What is the FSU MS in Mechanical Engineering, and what does it cost?

FSU’s MS in Mechanical Engineering is a 30-credit degree run by the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering in Tallahassee, with thesis, non-thesis and Sustainable Energy routes. Fall 2027 entrants pay USD 1,281.77 per credit hour, so tuition alone comes to USD 38,453.10. With living, insurance and visa fees, the full plan is about INR 99.05 lakh.

Every route starts with one required course, EML 5060 Analysis in Mechanical Engineering I, and then goes either into a research thesis or into seven Mechanical Engineering courses. This page is written for the Fall 2027 intake. FSU hasn’t yet published its Fall 2027 I-20 funds table or its 2027-28 insurance premium, so those two figures are the 2026-27 ones and are labelled that way.

How much does the FSU MS in Mechanical Engineering cost an Indian student?

Plan for INR 99.05 lakh, USD 103,462.10, for the whole degree. The one-year USD 21,179 figure on FSU’s older I-20 table isn’t this degree’s bill. Its 30 credits alone cost USD 38,453.10 at the Fall 2027 rate, and 22 months of Tallahassee living cost more than that.

Total, full programmeINR 99.05 lakhUSD 103,462.10August 2027 to May 2029

FSU's I-20 needs proof of USD 49,944, about INR 47.81 lakh, for the first year on its 2026 table, and that money stays yours. The law sets a USD 250 visa integrity fee at visa issue, but we couldn't confirm on 24 September 2026 that it's being collected, so it's outside the total. Converted at INR 95.7310 per USD, the FBIL reference rate for 23 September 2026 shown by the RBI. Flights and rental deposits are excluded.

The tuition row is 30 credit hours at USD 1,281.77, FSU’s out-of-state graduate rate for Fall 2027 entry, which the Board of Trustees approved on 28 August 2026. Engineering carries no extra differential. FSU’s local fees are set to rise about 5% a year from 2027-28, so credits taken in 2028-29 may cost a few dollars more each.

Living uses FSU’s 2026-27 off-campus budget of USD 22,906 for nine months, spread as USD 2,545 a month over all 22 months, summer 2028 included. The department’s own handbook says on-campus housing is usually reserved for undergraduates, so an off-campus flat is the realistic case.

Two things move this total. The department’s own planning figure is 27 credits a year, 9 of them in summer, and a student who can do that could finish in December 2028 and save about five months of living, roughly USD 12,700. A non-mechanical graduate told to take remedial courses pays for them at the same per-credit rate, up to USD 15,381 for 12 credits, and may need an extra semester.

Thesis students are considered for assistantships automatically, with no separate form. The department says an assistantship pays USD 19,200 to 22,000 a year with a waiver of 9 to 12 credits a semester. The waiver doesn’t touch fees or insurance, and non-thesis students aren’t in the assistantship pool at all.

Can an Indian engineering graduate get into FSU's MS in Mechanical Engineering?

Yes, if your bachelor’s is in engineering or an approved science and your upper-division GPA works out to 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. The department's admission page waives the GRE for master’s applicants, wants IELTS 6.5 or an equivalent, and won’t review an Indian transcript without a NACES course-by-course evaluation.

FSU works out the upper-division GPA itself, from the term in which you attempted your 60th credit hour to the end of the degree. It doesn’t publish a conversion table for Indian percentages or CGPA, so the evaluator’s number is the one that counts, and a strong final two years matters more than your first-year marks.

Use the department’s English figures, not older ones you’ll find online. Duolingo is 125 for FSU applicants, and the 120 you may see elsewhere is FAMU’s minimum. India isn’t on FSU’s exemption list, so an English-medium degree doesn’t excuse you from the test.

Six rules that cost Indian applicants this intake

  1. Treat 15 May as the last day, not 1 July

The department’s table says the Fall final deadline is 1 July, and aggregators repeat it. The line above that table is the one that governs you.

“May 15 is the deadline for international students living outside the United States to apply for an I-20 for the fall semester.”FAMU-FSU Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

The department’s July 2025 handbook goes further and gives 1 May as the final Fall deadline. Submit by 15 January 2027 and neither date can hurt you.

  2. Budget for remedial credits if your degree isn't mechanical

An electrical, civil, chemical, physics or computer science graduate is eligible, but the committee checks your transcript for statics, dynamics, thermodynamics, heat transfer and fluid mechanics. Missing areas become conditions of admission.

“These courses will be considered remedial and will not count toward the student’s degree program requirements.”MAE Graduate Student Handbook, July 2025

The bulletin caps it at up to 12 credit hours. At USD 1,281.77 a credit, that’s up to USD 15,381, about INR 14.72 lakh, before the extra months of rent.

  3. Get the GRE waiver in writing, because the bulletin still asks for 155 and 150

The admission page’s banner says the GRE is waived for all engineering master’s applicants. Its own requirement list says the waiver runs through Fall 2026. The 2026-27 bulletin hasn’t caught up at all.

“Applicants must have at least a 3.0 upper-division GPA and a Quantitative GRE score of 155 and Verbal GRE score of 150.”FSU Graduate Bulletin 2026-27

Email the department to confirm the waiver covers Fall 2027 before you skip the test. If you already have a GRE of Q155 and V150 or better, send it anyway.

  4. A three-year degree goes to the evaluator before it goes to FSU

Neither the department nor the Graduate School says whether a three-year Indian BSc counts. FSU asks for a degree comparable to a US bachelor’s and lets the NACES course-by-course evaluation decide. A four-year BE or BTech is the safe case. With a three-year BSc, get the evaluation first and pay FSU’s USD 30 fee only if it reports a bachelor’s equivalent.

  5. Choose thesis for the funding chance, never because you're sure of funding

Assistantships are open to thesis and PhD students only, and the college is blunt about who usually gets them. Its funding page says assistantships go mainly to PhD students, with some money for competitive MS thesis students.

Your I-20 needs the full USD 49,944 shown anyway, and FSU says a student who proves family funding must stay on it for that period.

  6. Don't apply to the Aerospace MS on an F-1 visa

The same department runs an Aerospace Engineering MS, and it’s closed to you.

“International students who need an F-1 visa, should not apply to the Aerospace Engineering program at this time.”FAMU-FSU Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Apply to the Mechanical Engineering major and build aerospace depth through the fluids and gas dynamics courses instead.

How do you apply to FSU's mechanical engineering MS for Fall 2027?

You file one application, through FSU or FAMU, and three outside parties feed it, the credential evaluator, the test agency and your recommenders. Work backwards from the 15 January 2027 priority date, which is also the date for first consideration for assistantships.

Apply online through FSU's Graduate School, pay the USD 30 fee, order the course-by-course evaluation from your status page, have the test agency send scores to FSU code 5219, and let your three recommenders submit their letters inside the application. Thesis applicants add the Graduate Faculty Preference Form. After admission, FSU's Center for Global Engagement issues the I-20 once your funding papers clear.

The allowances are Nbyula planning estimates, not processing times published by Florida State University.

The coursework is the same whichever university you apply through, but you receive one university’s diploma, and the fees and insurance on this page are FSU’s. Apply through FSU if you want these numbers to be your numbers.

Three dates sit on the department’s page and they mean different things. 15 January is the priority and assistantship date, 15 May is the last date to apply for an I-20 if you live outside the US, and 1 July is the final date for applicants who don’t need one. The department also says no late applications are accepted.

Why 15 May is too late in practice

An offer in late May leaves June and July for the I-20, the SEVIS payment and a US visa interview in India, and you don’t control when an interview slot opens. Treat 15 January as your real deadline.

What jobs and pay can an FSU mechanical engineering master's lead to?

FSU publishes no placement rate, salary or employer list for this MS. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median mechanical engineer’s pay at USD 104,110 in May 2025 and projects 11% job growth from 2025 to 2035. The degree’s STEM code gives you up to three years on OPT to find that job.

FSU master's cohort18 degreesMechanical Engineering master's degrees awarded in 2024-25, all students, FSU Fact Book

The BLS figures describe every US mechanical engineer and say nothing about FSU graduates. The cohort count covers all students, not only international ones.

We checked the department’s graduate pages, its 2024 annual report and its July 2025 handbook for placement data. None gives a master’s employment rate or names recruiters. The bulletin’s line about graduates entering energy, aerospace, automotive and manufacturing industries describes the bachelor’s degree, so we haven’t used it here.

Both majors, Mechanical Engineering and Sustainable Energy, carry CIP 14.1901 on FSU's STEM list, and 14.1901 is on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List dated 22 July 2024. That makes a graduate eligible for 12 months of OPT and a 24-month STEM extension, provided the I-20 shows that code.

For the H-1B, the weighted lottery gives a level IV wage four entries and a level I wage one, and that applies to the master’s cap too. The USD 100,000 payment under the 2025 proclamation was renewed on 18 September 2026, and DHS says it’ll collect again if the court order is lifted. A separate proposed fee of USD 103,265 on every cap petition is still only a proposal.

How is FSU ranked for engineering in 2026?

Times Higher Education puts FSU in the 251 to 300 band for engineering in its 2026 subject table. Treat that as context, not an admission rule. It ranks FSU’s engineering as a whole, not this department or the joint college, and we couldn’t find a QS subject position for mechanical engineering.

Who should apply to FSU's mechanical engineering MS, and who shouldn't?

The best fit is a BE or BTech mechanical graduate who can pay the full cost and wants US industry work on STEM OPT. The weakest fits are an aerospace aspirant on an F-1 visa, since the Aerospace MS is closed to F-1 students, and anyone who needs funding for a non-thesis degree.

VerdictYour backgroundWhy
Strong fitBE or BTech Mechanical, 3.0 upper-division GPA on evaluation, family-fundedNo remedial risk, no GRE, and the STEM code covers three years of US work permission.
Strong fitMechanical graduate aiming for a PhD or research jobThe thesis route is the only one with an assistantship chance and leads straight into FSU's PhD.
Needs evidenceBTech in electrical, civil, chemical or production engineeringEligible, but you may owe up to 12 remedial credits that add up to INR 14.72 lakh.
Needs evidenceGraduate interested in fuel cells, power generation or energy systemsThe Sustainable Energy major fits, but it's thesis only, so you need an adviser.
Needs evidenceThree-year BSc in physics or mathematicsThe field is allowed, but the evaluation must call it a bachelor's equivalent and remedial credits are likely.
Do not shortlistWants an aerospace engineering master's on an F-1 visaFSU can't enrol F-1 students in its Aerospace MS.
Do not shortlistNeeds an assistantship to afford a non-thesis degreeAssistantships go to thesis and PhD students only, and even they aren't promised one.

Pick the thesis route only if you want research or a PhD and can find a faculty adviser early. It’s the only route with a funding chance, but it ties your finish date to a defence held at least two weeks before FSU’s manuscript deadline.

The non-thesis route is the plain industry option, with seven Mechanical Engineering courses, three electives, no design project since Fall 2019 and no funding. Most Indian applicants planning to work in the US after graduation will find it the simpler plan, as long as the family budget covers every row of the cost table.

What do the 30 credit hours in FSU's mechanical engineering MS contain?

Every route totals 30 credit hours and starts with EML 5060. The table follows the department's published structure, where thesis students pick two core courses from one of three areas. Course lists change from year to year, so check them again when you register.

  • The Mechanical Engineering thesis major takes EML 5060 and two core courses from one area (9), two more Mechanical Engineering courses (6), three electives (9) and thesis (6)
  • The Sustainable Energy major takes a 15-credit core of EML 5060 and the four energy courses, three electives (9) and thesis (6)
  • The non-thesis route takes seven graduate Mechanical Engineering courses (21), which the handbook says must include EML 5060, and three electives (9), with at least 27 letter-graded credits
  • Electives may come from any engineering, mathematics or science department; remedial courses set at admission sit outside the 30 credits
  • Keep a cumulative 3.00 GPA every term; after two C grades the department requires a repeat

The structure is loose by design. Nine elective credits can come from any engineering, mathematics or science department, so a robotics student can take computer science courses, and one elective can be supervised research. That freedom is why the entry check on your undergraduate mechanical core is strict.

Credit values shown are the three-credit standard the department uses for its core lists. Directed study and supervised research can carry other credit values, and supervised research is capped at 5 credits.

Should you shortlist FSU's MS in Mechanical Engineering?

Shortlist it if you hold a mechanical engineering degree with a 3.0 upper-division record and can fund about INR 99 lakh without an assistantship, and only then. The department waives the GRE for master's applicants, so your transcript and its NACES evaluation do almost all the deciding.

What you get is a flexible 30-credit degree on STEM code 14.1901, which opens up to 36 months of OPT, at a public university's out-of-state rate. What it costs you is time. At FSU's 9-credit full-time load it's four semesters in Tallahassee, and the non-thesis route, the one most Indian applicants pick, comes with no funding at all.

Two things are genuinely hard here. If your bachelor's isn't in mechanical engineering, the admissions committee can make you take up to 12 credits of undergraduate mechanical courses that don't count toward the degree, which is up to USD 15,381 at the Fall 2027 rate, about INR 14.72 lakh on top of this plan. And the department's assistantships, USD 19,200 to 22,000 a year plus a tuition waiver, go only to thesis and PhD students, competitively, and the college says they go mainly to PhD students.

If aerospace is what you really want, this is the wrong door. FSU isn't authorised to enrol F-1 students in its Aerospace Engineering MS, so an Indian student can only study aerospace topics inside this mechanical degree.

Key takeaways
  • FSU's MS in Mechanical Engineering is 30 credit hours at USD 1,281.77 each for Fall 2027 entry, so tuition is USD 38,453.10.
  • The full two-year plan comes to about INR 99.05 lakh, USD 103,462.10, with 22 months of living and two years of compulsory FSU insurance.
  • An Indian applicant living in India must apply by 15 May 2027 for an I-20, and 15 January 2027 is the date that keeps assistantships in play.
  • Graduates without a mechanical degree can be required to take up to 12 remedial credits, up to USD 15,381, that don't count toward the MS.
  • Assistantships worth USD 19,200 to 22,000 a year go only to competitive thesis and PhD students, never to the non-thesis route.
  • Both majors carry CIP 14.1901, which is on the DHS STEM list, so graduates can use 12 months of OPT plus a 24-month STEM extension.

Frequently asked questions

What is the total cost of MS in Mechanical Engineering at FSU for Indian students?

Plan for about INR 99.05 lakh, or USD 103,462.10, for the full degree starting Fall 2027. That covers 30 credits at USD 1,281.77 each, 22 months of off-campus living at FSU's own budget, books, two years of compulsory FSU insurance, and the application, SEVIS and visa fees. Flights and rental deposits are extra.

Is GRE required for MS Mechanical Engineering at FSU?

No, the FAMU-FSU mechanical engineering department currently waives the GRE for master's applicants. Its own page also says the waiver runs through Fall 2026, and FSU's 2026-27 bulletin still lists Quantitative 155 and Verbal 150. Get written confirmation that the waiver covers Fall 2027 before you drop the test from your plan.

What is the last date to apply to FSU MS Mechanical Engineering for Fall 2027?

For an applicant living in India, 15 May 2027 is the last date to apply for an I-20 for Fall. The department asks international applicants to apply by 15 January 2027, which is also the assistantship date. The 1 July final date is for applicants who don't need a new I-20 from abroad.

Can I apply to FSU MS Mechanical Engineering with an electrical or civil engineering degree?

Yes, any engineering degree is accepted, as are chemistry, computer science, materials science, mathematics and physics. Without a mechanical degree, the committee can require up to 12 credits of undergraduate mechanical courses as a condition of admission. They don't count toward the MS and cost up to USD 15,381 at the Fall 2027 rate.

Do master's students get assistantships in FSU mechanical engineering?

Only thesis students can, and competitively. The department pays assistants USD 19,200 to 22,000 a year with a tuition waiver for 9 to 12 credits a semester, but the college says assistantships go mainly to PhD students. Non-thesis students are self-funded, and the waiver never covers fees or insurance.

Does FSU accept a three-year Indian bachelor's degree for MS Mechanical Engineering?

FSU hasn't published a rule either way. It asks for a degree comparable to a US bachelor's with a 3.0 upper-division GPA, and a NACES course-by-course evaluation decides comparability. A four-year BE or BTech is the safe case. With a three-year BSc, get the evaluation before paying FSU's USD 30 application fee.

Can international students study aerospace engineering at FSU?

Not in the Aerospace Engineering MS. FSU and FAMU aren't yet authorised to enrol F-1 students in the aerospace master's or PhD, and the department tells F-1 applicants not to apply. An Indian student can take the Mechanical Engineering MS instead and build aerospace depth through its fluid mechanics and gas dynamics courses.

Is FSU MS Mechanical Engineering a STEM degree with OPT extension?

Yes. FSU lists both majors, Mechanical Engineering and Sustainable Energy, under CIP code 14.1901, and that code is on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List dated 22 July 2024. Graduates can use 12 months of OPT and apply for a 24-month STEM extension, provided the I-20 carries that code.
