What is the FSU MS Statistics?

FSU’s Master of Science in Statistics is a 36 credit hour degree from the Department of Statistics, with a 32 credit Statistical Data Science major inside the same award. At the Fall 2027 rate of USD 1,281.77 a credit hour, the full two years with living, insurance and visa fees comes to about INR 106.41 lakh.

Three routes sit inside the degree, and you commit to one on the program of study FSU asks you to file in your first term. The applied track and the mathematical track each run four terms and 36 credits, and the data science major runs three terms and 32 credits with SAS, R and a consulting capstone. This page is written for the Fall 2027 intake. FSU hasn’t yet published its Fall 2027 I-20 funding table or 2027-28 insurance premiums, so those lines use the current figures.

How much does the FSU MS Statistics cost for an Indian student?

About INR 106.41 lakh, or USD 111,153, for the 36 credit route over 22 months. Aggregator figures near INR 20 lakh are one year of tuition at last year’s rate. Tuition uses FSU’s approved Fall 2027 per credit rate, and it’s only 42% of the real bill, because living through two summers costs more than the degree.

Total, 36 credit routeINR 106.41 lakhUSD 111,152.72Fall 2027 to Spring 2029

FSU’s I-20 needs proof of USD 49,944 for the first year on its 2026 table. That’s money you show, not an extra cost, and it stays yours. The USD 250 visa integrity fee is in US law but we couldn’t confirm it’s being collected on 24 September 2026, so it’s left out of the total. Converted at INR 95.7310 per USD, the FBIL reference rate for 23 September 2026 shown by the RBI. Flights and housing deposits are excluded.

The tuition line is 36 credits at USD 1,281.77, which is USD 46,143.72, plus USD 20 a term for the facility fee and USD 5 a term for the FSUCard, four terms each. The Board of Trustees approved the higher local fees on 28 August 2026. The approved schedule rises again in 2028-29, so your second year may cost slightly more than this.

Living uses FSU’s own 2026-27 off-campus graduate budget of USD 22,906 for nine months, which works out to USD 2,545 a month. We charge it for all 22 months from August 2027 to May 2029, summers included, because you’re in Tallahassee paying rent whether or not you take summer classes. Books follow the same budget at USD 690 a term.

Insurance isn’t optional. From 2026-27 every F-1 student is automatically enrolled with no waiver, at USD 2,797 a year for 2026-27. Twenty-two months means two plan years. An Indian policy won’t replace it.

The data science major is cheaper because it’s shorter. At 32 credits over Fall 2027, Spring 2028 and Summer 2028, it comes to about USD 79,604, or INR 76.21 lakh, with 13 months of living. FSU doesn’t say whether the third term is summer or the following fall. If it’s fall, add roughly four months of living and a second insurance year.

An assistantship changes the sum less than people expect. FSU’s tuition waivers cover tuition only, so you still pay the per credit fees, the flat term fees and the insurance. Treat any stipend as a bonus that arrives after you’ve already proved the full first-year funds for the I-20.

Can an Indian student get into the FSU MS Statistics?

Yes, with a comparable bachelor’s degree, a 3.0 upper-division GPA and the maths courses the department expects. The GRE is optional. Your file can’t even be reviewed until a NACES credential evaluation of your Indian transcripts reaches FSU, so that evaluation is the first thing to order.

FSU converts your grades through the evaluation, not through a formula you apply yourself. The Graduate School counts upper-division work from the term in which you attempted your 60th credit hour to the end of the degree, which for most Indian four-year degrees is roughly the last two and a half years. A weak first year matters less than a weak final year.

The GRE is optional for this degree and FSU has no university-wide test requirement for master’s programmes. A strong quant score can still help a candidate whose transcript shows only the minimum maths, and it counts for five years.

Indian transcripts rarely use the words Calculus 3. A BTech usually carries Engineering Mathematics papers across the first two years, and a BSc Mathematics carries multivariable calculus, linear algebra and real analysis under its own titles. Your statement of purpose is where you map each FSU expectation to a named paper on your marksheet, with the marks, so the reviewer doesn’t have to guess.

Six rules that decide Indian files

  1. Treat 15 January as your deadline, not 1 July

The department lists 1 July as the general Fall deadline, which is the date aggregators repeat. Its own line for visa applicants is stricter.
“Priority deadline for international students: Jan. 15. (If students will require a new visa for admission, they must apply by this deadline.)”FSU Department of Statistics, Admissions
An Indian passport holder needs a new F-1 visa, so 15 January 2027 is the real cut-off for Fall 2027. Anyone hoping for an assistantship should aim for 1 December 2026.
  2. Show probability on your transcript, whatever the bulletin says

FSU’s 2026-27 bulletin says prior statistics isn’t needed. The department’s admissions page, which the people reading your file wrote, says it expects Calculus 1 to 3, linear algebra, an applied statistics course and a probability course. Where the two disagree, write to the department’s standard. A BSc Mathematics or BTech graduate usually has calculus and linear algebra but may have no probability course, and that gap is worth closing with a credit-bearing course before you apply.

  3. Order the credential evaluation first, especially with a three-year degree

FSU won’t review an Indian file until a NACES evaluation arrives, and no FSU page says whether a three-year BSc counts as comparable to a US bachelor’s. The evaluation decides that. A four-year BTech or BE is the safe case. A three-year graduate should get the evaluation back and check the equivalence line before paying the application fee. A completed Indian master’s after a three-year degree gives you a second route through the graduate-degree rule.

  4. Take TOEFL, not IELTS, if you want a teaching assistantship

IELTS 6.5 gets you admitted. It doesn’t get you into the funding pool.
“If you are an international student and wish to be considered for an assistantship, you cannot waive your TOEFL requirement, and must submit a TOEFL score.”FSU Department of Statistics, Admissions
The bar is 90 overall with 23 in speaking. The department page still quotes the old 0 to 120 scale, while FSU moved to the new 1 to 6 scale for tests from 21 January 2026, so ask the department which new-scale score it accepts before you book.
  5. Apply for fall if you need funding, because spring entry has none

The department admits in spring too, but it says plainly that it doesn’t offer assistantships for spring admission. Its handbook also caps support for a master’s student at two years unless they’re admitted to the PhD. A spring start is fine for a fully self-funded student and a dead end for anyone counting on a stipend or tuition waiver.

  6. Don't book Duolingo on the department's word alone

The department page accepts Duolingo 120. FSU’s 2026-27 General Bulletin asks for 125, and the Graduate School’s international admissions page doesn’t list Duolingo at all. Three official pages, three answers. IELTS or TOEFL avoids the argument, and TOEFL keeps the assistantship door open.

How do you apply to the FSU MS Statistics for Fall 2027?

Four hand-overs sit outside FSU, your college’s transcripts, the NACES evaluator, the English test and your three referees, and all of them must land before the 15 January 2027 international deadline. The plan below works backwards from that date, with 1 December as the target if you want an assistantship.

Your college issues the transcripts, the NACES evaluator turns them into a US equivalence and GPA, ETS or IDP sends the English score, your referees upload letters, and you submit one application on the FSU Graduate School portal. The department reviews it, then FSU's Center for Global Engagement issues the I-20 once you've shown the funds.

The allowances are Nbyula planning estimates, not processing times published by Florida State University.

The admission offer is only half of it. After an offer, you upload bank letters to the Center for Global Engagement for the I-20, pay the USD 350 SEVIS fee, and book a US visa interview in India. Admission to FSU is term specific, so if the visa slot slips past August you reapply rather than defer.

The department also admits for spring, with a general 1 November deadline, but it publishes no separate international date for spring and offers no assistantships to spring entrants. For an Indian applicant who needs a visa and wants any chance of funding, fall is the intake to plan around.

The evaluation is the long pole

The evaluation can’t start until your college releases transcripts, and FSU can’t start until the evaluation lands. That chain is about seven weeks before you’ve written a word, so an applicant who starts in late November has already missed 15 January.

What jobs and pay can you expect after the FSU MS Statistics?

FSU doesn’t publish a placement rate or salary for this degree. US government data does exist for the job it feeds. The BLS puts the median statistician wage at USD 105,650 in May 2025, and says statisticians typically need a master’s degree.

H-1B master's quota20,000 a yearExtra cap places for US master's graduates, still decided by a wage-weighted lottery

BLS figures are national and cover all statisticians, not FSU graduates. Work rights come from federal rules, not from FSU.

Both the 36 credit tracks and the 32 credit data science major carry CIP code 27.0501 on FSU’s STEM list, and 27.0501, Statistics, General, is on the DHS STEM list dated 22 July 2024. That makes you eligible for 12 months of OPT and a 24 month STEM extension, provided your employer and role meet the STEM OPT conditions.

The H-1B is the harder step. USCIS says 20,000 extra cap places go to US master’s graduates, but selection is now weighted by wage level, so a low entry salary gets one entry in the pool. The USD 100,000 payment doesn’t apply to a change of status granted inside the US, is blocked by a court order at present, and a separate proposed fee of USD 103,265 would cover US master’s cases if it becomes final.

The department’s handbook describes the applied track as training for applied statisticians and statistical consultants, and the mathematical track as preparation for industry, government or a PhD. Those are the department’s own descriptions of direction, not outcomes it has measured.

We didn’t quote FSU’s university-wide master’s survey here. An all-FSU employment figure describes law, business and education graduates as much as statisticians, and putting it on this page would pass a university number off as a programme one.

How is FSU ranked for statistics?

US News ranks FSU 36th in Statistics among US graduate programmes in its 2026 science list, which is the subject table that matters here. Rankings are context for a shortlist. They aren’t an admission rule and they say nothing about whether you’ll get funding.

Who should apply to the FSU MS Statistics, and who shouldn't?

It suits a maths, statistics or engineering graduate who wants a working statistician’s training and can pay for two years. It doesn’t suit a commerce graduate without calculus, or anyone whose plan depends on an assistantship. The data science major is the pick if speed and cost matter most.

Biostatistics is a separate FSU master’s with its own page, built around epidemiology and clinical trials, and it’s the better fit only if you want to work on health data.

If your aim is a PhD, the mathematical track is the one the department itself calls the best preparation. The applied track can still lead there, but only after you’ve done the mathematical core and passed the PhD qualifying exam.

Compared with FSU’s interdisciplinary data science master’s, which is a separate degree run jointly with three other departments, this one keeps you inside a single statistics department with one set of advisers and one handbook. That matters most for the mathematical track, where the same faculty run the PhD you might move into.

What will you study in the FSU MS Statistics?

Every course the department lists for the three routes is below, with FSU’s credit hours. The core is regression, distribution theory, inference and computation, and the route you choose decides what sits on top. Weak maths shows up fast here, which is why the entry check asks for calculus and linear algebra.

Degree total, applied or mathematical track36
  • The applied track needs five required courses and at least two listed electives, 36 credit hours in all
  • The mathematical track needs nine required courses and at least three electives, also 36 credit hours
  • The data science major needs nine required courses and electives, 32 credit hours over three terms
  • A thesis replaces two electives with thesis hours and ends in an oral defence
  • No comprehensive exam for the MS; a 3.0 cumulative GPA and at most six credit hours graded S/U
  • A program of study must be filed by the end of your first term

Every route has room for electives from the wider statistics list, except five service courses meant for other departments, and one outside course with the graduate director’s approval. The four SAS-heavy data science courses also count towards FSU’s graduate SAS certificate, which needs a B- in four courses and a portfolio.

The table’s notes say where each course is required, but you don’t take all of them. An applied track student takes the five core courses and at least two electives, then fills the rest of the 36 hours with further statistics courses agreed with an adviser. If you’ve already covered a required course in India, the department won’t let you skip the hours. You swap in a more advanced course instead.

Should you shortlist the FSU MS Statistics?

Shortlist it if your transcript shows three semesters of calculus, linear algebra and ideally probability, and you can fund about INR 106 lakh yourself. The department’s admissions page expects those courses, and that is the check your file meets or fails before GPA matters.

What you get is choice inside one degree. The applied track is built for working statisticians, the mathematical track leads towards a PhD, and the data science major gets you out in three terms with SAS and R. What it costs you is time. Two of the three routes need four terms, so you pay two American years, not one.

Two things are genuinely hard here. Funding exists on paper, since the department pays teaching assistants, but it's fall entry only, it wants a TOEFL of 90 with 23 in speaking, and the Graduate School says funds are very limited, so don't build your budget on it. And a commerce or BBA graduate without calculus and linear algebra on the transcript shouldn't apply at all. The bulletin says prior statistics isn't needed, but it still requires a calculus sequence and a linear algebra course.

Frequently asked questions

What is the total cost of MS Statistics at FSU for Indian students?

For the 36 credit route over 22 months, about INR 106.41 lakh or USD 111,153 at Fall 2027 rates. That covers tuition at USD 1,281.77 a credit hour, living, books, compulsory FSU health insurance, the application, SEVIS and visa fees. The 32 credit data science major comes to about INR 76.21 lakh.

Is GRE required for MS Statistics at FSU?

No. The Department of Statistics says the GRE is optional for its graduate programmes, and FSU has no university-wide test requirement for master's degrees. If you send a score, it counts for five years. A strong quant score can help an applicant whose transcript shows only the minimum maths courses.

What is the last date to apply for Fall 2027?

15 January 2027 for anyone who needs a new US student visa, which covers Indian applicants. The department's general 1 July date is for applicants who don't need a visa. If you want to be considered for a teaching assistantship, apply by 1 December 2026, and 1 February 2027 is the final funding date.

Can I apply to FSU MS Statistics after BCom or BBA?

Only if your transcript shows three semesters of calculus and a linear algebra course, which the bulletin requires. The department also expects an applied statistics course and a probability course. Most BCom and BBA degrees don't include that maths, so those applicants usually need extra coursework before applying.

Does FSU accept a three-year BSc for MS Statistics?

FSU publishes no rule either way. It asks for a degree comparable to a US bachelor's and lets a NACES course-by-course evaluation decide. Order the evaluation before paying the USD 30 fee and read its equivalence line. A four-year BTech or BE, or a completed Indian master's, is the safer case.

Can I get an assistantship in MS Statistics at FSU?

Possibly, but don't budget on it. The department pays teaching assistants, but only for fall entry, it needs TOEFL 90 with 23 in speaking and won't accept a waiver, and the Graduate School says funds are very limited. Master's support also stops after two years unless you're admitted to the PhD.

Is FSU MS Statistics a STEM degree for OPT?

Yes. FSU lists both the Statistics master's and the Statistical Data Science major under CIP code 27.0501, which is on the DHS STEM list dated 22 July 2024. You can use 12 months of OPT and apply for a 24 month STEM extension with an E-Verify employer.

Which IELTS or TOEFL score does FSU MS Statistics need?

IELTS 6.5, PTE 55, or TOEFL iBT 80 for tests before 21 January 2026 and 4.0 on the new scale after. Teaching assistantship candidates need TOEFL 90 with 23 in speaking. Duolingo is listed at 120 by the department and 125 by the bulletin, so avoid it.
