What is the FSU MS Information, and what does it cost an Indian student?

FSU’s Master of Science in Information is a 36-credit library and information science degree, and its Information major is accredited by the American Library Association. Tuition is charged by the credit, at the Fall 2027 rate of USD 1,281.77 per credit hour. Twelve courses over two years, with living, insurance and visa costs, come to about INR 106.41 lakh.

Two majors sit inside the one degree. The Information major is the library route, built on research, information policy, management and information organisation, while the Information Science and Technology major swaps two of those for systems courses and isn’t ALA-accredited. The Tallahassee version is a hybrid, with most classes live on Zoom in the evening and two face-to-face each Fall and Spring. This page covers the Fall 2027 intake. FSU hasn’t yet published its Fall 2027 insurance premium, a Fall 2027 I-20 funds table or which courses will run face-to-face in 2027-28.

How much does the FSU MS Information cost in total?

Plan on about INR 106.41 lakh, or USD 111,153, for the whole degree. The USD 672.40 market rate isn’t your default rate, since it covers only fully online LIS courses and FSU hasn’t said it applies to F-1 students. The total uses 36 credits at the Fall 2027 rate, 22 months of living, insurance and visa costs.

The I-20 needs proof of USD 49,944 for the first year on FSU's 2026 table, which is cash-flow evidence that stays your money, not an extra cost. The USD 250 visa integrity fee is in US law, but we couldn't confirm on 24 September 2026 that it's being collected, so it isn't in the total. Converted at INR 95.7310 per USD, the FBIL reference rate for 23 September 2026 shown on rbi.org.in. Flights, the online class fee and any market rate discount are not included.

The tuition row is FSU’s full per-credit charge for an out-of-state graduate. It was USD 1,278.04 for 2026-27, and the Board of Trustees approved USD 1,281.77 from Fall 2027 on 28 August 2026. The state sets the tuition part, so 2028-29 can move again, and FSU’s international office tells students to allow for rises of up to 15% a year.

Thirty-six credits divide cleanly into twelve 3-credit courses and four semesters of 9, which is FSU’s standard I-20 load, so nothing is added for rounding. A thesis doesn’t change the count either, because its 6 credits sit inside the 36.

The market rate is the one cost fact only this degree has. The iSchool offers USD 672.40 per credit hour to out-of-state MSI students whose home state isn’t in the Academic Common Market, on fully online 5000-level LIS courses and nothing else. An F-1 student takes about 12 online credits over four semesters, so if FSU applies it to you the saving is roughly USD 7,600, about INR 7.30 lakh. The handbook frames eligibility by US state of residence and never mentions F-1 students, so get a written answer from iSchool Student Services before you count on it. You also lose it the moment you take an assistantship.

Online classes also carry an auxiliary fee. The iSchool lists USD 1,308.04 per online credit hour for a non-resident living in Leon County, where Tallahassee is, about USD 30 above the campus rate, which would add roughly USD 360 over 12 online credits. It isn’t in the total because FSU doesn’t state the fee on its own.

The 22 months run from arrival in August 2027 to May 2029 and include Summer 2028 living. FSU lets a continuing F-1 student take only online classes in summer, so 9 online credits in Summer 2028 would let you finish in December 2028 and spend about USD 13,400 less, if the summer rotation offers courses you still need.

Health insurance isn’t optional. From 2026-27 FSU enrols every F-1 student in its own plan with no waiver, at USD 2,797 a year. Funding is thin, too. The iSchool’s assistantships waive only the in-state matriculation part of tuition, the handbook gives no count of awards, and the Graduate School calls assistantship funds very limited. Budget for the full amount.

Can an Indian graduate meet the FSU MS Information entry rules?

Yes, and more easily than for most FSU master’s, because the MSI sets no subject prerequisite. You need a degree FSU judges comparable to a US bachelor’s, a 3.0 GPA over roughly your final two years, and TOEFL 96 on the old scale, 4.5 on the new one, or IELTS 6.5. The MSI application list has no GRE.

Any bachelor’s subject can apply. Neither the MSI page nor the iSchool handbook sets a subject requirement, and FSU’s 2024-25 bulletin applies its 12-credit IT rule to the MSIT alone. That makes this the one iSchool master’s a BA in English or a BCom graduate can realistically enter, and the school steers such students to LIS 5485 Introduction to Information Technologies as their technology course. The current rotation runs LIS 5485 only in Spring.

Indian files most often lose time on documents. FSU accepts a transcript only when it comes from the university or the evaluator, never from you, and it won’t take notarised copies. Ask your university early for sealed marksheets and the degree or provisional certificate, since the evaluator can’t start without them.

Backlogs aren’t named anywhere in FSU’s rules, which is itself the answer to plan around. The Graduate School’s GPA rule covers all work attempted in the upper division, so a paper you failed and later cleared is likely to be averaged in twice by the evaluator. That’s our reading of the rule, not a published FSU policy, and a clean final two years is the safest file.

The GRE sits in an odd place. The current MSI page doesn’t ask for it and FSU has no university-wide test rule for master’s, but the 2024-25 bulletin still says the GRE is preferred, and the handbook lists entrance exam scores among the factors for assistantship appointments. A GRE won’t get you admitted, and it may help only if you’re competing for one of those posts.

Six rules that catch Indian MSI applicants

  1. Apply by 15 January, not the 1 July on the MSI page

The programme page lists “Fall: July 1”, which suits applicants already in the US. The Graduate School tells international applicants
“FSU has a priority international deadline to receive applications by January 15th for consideration.”FSU Graduate School, international admissions
A decision in July leaves no room for the I-20, the SEVIS payment and a visa slot before August classes begin.
  2. Take both face-to-face classes every Fall and Spring

    The iSchool’s rotation schedule says
“Two face-to-face classes will be offered every fall and spring semester.”FSU School of Information, course rotation schedule
FSU needs 6 of your 9 credits in person each regular term, so an F-1 student takes both. The library major’s free electives accept every master’s-level LIS course, so nearly every classroom course you’re given will count. The risk is a repeat, since a course you’ve already passed can’t count twice. Email ischooladvising@cci.fsu.edu before you accept and ask which courses met face-to-face in the last two years.
  3. Choose the Information major if you want a library job

The handbook describes the second major as designed for non-Florida residents interested in IT, and adds
“this major is NOT ALA-accredited”FSU School of Information, Master’s and Specialist Handbook 2026-27
The American Library Association says most employers require an ALA-accredited master’s for professional library posts. A diploma in Information Science and Technology can shut you out of the jobs this degree exists for.
  4. Score TOEFL 96, not the university's 80

FSU’s Graduate School minimum is iBT 80, or 4.0 on the new scale. The MSI page sets “TOEFL iBT (taken before January 21, 2026): Minimum Total Score of 96” and 4.5 after that date. IELTS 6.5 and Duolingo 125 match the university bar. PTE isn’t on the MSI list, and an English-medium Indian degree doesn’t earn a waiver, so confirm PTE with the department before you book it.

  5. A three-year degree is decided by the evaluation, not by FSU's website

No FSU page says whether a three-year Indian bachelor’s is comparable to a US degree, and the iSchool is silent on it too. FSU asks for a comparable degree, a 3.0 upper-division GPA and a NACES course-by-course evaluation, and the evaluation settles it. Get it done before you pay the USD 30 fee. A four-year degree, or a three-year degree followed by a completed master’s, is the safe case.

  6. The GPA counts from your 60th credit, not your whole degree

    The MSI page says
“The upper division GPA is comprised of the grades of the courses taken in the semester where the 60th credit hour is earned and beyond.”FSU School of Information, MSI admissions
For a typical Indian degree that’s roughly the second half. A weak first year matters less than a weak final year, and FSU publishes no percentage or CGPA equivalent of 3.0, so ask the evaluator for the converted figure before applying.

How and when should you apply for the FSU MS Information for Fall 2027?

You deal with four parties in turn, the test body, a credential evaluator, FSU and the US consulate, and the first two work to their own clocks. Count back from the 15 January 2027 international priority date. The MSI page’s 1 July Fall date is meant for applicants who don’t need a student visa.

Apply on FSU's graduate application portal under the plan Information MS, pay the USD 30 fee, complete the School of Information departmental application, and send transcripts through a NACES course-by-course evaluation.

08 Jan 2027Submit the FSU application7 daysChoose the plan Information MS, pay USD 30 and complete the School of Information departmental application.

The allowances are Nbyula planning estimates, not processing times published by Florida State University.

The Graduate School holds any file with non-US transcripts until the credential evaluation arrives, and only then does the iSchool review the application as a whole. The published list has no recommendation letters and no interview, so the statement of purpose carries most of the weight after your GPA.

Before you write it, the iSchool is running two Zoom information sessions on the MSI, on 1 October 2026 at 12 noon and 13 November 2026 at 11.30 am Eastern time, which is 9.30 pm and 10 pm in India. They’re a good place to ask about the face-to-face schedule and the market rate.

Say in the statement which major you’re aiming for and why. The application plan is simply Information MS, and the handbook treats the two majors as routes inside one degree, so the reviewers learn your intent only from what you write. If you’re a commerce or humanities graduate, a line on how you’ll build technology skills, through LIS 5485 for instance, answers the obvious question before they ask it.

After an admit, FSU’s international office issues the I-20 once you show the first-year funds, and then you pay the USD 350 SEVIS fee and book a visa interview. Admission is for one term only, so missing Fall 2027 means applying again rather than deferring.

Why 1 July is too late for you

A 1 July application gets a decision in July at best. An Indian F-1 student still needs the I-20, the SEVIS payment and a consulate appointment after that, all before classes begin in late August, so 15 January is the date to plan around.

What jobs and pay can you expect after the FSU MS Information?

FSU publishes one outcome figure for this degree, and it comes from the school itself. The iSchool reports that 96.2% of its 2024-25 MSI graduates were employed in their field, without saying how it measured that. For pay, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the May 2025 median for librarians at USD 68,270 across all experience levels.

OPT plus STEM OPT12 + 24 monthsCIP 11.0401 is on the DHS STEM list
H-1B at a universityCap-exemptUSCIS rule for institutions of higher education

BLS figures are national medians for whole occupations, not FSU graduate pay. The 96.2% figure covers all MSI graduates, most of them part-time online students already in work.

The STEM extension surprises most readers of a library degree. FSU lists both MSI majors under CIP 11.0401, Information Science/Studies, and that code is on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List dated 22 July 2024. With 12 months of OPT and the 24-month extension you’d have up to three years of US work authorisation, if the I-20 carries that code.

The visa route that suits this degree is a university library. USCIS says H-1B workers employed at an institution of higher education or its related nonprofits are not subject to the annual cap, so an academic library can sponsor you without the lottery. A city or county public library doesn’t fall under that wording, and there you’d face the wage-weighted lottery like any other employer.

The 96.2% needs reading carefully. In Fall 2026, 212 of the 286 MSI students were part-time, and many already work in libraries while they study online. A full-time F-1 graduate starting from scratch in the US isn’t who that figure describes, and FSU doesn’t publish a campus-only or international figure.

Pay varies a lot by employer type. BLS gives one national median for librarians, but academic, law and special libraries recruit differently from public ones, and FSU runs a joint JD and MS pathway aimed squarely at law library work. For an Indian graduate, a university library is the practical first target, both for the ALA credential and for the H-1B exemption.

The iSchool lists roles well beyond libraries, including metadata analyst, archivist, web analytics manager, systems analyst and information architect, but it names no employers. Treat the technology roles as a stretch unless you load your electives with database, data mining and security courses.

Where does Florida State University rank, and does it matter for the MSI?

No ranking body's table we could open ranks FSU's MSI on its own, so the university's overall position is context, never an admission rule. QS places FSU at 549 in its 2026 world table and Times Higher Education places it in the 301 to 350 band for 2026.

Who should apply to the FSU MS Information, and who shouldn't?

The clearest fit is a graduate of any subject who wants a US academic, research or special library career and is willing to study the ALA-accredited Information major. It's a poor fit for an engineer chasing IT pay, for anyone who needs to repay a large loan quickly, and for anyone counting on an assistantship.

VerdictYour backgroundWhy
Strong fitHumanities, science or commerce graduate aiming for academic or research library work in the USThere's no subject prerequisite, and the Information major carries the ALA accreditation those employers look for.
Strong fitBLISc holder or Indian university library staff member moving into cataloguing or metadata rolesCataloguing, metadata and digital library courses run on the rotation, and university libraries can sponsor an H-1B outside the lottery.
Needs evidenceGraduate who wants data or UX work but likes the information sideDatabase, data mining and usability electives exist, but the technology major has almost no students and loses the ALA credential.
Needs evidenceThree-year BA, BSc or BCom graduate with no master'sEntry rests on the credential evaluation, and FSU doesn't say in advance how it treats a three-year degree.
Do not shortlistBTech CSE or IT graduate aiming for software or IT jobsThe core is research, policy and information organisation, and FSU's MSIT or MS Computer Science match that goal better.
Do not shortlistAnyone funding the degree with a large loan to be repaid within a few yearsAbout INR 106 lakh against a USD 68,270 librarian median leaves a long repayment.
Do not shortlistAnyone who needs an assistantship to afford the degreeThe iSchool publishes no award numbers, and its waiver covers only the in-state part of tuition.

The degree rewards people who enjoy organising information for others. Information Organization and Research in Information Studies are core for the library major, and cataloguing, metadata and collection development are the electives most library posts ask about.

It also suits someone weighing a PhD later. The MSI is one of only two iSchool master’s with a thesis route, 6 of the 36 credits over two terms with a three-member faculty committee, and a thesis gives you a written research record to show a doctoral admissions panel. You have to ask for the thesis track by email and name a supervising professor, so start that conversation in your first semester.

It suits a patient planner. You’ll attend two in-person classes each term, whichever the iSchool schedules, plus a live Zoom class one evening a week between 6pm and 10pm Eastern time, even while living in Tallahassee.

What courses make up the FSU MS Information?

The Information major fixes four core courses and one technology course and leaves 21 credits to any 5000-level LIS course. The Information Science and Technology major shares two of those core courses, adds two systems courses and needs 9 technology credits. Every course on the iSchool’s graduate list is 3 credits, so 36 credits means exactly 12 courses.

The note “Elective” applies to 30 components in this table.

  • Information major, LIS 5271, LIS 5411, LIS 5408 and LIS 5703 plus one technology course and 21 elective credits
  • IS&T major, LIS 5411, LIS 5408, LIS 5203 and LIS 5487 plus 9 technology credits and 15 elective credits
  • Earn a C- or better in every iSchool course and keep a 3.0 overall
  • Count no more than 12 credits from other departments, each at B or better
  • A thesis uses 6 of the 36 credits as LIS 5971 over two terms, with a three-member committee
  • Finish within seven years of your first graduate course

For an Indian student on the library major, three elective clusters make sense. Academic librarianship means Collection Development and Management, Introduction to Information Services and Cataloging and Classification. Digital and archival work means Digital Libraries, Fundamentals of Metadata Theory and Practice and Museum Informatics. Data-leaning work means Database Management Systems, Data Mining and Analytics and Data Organization.

The rotation limits what you can actually take. Research in Information Studies, a library-major core course, runs in Fall and Summer but not Spring. Cataloging and Classification runs only in Spring, and Data Mining and Analytics runs once in 2027-28, in Spring 2028. Map all four semesters against the rotation schedule before you accept, and keep a second choice for each elective.

An internship, LIS 5945, earns 1 to 6 elective credits at 45 hours of work per credit, and an F-1 student needs Curricular Practical Training approval from FSU’s international office first. Eleven programs of study, from General Librarianship to Web Design, help you pick electives but don’t appear on the diploma.

Should you shortlist the FSU MS Information?

Shortlist it if you want a US library, archive or metadata career and can accept a timetable the school sets, and only then. What keeps an F-1 student in status is FSU’s rule of 6 in-person credits in every 9, and the iSchool runs exactly two face-to-face classes a term, so both of them are yours every semester.

What you get is a US professional credential with no subject bar at the door. A BA, BCom or BSc graduate can apply on a 3.0 GPA and an English score, and the ALA accreditation on the Information major is the thing most US library employers ask for. What it costs you is choice. In a four-semester plan, eight of your twelve courses are whichever ones the iSchool puts in a classroom that term.

Three things are genuinely hard here. First, the fee doesn't match the pay. About INR 106 lakh buys a degree whose main US occupation, librarians, had a May 2025 median of USD 68,270, so repaying an education loan from a library salary is slow. Second, the campus route is thin, with only 74 of 286 MSI students full-time in Fall 2026, and the school doesn't say which classes will meet in person. And the technology major is close to empty, with 2 part-time students in Fall 2026 and no ALA accreditation, so a BTech graduate who wants IT work should look at the MSIT or MS Computer Science instead.

Key takeaways
  • FSU's MS Information costs about INR 106.41 lakh, or USD 111,153, over 22 months from Fall 2027, at USD 1,281.77 per credit hour for 36 credits.
  • Only the Information major is ALA-accredited, and the second major had just 2 students in Fall 2026.
  • There's no subject prerequisite, so any bachelor's with a 3.0 upper-division GPA and TOEFL 96, IELTS 6.5 or Duolingo 125 can apply.
  • F-1 students need 6 in-person credits of every 9, and the iSchool runs only two face-to-face classes each Fall and Spring.
  • A USD 672.40 market rate exists for fully online MSI courses, but FSU hasn't said it applies to F-1 students.
  • The degree sits under CIP 11.0401 on the DHS STEM list, which allows up to 36 months of OPT in total.

Frequently asked questions

What is the total cost of MS Information at FSU for Indian students?

Plan on about INR 106.41 lakh, or USD 111,153, for a Fall 2027 start. That covers 36 credits at USD 1,281.77 each, semester fees, books, 22 months of living at USD 2,545 a month, FSU's compulsory health insurance, the application fee, SEVIS and the visa fee. Flights aren't included.

Is FSU's MS Information the same as an MLIS?

In practice, yes. FSU calls its library degree a Master of Science in Information, and the Information major is accredited by the American Library Association, which most US library employers ask for. The second major, Information Science and Technology, isn't ALA-accredited, so choose the Information major for library jobs.

Can an F-1 student do FSU's MS Information on campus?

Yes, within limits. FSU needs 9 credits each Fall and Spring with at least 6 in person, and the iSchool runs two face-to-face classes each of those terms, so you take both plus one online class. Most in-person LIS courses count as electives, but ask advising which ones run face-to-face.

Is GRE required for MS Information at Florida State University?

No. The Fall 2027 MSI application asks for a resume, a departmental application, a statement of purpose, transcripts and English scores, with no GRE or GMAT. FSU has no university-wide test rule for master's either. The 2024-25 bulletin still calls the GRE preferred, but that entry is out of date.

Can I apply to FSU MS Information without a computer science background?

Yes. The MSI sets no subject prerequisite, unlike FSU's MS Information Technology, which asks for 12 IT credits or two years of IT work. Graduates with no IT background are strongly advised to take LIS 5485 Introduction to Information Technologies as their technology course, and it currently runs only in Spring.

What is the deadline for FSU MS Information Fall 2027?

The MSI page says 1 July, but that's too late for an Indian student to get an I-20 and a visa before August. FSU's Graduate School uses 15 January as its priority international deadline, so submit by 15 January 2027 with test scores and the credential evaluation already sent.

Is FSU MS Information a STEM degree for OPT?

Yes. FSU's international office lists both MSI majors under CIP 11.0401, Information Science/Studies, and that code is on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List. With the code on your I-20 you can apply for 12 months of OPT and then a 24-month STEM extension, if your employer qualifies.

What is the FSU iSchool market rate, and can Indian students get it?

It's a reduced USD 672.40 per credit hour for MSI students from outside the Academic Common Market, on fully online LIS courses only. FSU describes eligibility by US state of residence and never mentions F-1 students, so ask iSchool Student Services in writing. Assistantship holders can't have it.
