What is the WGTN Master of Computer Science?

The Master of Computer Science is a 180-point, NZQCF Level 9 degree with 120 points of advanced coursework and a 60-point research finish. A lower planning amount of INR 54.62 lakh covers the selected tuition basis, compulsory charges, living and the visa fee.

The University publishes a 2026 full-programme fee estimate of NZD 68,150. For the Master of Computer Science, the published route determines the fee basis and application plan. Students can focus on Computer Science, Software Engineering, Cybersecurity or Artificial Intelligence, combine areas, and include Computer Graphics. These are study patterns rather than named awards. The standard plan is three trimesters, described as 12 months on the overview and 12 to 16 months in the current engineering handbook. How much does the WGTN Master of Computer Science cost?

The full-programme plan is NZD 97,497, or about INR 54.62 lakh, using the 2026 full-programme tuition estimate, the current annual maximum Student Services Fee, hardship fee, one year of preferred insurance, the lower 52-week Wellington living estimate and the current Fee Paying Student Visa charge.

Immigration New Zealand's NZD 20,000 yearly maintenance requirement is only an evidence floor. The total uses the University's lower NZD 26,000 estimate from its NZD 26,000 to NZD 42,900 range for 52 weeks. Converted at NZD 1 = INR 56.0236 using New Zealand Inland Revenue's 15 July 2026 mid-month rate. INR figures are approximate and exclude bank spreads.

The NZD 68,150 tuition is a 2026 full-programme estimate although the next start is in 2027. Fees are reviewed annually, so request a 2027 invoice before accepting the offer.

The VUW Postgraduate International Scholarship may contribute NZD 10,000 for an eligible new 180-point international master’s entrant. It is not deducted because an award is not guaranteed.

A 12 to 16 month completion can create extra housing and insurance cost beyond this one-year plan. Price the actual study schedule, accommodation, flights, deposits and outward travel separately.

The INR conversion follows Inland Revenue’s published overseas currency rate. It isn’t a 2027 University invoice.

Can an Indian applicant enter the WGTN Master of Computer Science?

An Indian applicant needs a recognised bachelor's degree with at least a B average, or extensive professional experience, plus Head of School confirmation of adequate Computer Science preparation. The University publishes no universal Indian percentage or CGPA conversion, so transcripts, grading context and advanced computing evidence are assessed individually.

A general technology job title does not prove adequate Computer Science preparation. Course descriptions, technical projects, code, research and dated professional evidence show the level of prior learning.

The standard English table also publishes TOEFL iBT 90 with 20 in Writing, PTE 58, Duolingo 120 and Cambridge 176 routes with component conditions. Indian English-medium study is not a general automatic waiver.

The programme requirements and standard postgraduate English rules control the academic and language assessment. There’s no published universal Indian marks conversion.

Three rules that change the application

1. Experience does not remove the preparation decision

   The professional route still requires the Head of School to judge whether the applicant can proceed in advanced Computer Science.

2. This is not the conversion master's

   Applicants without computing depth should compare the Master of Software Development, which has a different entry rule and fixed curriculum.

3. Indian marks need individual mapping

   No official Indian percentage equivalent for B is published. Individual assessment uses the full transcript, grading scale and course descriptions.

How and when should an Indian student apply for the WGTN Master of Computer Science?

The programme-specific international page did not publish a deadline for the February 2027 start. This page uses 1 September 2026 only as a non-official planning date. The actual close remains unpublished. The timetable below leaves room for document checks, an academic decision and the visa.

This intake now needs an individual readiness check. Applicants with English results and certified documents ready may still have time. Others should consider the next intake rather than rush an incomplete file.

Course planning should begin before submission because the 120-point range is broad and prerequisites and offerings constrain it. A proposed focus can help the School judge preparation.

Certified passport, transcripts and completion certificates are baseline requirements. The University says postgraduate decisions usually take 3 to 4 weeks, though further academic review can take longer.

What jobs and work rights can follow the WGTN Master of Computer Science?

The University names software engineer, web developer, data analyst, information security analyst, business analyst and systems architect roles. It publishes no placement rate or graduate salary. Named projects and alumni show possible research-to-production routes, but government occupation ranges remain market context rather than promised first-job pay.

Occupation ranges, one alumni profile and a broad graduate-employer brochure do not establish a programme placement probability, starting salary, employer guarantee or residence outcome.

Shaun Burnell’s profile links programme connections to work with an unnamed local technology start-up, where he implemented machine-learning systems. This is one attributed route, not a cohort outcome.

Three independent exact-programme accounts support a recurring applied-portfolio theme. Nipuna Saputhanthri’s Wellington Zoo system is a particularly concrete end-to-end example, while Tianyu Guan’s post also shows that even a Distinction graduate may move directly into an active job search.

Current rules can allow eligible students up to 25 work hours weekly and may support a Post Study Work Visa of up to three years after a qualifying Level 9 master’s. Neither right guarantees employment or residence.

This is conditional permission, not an earnings plan. That doesn’t turn work rights or the post-study visa into a job guarantee.

Who is the WGTN Master of Computer Science for?

The best fit is a computing graduate or experienced practitioner who wants advanced choice and a major individual project. It is a poor fit for a beginner, someone needing a formally named specialisation, or an applicant assuming that a broad employer list, industry-related project wording or strong result converts automatically into a job.

The hidden distinction is between this 180-point coursework-and-project degree and the separate 240-point MSc in Computer Science with a thesis. The award, duration and research structure are not interchangeable.

Course selection is consequential. Maria Fedorova’s data-engineering-heavy combination shows how one pathway can differ markedly from another. Availability and prerequisites should be checked before treating every advertised focus as feasible in one year.

What does the WGTN Master of Computer Science curriculum contain?

Part 1 is 120 approved points selected from advanced Artificial Intelligence, Computer Graphics, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Networks and Software Engineering ranges. Part 2 is fixed at 60 points through COMP 501 and COMP 589. Head of School permission can replace up to 60 Part 1 points with approved external advanced courses.

Every published course requirement

• Complete 120 approved Part 1 points across the published ranges
• With Head of School permission, replace up to 60 Part 1 points with approved 400 or 500-level courses outside Computer Science
• Complete COMP 501 and COMP 589 after at least 60 approved 400-level points
• Take COMP 501 as a corequisite for COMP 589

The range structure is complete as published, but it is not a promise that every course runs every trimester. Request the 2027 course list and check prerequisites before fixing a focus.

COMP 501 establishes the research background, while COMP 589 covers the individual project’s design, implementation and evaluation. The problem may be real-world, industry-related or part of existing research.

Should an Indian student shortlist the WGTN Master of Computer Science?

Shortlist it if you already have solid Computer Science preparation and want wide advanced-course choice followed by an individual research project. The real drawback is that flexibility creates planning risk. Course availability and prerequisites constrain the apparent ranges, and no programme-specific international deadline was captured for February 2027.

The programme can support a distinctive applied portfolio. Three independent exact-programme accounts describe substantial technical work, including an end-to-end giraffe identification system for Wellington Zoo. The official project can address a real-world or industry-related problem, but it is not a guaranteed client placement.

The programme is unsuitable as a zero-background conversion degree, is distinct from the thesis-based MSc in Computer Science, and does not promise a job through the project. The Head of School must confirm adequate preparation, and the University publishes no MCompSc placement rate, cohort salary or guaranteed project partner.
