group. If you meet the academic entry requirements, the application moves to the university-credit group instead. That group is ranked by reported credits up to 165.
When does the Axel Adler result arrive relative to tuition payment?
For the 2026 cycle, Gothenburg told scholarship applicants to wait for the result before paying tuition. An unsuccessful applicant still had to pay the semester tuition by 1 May, with no later payment plan offered. Do not reuse those dates until the university publishes the next cycle.
Do executive-module trips create post-study work eligibility?
No. Travelling to Stockholm and international modules on entry visas does not turn a part-time executive participant into a holder of Sweden’s full-time study residence permit. The post-study route requires a qualifying completed programme and the related permit conditions. Obtain written immigration guidance before assuming module attendance creates eligibility.
How does my existing income change the payback calculation?
If you stay employed during an executive MBA, include only salary actually lost through unpaid leave or reduced hours, not your full current income. If you resign for an MSc, include the after-tax income you reasonably give up. Divide personal cost by incremental after-tax income, not total future salary.
