What is the FSU MS Finance, and what does it cost an Indian student?
FSU’s Master of Science in Finance is a 32-credit, three-semester course at the Herbert Wertheim College of Business, from late June to early May. It’s meant for finance graduates who’ve passed four named prerequisite courses. Using FSU’s tuition table and its own living estimate, the full programme costs about INR 74.53 lakh.
The first term is Summer Session B, with one required online course and one on campus. Fall and Spring cover investments, econometrics, financial modelling and derivatives, plus three courses in either corporate finance and investment management or real estate. This page is written for the Summer 2027 intake. FSU hasn’t published its Fall 2027 health insurance premiums or its 2027 summer course fee file yet, so those lines use 2026-27 figures.
How much does the FSU MS Finance cost in rupees, all in?
Plan for INR 74.53 lakh, or USD 77,854. The college quotes USD 40,897 for the programme, but that is tuition only, at the 2026-27 rate, with no living, insurance or visa costs. Twelve months of living adds USD 30,540 on top of that.
| Item | INR | Local currency | When it is due |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tuition, Summer 2027, 6 credits at USD 1,278.04 | INR 7.34 lakh | USD 7,668.24 | Before classes in late June 2027 |
| Tuition, Fall 2027 and Spring 2028, 26 credits at USD 1,281.77 | INR 31.90 lakh | USD 33,326.02 | Each semester, August and January |
| Online course fee, FIN 5506, 3 credits at USD 30 | INR 9,000 | USD 90 | With summer tuition |
| Facility fee for 3 terms, FSUCard fee for 2 | INR 7,000 | USD 70 | Each semester |
| Living, June 2027 to May 2028, 12 months at USD 2,545 | INR 29.24 lakh | USD 30,540 | Monthly from arrival |
| Books and supplies, 3 semesters at USD 690 | INR 1.98 lakh | USD 2,070 | Start of each semester |
| FSU health insurance, Summer Only plus annual plan | INR 3.37 lakh | USD 3,525 | From the first summer bill |
| Application, SEVIS and F-1 visa fees | INR 54,000 | USD 565 | Before you travel |
| Full programme, June 2027 to May 2028 | INR 74.53 lakh | USD 77,854 | Across the programme |
FSU's I-20 needs proof of USD 66,399 for the MSF on its 2026 table, well above the USD 49,944 it asks for an 18-credit master's, because 32 credits and a summer fall inside twelve months. That money stays yours. The USD 250 visa integrity fee is in US law but no fee schedule we could read on 24 September 2026 shows it being collected, so it isn't in the total. Converted at INR 95.7310 per USD, the FBIL reference rate for 23 September 2026 on the RBI website. Flights and the visa integrity fee are excluded.
The summer term falls inside FSU’s 2026-27 rate table, so its 6 credits are billed at USD 1,278.04. The 26 credits in Fall 2027 and Spring 2028 use USD 1,281.77, the rate FSU’s trustees approved on 28 August 2026. That’s where the USD 97 gap over the college’s figure comes from, along with the flat fees it leaves out.
FIN 5506 is the one online course, and FSU bills online sections separately. The Summer 2026 cost file lists the Session B section at USD 30 per credit hour. The Summer 2027 file isn’t out yet, so treat USD 90 as the last published figure.
Living uses FSU’s own off-campus graduate budget of USD 22,906 for nine months, which works out to USD 2,545 a month, applied to every month from a June arrival to a May finish. Health insurance is automatic for F-1 students with no waiver, and a June start means FSU’s USD 728 Summer Only premium comes before the USD 2,797 annual plan.
The college says it offers a limited number of assistantships, with about 10 hours of work a week, a stipend and a tuition waiver. Its handbook calls that an in-state tuition waiver, which would leave most of an out-of-state bill in place. Nothing in the total assumes you get one.
Budget for movement too. FSU’s international office tells applicants to allow for possible rises of 15% a year in tuition and fees, and the rupee has its own swings. A 5% fall in the rupee against the dollar would add about INR 3.7 lakh to this total before any fee changes.
Summer tuition is due in June, only weeks after the visa interview, so the first large payment comes early. If a loan is funding the course, check that the lender will disburse before a summer term, since many Indian education loans are set up around an August start.
Can an Indian student meet the FSU MS Finance entry rules?
Yes, if the degree carries the four finance prerequisites, a 3.0 upper-division GPA and IELTS 7. The four courses decide most files, because FSU wants them complete before you enrol and treats a finance degree as the normal route. A non-finance degree is considered only with proven competence in those subjects.
| Requirement | Published rule | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor's degree (India) | Comparable to a US bachelor's, per a NACES evaluation | Get the evaluation before paying the fee |
| Upper-division GPA (India) | 3.0 on 4.0, from your 60th credit onwards | Ask the evaluator for this GPA |
| Financial Accounting | ACG 2021 or equivalent, finished before enrolment | Match it to a marksheet course |
| Business Finance | FIN 3403 or equivalent, minimum grade B- | Check that one course grade |
| Investments | FIN 4504 or equivalent, finished before enrolment | Match it to a marksheet course |
| Corporate Finance | FIN 4424 or equivalent, finished before enrolment | Match it to a marksheet course |
| Degree subject | Finance first; related degrees need proven prerequisite skill | Show the evidence in your statement |
| Work experience | No minimum; an internship strongly encouraged | List internships with dates |
| GMAT or GRE | Optional; send only at the 50th percentile or above | Skip it unless your score clears that |
| English test (India) | IELTS 7, PTE 66 or TOEFL iBT 5.0, within two years | Aim for IELTS 7, not 6.5 |
| Documents | Statement, resume, three letters, USD 30 | Pick recommenders who taught you finance |
| I-20 funds (India) | USD 66,399 for the MSF on FSU's 2026 table | Get bank letters dated within six months |
FSU’s Graduate School sets the floor, a comparable degree and a 3.0 upper-division GPA. The MSF adds the four named courses and the college’s higher English scores on top. Where the two differ, this page uses the stricter programme rule.
The GMAT or GRE is optional, and any score you send becomes part of the file. The college also says scholarships and assistantships are awarded partly on undergraduate GPA and test scores. A good score can help with money even when it isn’t needed for admission.
FSU doesn’t publish a conversion from Indian percentages or CGPA to its 4.0 scale. The NACES evaluator does that conversion course by course, so two applicants with the same aggregate can land on different GPAs. Treat the evaluator’s figure as the one the department sees, and apply only once you know it clears 3.0.
Your three letters should come from people who can speak about your finance work. The programme asks for letters that address your ability to complete the MSF specifically, so a general character reference from a college principal adds little.
Six things that decide an Indian finance applicant's file
Map the four prerequisites to named courses before you apply
A BCom or BBA usually covers accounting and financial management. Investments and corporate finance are the two that go missing. FSU is plain about the timing.“All applicants must complete the following four business foundation courses prior to enrollment in the MSF program”FSU Herbert Wertheim College of Business
Write the Indian course title and code beside each FSU code in your statement. If one is missing, a course finished after admission but before late June still counts by that wording. Confirm it with the graduate programmes office first.A three-year BCom needs the evaluation before the fee
FSU publishes no rule on three-year Indian degrees. It asks for a degree comparable to a US bachelor’s and lets a NACES evaluation decide. Most Indian finance applicants hold a three-year BCom, so this is the rule that matters most here. Get the course-by-course evaluation, or at least the evaluator’s preliminary view, before you pay USD 30 to apply. A four-year degree such as a BTech or a four-year BBA, or a BCom followed by an MCom or MBA, is the safer case.
Declare the 3.0 on upper-division years, not your overall CGPA
FSU counts the GPA from the term in which you attempted your 60th credit to the end of the degree. That usually means your last two years. A weak first year doesn’t hurt you, and a weak final year hurts more than your aggregate suggests. FSU’s preferred evaluator, The Evaluation Company (formerly SpanTran), calculates this figure, and it’s the number the department reads.
On F-1, the summer classroom course is compulsory
Every MSF student takes FIN 5506 online in the first summer. A new F-1 student starting in Summer B must carry 6 credits with at least 3 in person.“Beginning Summer B: 6 credits with at least 3 credits of in-person (not online or virtual) classes out of the 6-credit minimum enrollment.”FSU Center for Global Engagement
So your second summer course has to be ISM 5644 or QMB 5616 on campus. The programme lets others swap it for an internship, and the bulletin mentions a remote summer. Neither works for you, because FSU now refuses CPT for training that isn’t required of every student, and never in the first academic year.Aim for 1 December, not 15 January or 1 March
The programme page lists 15 January as the priority date and 1 March as final, and adds that the final date may be earlier for international applicants. Wertheim’s international page asks for completed international files before 1 December for summer entry. The 15 January date still matters, because assistantship offers are judged on files complete by then.
Book IELTS 7, and ask before you rely on Duolingo
FSU’s university minimum is IELTS 6.5. The College of Business sets 7, PTE 66 and TOEFL iBT 5.0 on the new scale. The MSF page accepts Duolingo 125, but Wertheim’s international page leaves Duolingo off its list. An English-medium Indian degree doesn’t exempt you. Email the graduate programmes office before booking Duolingo.
How do you apply to the FSU MS Finance for Summer 2027?
There are four hand-overs and two sit outside FSU. The evaluator must send your course-by-course report and the test body your score. Then FSU admits you, and CGE issues the I-20. Work backwards from 1 December 2026, the date Wertheim sets for international files.
You apply through FSU's graduate admissions portal. The Wertheim graduate programmes office reviews the file once the NACES evaluation lands, and after formal admission you complete the I-20 request in Nole Start, which CGE issues within about three business days.
| Start by | Task | Takes | Why this date |
|---|---|---|---|
| 14 Oct 2026 | Order sealed transcripts from your university | 21 days | Indian registrars often take two to three weeks. |
| 26 Oct 2026 | Sit IELTS or PTE and send the score | 30 days | Leaves room for one retake if you miss 7. |
| 28 Oct 2026 | Map the four prerequisite courses | 7 days | Decides whether to apply this cycle at all. |
| 04 Nov 2026 | NACES course-by-course evaluation | 21 days | FSU won't review the file until the report arrives. |
| 04 Nov 2026 | Three recommendation letters | 21 days | Recommenders submit inside the online application. |
| 25 Nov 2026 | Statement, resume and submission | 5 days | Pay the USD 30 fee and check every upload. |
The allowances are Nbyula planning estimates, not processing times published by Florida State University.
The prerequisite audit comes first because it’s the rule most likely to end the application. If one of the four courses is missing, decide now whether you can finish it before late June 2027 or should aim for Summer 2028.
After admission you still need the I-20, the SEVIS fee, a visa interview and a flight, all before Summer Session B begins in late June. A file finished on 1 March leaves under four months for all of that, which is tight for interview slots in India.
The I-20 needs bank letters dated within six months showing USD 66,399, on FSU’s 2026 table. If you use family funds for the I-20, FSU expects you to stay on family funds for the period you proved, so plan the sponsor’s documents once and keep them current.
The programme says complete files by 15 January are nominated for university fellowships and considered for its own assistantships, and the handbook says awards are normally made in the spring before the course starts. Applying on 1 March may still get you a place, but probably not money.
What jobs and work rights follow the FSU MS Finance?
The only programme-level outcome FSU publishes is weak. Its business college reports that 42.4% of MSF graduates from Summer 2021 to Spring 2022 had a job offer within six months. That’s self-reported and four classes old, but no newer MSF figure, salary or employer list is published.
| Measure | Figure | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| MSF job offers, six months | 42.4% | Graduates of Summer 2021 to Spring 2022, self-reported. |
| Analyst median pay, US | USD 102,740 | BLS, May 2025, all US analysts. |
| Analyst job growth | 7% | BLS, 2025 to 2035. |
| Work permission after | 12 + 24 months | OPT plus STEM OPT, CIP 27.0305. |
| H-1B master's cap | 20,000 extra | Lottery weighted by wage level. |
The FSU figures are the college's own and cover one graduating year. The BLS figures describe the occupation across the US, not this programme.
FSU codes the MSF under CIP 27.0305, Financial Mathematics, which is on the DHS STEM list. The general finance code isn’t, so this is what earns the 24-month STEM extension. Your I-20 will show the CIP field rather than the word finance, and a STEM OPT job has to relate to it.
The BLS says financial analysts typically need a bachelor’s degree, and it puts the May 2025 median at USD 102,740. A US master’s isn’t a legal requirement for these jobs. It buys you US work permission and a recruiting season, which is why the 42.4% figure deserves more weight than any salary average.
The college names the careers it trains for, from investment banking and asset management to corporate finance, private equity and fintech. Those are aims. FSU publishes no list of employers that hired MSF graduates, and we found none elsewhere from an independent source.
The H-1B USD 100,000 payment doesn’t apply when an employer changes your status inside the US and it’s granted. It’s also blocked by a June 2026 court order, though DHS says it still plans to collect if that order is lifted. A separate USD 103,265 fee proposed in August 2026 would cover all cap petitions if it’s finalised as written.
The timing works like this. You finish in early May 2028 and can file for OPT up to 90 days before that. The first H-1B lottery you could enter is the one held in March 2029, while you’re still on OPT, and STEM OPT gives you two more lottery seasons if the first one misses.
How is FSU ranked for a master's in finance?
TFE Times ranks FSU’s MSF 39th among US master’s in finance programmes for 2026. QS, THE and US News rank the whole university, not this course. Ranking is context here. It doesn’t decide admission, and it doesn’t measure the MSF’s placement.
Who should apply to the FSU MS Finance, and who shouldn't?
It fits a four-year finance or commerce graduate who has all four prerequisites, wants US finance work, and can pay without an assistantship. It doesn't fit someone changing careers into finance from scratch, or anyone whose plan depends on a paid first-summer internship.
| Verdict | Your background | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Strong fit | Four-year finance or commerce degree, all four prerequisites passed | The applicant FSU built the course for. |
| Needs evidence | BTech, maths, statistics or economics graduate with finance electives | Considered only with proven prerequisite competence. |
| Needs evidence | Three-year BCom graduate, no master's | No published rule; the evaluation decides. |
| Do not shortlist | Graduate with no finance coursework, hoping to learn finance here | The four courses come before enrolment. |
| Do not shortlist | Student counting on a paid internship in the first summer | FSU won't approve CPT for it. |
| Do not shortlist | Family that can only fund it with an assistantship | Awards are limited and may waive in-state tuition only. |
The lock-step design suits someone who wants the degree done in eleven months and is ready to start recruiting from the first fall. It’s a poor fit if you’d want an extra semester for an internship, since the schedule has no gap for one.
If you’re choosing between this and FSU’s MS Business Analytics, look at your transcript. The MSF needs finance courses you’ve already passed. Business Analytics asks for maths, statistics and programming instead, and the job outcomes differ in the same college table.
A student with a strong maths degree and little finance coursework might look at FSU’s MS Mathematics with the Financial Mathematics major instead. It’s a quant route that admits in fall only, so it runs on a different calendar from this one.
What will you study in the FSU MS Finance, term by term?
The course has 32 credit hours over three terms, and FSU lists no thesis or comprehensive exam. Everyone takes six core finance and economics courses and two 1-credit career courses, then picks one summer course and a three-course track in corporate finance or real estate.
| Code | Component | Credit hours | Where it sits |
|---|---|---|---|
| FIN 5506 | Alternative Investments & Portfolio Strategy | 3 | Summer, online, everyone |
| ISM 5644 | Programming for Analytics | 3 | Summer, pick one of three |
| QMB 5616 | Probabilistic Optimization for Analytics | 3 | Summer, pick one of three |
| GEB 5944 | Finance Internship | 3 | Summer option, not for new F-1 students |
| FIN 5515 | Investment Management and Analysis | 3 | Fall, core |
| FIN 5840 | Applied Econometrics in Finance | 3 | Fall, core |
| FIN 5785 | Financial Modeling for Investment Banking & Corporate Finance | 3 | Fall, core |
| GEB 5087 | Professional Development Foundation | 1 | Fall, core |
| FIN 5537 | Financial Derivatives and Risk Management | 3 | Spring, core |
| MAN 5716 | Business Conditions Analysis | 3 | Spring, core |
| GEB 5089 | Professional Development Transition | 1 | Spring, core |
| FIN 5526 | Portfolio Management & Wealth Planning | 3 | Corporate track, Fall option |
| FIN 5335 | Fintech Innovations & Crypto | 3 | Corporate track, Fall or Spring |
| FIN 5545 | Fixed Income Securities | 3 | Corporate track, Spring option |
| FIN 5517 | Equity Valuation | 3 | Corporate track, Spring option |
| REE 5305 | Real Estate Investments | 3 | Real estate track, Fall |
| REE 5205 | Real Estate Finance | 3 | Real estate track, Spring |
| REE 5209 | Advanced Real Estate Finance and Investment | 3 | Real estate track, Spring |
| Credits each student completes | 32 |
- Core is 20 credits, six 3-credit courses plus two 1-credit career courses
- One summer course of 3 credits, and a 9-credit specialisation
- Every course needs C- or better, and you graduate only with a 3.0 programme GPA
The published lists don’t fully agree. The 2026-27 handbook names QMB 5616 Statistical Methods for Business Analytics, codes the fintech course FIT 5335, and fixes the corporate-track spring courses, while the programme page offers a choice of two. This table follows the programme page. Check the schedule you’re given at orientation.
Because the course is lock-step, one weak summer matters. FSU puts you on probation below a 3.0 programme GPA and dismisses you if it isn’t back to 3.0 by the end of the next term, which here is the fall.
Should an Indian finance graduate shortlist FSU's MS Finance?
Shortlist it if your transcript already shows financial accounting, business finance, investments and corporate finance, and only then. FSU wants all four done before enrolment, with at least a B- in business finance. A strong CGPA without those courses doesn’t get you in.
What you get is speed. Eleven months of classes, a STEM classification that adds 24 months of work permission after the first 12, and a curriculum the college ties to the CFA and CAIA syllabi. What you give up is room to move. The course is lock-step, so you can't slow down, swap semesters or start in August.
Two things are genuinely hard here. The college's own placement table shows only 42.4% of 2021-22 MSF graduates had a job offer six months out, against 93.3% for FSU's MBA in the same table. That's old data, but it's the only programme figure FSU publishes, and it doesn't point to an easy job market.
And the summer that shortens the course also squeezes you. Wertheim wants international files before 1 December, you land in June, and the internship option other students get in that first summer isn't open to you on an F-1 visa.
- FSU's MS Finance is 32 credit hours over three terms, from late June 2027 to early May 2028, with one intake a year.
- The full programme costs about INR 74.53 lakh (USD 77,854), including USD 41,084 in tuition and twelve months of living at USD 2,545 a month.
- Four prerequisite courses must be finished before enrolment, including business finance with at least a B-.
- Wertheim wants international files before 1 December 2026, six weeks ahead of the 15 January priority date on the programme page.
- The college's own table shows 42.4% of 2021-22 MSF graduates had a job offer within six months.
- The MSF is coded CIP 27.0305, which qualifies it for 24 months of STEM OPT after the first 12.
Frequently asked questions
What is the total cost of the FSU MS Finance for Indian students?
About INR 74.53 lakh, or USD 77,854, for the full programme from June 2027 to May 2028. That covers USD 41,084 tuition for 32 credits, flat fees, twelve months of living at FSU's own estimate, books, compulsory health insurance, and the application, SEVIS and visa fees. Flights aren't included.
Is GRE or GMAT required for MS Finance at FSU?
No. FSU lists the GMAT and GRE as optional for the MS Finance. If you send a score it becomes part of the file, and the college recommends sending one only at or above the 50th percentile. Scholarships and assistantships partly consider test scores, so a strong score can still help with funding.
When is the FSU MS Finance application deadline for international students?
Wertheim asks international applicants to submit complete files before 1 December for summer entry. The programme page also lists 15 January as the priority and assistantship date and 1 March as final, noting the final date may be earlier for international applicants. For Summer 2027, plan around 1 December 2026.
Can I apply to FSU MS Finance with a BCom degree?
Possibly. FSU needs four courses done before enrolment, covering financial accounting, business finance with a B- or better, investments and corporate finance. It also needs a degree comparable to a US bachelor's, decided by a NACES evaluation. FSU publishes no rule on three-year degrees, so get that evaluation before applying.
Does FSU MS Finance start in fall?
No. The MS Finance admits once a year, in summer. Classes start in Summer Session B in late June and the programme ends in early May of the next year. If you miss the summer start, the next chance is the following June, because FSU admission is tied to the term you applied for.
Is the FSU MS Finance STEM designated for OPT?
Yes. FSU codes it under CIP 27.0305, Financial Mathematics, which is on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List dated 22 July 2024. That lets eligible graduates add a 24-month STEM extension to the standard 12 months of OPT, provided the job relates to that field.
What IELTS score does FSU MS Finance need?
The College of Business asks for Academic IELTS 7, higher than FSU's university minimum of 6.5. It also accepts PTE 66 and TOEFL iBT 5.0 on the new scale for tests from 21 January 2026. Scores must be under two years old. An English-medium Indian degree doesn't exempt you from the test.
What is the placement rate for FSU MS Finance?
The college's own table reports that 42.4% of MSF graduates from Summer 2021 to Spring 2022 had a job offer within six months. It's self-reported and dated, and FSU publishes no newer MSF figure, no salary data and no employer list for the programme. The FSU MBA showed 93.3% in the same table.
