What is the FSU MS Information Technology, and what does it cost an Indian student?
FSU’s Master of Science in Information Technology is a coursework-only degree from the School of Information in Tallahassee. The minimum is 32 credit hours, but every course carries 3, so you’ll take 33 at the Fall 2027 rate of USD 1,281.77 per credit hour. Over two academic years that comes to about INR 102.73 lakh.
The campus version is a hybrid. Most iSchool classes meet live on Zoom one evening a week, and the school runs only two face-to-face classes each Fall and Spring, which happens to be exactly the in-person minimum an F-1 student needs. This page covers the Fall 2027 intake. FSU hasn’t yet published its Fall 2027 health insurance premium, a Fall 2027 I-20 funds table or which courses will be taught face-to-face in 2027-28.
How much does the FSU MS Information Technology cost in total?
Plan on about INR 102.73 lakh, or USD 107,307, for the whole degree, not the USD 21,179 figure that circulates online. That older number is FSU’s 2026 I-20 tuition line for 18 credits at last year’s rate. This total takes 33 credits at the Fall 2027 rate, 22 months of FSU’s living budget, compulsory insurance and visa costs.
| Item | INR | Local currency | When it is due |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tuition and per-credit fees, 33 credits at USD 1,281.77 | INR 40.49 lakh | USD 42,298.41 | Each semester, by credits taken |
| Facility fee and FSUCard fee, 4 semesters | INR 9,573 | USD 100 | Each semester |
| Books and supplies, 4 semesters at USD 690 | INR 2.64 lakh | USD 2,760 | Each semester |
| Living, 22 months at USD 2,545 | INR 53.60 lakh | USD 55,990 | Monthly, Aug 2027 to May 2029 |
| FSU health insurance, 2 years at USD 2,797 | INR 5.36 lakh | USD 5,594 | Billed each year, no waiver |
| Graduate application fee | INR 2,872 | USD 30 | When you apply |
| SEVIS I-901 fee | INR 33,506 | USD 350 | Before the visa interview |
| F-1 visa application fee | INR 17,710 | USD 185 | Before the visa interview |
| Total, Fall 2027 to Spring 2029 | INR 102.73 lakh | USD 107,307.41 | Across 22 months |
The I-20 needs proof of USD 49,944 for the first year on FSU's 2026 table, which is cash-flow evidence that stays your money, not an extra cost. The USD 250 visa integrity fee is in US law, but we couldn't confirm on 24 September 2026 that it's being collected, so it isn't in the total. Converted at INR 95.7310 per USD, the FBIL reference rate for 23 September 2026 shown on rbi.org.in. Flights and the online class fee are not included.
The tuition row is FSU’s whole per-credit charge for an out-of-state graduate student. The 2026-27 rate is USD 1,278.04, and the Board of Trustees approved USD 1,281.77 from Fall 2027 on 28 August 2026. The state sets the tuition part, so 2028-29 can move again, and FSU’s international office tells students to allow for rises of up to 15% a year.
The degree needs 12 core credits and at least 20 elective credits. Every iSchool master’s course carries 3 credits, so seven electives give 21 and the real total is 33, one course above the published 32. That extra course adds USD 1,281.77, about INR 1.23 lakh.
Online classes cost a little more. The iSchool says online graduate courses carry an auxiliary fee, and it lists USD 1,308.04 per credit hour for a non-resident living in Leon County, where Tallahassee sits, which is USD 30 above the campus rate. About 12 online credits would add roughly USD 360, which isn’t in the total because FSU doesn’t state the fee by itself.
The 22 months run from arrival in August 2027 to May 2029, which is four Fall and Spring semesters at FSU’s standard I-20 load of 9 credits, with 6 in the last one. Living uses FSU’s nine-month off-campus graduate budget of USD 22,906, or USD 2,545 a month, and counts Summer 2028 as well. If you take 6 online credits in Summer 2028, which FSU allows for continuing F-1 students, you can finish in December 2028 and spend about USD 13,400 less.
Health insurance isn’t optional. From 2026-27 FSU enrols every F-1 student in its own plan automatically with no waiver, at USD 2,797 a year for 2026-27, so an Indian policy can’t replace it.
Funding is thin. The iSchool handbook describes teaching, research and administrative assistantships, but says the tuition waiver covers the matriculation fee at the in-state rate only, and it gives no count of awards for MSIT students. The Graduate School calls assistantship funds very limited, and the reduced market rate the iSchool offers is for its MS in Information, not this degree. Budget as if you’ll pay the full amount.
Can an Indian graduate meet the FSU MS Information Technology entry rules?
Yes, if your transcript shows 12 credits of IT coursework or you have two years of IT work, and your final two years convert to a 3.0 GPA. The department’s own English bar is TOEFL 96 on the old scale, above FSU’s university minimum of 80. The MSIT application list doesn’t ask for a GRE.
| Requirement | Published rule | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor's degree (India) | A degree comparable to a US bachelor's, judged through a NACES course-by-course evaluation | Order the evaluation before you pay the application fee |
| Upper-division GPA | Minimum 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, counted from the term of your 60th credit onwards | Ask the evaluator for the upper-division GPA, not only the overall one |
| IT background | 12 credits of IT-related coursework, or 2 years of professional IT experience | Name each IT course with its credits in your statement of purpose |
| Credential evaluation (India) | Course-by-course evaluation from a NACES member; The Evaluation Company is FSU's partner | Use the FSU pathway that appears after part 1 of the application |
| English test (India) | TOEFL iBT 96 before 21 January 2026 or 4.5 after, IELTS 6.5, or Duolingo 125 | Have scores sent from the test body before 15 January 2027 |
| English waiver (India) | Only for a bachelor's or master's from a US institution | Take a test even if your degree was taught in English |
| GRE or GMAT | Not in the MSIT application requirements for Fall 2027 | Don't book a GRE for this programme alone |
| Application file | USD 30 graduate application, resume, departmental application, one-page statement of purpose, official transcripts | Write the statement yourself, since the school requires original content |
| I-20 funds (India) | USD 49,944 for the first year on FSU's 2026 table, documents dated within six months | Get a signed bank letter on the bank's letterhead |
| F-1 enrolment | 9 credits each Fall and Spring, at least 6 of them in person | Ask advising which two classes run face-to-face each term |
The IT prerequisite is where most Indian non-IT files stop. Most BCA, BSc Computer Science, BSc IT and BTech transcripts show 12 IT credits within the first two years. A BCom or BA graduate needs either computing papers on the marksheet or two years in an IT role, and neither the programme page nor the handbook offers a bridging route for an applicant living abroad.
Documents are where Indian files lose weeks. FSU treats a transcript as official only when it comes from the university or the evaluator, not from you, and it rejects notarised copies. Ask your university early for a sealed consolidated marksheet and the degree or provisional certificate, because the evaluator can’t start without them.
FSU counts every graded attempt in the upper-division GPA. Its rule reads “all work attempted”, so a paper you failed and later cleared is likely to count twice in the evaluator’s average. That’s our reading of the rule, and FSU publishes no separate policy on backlogs.
Six rules that catch Indian MSIT applicants
Plan around the two face-to-face classes, not your wish list
The iSchool’s course rotation says“Two face-to-face classes will be offered every fall and spring semester.”FSU School of Information, course rotation schedule
FSU’s international office needs 6 in-person credits out of 9 each regular term, so an F-1 student takes both of those classes every Fall and Spring. Before accepting the offer, email ischooladvising@cci.fsu.edu and ask which courses ran face-to-face in the last two years and whether they count toward the MSIT.Apply by 15 January, not the 1 July on the programme page
The programme page lists “Fall: July 1”. The Graduate School tells international applicants“FSU has a priority international deadline to receive applications by January 15th for consideration.”FSU Graduate School, international admissions
An admit in July leaves no time for the I-20, the SEVIS payment and a visa slot before August classes.A BCom or BA with no computing papers fails the IT prerequisite
The rule is “12 credits of information technology related coursework, OR 2 years of professional experience in the information technology field” on the programme page. A strong GPA doesn’t substitute for it. If your transcript shows one or two computer papers, count their credits after the evaluation converts them, before you apply.
Score TOEFL 96, not the university's 80
FSU’s Graduate School minimum is iBT 80, or 4.0 on the new scale. The iSchool sets “TOEFL iBT (taken before January 21, 2026): Minimum Total Score of 96” and 4.5 after that date. IELTS 6.5 and Duolingo 125 match the university bar. PTE isn’t on the programme’s list, so confirm it with the department before you book one.
A three-year degree is decided by the evaluation, not by FSU's website
No FSU page says whether a three-year Indian bachelor’s is comparable to a US degree, and the iSchool publishes nothing on it either. FSU asks for a comparable degree with a 3.0 upper-division GPA and a NACES course-by-course evaluation. Get the evaluation before paying the USD 30 fee. A four-year BE, BTech or BCA with a completed master’s is the safe case.
The GPA counts from your 60th credit, not your whole degree
The programme says“The upper division GPA is comprised of the grades of the courses taken in the semester where the 60th credit hour is earned and beyond.”FSU School of Information, MSIT admissions
For most Indian degrees that means roughly the last half. A weak first year doesn’t hurt, but a weak final year does, and FSU publishes no percentage or CGPA equivalent of 3.0.
How and when should you apply for the FSU MS Information Technology for Fall 2027?
There are four hand-overs, and two sit outside FSU. The evaluator, the test body, FSU and the US consulate each need time, so work backwards from the 15 January 2027 international priority date. The 1 July Fall date on the programme page leaves too little time for an I-20 and a visa.
Apply on FSU's graduate application portal with the major Information Technology MS, pay the USD 30 fee, complete the School of Information departmental application, and send transcripts through a NACES course-by-course evaluation.
| Start by | Task | Takes | Why this date |
|---|---|---|---|
| 09 Nov 2026 | Take TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo | 60 days | Observed lead time. It leaves room for one retake if you miss TOEFL 96 or IELTS 6.5. |
| 24 Nov 2026 | Order the NACES evaluation | 45 days | Observed lead time. Your university has to send records to the evaluator, which is usually the slowest step for an Indian file. |
| 18 Dec 2026 | Write the statement and resume | 21 days | One page, single-spaced, covering your IT background, why this degree and your plans after it. |
| 08 Jan 2027 | Submit the FSU application | 7 days | Choose Information Technology MS, pay USD 30 and complete the departmental application. |
The allowances are Nbyula planning estimates, not processing times published by Florida State University.
FSU handles the first two hand-overs in sequence. The Graduate School waits for the credential evaluation before it reviews a file with non-US transcripts, and the iSchool then reviews the whole application together. There are no recommendation letters or interviews in the published list.
After an admit, FSU’s international office issues the I-20 once you show the first-year funds. Then you pay the USD 350 SEVIS fee and book the visa interview. Admission is for one term only, so missing Fall 2027 means applying again rather than deferring.
The July date suits applicants already in the US or studying online. An Indian F-1 applicant needs an admit, then an I-20, then a SEVIS payment and a visa slot before classes start in August, so treat 15 January as the real Fall 2027 deadline.
What jobs and pay can you expect after the FSU MS Information Technology?
FSU publishes no placement rate or salary for MSIT graduates. The roles the iSchool names include systems analyst, usability analyst, web developer, network administrator and IT manager. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the May 2025 median for computer systems analysts at USD 105,850 across all experience levels.
| Measure | Figure | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| MSIT placement rate | Not published | Checked the programme page, iSchool career pages and student achievement data |
| MSIT degrees awarded | 112 in 2025-26 | iSchool data covering online and campus students together |
| Computer systems analysts | USD 105,850 | BLS national median, May 2025, growth 8% to 2035 |
| Information security analysts | USD 129,180 | BLS national median, May 2025, growth 21% to 2035 |
| IT managers | USD 175,140 | BLS median, usually after 5 years or more of experience |
| OPT plus STEM OPT | 12 + 24 months | CIP 11.0103 is on the DHS STEM list |
| H-1B master's cap | 20,000 places | On top of 65,000, drawn by wage-weighted lottery |
BLS figures are national medians for whole occupations, not FSU graduate pay. The iSchool's 96.2% employment figure belongs to its MS in Information, not this degree.
The STEM extension is the strongest outcome fact on this page. FSU lists the MSIT master’s under CIP 11.0103, Information Technology, and that code is on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List dated 22 July 2024. With 12 months of OPT and a 24-month extension you’d have up to three years of US work authorisation, if the I-20 carries that code.
The iSchool names roles but no employers, and FSU’s MSIT numbers mix online part-time students, many already working, with campus students. So the 112 degrees awarded in 2025-26 tell you the programme is active, not how a new F-1 graduate fares.
For H-1B, a US master’s gives you a second draw from the 20,000-place pool, but the lottery has favoured higher wage levels since the FY 2027 season. The USD 100,000 payment under the September 2025 proclamation doesn’t apply to a granted change of status inside the US, and a court order has blocked its guidance since June 2026, though DHS says it still plans to collect if that order is lifted.
The 96.2% figure you may see on the iSchool’s pages is for its MS in Information, the library and information science degree, and FSU publishes no equivalent for the MSIT. We haven’t used it, and you shouldn’t either when comparing this degree with others.
Realistic first roles are analyst, UX, support-to-systems and IT project positions. A manager’s median needs five or more years of experience, so don’t use the USD 175,140 figure to judge a first offer.
Where does Florida State University rank, and does it matter for the MSIT?
Ranking tables don't rank FSU's campus MSIT, so the university's overall position is context, never an admission rule. QS places FSU at 549 in its 2026 world table and Times Higher Education places it in the 301 to 350 band for 2026.
| Publisher | Position | Table and year |
|---|---|---|
| QS | 549 | World University Rankings 2026, overall |
| Times Higher Education | 301 to 350 | World University Rankings 2026, overall |
Who should apply to the FSU MS Information Technology, and who shouldn't?
The clearest fit is an IT graduate or working IT professional who wants systems, usability and IT management skills rather than deeper programming. It's a poor fit for a CSE graduate chasing software engineering jobs, for a commerce or arts graduate with no computing record, and for anyone counting on a funded assistantship.
| Verdict | Your background | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Strong fit | BCA, BSc IT or BTech IT graduate heading for systems analyst or UX work | The transcript clears the 12-credit IT rule, and the core courses in usability and systems management match those roles. |
| Strong fit | Two or more years in IT support, QA or operations, aiming for a lead role | Work experience alone meets the prerequisite, and the management and project courses fit the step up. |
| Needs evidence | Graduate set on cybersecurity or health informatics | Certificates exist in both, but the classes you take in person each term aren't yours to choose. |
| Needs evidence | Three-year BSc or BCA graduate with no master's | Entry rests on the credential evaluation, and FSU doesn't say in advance how it treats a three-year degree. |
| Do not shortlist | BTech CSE graduate aiming for software development jobs | The MSIT has no programming-heavy core, and FSU's MS Computer Science is the closer match. |
| Do not shortlist | BCom or BA graduate with no computing papers and no IT job | The published 12-credit IT prerequisite rules the application out. |
| Do not shortlist | Anyone who needs an assistantship to afford the degree | The iSchool publishes no MSIT award numbers, and FSU describes its funds as very limited. |
The degree suits people who like the space between users and systems. Usability Analysis and Information Behavior are two of the four core courses, so a quarter of the credits go on how people use information, not on code.
It suits a planner, too. With only two in-person classes a term and electives that rotate, you’ll get the most from it if you map all four semesters before arriving and email advising early each term.
It also suits someone comfortable with evening study. Most classes meet on Zoom between 6pm and 10pm Eastern time, and you’ll spend at least one evening a week online even while living in Tallahassee.
What courses make up the FSU MS Information Technology?
Four core courses are fixed and everything else is chosen from the iSchool’s graduate list plus four project management and communication courses. Each course is 3 credits, so the 32-credit minimum becomes 11 courses and 33 credits in practice. For an F-1 student, two of each semester’s courses are whichever ones run face-to-face.

The note “Elective” applies to 47 components in this table.
- Complete LIS 5203, LIS 5275, LIS 5408 and LIS 5487 with a C- or better
- Take at least 20 elective credits, which means seven 3-credit courses
- Count no more than 12 credits from outside the School of Information, each at B or better
- Eight library-focused courses don't count, among them LIS 5485, LIS 5564 and LIS 5736
- Finish within seven years of your first graduate course
Most Indian applicants will want to steer their seven electives toward one of three clusters. For data work that means Database Management Systems, Data Mining and Analytics and Artificial Intelligence Applications. For security it means Organizational Information Security, Cyber Defense Ops and Response and Network Administration. For UX it means Introduction to Information Architecture, Web Site Development and Administration and Advanced Web Applications on top of the Usability Analysis core.
The rotation matters as much as the list. In the current schedule Organizational Information Security and Artificial Intelligence Applications run only in Spring, Data Mining and Analytics runs once in 2027-28, in Spring 2028, and Network Administration runs only in Summer. A course you want may not fall in your four semesters. Map your plan against the rotation schedule before you accept, and keep a second choice for every elective.
Eight programs of study, from Cyber Intelligence to Web Design, help you pick electives but don’t appear on the diploma or transcript. A graduate certificate, 12 credits with a B in each course, does appear as a separate award and can be earned inside the MSIT electives.
Should you shortlist the FSU MS Information Technology?
Shortlist it if you have IT coursework or two years of IT work and want a management-side IT degree, and only if you can live with a timetable the school sets for you. What keeps your F-1 status is FSU’s rule of 6 in-person credits in every 9, and the iSchool runs just two face-to-face classes a term.
What you get is breadth on the people and systems side of IT. Usability, information systems management, project management, cyber defence, health informatics and databases all sit inside one 33-credit plan with no thesis, and a 12-credit graduate certificate can be earned inside your electives. What it costs you is choice, because the in-person half of every semester is decided for you.
Three things are genuinely hard here. First, the iSchool doesn't publish which two classes are face-to-face in a given term, so you can't check in advance that they're courses you still need, and a mismatch can mean paying for credits beyond 33. Second, this isn't a programming degree, so a BTech CSE graduate aiming for software engineering jobs is better served by FSU's MS Computer Science. And the programme is shrinking, with MSIT enrolment down from 203 in Fall 2023 to 103 in Fall 2026, only 40 of them full-time.
- FSU's MS Information Technology costs about INR 102.73 lakh, or USD 107,307, over 22 months from Fall 2027, at USD 1,281.77 per credit hour.
- The published minimum is 32 credits, but with 3-credit courses you'll complete 33.
- F-1 students must take 6 in-person credits of every 9, and the iSchool runs only two face-to-face classes each Fall and Spring.
- Entry needs 12 credits of IT coursework or 2 years of IT work, a 3.0 upper-division GPA and TOEFL 96, IELTS 6.5 or Duolingo 125.
- Apply by the 15 January 2027 international priority date, since the programme's 1 July date is too late for a visa.
- The degree is on the DHS STEM list under CIP 11.0103, which allows up to 36 months of OPT in total.
Frequently asked questions
What is the total cost of MS Information Technology at FSU for Indian students?
Plan on about INR 102.73 lakh, or USD 107,307, for a Fall 2027 start. That covers 33 credits at USD 1,281.77 each, semester fees, books, 22 months of living at USD 2,545 a month, FSU's compulsory health insurance, the application fee, SEVIS and the visa fee. Flights aren't included.
Can an F-1 student do FSU's MSIT on campus when most classes are online?
Yes, within limits. FSU requires 9 credits each Fall and Spring with at least 6 in person, and the iSchool runs two face-to-face classes each of those terms. An F-1 student therefore takes both in-person classes every semester plus online ones. Ask advising which courses will run face-to-face.
Is GRE required for MS IT at Florida State University?
No. The MSIT application list for Fall 2027 asks for a resume, a departmental application, a statement of purpose, transcripts and English scores, with no GRE or GMAT. FSU also has no university-wide test requirement for master's programmes. An older 2024-25 bulletin still mentions the GRE, but it's out of date.
What TOEFL or IELTS score does FSU MSIT need?
The department asks for TOEFL iBT 96 if taken before 21 January 2026, or 4.5 on the new scale after that, IELTS 6.5 or Duolingo 125. That TOEFL bar is higher than FSU's university minimum of 80. An English-medium Indian degree doesn't waive the test, since only a US degree does.
Can I apply to FSU MSIT without an IT background?
Only with two years of professional IT experience. The programme asks for 12 credits of IT coursework or two years of IT work. A BCom or BA graduate with no computing papers and no IT job doesn't meet it, and there's no bridging route published for applicants living outside the US.
What is the application deadline for FSU MSIT Fall 2027?
The programme page says 1 July, but that's too late for an Indian student to get an I-20 and a visa. FSU's Graduate School sets 15 January as its priority international deadline, so aim to submit by 15 January 2027, with test scores and the credential evaluation already sent.
Is FSU MS Information Technology a STEM degree?
Yes. FSU lists the MSIT under CIP code 11.0103, Information Technology, and that code is on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List. With the code on your I-20 you can apply for 12 months of OPT and then a 24-month STEM extension, if your employer meets the programme's rules.
Does FSU accept a three-year Indian bachelor's degree for MSIT?
FSU doesn't say either way. It asks for a degree comparable to a US bachelor's and a NACES course-by-course evaluation that decides comparability. Get the evaluation done before paying the USD 30 application fee. A four-year BE, BTech or BCA, or a three-year degree plus a master's, is the safer case.
