What is the FSU MS in Biostatistics?
FSU’s Master of Science in Biostatistics is a 36 credit hour, four-term degree for people who want to design and analyse clinical trials and epidemiological studies. Tuition is USD 1,281.77 a credit hour for Fall 2027 entry, per FSU’s fee notice. With 22 months of living, insurance and visa fees, the whole degree costs about INR 106.41 lakh.
Seven of the courses are fixed, and three of those are health-specific, epidemiology, clinical trials and a choice of survival analysis, longitudinal analysis or SAS. The other 12 credit hours are electives, and a thesis can replace two of them. This page is written for Fall 2027 entry. FSU hasn’t yet published its Fall 2027 I-20 funding table or 2027-28 insurance premiums, so those two lines use the 2026 figures.
How much does the FSU MS in Biostatistics cost an Indian student?
Plan on INR 106.41 lakh (USD 111,152.72) for the full four terms. The myth to drop is the one-year tuition figure listing sites quote, because tuition alone for 36 credit hours is USD 46,143.72 at FSU’s Fall 2027 per-credit rate, and living for 22 months costs more than that.
| Item | INR | Local currency | When it is due |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tuition and fees, 36 credit hours | INR 44.27 lakh | USD 46,243.72 | Each term, Fall 2027 to Spring 2029 |
| Living, 22 months | INR 53.60 lakh | USD 55,990 | Monthly from August 2027 |
| Books and supplies, 4 terms | INR 2.64 lakh | USD 2,760 | Start of each term |
| FSU health insurance, 2 years | INR 5.36 lakh | USD 5,594 | Billed each year from August |
| Application, SEVIS and visa fees | INR 54,000 | USD 565 | Before you fly |
| Total, four terms | INR 106.41 lakh | USD 111,152.72 | August 2027 to May 2029 |
FSU's I-20 needs proof of USD 49,944 for year one on its 2026 table, about INR 47.81 lakh, and that money stays yours. A USD 250 visa integrity fee is in US law, but its collection wasn't confirmed on 24 September 2026, so it isn't in the total. Converted at INR 95.7310 to the US dollar, the FBIL reference rate for 23 September 2026 shown by the RBI. Flights and a housing deposit are excluded.
The tuition row is 36 x USD 1,281.77, which is USD 46,143.72, plus the USD 20 facility fee and USD 5 FSUCard fee in each of four terms. The Board of Trustees approved the Fall 2027 fee rise on 28 August 2026. FSU’s international office tells students to allow for potential rises of 15% a year, so the second year could cost more.
Living uses FSU’s 2026-27 off-campus graduate budget of USD 22,906 for nine months, which works out to USD 2,545 a month. We charge it for 22 months, August 2027 to May 2029, including the summer between years, when most students stay in Tallahassee. Books are USD 690 a term from the same budget.
Insurance isn’t optional. From 2026-27 every F-1 student is automatically enrolled in the FSU plan and can’t waive it with an Indian or cheaper US policy. At USD 2,797 a year, two policy years cover the 22 months.
A department assistantship changes this sum a lot, because FSU reserves tuition waivers for graduate assistants and fellows. Waivers cover tuition only, so fees and insurance stay yours. The Graduate School calls assistantship funds very limited, so budget as if you’ll pay the full amount.
Can an Indian graduate get into the FSU MS in Biostatistics?
Yes, with a 3.0 upper-division GPA on a NACES course-by-course evaluation and the maths the department names. It expects Calculus 1 to 3, linear algebra, a probability course and an applied statistics course. The GRE is optional, and the English score you need depends on whether you want funding.
| Requirement | Published rule | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor's degree (India) | A degree comparable to a US bachelor's, with a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale in upper-division coursework | Order a NACES course-by-course evaluation that calculates the upper-division GPA |
| Three-year degree (India) | No FSU or department rule either way; the evaluation decides comparability | Get the evaluation before paying the USD 30 application fee |
| Mathematics | Calculus 1 to 3 (a three- or four-term sequence) and a linear algebra course | List the papers on your marksheet that match each one |
| Probability and statistics | One applied statistics course and one probability course are expected | Name both courses in your statement of purpose |
| Credential evaluation (India) | A NACES course-by-course evaluation is needed before FSU reviews the file | Start it as soon as your final marksheets are out |
| GRE | Optional; scores up to 5 years old are considered | Send it only if it strengthens a weak maths record |
| English, self-funded (India) | IELTS 6.5, PTE 55, or TOEFL iBT 80 (4.0 on the new scale) | Book the test that fits your timeline |
| English, for funding (India) | TOEFL 90 overall with 23 in speaking; no waiver for international applicants | Take TOEFL if you want an assistantship |
| Documents | Three recommendation letters, a 1 to 3 page statement of purpose, CV and the assistantship form | Brief your referees on the maths they can vouch for |
| Proof of funds (India) | USD 49,944 for year one on FSU's 2026 I-20 table, dated within six months | Line up bank letters on letterhead, signed by a manager |
FSU counts upper-division GPA from the term in which you attempted your 60th credit hour to the end of the degree, which in Indian terms is roughly the last two years. There’s no published conversion from Indian percentage or CGPA. The evaluator does that, which is why FSU recommends The Evaluation Company, formerly SpanTran, since it calculates the upper-division figure.
Probability and statistics are where Indian transcripts most often fall short. A BSc Mathematics may have probability but no applied statistics paper, and a BTech may have one combined probability and statistics paper. Either can work if the statement of purpose names the paper, its marks and the topics it covered, such as random variables, distributions and hypothesis testing.
International students can’t be admitted provisionally, so a missing maths course isn’t made up after arrival. Admission is also term specific, so if your visa comes late you reapply rather than defer.
Five rules that reject Indian files
Apply by 15 January, because 1 July is the deadline for people already in the US
The department lists a general Fall deadline of 1 July, and that’s the date aggregators repeat. Read the line above it.“Priority deadline for international students: Jan. 15. (If students will require a new visa for admission, they must apply by this deadline.)”FSU Department of Statistics, admissions
An Indian applicant needs an F-1 visa, so 15 January 2027 is your real Fall 2027 deadline. If you want to be considered for university fellowships and awards too, the priority date is 1 December 2026.An IELTS score keeps you out of the assistantship pool
IELTS 6.5 gets you admitted as a self-funded student. It doesn’t get you considered for money.“If you are an international student and wish to be considered for an assistantship, you cannot waive your TOEFL requirement, and must submit a TOEFL score.”FSU Department of Statistics, admissions
The bar is TOEFL 90 overall and 23 in speaking, and those are old-scale numbers. TOEFL moved to a 1 to 6 scale for tests from 21 January 2026, and the department hasn’t published an equivalent, so ask it before you book. Spring entry rules out an assistantship completely.Show probability and applied statistics on the transcript, whatever the bulletin says
The Graduate Bulletin says prior work in statistics isn’t required. The department’s own page lists Calculus 1 to 3, linear algebra, an applied statistics course and a probability course as what it expects. Go by the department, since it reads the file. An Indian BTech usually covers calculus under Engineering Mathematics I to III, so name those papers in your statement. If probability isn’t a separate paper, point to the unit inside a mathematics paper that covered it.
Get the evaluation before paying the fee if you hold a three-year degree
No FSU page says whether a three-year BSc counts as comparable to a US bachelor’s, and the department doesn’t say either. The NACES evaluation decides, and FSU won’t review a file without one. A four-year BTech, BE or BSc (Hons) is the safe case. With a three-year BSc, order the evaluation first, check that it reports a bachelor’s equivalent and an upper-division GPA of 3.0 or more, then pay the USD 30 fee.
Don't book Duolingo until the department confirms the score
The department page accepts Duolingo 120. FSU’s 2026-27 General Bulletin asks for 125. The Graduate School’s international page leaves Duolingo off its list entirely. Three pages give three answers. IELTS 6.5 or PTE 55 appear on every list, so they’re the safer choice if you’re self-funding.
How do you apply to FSU's MS in Biostatistics for Fall 2027?
There are three hand-overs outside FSU, the credential evaluator, the test agency and your referees, before the file reaches the department. Work backwards from the 15 January 2027 international deadline. The evaluation is the slow part, and FSU won’t open your file until it arrives.
You apply once, through the Graduate School's online application, and the Department of Statistics decides. The evaluator sends your Indian records, ETS or IELTS sends your scores, and your referees upload their letters. After an offer, FSU's Center for Global Engagement issues the I-20 once your funds are proved, and then you pay SEVIS and book the visa interview.
| Start by | Task | Takes | Why this date |
|---|---|---|---|
| 13 Nov 2026 | Collect marksheets and degree certificate | 21 days | Your university must send or certify them; notarised copies aren't accepted. |
| 24 Nov 2026 | Sit TOEFL or IELTS and send scores | 45 days | Scores must come from the test agency; TOEFL only if you want funding. |
| 04 Dec 2026 | NACES course-by-course evaluation | 35 days | FSU can't review the file until the evaluation arrives. |
| 09 Dec 2026 | Brief three referees | 30 days | Ask them to mention the maths courses they taught you. |
| 18 Dec 2026 | Write the statement and CV | 21 days | One to three pages naming your calculus, probability and statistics courses. |
| 08 Jan 2027 | Submit and pay USD 30 | 7 days | Leave a week to fix upload problems before 15 January. |
The allowances are Nbyula planning estimates, not processing times published by Florida State University.
Pick the programme carefully in the application. The Graduate School’s list of master’s programmes shows Statistics but has no separate Biostatistics entry, and the degree’s own description sits on the Department of Statistics site and in the Graduate Bulletin. If you can’t find Biostatistics as a choice, email the department before you submit rather than applying to MS Statistics by mistake.
The online application includes an assistantship form, and the department wants it even if you’re paying yourself. Fill it in. For fellowship and award consideration the department’s priority date is 1 December 2026, and 1 February 2027 is its final date for assistantships.
Under the July 2026 DHS rule, your I-20 end date matters more than before, because a delay in finishing is generally not accepted as a reason to extend, and the grace period after the programme is 30 days.
What jobs and salaries follow an FSU MS in Biostatistics?
FSU publishes no placement rate, salary or employer list for this degree. The department says it prepares you for research and health care work in private, academic and public settings. US labour data is the honest benchmark, and it puts statisticians’ median pay at USD 105,650.
| Measure | Figure | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| FSU placement rate for this degree | Not published | No rate, salary or employer list on the department's graduate, master's, admissions, handbook or resources pages, checked 24 September 2026 |
| Master's degrees awarded | 7 in 2024-25 | FSU Fact Book 2025-26, CIP 26.1102; the class is small |
| Statisticians, US median wage | USD 105,650 | BLS, May 2025; lowest 10% under USD 64,000, highest 10% over USD 174,050 |
| In life sciences research | USD 130,590 | BLS median for statisticians in physical, engineering and life sciences R&D, May 2025 |
| In healthcare | USD 100,900 | BLS median for statisticians in healthcare and social assistance, May 2025 |
| Statistician jobs, growth | 11% | BLS projection for 2025 to 2035 |
| Work after the degree | 12 + 24 months | OPT plus STEM OPT, because CIP 26.1102 is on the DHS STEM list |
| H-1B master's quota | 20,000 a year | Extra cap places for US master's graduates, still decided by a wage-weighted lottery |
The wages are US national figures for all statisticians, not for FSU graduates, and not starting pay.
Seven master’s degrees a year is a small class, and it means two things for you. You’ll know your professors, and there’s no large alumni cohort to lean on for referrals. FSU doesn’t publish a placement rate for this degree, and the department’s pages we checked carry no salary figures or employer list either.
BLS says statisticians known as biostatisticians work in pharmaceutical companies, public health agencies or hospitals, and that the usual entry qualification is a master’s degree. Those are the roles this degree’s clinical trials and epidemiology courses point at. FSU itself names no employers for this degree.
The degree is listed under CIP 26.1102 on FSU’s STEM-eligible majors list, and that code is on the DHS STEM list dated 22 July 2024. That makes a graduate eligible for 12 months of OPT and a 24-month STEM extension. The code on your I-20 is what counts, so check it when the I-20 arrives.
For an H-1B, a US master’s gets you into the extra 20,000-place pool, but selection since 2026 is weighted by the wage level offered, so a higher-paid offer gets more entries. The USD 100,000 payment in Proclamation 10973 doesn’t apply to a change of status granted inside the US, and a June 2026 court order has stopped its collection for now. A separate proposed fee of USD 103,265 would reach in-US petitions if it’s finalised.
How is FSU ranked for biostatistics?
US News places FSU 52nd, tied, in its biostatistics graduate list, which is the subject table closest to this degree. Rankings help you place a shortlist in context. They aren’t an admission rule, and none of them measures this master’s alone.
| Publisher | Position | Table and year |
|---|---|---|
| US News | #52 (tie) | Best Graduate Schools, Biostatistics, listed April 2026 |
| QS | #549 | World University Rankings 2026, overall |
| Times Higher Education | 301 to 350 | World University Rankings 2026, overall |
Who should apply to FSU's MS Biostatistics, and who shouldn't?
Apply if your degree was maths-heavy and you want clinical or public health data work, or a biostatistics PhD. Don’t apply if your background is life sciences without calculus, or if you need a cheap one-year course. The table below sorts six common Indian profiles.
| Verdict | Your background | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Strong fit | BSc Statistics or Mathematics with probability and linear algebra | You already meet every course the department expects, and the theory courses in year one build straight on it. |
| Strong fit | Planning a PhD in biostatistics | The department calls this degree one of the two best routes into its PhD, and master's students who want the PhD sit its comprehensive exam in their second year. |
| Needs evidence | BTech or BE with engineering maths and one statistics paper | Usually eligible, but show probability clearly on the transcript or in the statement, since it's expected. |
| Needs evidence | You need an assistantship to afford it | Only a TOEFL score of 90 with 23 in speaking, and fall entry, puts you in the pool. Funds are very limited. |
| Do not shortlist | BPharm, BSc Biotechnology or MBBS without calculus and linear algebra | You're missing the maths the department expects, and distribution theory starts in the first term. Look at FSU's MPH instead. |
| Do not shortlist | You want a one-year, lower-cost master's | This is four terms and about INR 106 lakh. FSU's statistical data science major takes three semesters and 32 credits. |
Funding is the other split. A self-funded student with IELTS 6.5 can be admitted, while a student who needs an assistantship has to take TOEFL, reach 90 with 23 in speaking and start in fall. If your family can’t cover INR 106 lakh without an assistantship, treat that as a condition of applying, not a hope.
The line between green and red here is maths, not subject. A pharmacy graduate who took calculus and a probability paper can do well, and a statistics graduate who never took linear algebra can’t skip it. Check your marksheet against the four courses before anything else.
What will you study in FSU's MS Biostatistics?
Seven fixed courses, one course from a choice of three, and electives, 36 credit hours in all. Year one is almost all statistical theory and regression, which is why the entry check leans on calculus and probability. The health courses, epidemiology and clinical trials, come in the second and third terms.
| Course | Component | Credit hours | Where it sits |
|---|---|---|---|
| STA 5207 | Applied Regression Methods | 3 | Year 1, Fall |
| STA 5326 | Distribution Theory and Inference | 3 | Year 1, Fall |
| STA 5334 | Limit Theory of Statistics | 3 | Year 1, Fall |
| STA 5208 | Linear Statistical Models | 3 | Year 1, Spring |
| STA 5327 | Statistical Inference | 3 | Year 1, Spring |
| STA 5198 | Epidemiology for Statisticians | 3 | Year 1, Spring |
| STA 5244 | Fundamentals of Clinical Trials | 3 | Year 2, Fall |
| STA 5066, 5179 or 5197 | One of SAS data management, Applied Survival Analysis or Longitudinal Analysis | 3 | Year 2, in an elective slot |
| Electives, chosen with your major professor | 12 | Year 2, Fall and Spring | |
| Total | 36 |
- Every required course is taken for a letter grade, and no more than six credit hours may be graded S/U
- You need a cumulative GPA of 3.0 to graduate
- The thesis option replaces two electives with thesis hours and ends in an oral defence
- Your programme of study must be filed by the end of your first semester
The typical programme on the department page lists the spring epidemiology course as STA51998, which is a typo for STA 5198. The handbook has it right. One course from outside the department can count as an elective with the graduate director’s approval.
If you’ve already passed a required course, you don’t repeat it, but you take a more advanced one in its place. A waiver never reduces the 36 credit hours. Survival analysis, longitudinal analysis, epidemiology and clinical trials also count towards the department’s SAS certificate, so you can earn both together.
Should you shortlist FSU's MS Biostatistics?
Shortlist it if your transcript already shows calculus, linear algebra, probability and a statistics course, and you’re aiming at clinical research or a biostatistics PhD. Six of the seven required courses are statistical theory or regression, so the department expects that maths before you arrive.
What you get is a small, theory-heavy degree. FSU awarded just seven biostatistics master's degrees in 2024-25, and the department says this degree and its mathematical statistics track are the best preparation for its PhD. What it costs you is time and money. It runs four terms, not the three that FSU's statistical data science major takes, and self-funding it means about INR 106 lakh.
Two things are genuinely hard here. Department funding goes through teaching assistantships, and to be considered an international applicant must send a TOEFL score of at least 90 with 23 in speaking, apply for fall, and accept that support stops after year two unless the PhD admits you. And a life-sciences or pharmacy graduate without calculus and linear algebra will struggle to get in and struggle more in distribution theory and inference, which are first-term courses.
So if you're a BPharm or BSc Biotechnology graduate who wants health data work without heavy maths, this isn't the right course for you, and a public health degree is the better fit.

Frequently asked questions
What is the total cost of MS Biostatistics at FSU for Indian students?
About INR 106.41 lakh, or USD 111,152.72, for Fall 2027 entry. That covers 36 credit hours at USD 1,281.77 each plus term fees, 22 months of living at FSU's USD 2,545 monthly estimate, books, two years of compulsory FSU insurance, and the application, SEVIS and visa fees. Flights are extra.
Is GRE required for MS Biostatistics at Florida State University?
No. The Department of Statistics says the GRE is optional for its graduate programmes, and FSU has no university-wide GRE requirement for master's degrees. The department will consider scores up to five years old. Send one only if it strengthens a weak maths record, since calculus and probability decide most files.
What is the last date to apply for Fall 2027?
15 January 2027 for anyone who needs a new US visa, which includes Indian applicants. The department's 1 July date is for applicants who don't need a visa. For fellowship and award consideration apply by 1 December 2026, and the final date for department assistantships is 1 February 2027.
Can I get an assistantship with IELTS at FSU statistics?
No. The department says an international applicant who wants to be considered for an assistantship must submit a TOEFL score, with at least 90 overall and 23 in speaking. IELTS 6.5 is enough for admission as a self-funded student only. Spring entrants aren't considered for assistantships at all, so apply for fall.
Can a BPharm or life sciences graduate apply?
Only if the transcript shows the maths. The department expects Calculus 1 to 3, linear algebra, a probability course and an applied statistics course, and year one is statistical theory. Most BPharm and BSc Biotechnology degrees don't include that sequence. Without it, a public health master's is a better fit.
Does FSU accept a three-year Indian bachelor's degree for this course?
FSU doesn't say either way. It asks for a degree comparable to a US bachelor's with a 3.0 upper-division GPA, and a NACES course-by-course evaluation decides that. Get the evaluation first, and pay the USD 30 application fee only if it reports a bachelor's equivalent. A four-year BTech or BSc Honours is the safer case.
Is FSU MS Biostatistics STEM designated for OPT?
Yes. FSU lists the biostatistics master's under CIP code 26.1102, and that code is on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List dated 22 July 2024. Graduates can apply for 12 months of OPT and then a 24-month STEM extension. Check that the code on your I-20 is 26.1102.
How is MS Biostatistics different from MS Statistics at FSU?
Both are 36 credit hours with the same theory core, but Biostatistics requires epidemiology, clinical trials and one of survival analysis, longitudinal analysis or SAS. It also carries a different STEM code, 26.1102. The department names it, with the mathematical statistics track, as the best preparation for its PhD programmes.
