What is the FSU MS in Geographic Information Science?

It’s a 30-credit, one-year Master of Science from FSU’s Department of Geography in Tallahassee, built for GIS, remote sensing and spatial analysis jobs rather than research. You’d pay USD 38,453.10 in tuition, for 30 credits at FSU’s Fall 2027 out-of-state rate. With 13 months of living, books, insurance and visa fees, the full plan is about INR 73.75 lakh.

The year runs Fall, Spring, then Summer. Introductory Remote Sensing runs only in Fall, Advanced GIScience only in Spring, and the six-credit GIScience Capstone only in Summer, built around an internship you find yourself. This page is written for the Fall 2027 intake. FSU hasn’t yet published its Fall 2027 figure for I-20 funds or the 2027/28 insurance premium, so those two lines use the 2026 numbers.

How much does the FSU MS in GIS cost for the full year?

About INR 73.75 lakh, or USD 77,040, for the full 13 months. That’s far above the USD 49,944 on FSU’s own I-20 table, which counts 12 months, 18 credits and last year’s tuition rate. Tuition is billed per credit hour at the out-of-state rate FSU’s Board of Trustees approved for Fall 2027.

US law sets a USD 250 visa integrity fee at visa issue, but its collection wasn't confirmed on 24 September 2026, so it's left out of the total. The I-20 funds you show, about INR 47.81 lakh on the 2026 table, prove you can pay and stay your money. Converted at INR 95.7310 per USD, the FBIL reference rate for 23 September 2026 shown by the RBI, with rupees rounded to the nearest thousand.

The tuition line is 30 x USD 1,281.77. FSU’s 2026-27 graduate out-of-state rate is USD 1,278.04, and the fee increase approved on 28 August 2026 applies from Fall 2027, Spring 2028 and Summer 2028, which is exactly this cohort’s three terms. The Center for Global Engagement tells students to allow for rises of up to 15% a year.

Thirty credits assumes you use one elective slot for a 1-credit directed study, graded satisfactory or unsatisfactory, with the coordinator’s approval. The degree checklist also allows a fifth 3-credit elective instead. That makes 32 credits and adds USD 2,563.54, about INR 2.45 lakh.

Living uses FSU’s own 2026-27 off-campus graduate budget of USD 22,906 for nine months, spread at USD 2,545 a month across all 13 months from August 2027 to August 2028. The summer capstone term runs from 15 May to 4 August 2028, so rent doesn’t stop after Spring.

Health insurance isn’t optional. From 2026-27, every F-1 student is enrolled in the FSU plan automatically and can’t waive it with an Indian or cheaper US policy. One annual premium covers the programme because it ends before 14 August 2028. No scholarship, assistantship or waiver is published for MSGIS students, so no funding row appears here.

Can an Indian graduate meet FSU's MS in GIS entry rules?

Yes, if your degree is judged comparable to a US bachelor’s and your upper-division GPA comes out at 3.0 or higher on a course-by-course evaluation. The GRE isn’t needed for MSGIS, no GIS course is a published prerequisite, and IELTS 6.5 is the Graduate School’s English minimum. The evaluation, not your marksheet, decides the first two.

RequirementPublished ruleWhat you do

The department’s general admissions page still says the GRE waiver runs through Fall 2026, while the MSGIS admissions page, updated in July 2026, says the GRE is waived for all MSGIS applicants with no end date. The programme’s own page is the one that applies.

An older department bulletin lists a higher English bar of TOEFL iBT 100 and a SPEAK score, wording that matches teaching-assistant screening. The current MSGIS page links only to the Graduate School minimums. A score comfortably above IELTS 6.5 removes the question.

Unofficial transcripts are enough for the department to review your file. Official ones, through the evaluator, must reach FSU before classes start, and a transcript that doesn’t show the degree and its award date needs a separate degree certificate.

Seven rules that reject or stall Indian files

  1. Get the evaluation before you count on a three-year degree

FSU asks for a degree that’s comparable to a US bachelor’s and doesn’t say whether a three-year BSc, BCom or BA qualifies. Neither the Graduate School nor the geography department publishes a rule either way, so the course-by-course evaluation decides it. A four-year BE or BTech is the safe case. A three-year degree followed by a completed Indian master’s fits FSU’s second route, a comparable graduate degree. With a three-year degree alone, order the evaluation first and apply only once it calls the degree equivalent.

  2. Your 3.0 is an upper-division GPA, not your CGPA

FSU publishes no percentage-to-GPA table for Indian marks. The Graduate School counts only later coursework.
“The Upper-division undergraduate GPA includes the entire term in which you attempted your 60th credit hour and continues until completion of the baccalaureate degree.”FSU Graduate School
The evaluator calculates this figure, which is why FSU points applicants to The Evaluation Company. A weak first two years matters less than a weak final two, and a 3.0 still only makes you eligible, not admitted.
  3. No GIS course is required to apply, but every core course needs a B

The programme publishes no prerequisite course, and the introductory GIS and remote sensing courses are part of the 30 credits. The catch comes after admission. The four required courses must be passed with a B or higher, and the capstone can’t start until you’ve passed GIS 5034, GIS 5101 and GIS 5106 and completed 20 credits. An older bulletin says B minus. Plan for B. If you’ve never opened ArcGIS or written a line of Python, take a free course before August so the first Fall term isn’t also your first contact with the software.

  4. An English-medium Indian degree doesn't exempt you

India isn’t on FSU’s exempt-country list, and the Graduate School’s own answer is narrow.
“The TOEFL may only be waived as a test requirement if the student has received a bachelor’s or master’s degree from a U.S. institution.”FSU Graduate School
TOEFL changed its scale on 21 January 2026, so a new-format score must be 4.0, not 80. Duolingo isn’t on the Graduate School’s list, so confirm it with the department before you book it.
  5. Apply by 15 January, not by the 1 July final date

Three dates apply to Fall 2027. The Graduate School has a 15 January priority date for international applicants. The department encourages international applicants to apply by 1 May 2027 and starts rolling review in late April. The final date is 1 July 2027, seven weeks before Fall classes begin on 23 August, which leaves too little time for an I-20, the SEVIS fee and a visa interview. Submit by 15 January and you satisfy both offices. Once admitted, send the department’s Enrollment Intent Form within two weeks or you risk the seat.

  6. Show I-20 funds for year one, then budget for 13 months

FSU’s I-20 figure of USD 49,944 is labelled for 2026 admits and uses last year’s tuition rate. It covers 12 months at 18 credits. This programme bills 30 credits and runs 13 months, so the real cost is closer to USD 77,040. Parents who arrange exactly the I-20 amount will fall short in Spring. FSU also says a student who shows family funds must stay on family funds for the period covered.

  7. Plan the capstone as a research project, not an off-campus internship

The capstone syllabus asks for at least 150 internship hours in Summer and says students find placements themselves. For an F-1 student, off-campus work needs Curricular Practical Training, and FSU’s international office changed its rule in August 2026.
“If there is a degree requirement that can be satisfied through coursework rather than training that requires CPT, international students in F-1 status must choose the coursework option.”FSU Center for Global Engagement
Because this capstone also allows an independent research project, expect to do the project, or an on-campus FSU placement that needs no CPT. Confirm with the coordinator and your international advisor in your first semester.

How do you apply to FSU's MS in GIS for Fall 2027?

There are four hand-overs, and two sit outside FSU. You apply to the Graduate School, which sends the file to the Department of Geography. Your evaluator and your test agency each send results direct. The plan works back from the 15 January 2027 international priority date so an offer leaves room for the I-20 and visa.

The FSU Graduate School online application for the MS in Geographic Information Science, with unofficial transcripts, a CV, a statement of purpose, three recommendation letters, an English score sent by the agency and a NACES course-by-course evaluation sent by the evaluator.

Start byTaskTakesWhy this date
03 Nov 2026Order the course-by-course evaluation45 daysYour university must send transcripts to the evaluator. Allowance is our estimate, not an FSU figure.
09 Nov 2026Take IELTS, TOEFL or PTE60 daysLeaves time for one retake and for the agency to send the score to FSU.
09 Dec 2026Confirm three referees30 daysAt least one must be a faculty member who taught you.
18 Dec 2026Write the statement of purpose21 days1 to 1.5 pages naming your GIS, remote sensing, statistics and programming work.
08 Jan 2027Submit and pay USD 307 daysThe fee can't be waived. Upload unofficial transcripts so review can start.

The allowances are Nbyula planning estimates, not processing times published by Florida State University.

In sequence, the English test agency and the evaluator send their results to FSU, the Graduate School checks the file and the Department of Geography decides. An admitted student returns the Enrollment Intent Form within two weeks, then the Center for Global Engagement issues the I-20 once funds are proved. The SEVIS fee and the US visa interview come last.

Start in Fall, not Spring. A January starter misses the year’s only remote sensing section and waits a full year for the advanced course, and the capstone needs both passed. A Spring 2027 start, which closes on 1 October 2026, can’t reach the capstone before Summer 2028, so the degree runs about 20 months, from January 2027 to August 2028, with rent for every one of them.

Admission is for one term only. If a visa delay makes you miss August 2027, FSU says you must apply again for a later term rather than defer.

Why 15 January and not 1 May

The department’s 1 May 2027 date is when it encourages international applicants to be in, and its rolling review starts about then. The Graduate School’s 15 January priority date is earlier and also applies to you. Meeting the earlier one costs nothing and keeps a late-April or May decision from colliding with visa appointment queues.

What jobs and work rights follow the FSU MS in GIS?

FSU names employers but publishes no placement rate or salary for MSGIS graduates. BLS expects cartographer jobs to grow 7% by 2035, but the field is small. The degree’s STEM code, 45.0702 is its strongest asset for an Indian graduate, since it allows up to 36 months of OPT work in the US.

Pay and growth figures are national BLS data for the occupation, not results for FSU graduates. The employer list is FSU's own, with no year or headcount attached.

FSU’s named employers lean federal. Four of the seven, EPA, NGA, the Census Bureau and USGS, are federal agencies, and OPM says you must in general be a US citizen or national to work for the federal government. For an Indian graduate on OPT, the realistic targets are private GIS and software firms, engineering and environmental consultancies, and some state and local bodies.

The occupation is small. BLS counts 14,700 cartographer and photogrammetrist jobs in the US in 2025, with a median of USD 81,390, and 1,500 geographers, a group it expects to shrink 2% by 2035. GIS analyst work also sits inside planning, environmental and data roles that BLS files under other titles, so treat these as a floor on demand, not the whole of it.

The H-1B route after OPT has moved. USCIS says the USD 100,000 payment under the September 2025 proclamation doesn’t apply when an employer files a change of status for someone already in the US and it’s granted, and a court order has blocked collection since June 2026. The proclamation was renewed on 18 September 2026 and DHS says it still plans to collect if the order is lifted.

Under the DHS rule published in July 2026, F-1 students are admitted for a fixed period tied to the I-20 end date, with a 30-day grace period after the programme instead of 60. Finish on time, or apply for OPT before the grace period ends.

Where does FSU rank for an MS in GIS?

Neither QS nor Times Higher Education publishes a geography or GIS position for FSU that we could confirm, so the two rows below are university-wide. A ranking is context for your family, not an admission rule, and neither table measures this one-year professional degree.

Who should apply to FSU's MS in GIS, and who shouldn't?

The strongest fit is a four-year engineering, science or geography graduate who wants hands-on GIS and remote sensing in one year and can pay the whole cost. It’s a poor fit for anyone who needs to earn during the course or wants a US federal job afterwards, given the self-funded position.

VerdictYour backgroundWhy
Strong fitBE or BTech in civil, environmental or computer science, 3.0 upper-division GPAThe degree is the safe case for comparability, and GIS programming, databases and spatial statistics electives build on it.
Strong fitBSc or MSc in geography, geology or environmental science with some ArcGIS or QGIS useThe field fits the department's rule directly, and the statement of purpose has real GIS work to describe.
Needs evidenceThree-year BSc, BCom or BA graduate with no Indian master'sFSU publishes no rule on three-year degrees, so the evaluation has to call it comparable before you spend on the application.
Needs evidenceApplicant who can only start in January 2027Term-locked core courses stretch a Spring start to about 20 months, seven more months of rent than a Fall start.
Do not shortlistApplicant who needs an assistantship or paid internship to afford itMSGIS students pay their own way, and the August 2026 CPT rule points F-1 students to the research-project capstone.
Do not shortlistApplicant aiming at NGA, USGS or other US federal GIS jobsFederal hiring is for US citizens in general, and most employers FSU names are federal.

If funding is the deciding factor, look at the Master’s in Geography in the same department. FSU advertises up to USD 19,650 a year plus a nine-credit tuition waiver there, for students with a GPA well above 3.0, while it says MSGIS students are self-funded. The trade is a two-year research degree instead of a one-year applied one.

The cohort is small. FSU’s Fact Book counts eight MSGIS degrees awarded in 2024-25, so expect small classes and a coordinator who knows each student, but also a thin alumni network to lean on for jobs.

What will you study in FSU's MS in GIS?

Seventeen credits are fixed and the other 13 are electives, all taken at graduate level. The fixed four run in set terms, so the order is Fall, Spring, then Summer, and electives rotate, so not every one runs in your year. That rigidity is why a Fall start matters.

  • Required courses total 17 credit hours and each needs a B or higher
  • Electives total at least 13 credit hours, letter-graded ones at B minus or higher
  • Four 3-credit electives plus a 1-credit directed study make 30 credits, while a fifth elective instead makes 32
  • Usually only one course from outside the department counts, and only with the coordinator's signed approval
  • The capstone needs GIS 5034, GIS 5101 and GIS 5106 passed and 20 credits completed
  • The degree must be finished within seven years of starting

If you took GIS or remote sensing courses equivalent to FSU’s GIS 4043 or GIS 4035 as an undergraduate, the coordinator can let you replace the introductory courses with graduate electives. You still need 30 graduate credits, and each swap cuts the directed study hours you’re allowed.

The capstone class meets on Mondays in Tallahassee through the summer, with two progress reports and a final report of at least 3,000 words. FSU’s page lists GIS Programming as GIS 5103 in one list and GIS 5013 in another, so check the number when you register.

Should an Indian student shortlist FSU's MS in GIS?

Shortlist it if you can start in Fall 2027, fund about INR 73.75 lakh yourself, and are fine finishing with a research project instead of a paid US internship. The department says MSGIS students pay their own way and promises no departmental funding. That one fact decides most Indian files before admission does.

What you get is speed and a STEM label. Twelve months of fees and rent is cheaper than a two-year US master's, and CIP code 45.0702 sits on the DHS STEM list, so the degree can lead to 36 months of OPT in all. What you give up is slack. Miss the Fall-only remote sensing course or fall below a B in a core course and the 12-month plan slips by a term, with rent running every month.

Two things are genuinely hard here. The capstone assumes an internship you arrange on your own, but since August 2026 FSU's international office approves off-campus internships only when every student in the degree must do one, and this capstone has a research-project option, so plan on the project. And most employers FSU names for its graduates are federal agencies such as NGA, USGS and the Census Bureau, where hiring is for US citizens in general. If your plan depends on a federal GIS job or on earning during the course, choose a different programme.

Key takeaways
  • FSU's MS in Geographic Information Science is 30 credit hours over Fall, Spring and Summer, and costs about INR 73.75 lakh (USD 77,040) for Fall 2027 entry.
  • Tuition is USD 1,281.77 per credit hour for Fall 2027 entrants, and the department says MSGIS students are self-funded.
  • Entry needs a comparable bachelor's with a 3.0 upper-division GPA, IELTS 6.5 or equivalent, three letters and no GRE.
  • Apply by the 15 January 2027 international priority date, even though the department's final date is 1 July 2027.
  • The 6-credit summer capstone asks for 150 internship hours, and FSU's August 2026 CPT rule steers F-1 students to its research-project option.
  • CIP code 45.0702 is on the DHS STEM list, so graduates can hold up to 36 months of OPT.

Frequently asked questions

What is the total cost of the MS in GIS at Florida State University for Indian students?

About INR 73.75 lakh, or USD 77,040.10, for Fall 2027 entry. That covers 30 credits of tuition at USD 1,281.77, flat fees, books, 13 months of living at FSU's own budget, one year of compulsory FSU health insurance, and the application, SEVIS and visa fees. The exchange rate used is INR 95.7310 per USD from 23 September 2026.

Is the GRE required for the FSU MS in Geographic Information Science?

No. FSU's department page says GRE scores are waived by the University for all MSGIS applicants, with no end date. An older department page still says the waiver runs through Fall 2026, but the programme's own admissions page was updated in July 2026. Put the effort into your English score and statement of purpose instead.

Does FSU accept a three-year Indian bachelor's degree for the MS in GIS?

FSU hasn't published a rule either way. It asks for a degree comparable to a US bachelor's with a 3.0 upper-division GPA, and a course-by-course evaluation from a NACES member decides comparability. A four-year BE or BTech is the safe case. With a three-year degree, get the evaluation before you pay the USD 30 application fee.

What is the last date to apply for FSU MS GIS Fall 2027?

The final date is 1 July 2027, but that's too late for a visa. The department asks international applicants to apply by 1 May 2027, and the Graduate School's international priority date is 15 January 2027. Apply by 15 January. The Spring 2027 intake closes on 1 October 2026 but can't finish in 12 months.

Can I get a scholarship or assistantship in the FSU MS in GIS?

Don't plan on one. FSU's geography department says MSGIS students are self-funded for all or most of the programme and that departmental funding isn't guaranteed. University fellowships go mainly to doctoral students. The Master's in Geography in the same department advertises USD 19,650 a year plus a tuition waiver, but it's a different, two-year degree.

Is the FSU MS in Geographic Information Science STEM for OPT?

Yes. FSU lists the master's under CIP code 45.0702, and that code, Geographic Information Science and Cartography, is on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List dated 22 July 2024. You can apply for 12 months of OPT and then a 24-month STEM extension, provided your employer meets the STEM OPT rules.

Do FSU MS GIS students have to find their own internship?

The capstone asks for 150 internship hours in Summer, and FSU says it doesn't place students. For Indian students on F-1, FSU's international office stopped approving off-campus internships that a degree doesn't require of everyone in August 2026. The capstone also allows an independent research project, so plan on that or an on-campus placement.

What IELTS score do I need for the FSU MS in GIS?

IELTS Academic 6.5 is FSU's graduate minimum, and the MSGIS page names no higher bar. PTE 55 or TOEFL iBT 80 also work, and a TOEFL taken from 21 January 2026 needs 4.0 on the new scale. An English-medium Indian degree doesn't exempt you, and applications below the minimum are cancelled.
