What is the WGTN Master of Software Development?

The Master of Software Development is a 180-point, NZQCF Level 9 conversion degree for graduates outside Computer Science. A lower planning amount of INR 55.99 lakh covers the selected tuition basis, compulsory charges, living and the visa fee. It runs full time across three consecutive trimesters from July.

The current page shows no fee, so the plan transparently uses an older official NZD 70,000 full-programme estimate whose year is not stated. With current charges and lower Wellington living costs, the plan is about INR 55.99 lakh. The curriculum is fixed. Programming leads into two large development studios and then a 60-point industry research and development project. The usual final route is a local ICT placement, but the School may provide an industry-related internal project instead. There is no course substitution or transfer credit. The University’s official Master of Software Development page provides the structure and dates used here. NZQA classifies master’s degrees at Level 9.

How much does the WGTN Master of Software Development cost?

The full-programme plan is NZD 99,947, or about INR 55.99 lakh, using the older official NZD 70,000 programme estimate with no stated fee year, current compulsory levies, one preferred insurance premium, the University's lower NZD 26,000 Wellington estimate for 52 weeks and the current student visa charge.

The total uses the University's lower NZD 26,000 estimate from its NZD 26,000 to NZD 42,900 range. The separate immigration maintenance floor is NZD 20,000 yearly. Converted at NZD 1 = INR 56.0236 using New Zealand Inland Revenue's 15 July 2026 mid-month rate. INR amounts are approximate.

The exact programme page showed no current tuition. NZD 70,000 comes from an older official flyer and has no 2026 label. Request a current written quote before paying.

The scholarship may contribute NZD 10,000 for an eligible 180-point international master’s entrant, but it is not guaranteed and is not deducted.

Continuous study from July to June limits opportunities to reduce living cost through a long break. Price housing, deposits, transport, flights and project travel separately.

The INR conversion follows Inland Revenue’s published overseas currency rate. It isn’t a 2027 University invoice.

Can an Indian applicant enter the WGTN Master of Software Development?

An Indian applicant needs a recognised bachelor's degree outside Computer Science with at least a B average, basic programming competence and Head of School acceptance. The Calendar normally excludes Software Engineering, Computer Science and similar graduates, plus applicants with substantial industry software development experience.

No universal Indian marks conversion is published.

The public page asks for a CV, which is important because prior employment can affect eligibility. Describe software duties precisely rather than hiding or inflating them.

The University publishes no Indian percentage equivalent for B. Submit the grading scale, complete transcript and programming evidence for individual assessment.

The programme requirements and standard postgraduate English rules control the academic and language assessment. There’s no published universal Indian marks conversion.

Three conversion-route risks

1. Computing depth can make you ineligible

   The degree is designed for conversion. A computing award or substantial development experience is not an advantage under the Calendar exclusion.

2. Two progression checks apply

   SWEN 502 needs a B in SWEN 501. Part 2 separately needs at least a B-minus average across Part 1 or special permission.

3. No credit transfer is permitted

   Earlier programming study cannot be assumed to shorten the fixed 180-point sequence.

How and when should an Indian student apply for the WGTN Master of Software Development?

The programme-specific international page publishes neither an exact July 2027 start nor a closing date. This page uses 1 February 2027 only as a non-official planning date. The actual date remains unpublished. The timetable below leaves room for document checks, an academic decision and the visa.

July timing remains unpublished and the School determines conversion eligibility. Puaha uses certified academic, identity and English evidence plus the CV, and the offer must be satisfied before the visa application.

This intake now needs an individual readiness check. Applicants with English results and certified documents ready may still have time. Others should consider the next intake rather than rush an incomplete file.

The allowances are Nbyula planning estimates, not processing times published by Te Herenga Waka: Victoria University of Wellington.

The CV and transcript need to prove both sides of the fit test. The applicant must have enough basic programming to start SWEN 501 but not the excluded computing qualification or substantial industry depth.

The University says postgraduate decisions usually take 3 to 4 weeks, but this is not a decision guarantee and programme review can take longer. After an offer, prepare tuition, living funds, outward travel, insurance and any required health or character evidence for the student visa.

What jobs and work rights can follow the WGTN Master of Software Development?

The fixed studios and final project support software developer, web and app development, testing and adjacent data roles. Named employer cases are stronger than usual, including internship-to-employment examples, but the University publishes no programme placement rate, graduate salary or guarantee that every student receives an external host or job.

Named graduates and one employer's cumulative hires do not establish a programme-wide employment probability, salary promise, paid-placement guarantee or residence outcome.

The University profiles internships and employment involving Snapper, Avenir Technology, Catalyst IT, Signify and Weta Workshop. Signify reported six permanent hires from programme interns at publication, but without a programme denominator this is not a placement rate.

Independent accounts support a recurring applied team and industry-work pattern. Iris Zhang describes a company-backed AI debugging project, Jeanitte Tong an external-facing website, and Nathan Fa’anana the final internship sequence.

The exact project can be an external placement or a School-based industry-related task. Payment is not promised. Current immigration work rights and post-study visa eligibility remain separately assessed.

This is conditional permission, not an earnings plan. That doesn’t turn work rights or the post-study visa into a job guarantee.

Who is the WGTN Master of Software Development for?

The best fit is a non-computing graduate with basic programming competence who wants an intensive conversion year and applied team delivery. It is a poor fit for a Computer Science graduate, an experienced software developer, anyone needing part-time study, or an applicant whose budget depends on a paid external internship.

The continuous July-to-June calendar is a hidden workload issue. The University states 40 to 45 hours weekly for much of the year, and the sequence leaves no conventional long summer break.

The final placement is usual rather than unconditional. Employer logos and successful alumni should prompt questions about matching and supervision, not be read as a promise of a named company.

What does the WGTN Master of Software Development curriculum contain?

The curriculum is four compulsory courses with no substitutions or transfer credit. SWEN 501 and SWEN 502 run first, SWEN 504 continues through the summer trimester, and SWEN 589 completes the year. Separate grades control progression into the first studio and the final 60-point project.

Every compulsory course

• Complete all four courses in sequence
• Earn at least B in SWEN 501 before SWEN 502
• Earn at least a B-minus average in Part 1 before Part 2, unless special permission is granted
• No course substitution or transfer credit is permitted
• PGCertSwDev and PGDipSwDev are defined early exits after specified Part 1 study

SWEN 501 builds Java and core programming. The two studios add software engineering, teamwork, professional practice, cybersecurity, HCI, web, testing, mobile, cloud and agile work.

SWEN 589 normally places the student in a local ICT business for supervised research and development, but the regulations allow an industry-related School project instead. This caveat changes the meaning of placement marketing.

Should an Indian student shortlist the WGTN Master of Software Development?

Shortlist it if you are changing into software from another field and can commit to a continuous full-time year of programming, team studios and applied project work. The drawback is rigidity. Computing graduates and substantially experienced developers are normally excluded, progression marks apply, and an external or paid placement is not guaranteed.

The applied structure is unusually clear. Independent exact-programme accounts describe company-backed team projects and external-facing systems, while University cases name internship-to-employment examples at Avenir, Catalyst IT and Signify. These are credible examples, not a programme placement rate.

The programme is unsuitable for applicants who already hold Computer Science, Software Engineering or a similar qualification, have substantial industry development experience, need a part-time route, or depend on a paid internship. The fixed sequence has no conventional long summer break and carries separate progression requirements.
