What is the MS Materials Science and Engineering at FSU?

FSU’s MS Materials Science and Engineering is a 30-credit master’s from a graduate-only department in the joint FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, Tallahassee, with a thesis route and a coursework-only route. At FSU’s approved Fall 2027 rate of USD 1,281.77 per credit hour, tuition is USD 38,453, and our two-year all-in figure is about INR 99.05 lakh.

Every student takes three fundamental core courses and one elective core, then specialises. The department’s research leans on the Applied Superconductivity Center and the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, both in Tallahassee. It’s young, too. FSU’s bulletin dates it to 2023, and FSU’s Fact Book shows no master’s degree awarded in the subject in 2024-25. We’ve written this page for Fall 2027 entry. FSU hadn’t published its 2027-28 living budget, insurance premium or I-20 funds table by 24 September 2026, so those rows use 2026-27 figures.

How much does FSU's MS Materials Science and Engineering cost an Indian student?

Plan for USD 103,462, about INR 99.05 lakh, across two years. Totals near USD 33,000 for the whole course, still seen on some listing sites, miss most of it. FSU bills USD 1,281.77 per credit hour for Fall 2027 entrants, and every F-1 student is enrolled in FSU’s health plan with no waiver.

FSU's 2026 I-20 table asks a graduate student to show USD 49,944 for the first year. That's proof of funds that stays in your account, not an extra cost, and the Fall 2027 figure will probably be higher. A USD 250 visa integrity fee is written into US law, but we couldn't confirm on 24 September 2026 that it's being collected, so it isn't in the total. Converted at INR 95.7310 per USD, the FBIL reference rate for 23 September 2026 shown on rbi.org.in. Living uses FSU's 2026-27 off-campus graduate budget of USD 22,906 for nine months, spread at USD 2,545 a month including summers, and flights are excluded.

The department doesn’t publish a duration, so the two years are our plan. FSU’s standard I-20 load for a graduate student is 9 credits in each of Fall and Spring, and 30 credits at that pace need a fourth semester. A student carrying 10 credits a term could finish in December 2028, which takes five months of living off the bill, USD 12,725 or about INR 12.18 lakh. A thesis rarely allows that.

The grade rule can add cost. The department asks for a B or better in every core course, and a student who misses it must retake the course or take a different core course. Each extra 3-credit course costs USD 3,845, about INR 3.68 lakh, on top of the table above.

This table prices the FSU route. The joint college also admits through Florida A&M University, with the same courses but FAMU’s fees and a FAMU diploma. We haven’t costed that route here.

Funding for a master’s student here is thin. The college’s funding page says assistantships are typically reserved for PhD students and that some funding may be available for competitive MS thesis students. FSU gives tuition waivers only to graduate assistants and fellows, and the waiver leaves fees and insurance with you. The coursework-only route carries no funding statement at all, so plan it as fully self-funded.

Can an Indian BTech graduate get into FSU's MS Materials Science and Engineering?

Yes, if your bachelor’s is in one of the department’s eight named fields, your upper-division average reaches 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, and FSU’s credential evaluation finds the degree comparable to a US bachelor’s. You won’t need the GRE, per FSU’s 2026-27 bulletin. You’ll need IELTS 6.5 or an equal score, and three signed letters.

Two offices have to say yes. FSU’s Graduate School checks the degree, the 3.0 average and the English score, and the department then decides whether your subject and research interest fit. A strong GPA in a field outside the department’s list can pass the first check and still fail the second.

The statement of purpose carries more weight here than on a taught course. The department asks for your research and career goals and why your training makes you the right candidate, and it wants every referee to comment on research potential. Name the kind of work you want to do, whether that’s composites, superconducting wire or electron microscopy, and say why Tallahassee.

FSU and the department publish no rule on backlogs. The committee sees the upper-division average your evaluator calculates, so a cleared backlog counts only through the grade it left on your transcript. Ask your evaluator how they treat a failed and repeated subject before you order the report.

Five checks that sink or save an Indian application

  1. Get a written yes if your BTech says metallurgy or materials

This is the rule that matters most for this programme. The department’s admission page accepts a bachelor’s in a fixed list of fields
“BS Degree in Chemical and Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics or Scientific Computing from an accredited college or university.”FAMU-FSU Materials Science and Engineering, admission requirements
FSU’s bulletin describes a wider mix of past students that includes materials science and nuclear engineering. The two pages don’t agree, and the admission page is the one the committee reads. If your degree is metallurgical and materials engineering, ceramics or polymer engineering, send your transcript to the department and ask whether it qualifies. Keep the reply.
  2. Settle three-year degree equivalence before you pay

Neither FSU nor the department says whether a three-year Indian BSc counts. FSU asks for a degree comparable to a US bachelor’s, and the course-by-course evaluation decides that. A four-year BE or BTech is the safe case. A three-year BSc in physics or chemistry is on the department’s subject list but may still fail on length, so get the evaluation first and ask the department before you spend on the application.

  3. Declare your upper-division average, not your aggregate

FSU’s 3.0 is measured on the later part of your degree. The Graduate School says
“The Upper-division undergraduate GPA includes the entire term in which you attempted your 60th credit hour and continues until completion of the baccalaureate degree.”FSU Graduate School, graduate admissions
FSU publishes no table that turns Indian percentages or CGPA into its scale. The evaluator’s figure is the one the committee sees, so a weak first year hurts you less than a weak final year.
  4. Apply through FSU if you want FSU's degree and these costs

The joint college takes applications through either university, and the choice sticks. The department says you’ll only earn a diploma from one university, the one you applied through. The English minimums differ too. Duolingo 125 works for FSU, while FAMU accepts 120. A score of 120 or 124 therefore quietly steers you to the FAMU route, with its own fees and its own diploma.

  5. Don't book the GRE on the strength of an old line

FSU’s own pages disagree on paper. The department’s master’s list says the GRE is waived through Fall 2026, the banner above it says it’s waived for all engineering master’s applicants, and the college’s FSU checklist still asks for GRE scores. The 2026-27 bulletin settles it for now with one sentence, that MS applicants aren’t required to take the GRE. If you want certainty for Fall 2027, ask the department to confirm it in the same email as your degree question.

How and when should you apply to FSU's MS Materials Science and Engineering for Fall 2027?

Expect three hand-overs, with two people outside FSU. You file the application, a NACES evaluator verifies your marks, and the department’s committee decides. Work back from 15 January 2027, the date the department asks applicants living abroad to meet, or from 15 December 2026 if you want funding considered.

Apply once through FSU's Graduate School portal, choose the MS in Materials Science and Engineering, and the department's graduate committee decides.

11 Dec 2026Line up three signed letters on letterhead28 daysOur estimate. Signed letters on college letterhead take longer to collect than online forms.
18 Dec 2026Email the department about your degree21 daysOur estimate. A reply confirming your bachelor's qualifies is worth more than any test score here.
08 Jan 2027Submit the FSU application7 daysPay the USD 30 fee. The committee reviews a file only once every item is in.

The allowances are Nbyula planning estimates, not processing times published by Florida State University.

You own the test score, the transcripts, the letters and the statement. The evaluator owns the course-by-course report. FSU’s Graduate School checks the file is complete, the department decides admissibility, and FSU’s Center for Global Engagement issues the I-20 once you’ve shown the funds.

The department reviews complete files throughout the open period rather than in one batch, so an early file can bring an early answer. If you’re hoping for an assistantship, the date that counts is 15 December 2026. Both the department’s table and FSU’s bulletin tie funding consideration for Fall entry to that day.

Treat 15 May as the last real date

The department’s table shows a 1 July final deadline for Fall. That date is too late for an Indian student. The same page says applicants living outside the US must request the I-20 by 15 May, and US visa appointments in India can take weeks after that.

What jobs and pay can an FSU materials science master's lead to?

FSU publishes no placement rate or employer list for this master’s, and it has no graduates to report yet. The nearest hard data is national. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the May 2025 median pay of materials engineers at USD 112,860, with 8% job growth expected from 2025 to 2035.

The BLS figures describe the whole US occupation, not FSU graduates, and FSU's zero is a count of degrees, not a job outcome.

The department’s only careers statement is one line saying its advanced degrees prepare students for jobs in industry, research and higher education. It names no employers, and with no master’s graduates on the books in 2024-25 there’s nothing yet to name.

This is a small occupation. BLS counts 23,800 materials engineering jobs in the whole country in 2025, against hundreds of thousands in civil or mechanical engineering. The best-paid corners are the federal government, at a May 2025 median of USD 137,610, and research and development, at USD 132,070. BLS adds that some research and development jobs need a master’s or a PhD, which is where a thesis route earns its keep.

What makes the three-year US work window possible is a classification code, not the course title. Your I-20 will carry 40.1001, Materials Science, and that code sits on the DHS STEM list and on FSU’s own list of STEM majors. File for OPT within 90 days before or 60 days after you finish, then for the 24-month extension through an employer enrolled in E-Verify.

On the H-1B, three facts sit side by side in September 2026. The USD 100,000 payment is aimed at workers entering from abroad, and USCIS exempts a change of status granted inside the US. A federal court has stopped collection since June 2026. And DHS has proposed a separate USD 103,265 fee that, as drafted, would reach graduates switching from OPT too.

How is FSU ranked for materials science?

Treat rankings as background, since none of them decides admission. No major body publishes a materials science table that places FSU. Times Higher Education puts FSU at 201 to 250 in Physical Sciences and 251 to 300 in Engineering for 2026, and QS places the whole university at 549.

Who should pick FSU's MS Materials Science and Engineering, and who shouldn't?

It suits a self-funded engineering or physics graduate who wants research on magnets, superconductors or composites and is comfortable in a tiny, new department. It suits a metallurgy graduate only after a written yes, and it doesn't suit anyone who needs funding or a proven placement record.

VerdictYour backgroundWhy

Needs evidenceThree-year BSc in physics or chemistry, no master'sThe subject is on the list, but FSU hasn't said whether a three-year degree is comparable. The evaluation decides.
Do not shortlistAnyone who needs an assistantship to afford the courseAssistantships are typically reserved for PhD students, and the coursework route has no funding statement at all. About INR 99 lakh would be yours to find.
Do not shortlistApplicant who wants a large cohort and a published placement recordFSU awarded zero master's degrees in this subject in 2024-25 and publishes no employer list, so there's nothing to judge outcomes by yet.

The deciding question is who pays. A self-funded student gets a small department and research access that bigger programmes spread across hundreds of students. A student counting on an assistantship is relying on the one line of the college’s funding page that mentions master’s students at all.

If you want a metallurgy career in Indian steel, automotive or foundry work, think hard before choosing this. The core leans on thermodynamics, characterisation and superconductivity rather than extraction or process metallurgy, and FSU names no employers for the degree, so the link from this course to those jobs is yours to build.

What will you study in FSU's MS Materials Science and Engineering?

Everyone takes four core courses, 12 credits in all, graded B or better. The thesis route adds 12 credits of specialisation courses and 6 credits of thesis research. The coursework route adds 15 credits of specialisation courses plus 3 more credits of courses or directed independent study, per FSU’s 2026-27 bulletin.

  • Every core course needs a B or better, or you retake it or take another core course.
  • Your overall graduate GPA must stay at 3.0 or above.
  • Thesis students defend the thesis orally before their research committee.
  • Coursework students give an oral presentation in the department's seminar series.
  • You enrol in the 0-credit seminar series every Fall and Spring you're in the department.

The programme page names three fundamental core courses and then lists four titles, and the fourth, solid state science, carries no course code. FSU’s bulletin simply says three required core courses plus one elective core. Ask the department which three are required for your year before you register.

The approved specialisation list isn’t published. The programme page refers to a list of acceptable courses without linking one, and the old programme site that carried it now redirects to the department. Several options come from other departments’ timetables. The mechanical engineering schedule for Fall 2026 showed Composite Materials Engineering only as tentative.

Should you shortlist FSU's MS Materials Science and Engineering?

Shortlist it if your bachelor’s is in one of the eight fields the department accepts and you can pay for two years yourself, and only then. The department’s admission page names those fields one by one, and metallurgy and materials engineering aren’t among them. If your degree isn’t on the list, settle that before anything else.

What you get is a very small research department with two major research facilities in the same city. FSU counted 17 graduate students in materials science and engineering in Fall 2025, master's and PhD together, and the department names the high-field magnet lab and the superconductivity centre as its research facilities. What it costs you is predictability. There's no department handbook, the list of approved specialisation courses isn't online, and several core options belong to other departments, such as mechanical engineering, and run on their timetables.

Three things are genuinely hard here. A BTech in metallurgical and materials engineering, the most direct Indian route into this subject, isn't on the department's list of accepted bachelor's degrees, so you need a written yes before you pay anything. There's no track record to judge, because FSU awarded zero master's degrees in this subject in 2024-25. And the money is yours. The college says assistantships are typically kept for PhD students, with only some funding for competitive MS thesis students. If you need a stipend to make the numbers work, or a placement record to show a bank, look at an older department first.

Key takeaways
  • FSU's MS Materials Science and Engineering is 30 credit hours on either route, and 30 credits at the Fall 2027 rate of USD 1,281.77 come to USD 38,453 in tuition.
  • Our two-year total for an Indian student is USD 103,462, about INR 99.05 lakh, including 22 months of living and two years of compulsory FSU health insurance.
  • The department accepts bachelor's degrees in eight named fields, and metallurgical or materials engineering isn't one of them, so get written confirmation first.
  • FSU awarded zero master's degrees in materials science and engineering in 2024-25, and the department only dates from 2023.
  • Apply by 15 January 2027 as an international applicant, or by 15 December 2026 if you want to be considered for funding; the I-20 request closes on 15 May 2027.
  • CIP 40.1001 is on the DHS STEM list, so graduates can apply for 12 months of OPT plus a 24-month STEM extension.

Frequently asked questions

What is the total cost of MS Materials Science and Engineering at FSU for Indian students?

About INR 99.05 lakh, or USD 103,462, for a two-year plan starting Fall 2027. That covers 30 credits at USD 1,281.77, semester fees, 22 months of off-campus living in Tallahassee, books, two years of mandatory FSU health insurance, the application fee, SEVIS and the visa fee. Flights aren't included.

Can I apply to FSU MS Materials Science with a metallurgy BTech?

Possibly, but don't assume it. The department's admission page lists eight accepted bachelor's fields and metallurgical or materials engineering isn't among them, even though FSU's bulletin mentions materials science graduates among past students. Email the department with your transcript and get a written answer before you pay the USD 30 application fee.

Is GRE required for MS Materials Science and Engineering at FSU?

No. FSU's 2026-27 bulletin says MS applicants in materials science and engineering aren't required to take the GRE. The department's own page dates its waiver to Fall 2026, so ask the department to confirm the Fall 2027 position in writing. PhD applicants face a separate GRE minimum.

What is the deadline for Fall 2027 admission to FSU MS Materials Science?

The department asks international applicants living abroad to apply by 15 January 2027. Apply by 15 December 2026 if you want funding considered. The I-20 request closes on 15 May 2027. The 1 July final deadline in the department's table is too late for an Indian student to get a visa in time.

Does FSU give scholarships or assistantships for MS Materials Science students?

Rarely. The college says assistantships are typically reserved for PhD students, with some funding possible for competitive MS thesis students. Tuition waivers go only to graduate assistants and fellows, and they don't cover fees or insurance. The coursework-only route carries no funding statement, so plan to pay the full amount yourself.

Is MS Materials Science and Engineering at FSU STEM designated for OPT?

Yes. The programme's CIP code, 40.1001 Materials Science, appears on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List dated 22 July 2024 and on FSU's own list of STEM majors. Graduates can apply for 12 months of OPT and then a 24-month STEM OPT extension if they meet the conditions.

Does FSU accept a 3-year BSc for MS Materials Science and Engineering?

FSU hasn't published a rule. It asks for a bachelor's comparable to a US degree with a 3.0 upper-division GPA, and a NACES course-by-course evaluation decides comparability. A four-year BE or BTech is the safe case. With a three-year BSc, get the evaluation first and ask the department before applying.
