The Master of Artificial Intelligence is a 180-point, NZQCF Level 9 degree completed across three trimesters in Wellington. A lower planning amount of INR 57.98 lakh covers the selected tuition basis, compulsory charges, living and the visa fee. The University shows a 2026 full-programme tuition estimate of NZD 74,150.

For the Master of Artificial Intelligence, the published route determines the fee basis and application plan. The degree expects prior Computer Science or related preparation. Part 1 combines compulsory AI study with selected AI, computing, statistics and engineering courses. Part 2 is a 15-point research essay plus a 45-point supervised project. Immigration New Zealand's NZD 20,000 yearly maintenance requirement is only an evidence floor. The total uses the University's lower NZD 26,000 estimate from its NZD 26,000 to NZD 42,900 range for 52 weeks. Converted at NZD 1 = INR 56.0236 using New Zealand Inland Revenue's 15 July 2026 mid-month rate. INR amounts are approximate and exclude bank spreads and transfer charges.

The NZD 74,150 figure is explicitly a 2026 estimate for the full programme, even though the next intake begins in 2027. Fees are reviewed annually. Request the 2027 invoice before accepting an offer and do not relabel the current figure as a 2027 fee.

The Student Services Fee is NZD 10.44 per point and capped at 150 points in an academic year. This plan therefore uses NZD 1,566 for a 180-point year, plus the NZD 32 hardship fee. Course materials, equipment and thesis publication charges may still apply.

The VUW Postgraduate International Scholarship can contribute NZD 10,000 for an eligible new full-fee international student in a 180-point master’s. It is assessed with the programme application, but an award is not guaranteed and is therefore not deducted from the headline total.

The cost total uses the lower end of the University’s NZD 26,000 to NZD 42,900 estimate for 52 weeks. Immigration New Zealand’s NZD 20,000 maintenance figure remains a visa evidence floor. A family should test housing and daily costs against the upper end as well.

The INR conversion follows Inland Revenue’s published overseas currency rate. It isn’t a 2027 University invoice.

Can an Indian applicant enter the WGTN Master of Artificial Intelligence?

The formal academic test has two parts. The award must be in Computer Science or a related subject, and the relevant final-year courses must average at least B. A broad science or engineering degree does not by itself prove adequate programming, algorithms, machine learning or quantitative preparation.

The Head of School can accept an applicant as capable of proceeding through an alternative route. This is discretionary assessment, not a lower published marks threshold. A CV, course descriptions, project evidence and a concise explanation of preparation can make the record easier to evaluate.

Standard postgraduate English alternatives include TOEFL iBT 90 with 20 in Writing, PTE 58 with no communication score below 50, Duolingo 120 with no band below 105 and Cambridge 176 with every skill at least 169. Use the current official table for validity and prior-study rules.

The programme requirements and standard postgraduate English rules control the academic and language assessment. There’s no published universal Indian marks conversion.

Three rules that change an Indian application

  1. Related subject still needs relevant advanced courses

    A degree title outside Computer Science may be considered, but the B average is measured in relevant final-year study. Map algorithms, programming, machine learning, mathematics and related courses rather than relying only on the award name.
  2. English-medium study in India is not a general waiver

    The University publishes a limited IIT route with recency and documentation conditions. A general Indian English-medium letter should not be treated as an automatic exemption.
  3. This is not the conversion route

    Applicants without computing depth should compare the Master of Software Development. The MAI starts at advanced level and does not publish beginner programming preparation inside the degree.

Apply by the programme-specific 7 December 2026 deadline for the 22 February 2027 start. Prepare certified academic records, passport, English evidence where required, a CV and the requested explanation of what you expect to gain and why you should be accepted.

Apply through Puaha for the February 2027 MAI, upload certified academic and identity documents with English evidence, CV and programme explanation, then meet every Offer of Place condition before the visa application.

This intake now needs an individual readiness check. Applicants with English results and certified documents ready may still have time. Others should consider the next intake rather than rush an incomplete file.

The application asks for more than marks. The programme’s document list includes a short explanation of what the applicant expects to gain and why they should be accepted. Use it to connect prior computing preparation, intended AI course choices and a feasible project direction.

Certified passport, transcripts and completion certificates are baseline documents. Certified English translations are needed where a document is not in English. The University says postgraduate decisions usually take 3 to 4 weeks, but interviews, project review or further evidence can extend assessment.

After an Offer of Place, satisfy conditions, enrol, pay the required amount and prepare the student visa. Immigration New Zealand needs the offer, tuition evidence, living funds, outward travel, suitable insurance and any required health or character documents.

Occupation ranges cover workers with different experience, industries and qualifications. The University role list and individual project stories do not establish an MAI placement probability, employer guarantee, starting salary or residence outcome.

The research component can produce tangible evidence for applications. Anoof Shaikh’s language-simplification system became a live API, while Richard Kyle’s submitted report covered audio-conditioned image generation. Both are programme-specific examples. Neither means every student deploys a public system or receives an industry client.

George Wiles began the MAI while already working as a software developer at Toitu Te Whenua Land Information New Zealand. His profile supports workplace-relevant upskilling, but it cannot be used to claim the programme secured that job.

Current immigration rules can allow eligible tertiary students to work up to 25 hours weekly. A Level 9 master’s studied full-time in New Zealand for at least 30 weeks can support a Post Study Work Visa of up to three years. Both depend on the rules and visa conditions at application.

Course freedom is valuable only with a coherent plan. Part 1 permits adjacent Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Software Engineering and Electronic Engineering choices. That can support a distinctive pathway, but it can also dilute AI depth if prerequisites, timetable and project preparation are not planned together.

The strongest hidden gem is the possibility of turning project work into a public technical artefact. Anoof’s deployed API is one example, and Richard Kyle’s technically detailed report is another. These should guide questions for supervisors, not become expectations about the output every student receives.

Only two detailed independent graduate accounts were retained, so there is no safe general claim about workload, teaching quality, housing or admission speed. The University’s stated full-time workload is 40 to 45 hours weekly, but no three-account exact-programme pattern independently confirms it.

The drawback is that only AIML 430 is compulsory in Part 1, so the coherence of your AI pathway depends heavily on careful elective planning.
