What is the WGTN Master of Laws?

The WGTN Master of Laws is a 120-point, NZQCF Level 9 degree for prior law graduates. A full-programme plan using the University’s lower 52-week Wellington living estimate, charges and visa is NZD 72,733.80, about INR 40.75 lakh. The 2027 offer must replace the 2026 fee estimate.

One page covers every formal route: coursework, the Calendar’s LAWS 593 research portfolio, dissertation with coursework and a 120-point thesis. The marketed routes take two or three trimesters full time or can be studied part time. All postgraduate Law courses have limited entry. The February 2027 intake starts on 22 February and closes on 1 December 2026. The University’s official Master of Laws page provides the structure and dates used here. NZQA classifies master’s degrees at Level 9.

How much does the WGTN Master of Laws cost?

The planning total is NZD 72,733.80, or about INR 40.75 lakh, using the programme’s approximate 2026 international tuition estimate, 120-point services levy, 2026 hardship and insurance charges, the lower 52-week Wellington living estimate and the visa fee. The offer must confirm 2027 tuition.

The headline uses the University's lower NZD 26,000 per 52-week estimate. Its range reaches NZD 42,900, while NZD 20,000 is only Immigration New Zealand's annual evidence floor. Converted at NZD 1 = INR 56.0236 using New Zealand Inland Revenue's 15 July 2026 mid-month rate. Bank spreads and transfer charges are excluded.

All three marketed international routes display an approximate 2026 full-programme fee of NZD 43,700. That is useful planning evidence but not a 2027 invoice. The Offer of Place and enrolment invoice control the amount actually payable.

The 2026 Student Services Fee is NZD 10.44 per point, producing NZD 1,252.80 across 120 points. The plan also uses one 2026 Hardship Fee and Studentsafe premium. Part-time candidates may incur annual charges across more years and should not reuse this full-time arithmetic.

The VUW Postgraduate International Scholarship can contribute NZD 10,000 towards tuition for an eligible new full-fee international student in a 120-point Master’s. It is assessed with admission and is not subtracted because selection is not guaranteed.

A thesis candidate may face research, printing or conference costs beyond published university charges. Add flights, outward-travel funds, accommodation bond and arrival purchases. The upper University living estimate is NZD 42,900 for 52 weeks, NZD 16,900 above the lower headline plan.

The INR conversion follows Inland Revenue’s published overseas currency rate. It isn’t a 2027 University invoice.

Can an Indian applicant enter the WGTN Master of Laws?

The normal route requires an LLB(Hons) or LLB with at least a B average or equivalent, plus acceptance by the director of postgraduate studies. Victoria University of Wellington publishes no universal Indian percentage or CGPA conversion. Research applicants need credible writing and topic evidence.

India-specific assessment uses the LLB award, every transcript page and the institution’s grading scale. The Faculty determines equivalence individually, without a published Indian percentage conversion for the New Zealand B average.

The one-page statement should identify the route and intended courses or research question. A short CV, research and writing samples and two academic references must show legal analysis and writing ability, not only employment seniority.

The higher English routes include IELTS 7.0, TOEFL iBT 100 with Writing 21, PTE 65 with each communicative skill 58, Duolingo 130 with each band 120, or the stated EAP scores. Confirm later additions or exemptions directly.

No GMAT or GRE is required. Professional experience can strengthen a specialist plan, but selection still depends on legal academic preparation, director acceptance, limited course capacity and, for research routes, a viable project and supervisory fit.

The programme requirements and standard postgraduate English rules control the academic and language assessment. There’s no published universal Indian marks conversion.

Three rules that reject weak LLM plans

1. Prior law study is the normal baseline

   This is not a general legal-studies conversion. The published route expects an LLB or LLB(Hons). Any experience-based waiver is discretionary and should be discussed with the postgraduate director before applying.

2. Higher English applies

   The LLM threshold is IELTS 7.0 with no band below 6.5, not the University’s standard postgraduate 6.5 floor. The higher TOEFL, PTE, Duolingo or EAP equivalents on the official page control.

3. Course preference is not enrolment approval

   All postgraduate LAWS courses have limited entry. The application should list alternatives because Schedule inclusion and first preference do not guarantee a place or annual offering.

How and when should an Indian student apply for the WGTN Master of Laws?

The application deadline is 1 December 2026 for the intake starting 22 February 2027. Route and course discussion with the postgraduate administrator precedes a Puaha file with certified records, the statement, writing evidence and two academic references. Limited entry makes alternatives essential.

The route begins with the Law postgraduate administrator, followed by Puaha submission of certified academic and identity records, higher English evidence, CV, writing samples, one-page intent statement and two academic references. Offer conditions precede the student visa application.

This intake now needs an individual readiness check. Applicants with English results and certified documents ready may still have time. Others should consider the next intake rather than rush an incomplete file.

The allowances are Nbyula planning estimates, not processing times published by Victoria University of Wellington.

The University says postgraduate decisions usually take three to four weeks after a complete application, but this is a usual time rather than a guaranteed decision date. Limited entry, research assessment, missing documents or supervisor checks can extend it.

Puaha should use a personal email. The file contains the certified passport identity page, final law award, all transcripts, completion evidence, higher English result, short CV, legal writing and research samples, route-specific intent statement and two academic references.

Coursework applications need preferred and alternative papers. Dissertation or thesis files need the proposed subject, word count, supervisor fit and written clarification of any additional LAWS 581 requirement. LAWS 593 needs written confirmation that new applications are currently accepted.

Admission is followed by conditions, enrolment, payment and insurance. Immigration New Zealand separately assesses the offer, tuition, living and outward-travel funds, health, character and genuine study intentions.

The programme application page controls the intake date, while Immigration New Zealand makes the student visa decision.

What jobs and work rights can follow the WGTN Master of Laws?

The LLM can deepen specialist legal knowledge and research for practice, in-house, policy, consulting, advocacy, writing or academic work. The University publishes no LLM placement rate or salary distribution. Tahatū lawyer pay covers admitted lawyers across experience levels, not LLM graduates.

Faculty sectors are possible settings, lawyer pay applies to admitted professionals, and individual graduate stories do not establish programme outcomes. The LLM does not replace NZCLE assessment, professional legal studies, High Court admission or a practising certificate.

Coursework can widen specialist exposure, while the dissertation, portfolio and thesis routes produce progressively sustained research evidence. Usefulness depends on prior legal qualification, jurisdiction, intended practice area and whether the route matches professional or doctoral goals.

These selected accounts support individual relevance, not typical salary, promotion or admission outcomes.

An overseas law graduate seeking New Zealand practice must apply to the New Zealand Council of Legal Education for qualification assessment and complete the prescribed professional steps. The LLM alone neither grants the protected title of lawyer nor guarantees recognition of an Indian LLB.

A Level 9 Master’s studied full-time in New Zealand for at least 30 weeks can currently support a Post Study Work Visa of up to three years. Completion and current rules control eligibility. The visa does not guarantee legal admission, a law job, sponsorship or residence.

This is conditional permission, not an earnings plan. That doesn’t turn work rights or the post-study visa into a job guarantee.

Who is the WGTN Master of Laws for?

Coursework suits breadth, the Calendar research portfolio suits a structured 90-point research body if currently open, dissertation plus coursework suits one substantial 35,000-word inquiry, and thesis suits a 50,000-word research commitment. Avoid the programme if you need guaranteed paper access, automatic New Zealand practice rights or a 2027 fee already confirmed.

The best route follows the intended output. Coursework shows breadth across selected legal fields. The dissertation preserves a taught component while producing a substantial independent argument. The thesis is the clearest research signal but requires the largest single supervised project.

The first hidden route is LAWS 593 Research Portfolio: 90 points beside LAWS 581 and 20 taught points. It remains in the 2026 Calendar but not the three-route marketing overview, so availability for new 2027 international entrants needs written Faculty confirmation.

The second hidden flexibility is that the coursework route may replace up to 40 points with approved Honours or Master’s study at Wellington or equivalent LLM study elsewhere. This requires director approval and cannot be assumed from a transcript alone.

What does the WGTN Master of Laws curriculum contain?

All routes total 120 points under the 2026 LLM regulations. Coursework uses LAWS 581 plus 110 Schedule points. Dissertation and portfolio routes add 90-point research. Thesis uses LAWS 591 plus any advanced study specified by the director. The LAWS 581 conflict needs Faculty confirmation.

• Coursework: complete LAWS 581 and 110 points from LAWS 520 to 582
• Dissertation: complete LAWS 581, LAWS 592 and 20 further Schedule points
• Research portfolio: complete LAWS 581, LAWS 593 and 20 further Schedule points, subject to current availability
• Thesis: complete LAWS 591 and any advanced legal study specified by the director
• All postgraduate LAWS courses have limited entry and special-topic subjects vary
• The director may exempt LAWS 581 and approve a suitable 500-level replacement

The Schedule is dominated by special-topic codes whose actual legal subjects are prescribed by the Faculty. A code range is not a promise of every imaginable topic. Applicants must use the current postgraduate course list and name alternatives.

The thesis requirement contains an official contradiction. The live study page describes LAWS 581 alongside the 120-point thesis, while the route requirements and Calendar state LAWS 591 plus only any extra advanced study specified by the director. Obtain the signed 2027 plan.

The four routes remain on this one page because they share the same award, entry standard and 120-point total. Their differences are taught breadth, research scale, word count, limited-entry exposure and whether current Faculty approval is needed for the Calendar-only portfolio route.

Should an Indian student shortlist the WGTN Master of Laws?

Shortlist it if you already hold an LLB or LLB(Hons) with at least a B average, can meet the higher English threshold and know whether you need breadth, a 35,000-word dissertation or a 50,000-word thesis. This is advanced legal study, not a practice qualification.

The central advantage is route control within one award. Coursework can broaden specialist exposure, the dissertation combines taught study with sustained research, and the thesis prioritises independent scholarship. A less visible fourth route, LAWS 593 Research Portfolio, remains in the 2026 Calendar even though the marketing overview presents only three. Confirm whether new 2027 entrants can use it.

The difficult parts are limited entry and regulatory separation. A preferred paper can be unavailable, the live study page and Calendar conflict on whether LAWS 581 is fixed for thesis students, and the 2026 fee is not a 2027 invoice. An Indian LLB plus this LLM does not bypass NZCLE assessment or automatically qualify its holder to practise in New Zealand.
