What is the FSU MS Biomedical Engineering, and what will two years cost?
FSU’s MS Biomedical Engineering is a 30-credit master’s from the chemical and biomedical engineering department of the joint FAMU-FSU College of Engineering. You pay by the credit, and the Fall 2027 out-of-state rate is USD 1,281.77 per credit hour. Across the department’s two-year plan, with living, insurance and visa costs, that comes to about INR 99.05 lakh.
Four of the five core courses are graduate chemical engineering (transport phenomena, maths, computation and research methods) rather than medical devices, and the fifth is Fundamentals of Cell Bioengineering. You then pick a thesis route, which admits in fall only, or a coursework route. This page covers Fall 2027 entry. FSU hasn’t yet published its Fall 2027 I-20 funds table or 2027-28 insurance premiums, so those figures are the 2026 ones.
How much does the FSU MS Biomedical Engineering cost in total?
Plan for about INR 99.05 lakh (USD 103,462) for the whole degree, not the lower yearly tuition figures you’ll see quoted elsewhere. Tuition is 30 credits at the Fall 2027 rate of USD 1,281.77, and living for 22 months in Tallahassee is the bigger bill.
| Item | INR | Local currency | When it is due |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tuition and per-credit fees, 30 credit hours at USD 1,281.77 | INR 36.81 lakh | USD 38,453.10 | Each semester, for the credits you take |
| Facility fee USD 20 and FSUCard fee USD 5, four semesters | INR 10,000 | USD 100 | Each fall and spring semester |
| Living, 22 months at USD 2,545 a month (August 2027 to May 2029) | INR 53.60 lakh | USD 55,990 | Monthly from arrival |
| Books and supplies, USD 690 a semester for four semesters | INR 2.64 lakh | USD 2,760 | Start of each semester |
| FSU health insurance, two policy years at USD 2,797 | INR 5.36 lakh | USD 5,594 | Billed each August, no waiver |
| Application fee USD 30, SEVIS I-901 USD 350, visa fee USD 185 | INR 54,000 | USD 565 | Before the visa interview |
| Total, full two-year programme | INR 99.05 lakh | USD 103,462.10 | August 2027 to May 2029 |
The law also sets a USD 250 visa integrity fee at visa issuance, but we couldn't confirm on 24 September 2026 that it's being collected, so it isn't in the total. The I-20 needs proof of USD 49,944 for the first year on FSU's 2026 table; that's money you show, not an extra cost, and it stays yours. Converted at INR 95.7310 per USD, the FBIL reference rate for 23 September 2026 shown by the RBI. Flights, the housing deposit and fee rises in 2028-29 are not included.
Tuition is charged per credit, so the 30 credits cost the same whether you take them over three semesters or four. FSU’s 2026-27 graduate budget puts off-campus living at USD 22,906 for nine months, which is USD 2,545 a month, and we’ve carried that through the summer of 2028 because you’ll still be paying rent. Living, not tuition, is the largest line.
An F-1 graduate student must take at least 9 credits in each fall and spring semester, with 6 of them in person, but FSU’s international office lets you drop to only the credits you need in your final term. That makes 9, 9, 9 and 3 a legal four-semester plan. If the department’s course timing lets you finish in three semesters, you’d save roughly five months of rent and food, about USD 12,725, but it doesn’t publish a course schedule you can plan that on.
Health insurance is automatic. From 2026-27 every F-1 student is enrolled in the FSU plan with no waiver, so a cheaper Indian or US policy won’t replace it. The 2026-27 premium is USD 2,797 a year, and a 22-month degree starts two policy years.
Don’t budget on an assistantship. The programme page says departmental support is generally not available for non-thesis students, and the department’s handbook gives TA and RA posts to PhD students first. A thesis student who wins an assistantship gets a tuition waiver but still pays the per-credit fees, the flat fees and part of the insurance.
Can an Indian student get into the FSU MS Biomedical Engineering?
Yes, with a 3.0 upper-division GPA in an engineering or allied degree, but the real test is your transcript. The department wants differential equations, biology, chemistry and physics done before you start, and may add up to eight undergraduate biomedical courses that each need a B.
| Requirement | Published rule | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor's degree | Chemical or biomedical engineering, or an allied field, from an accredited institution | Check your degree name against the core courses, not just the title |
| Three-year degree (India) | FSU asks for a degree comparable to a US bachelor's and publishes no rule on three-year degrees | Get the course-by-course evaluation before paying the application fee |
| Upper-division GPA (India) | 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, counted from the term of your 60th credit to graduation | Ask the evaluator to show this GPA on the report, since FSU publishes no percentage table |
| Maths and science | Differential equations plus biology, chemistry and physics sequences before the programme starts | Find each course on your marksheets and note its semester |
| Biomedical prerequisites | A department-set list of up to eight undergraduate courses, each passed with a B or higher | Match your syllabus to biomaterials, biotransport, biomechanics, physiology and bioinstrumentation |
| Credential evaluation (India) | Official NACES course-by-course evaluation; unofficial international transcripts are not reviewed | Order it through the link on your FSU status page once you've applied |
| GRE | Waived for engineering master's applicants; the programme text still says through Fall 2026 | Email the department to confirm the waiver for Fall 2027 |
| English test (India) | IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 4.0 on the new scale, PTE 55 or Duolingo 125 for FSU | Send scores directly from the testing agency; they expire after two years |
| Application documents | CV, statement of purpose and two signed letters on official letterhead | Ask referees who can speak to research or lab work |
| Application fee | USD 30, non-refundable and never waived | Pay it only after your prerequisite check |
| I-20 funds (India) | USD 49,944 for the first year on FSU's 2026 table, documents dated within six months | Get bank letters signed by a manager on letterhead |
FSU doesn’t publish how it converts Indian percentages or CGPA. The Graduate School asks for a 3.0 upper-division GPA and relies on the NACES evaluation to work it out, and it recommends The Evaluation Company (formerly SpanTran) because that firm calculates the upper-division figure. Order the evaluation early, because your file isn’t reviewed until it arrives.
No page for this programme says whether a three-year BSc or BTech-equivalent is accepted. A four-year BE or BTech is the safe case. If you hold a three-year degree, get the evaluation first and ask the department whether it reads as comparable before you pay the USD 30 fee.
Every new student in this department must also sit the SPEAK spoken English test and complete the university’s online TA training, even without funding. Neither decides admission, but both sit in your first semester, and a SPEAK score below 45 means an English course before any TA work.
Six things that quietly sink Indian applications
Aim for 15 May, not the 1 July deadline
The department’s table lists 1 July as the fall deadline, and that date is for students already in the US. For you the line is earlier:“May 15 is the deadline for international students living outside the United States to apply for an I-20 for the fall semester.”FAMU-FSU Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering
The same page asks international applicants to apply by 15 January, which is the date to plan for if you want time for the visa.Expect a chemical engineering core, not a devices course
ECH 5052, ECH 5261, ECH 5840 and ECH 5852 are graduate chemical engineering courses, and only BME 5313 is biology. If your BTech in biomedical, electronics or biotechnology skipped transport phenomena, the department can assign undergraduate courses first. Those don’t count toward the 30 credits, they need a B, and the admissions page warns that departmental financial support may not be available while you take them.
Confirm the GRE waiver for Fall 2027 in writing
The page banner and the July 2026 graduate handbook say the GRE is waived for engineering master’s applicants with no end date. The biomedical section of the admissions page and the 2026-27 bulletin both say the waiver runs through Fall 2026. FSU’s graduate rules no longer require the GRE for master’s, so a waiver is likely, but one email to the department settles it before you spend on a test.
Book TOEFL on the new scale and use Duolingo 125
The handbook and bulletin still list TOEFL iBT 80, the old scale. The admissions page asks for 4.0, which is the scale for tests taken from 21 January 2026. The department also lists Duolingo at 125 for FSU and 120 for FAMU. Apply through FSU with 120 and you’re below its bar.
Pick FSU or FAMU on purpose
The college is shared, so you apply through one university only. The department says the coursework is the same either way, but the diploma comes from the university you applied to, and every fee on this page is FSU’s. Don’t file two applications to hedge.
Ignore the old page with a nine-credit core
A second department page for the coursework route, still live at cbe/biomedical/ms-program/non-thesis, lists a 9-credit core with a physiology course and 21 elective credits. The current programme page, the July 2026 handbook and the 2026-27 bulletin all list five core courses worth 15 credits. Plan on the newer rule.
How do you apply to the FSU MS Biomedical Engineering for Fall 2027?
There are three hand-overs outside FSU, so work backwards from 15 May 2027, the date by which applicants living outside the US must apply for their I-20. The department encourages international applicants to apply by 15 January, and that’s the safer target.
You sit the English test, your college issues the transcripts, a NACES evaluator converts them into a US-style transcript with an upper-division GPA, and the department reads the file for prerequisites. After admission, FSU's Center for Global Engagement issues the I-20, and the US consulate in India handles the F-1 interview.
| Start by | Task | Takes | Why this date |
|---|---|---|---|
| 01 Feb 2027 | Sit IELTS, TOEFL, PTE or Duolingo | 45 days | Preparation plus the official score reaching FSU from the testing agency. |
| 02 Feb 2027 | Audit your transcript against the prerequisites | 14 days | Differential equations, the three sciences and the biomedical course list decide whether extra courses come first. |
| 16 Feb 2027 | Write the SOP and collect two signed letters | 30 days | The department wants research and career goals, and letters on official letterhead. |
| 18 Mar 2027 | Submit the FSU application and pay USD 30 | 7 days | The file is complete only when every document is in and the fee is paid. |
| 25 Mar 2027 | Order the NACES course-by-course evaluation | 30 days | FSU shows the evaluation link on your status page, and it won't review the file until the report arrives. |
| 24 Apr 2027 | Prepare bank letters for the I-20 | 21 days | Letters must be on letterhead, signed by a manager and dated within six months. |
The allowances are Nbyula planning estimates, not processing times published by Florida State University.
Only the coursework route admits in spring and summer as well as fall, and the department’s handbook says spring and summer starts need prior contact with the department. The thesis route is fall only. If you want the thesis, Fall 2027 is the entry, and you’ll need to find a faculty advisor by the end of your first semester.
Admission is term-specific, so if your visa slips past August you reapply rather than defer. That’s the reason to treat 15 January as your own deadline and 15 May as the last safe date, not the other way round.
What jobs and salaries follow the FSU MS Biomedical Engineering?
FSU doesn’t publish a placement rate or employer list for this master’s. The useful evidence is national. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median bioengineer’s wage at USD 109,370 in May 2025, and the degree is on the STEM list, so you can work up to 36 months on OPT.
| Measure | Figure | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Programme placement rate | Not published | Checked the programme page, admissions page, July 2026 handbook and the department's 2024 annual report. |
| Median wage, US | USD 109,370 | All bioengineers and biomedical engineers, May 2025, BLS. Not FSU graduates. |
| Median wage, research employers | USD 125,160 | Research and development services, the highest-paying industry BLS lists for this job. |
| Job growth | 8%, 2025 to 2035 | BLS projection, described as much faster than average. |
| Openings a year | About 1,200 | Across the whole US, from 23,800 jobs. A small field for sponsorship. |
| OPT after the degree | 12 + 24 months | CIP 14.0501 is on the DHS STEM list dated 22 July 2024, so STEM OPT adds 24 months. |
| H-1B master's cap | 20,000 extra | Reserved for US master's graduates, with the lottery weighted by wage level since FY 2027. |
| Cohort size | 8 degrees | Master's degrees in Biomedical Engineering awarded by FSU in 2024-25, FSU Fact Book. |
The wage and growth rows describe the occupation across the US, not this programme. FSU's own figures stop at cohort size.
The STEM status is checked, not assumed. FSU’s international office lists “Biomedical Engineering – Master’s, Doctorate (14.0501)”, and 14.0501 Bioengineering and Biomedical Engineering is on the current DHS STEM list. That gives 12 months of OPT and a 24-month extension, provided your employer is enrolled in E-Verify and you file on time.
The H-1B picture has two live conditions. The USD 100,000 payment set by the 2025 proclamation doesn’t apply to a change of status granted inside the US, and a court order has blocked it since June 2026, but USCIS says DHS still plans to collect it if that order is lifted. A separate DHS proposal from August 2026 would add a USD 103,265 fee to every cap-subject petition, including US master’s cases, if it becomes final.
BLS notes that leading a research team typically needs a graduate degree, which suits the thesis route. With about 1,200 openings a year nationwide and most jobs in medical equipment and research and development firms, expect a narrower US job search than an Indian electrical or computer science graduate would face.
Where does FSU rank for engineering and life sciences?
Rankings are context here, not an admission rule. Times Higher Education places FSU at 251-300 for both engineering and life sciences in 2026, which is higher than its overall position. No ranking body we could read ranks this biomedical master’s on its own.
| Publisher | Position | Table and year |
|---|---|---|
| Times Higher Education | 251-300 | World University Rankings by subject 2026, Engineering |
| Times Higher Education | 251-300 | World University Rankings by subject 2026, Life Sciences |
| Times Higher Education | 301-350 | World University Rankings 2026, overall |
| QS | #549 | QS World University Rankings 2026, overall |
Who should apply to the FSU MS Biomedical Engineering, and who shouldn't?
Match your own transcript to a row before paying for the evaluation. The programme suits engineers who already have transport phenomena and differential equations on their marksheets, and it's a poor fit for anyone needing funding or a curriculum built around medical devices.
| Verdict | Your background | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Strong fit | BE or BTech in biomedical or chemical engineering with transport phenomena and a 3.0 upper-division GPA | You'll clear the prerequisite check and the chemical engineering core builds straight on your degree. |
| Strong fit | Engineer aiming at tissue engineering, biomaterials or MRI research, thinking of a PhD later | The thesis route, the NHMFL imaging course and the journal manuscript requirement all point that way. |
| Needs evidence | BTech in biotechnology or electronics and instrumentation | Allied fields are accepted, but expect B-grade undergraduate courses in transport or biomaterials before the core. |
| Needs evidence | Three-year BSc in life sciences with maths up to differential equations | Only the credential evaluation can say whether FSU reads it as a comparable degree. |
| Do not shortlist | B.Pharm, MBBS or BSc graduate with no differential equations course | The department requires differential equations before the programme starts, in all cases. |
| Do not shortlist | Anyone who needs an assistantship to afford the degree | Coursework students generally get no department support, and PhD students get first preference for TA and RA posts. |
If you want medical device design or regulatory affairs, compare this with programmes that make those core. Here they’re electives at best, and the required courses are transport, maths, computation and cell bioengineering.
What will you study in the FSU MS Biomedical Engineering?
Both routes need 30 credit hours, starting with the same 15-credit core. The thesis route adds 9 elective credits and 6 thesis credits, and the coursework route adds 15 elective credits, at least 6 of them from the biomedical list.
| Code | Component | Credit hours | Where it sits |
|---|---|---|---|
| ECH 5052 | Research Methods in Chemical Engineering | 3 | Core, both routes |
| ECH 5261 | Advanced Transport Phenomena I | 3 | Core, both routes |
| ECH 5840 | Advanced Chemical Engineering Mathematics I | 3 | Core, both routes |
| ECH 5852 | Advanced Chemical Engineering Computations | 3 | Core, both routes |
| BME 5313 | Fundamentals of Cell Bioengineering | 3 | Core, both routes |
| BME 5XXX | Advanced Biomaterials | 3 | Typical biomedical elective |
| BME 5142 | Soft Matter Characterization | 3 | Typical biomedical elective |
| BME 5314 | Bioengineering | 3 | Typical biomedical elective |
| BME 5362 | Neural Engineering | 3 | Typical biomedical elective |
| BME 5937r | Special Topics in Biomedical Engineering | 3 | Typical biomedical elective |
| BME 6530 | NMR and MRI Methods in Biology and Medicine | 3 | Typical biomedical elective |
| BME 5971 | Thesis Research | 6 | Thesis route only, graded S or U |
| BME 8976 | Thesis Defense | 0 | Thesis route only, oral examination |
| BME 5935 | Biomedical Engineering Seminar | 0 | Every fall and spring, both routes |
| Total for the degree | 30 |
- Thesis route is 15 core, 9 elective and 6 thesis credits, plus an oral defence and one journal-ready manuscript.
- The coursework route drops the thesis and takes 15 elective credits instead.
- At least 6 elective credits must come from the biomedical list; any engineering course at 5000 level or above also counts as an elective.
- No grade below C counts, and only one C counts toward the degree.
The department’s approved elective list flags ten biology courses that count as biomedical electives, among them Advanced Cell Biology, Mammalian Physiology I and II, Neurophysiology and Cell and Molecular Neuroscience, and it also lists a College of Medicine course on the immune response to infection and cancer. That’s how a coursework student builds a physiology or neuroscience slant.
Transfer credit is capped at six hours with department approval. Every master’s student also takes safety training that includes Biosafety Level 2, whichever route you choose.
Should you shortlist the FSU MS Biomedical Engineering?
Shortlist it if your degree already covers differential equations and transport phenomena and you want cell, tissue or imaging work, and only then. The department reads your transcript course by course and can hand you undergraduate prerequisites that each need a B.
What you get is a small, research-heavy department (it awarded 8 biomedical master's degrees in 2024-25) with labs at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory and electives that reach into physiology, neuroscience and the College of Medicine. What it costs you is breadth. There's no required course in medical devices, regulation or instrumentation, and the core is closer to a chemical engineering master's than to what most Indian BME students expect.
Two things are genuinely hard here. The money is almost all yours, because the department says non-thesis students generally get no support and gives assistantships to PhD students first. And the field is small in the US, with about 1,200 openings a year for bioengineers and biomedical engineers nationally, so an F-1 graduate needing an employer to sponsor an H-1B is competing for very few seats. If you want a funded master's or a quick route into US medical device jobs, this isn't it.

Frequently asked questions
What is the total cost of MS Biomedical Engineering at FSU for Indian students?
Plan for about INR 99.05 lakh, or USD 103,462, for the two-year degree. That covers 30 credits at USD 1,281.77 each, semester fees, 22 months of Tallahassee living at FSU's estimate, books, compulsory FSU health insurance and the application, SEVIS and visa fees. Flights and the housing deposit are extra.
Is GRE required for MS Biomedical Engineering at FSU?
No. The department says the GRE is waived for engineering master's applicants, and FSU no longer requires it for master's programmes. The biomedical section of the admissions page still says the waiver runs through Fall 2026, so email the department and get the Fall 2027 position in writing before you decide.
What is the last date to apply to FSU MS Biomedical Engineering for Fall 2027?
If you live outside the US, 15 May 2027 is the department's deadline to apply for an I-20 for fall. The 1 July date in its table is too late for a visa. The department encourages international applicants to apply by 15 January, which leaves time for the evaluation and interview.
Can I apply to FSU biomedical engineering with a biotechnology or electronics BTech?
Yes, allied fields are accepted, but the department reads your transcript course by course. You must already have differential equations and biology, chemistry and physics sequences. It can then assign undergraduate courses such as biotransport or biomaterials, each needing a B, and those don't count toward the 30 credits.
Does FSU accept a three-year degree for MS Biomedical Engineering?
FSU doesn't say either way. It asks for a degree comparable to a US bachelor's with a 3.0 upper-division GPA, and a NACES course-by-course evaluation decides comparability. Get that evaluation before paying the USD 30 application fee. A four-year BE or BTech is the safe case for this programme.
Can I get an assistantship or scholarship in FSU MS Biomedical Engineering?
Don't plan on one. The programme page says departmental support is generally not available for non-thesis students, and the handbook gives teaching and research assistantships to PhD students first. Some funding may reach competitive thesis students, and an assistantship brings a tuition waiver, but fees and part of insurance stay yours.
Is FSU MS Biomedical Engineering a STEM course for OPT?
Yes. FSU lists the master's under CIP code 14.0501, Bioengineering and Biomedical Engineering, which is on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List dated 22 July 2024. That allows 12 months of OPT plus a 24-month STEM extension, provided your employer uses E-Verify and you file within the deadlines.
Should I choose the thesis or non-thesis option at FSU?
Choose the thesis if you want research or a PhD and can start in fall, since the thesis route admits only then. It needs a faculty advisor by the end of your first semester, a defence and a journal-ready manuscript. The coursework route suits a direct job search, but expect to fund it fully.
