Immigration New Zealand's NZD 20,000 yearly maintenance requirement is only an evidence floor. The total uses the University's lower NZD 26,000 estimate from its NZD 26,000 to NZD 42,900 range for 52 weeks. The formal academic test has two parts. The award must be in Computer Science or a related subject, and the relevant final-year courses must average at least B. A broad science or engineering degree does not by itself prove adequate programming, algorithms, machine learning or quantitative preparation.
The Head of School can accept an applicant as capable of proceeding through an alternative route. This is discretionary assessment, not a lower published marks threshold. A CV, course descriptions, project evidence and a concise explanation of preparation can make the record easier to evaluate.

Course freedom is valuable only with a coherent plan. Part 1 permits adjacent Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Software Engineering and Electronic Engineering choices. That can support a distinctive pathway, but it can also dilute AI depth if prerequisites, timetable and project preparation are not planned together.
