What is the FSU MS Industrial Engineering?

It’s a 30-credit Master of Science from FSU’s Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering department, which sits inside the engineering college FSU shares with Florida A&M. At the Fall 2027 rate of USD 1,281.77 a credit hour, the credits alone cost USD 38,453.10, and the whole plan over four semesters and 22 months in Tallahassee comes to about INR 99.05 lakh.

The MSIE comes in two routes, a thesis degree and Engineering Management. The standard MSIE is a research degree with a 6-credit thesis in manufacturing systems or quality engineering. The Engineering Management specialisation is 30 credits of coursework, 18 of them in engineering management, data analysis and economics, with a business school course on top. This page is written for the Fall 2027 intake. The department still hasn’t said whether its GRE waiver, dated to Fall 2026, carries over, and FSU hasn’t published its Fall 2027 I-20 funds figure yet.

How much does the FSU MS Industrial Engineering cost in rupees?

Plan for INR 99.05 lakh, or USD 103,462.10, from arrival in August 2027 to graduation in May 2029. The idea that a US public university master’s costs one year’s tuition is wrong here, because 30 credits at USD 1,281.77 take four semesters when summer has no in-person courses.

A 2025 law sets a USD 250 visa integrity fee payable when the visa is issued, but on 24 September 2026 we couldn't confirm it's being collected, so it isn't in the total. FSU's I-20 table for 2026 admits asks for USD 49,944 (about INR 47.81 lakh) of first-year funds; that's proof you can pay, and the money stays yours. Converted at INR 95.7310 per USD, the FBIL reference rate for 23 September 2026 on the RBI site. Flights and the USD 250 visa integrity fee are left out.

Living is FSU’s own off-campus figure for graduate students, USD 22,906 for the nine-month Fall and Spring year, spread at USD 2,545 a month across all 22 months. Summer 2028 is in there because you’ll still pay rent in Tallahassee while the department runs its summer courses online only.

Health insurance is the university plan, and from 2026-27 an F-1 student is enrolled in it automatically and can’t waive it for a cheaper Indian policy. Two policy years cover a stay that starts in August 2027 and ends in May 2029.

Older figures for this degree are still in circulation. At the 2025-26 rate of USD 1,173.86 a credit, 30 credits came to USD 35,215.80. The 2026-27 rate of USD 1,278.04 and the Fall 2027 rate of USD 1,281.77 push the same 30 credits to USD 38,453.10, about INR 3.10 lakh more than a total built on the old rate.

No separate fee for the engineering college or for international students shows up in FSU’s fee tables. The per-credit rate itself is set for 2027-28 only. FSU’s trustees approved small local fee rises again for 2028-29, so the second-year credits may cost slightly more than the table shows.

The college’s funding page describes assistantships and tuition waivers for PhD students. It says nothing similar for master’s students, and the department’s 2021 handbook only notes that a department-funded MS student has to keep a 3.4 GPA. The safe assumption is that the whole INR 99.05 lakh comes from your family or a loan, with any research assistantship a professor offers later as a bonus.

Can an Indian engineering graduate meet the FSU MS Industrial Engineering entry rules?

Yes, if the degree is comparable to a US bachelor’s with a 3.0 upper-division GPA and the transcript covers statistics, advanced calculus or linear algebra, operations research and a programming course. An industrial or production engineering BTech clears the department’s subject check most easily. Other branches get prerequisite courses added to the offer.

FSU reads a GPA only from upper-division work, counted from the term in which you attempted your 60th credit. For a four-year BTech that’s roughly the last two and a half years. Your evaluator converts your percentage or CGPA to the 4.0 scale, so use their figure rather than an online converter.

The two subject lists differ in a way that matters. The thesis route names industrial engineering, science or mathematics, so an Indian mechanical or electrical graduate is judged case by case. Engineering Management names engineering outright, alongside computer science, mathematics and physics, which is why most non-IE engineers fit it more cleanly. Letters count for more than usual, because FSU asks for three signed letters on letterhead that speak to research potential, not just good conduct.

The college is shared by Florida A&M and FSU, and you apply through only one of them. The courses are the same, but the diploma, the fee rate and some rules differ. FAMU lists Duolingo 120 and a GRE requirement with a waiver form, while FSU lists Duolingo 125. This page covers the FSU route.

The credential evaluation is where most Indian files stall. FSU won’t review an application from a non-US graduate until the course-by-course report arrives, and it won’t accept unofficial transcripts from Indian universities. FSU applicants see a link to order it from The Evaluation Company, formerly SpanTran, on their application status page, and any other NACES member’s report is also accepted.

India isn’t on FSU’s list of countries exempt from the English test, so plan on sitting one even if your degree was taught in English. The department accepts the new TOEFL scale at 4.0, while its bulletin still quotes the older 80, so a 2027 test taker should report the new-scale score.

Six rules that reject or delay Indian industrial engineering files

  1. Choose Engineering Management if you don't want a thesis

Many applicants assume the MSIE has a course-only option they can simply tick. The programme page says otherwise.
“Under exceptional circumstances, students may be allowed administratively to complete an MSIE non-theses option.”FAMU-FSU IME, MSIE requirements
So the ordinary route is the thesis, with a supervisor, a committee and an in-person defence. If you want coursework only, apply to the Engineering Management specialisation from the start. It’s listed as a separate admission track with its own requirements, even though the FSU bulletin treats it as part of the same MSIE degree.
  2. Don't count on the GRE waiver for Fall 2027

The programme page banner says the GRE is waived with no end date. The admissions page for the same degree adds a limit.
“The GRE requirement has been waived (and extended) for all engineering master’s applicants through Fall 2026.”FAMU-FSU IME, graduate admissions
FSU’s 2026-27 bulletin still lists minimums of 155 quant and 146 verbal for the thesis MSIE, and 151 and 146 for Engineering Management. The university itself no longer requires the GRE for master’s, but it lets a department set one. Email the department and keep the reply before you drop the test from your plan.
  3. A mechanical or civil BTech owes prerequisites unless the transcript proves them

Without an industrial engineering bachelor’s, the department expects statistics, Calculus III or applied linear algebra, one operations research course and a programming class. It reads your transcript to decide, and it admits it can get this wrong.
“Because transcripts and records often do not clearly indicate course content, some prerequisite course assignments may be inappropriate.”FAMU-FSU IME, prerequisite work
Carry syllabus copies to ask for a waiver. Any prerequisite you’re assigned is graded, needs a B average with nothing below C, and blocks your degree plan until it’s cleared, which can push you into a fifth semester.
  4. Provisional admission won't carry a prerequisite gap onto an I-20

The department says any MSIE applicant can be admitted provisionally while prerequisites are pending. FSU’s Graduate School bulletin is blunt about international students.
“International students cannot be admitted into the provisional category.”FSU Graduate Bulletin, admissions
FSU doesn’t reconcile the two. For an Indian applicant needing a visa, read it as a full admission with prerequisite courses listed in the letter, not a conditional one.
  5. A three-year degree needs the evaluation before the application fee

Neither the department nor the Graduate School says whether a three-year Indian bachelor’s is comparable to a US degree. FSU asks for a course-by-course evaluation from a NACES member and lets that report decide. A four-year BE or BTech is the safe case. With a BSc, get the evaluation first, and note that the thesis track wants a science or mathematics degree while Engineering Management names physics, mathematics and computer science.

  6. Treat 15 January as your deadline, not 1 July

The masters table shows a final Fall deadline of 1 July, the same as FSU’s university-wide date. That date only works for someone already in the US. For applicants abroad the department sets its own cut-off.
“May 15 is the deadline for international students living outside the United States to apply for an I-20 for the fall semester.”FAMU-FSU IME, application deadlines
The same page encourages international applicants to apply by 15 January, which is also the Graduate School’s priority date. Aim there, and treat 15 May as the last day your I-20 paperwork can start.

How do you apply to the FSU MS Industrial Engineering for Fall 2027?

There are five hand-overs. Your university, the NACES evaluator and the test board sit outside FSU, then the department decides and FSU’s international office issues the I-20. Work backwards from 15 January 2027, the date the department asks applicants abroad to meet.

You apply on FSU's graduate portal, your university and the NACES evaluator send the transcripts and the course-by-course report, the test board sends scores, the department's graduate committee decides, and FSU's Center for Global Engagement issues the I-20 once your funds are proven.

The allowances are Nbyula planning estimates, not processing times published by Florida State University.

The department’s graduate committee has the last word. Its page says decisions on admission are final, and it assigns prerequisite courses in the admission letter, so the letter is where your real course load appears.

After admission, the I-20 needs proof of funds dated within six months, in English, and a bank letter on letterhead signed by a manager. The funds figure itself is covered under costs above. If your family’s money gets you the I-20, CGE expects you to stay on family funding for the period that proof covered.

Spring entry exists, with a 1 November final date, but core courses run once a year. Applied Optimization and Engineering Experiments are Spring courses and Modeling and Analysis of Manufacturing and Industrial Systems is a Fall course, so a January start can leave a thin first term unless the department sets out a spring course plan.

There is no summer start

The masters deadline table has no summer row, and the programme page tells international students to begin in Fall or Spring because the department teaches only online graduate courses in summer. Your first semester must carry 9 credits, 6 of them in person, so a late admission can’t be rescued by a summer start.

What jobs and work rights follow the FSU MS Industrial Engineering?

FSU publishes no placement rate, salary or employer list for this degree. Its CIP code, 14.3501, is on the US STEM list, so a graduate can work up to 36 months on OPT and the STEM extension, and the wider job market for industrial engineers is growing.

Only the FSU rows describe this degree. The BLS rows describe US industrial engineers as an occupation, whatever their university.

Industrial engineering pay in the US varies by sector. BLS puts the 2025 median at USD 107,610 in professional, scientific and technical services, USD 105,370 in computer and electronic product manufacturing, and USD 102,390 in transportation equipment manufacturing. Those are medians for experienced and new engineers together, not starting salaries.

The MSIE requirements page carries FSU’s curricular practical training wording for programmes that recommend training to all their students. That’s the route by which an F-1 student can take a paid internship during the degree, through a training course and CGE’s approval. The page doesn’t say how many MSIE students use it.

The Engineering Management route doesn’t make you a manager on day one. BLS says architectural and engineering managers need five years or more of related work before the role, with a 2025 median of USD 171,270. The specialisation prepares you for that path; it isn’t a shortcut to it.

The department’s graduate headcount fell from 131 in Fall 2023 to 101 in Fall 2025, across its master’s and PhD programmes together. That’s a small community, and the published course lists show each concentration course running in only one term a year.

The USD 100,000 H-1B payment covers petitions for people abroad, not a granted change of status from OPT inside the US, and a court order has paused it since June 2026. A separate DHS proposal of August 2026 would charge USD 103,265 on every cap-subject petition, including in-US cases, if it becomes final. Both are live questions for anyone graduating in 2029.

Where does Florida State University rank?

Ranking is background, not an entry rule, and none of these tables looks at industrial engineering. We couldn’t read a subject or engineering-school ranking for FSU on a ranking body’s own site, so the rows below are the whole university’s overall positions in the 2026 editions of three tables.

Who should apply to the FSU MS Industrial Engineering, and who shouldn't?

It suits an industrial, production or mechanical engineer who wants research in manufacturing or quality, or a management-leaning engineer happy with 30 credits of coursework, and who can fund about INR 99 lakh. It doesn't suit anyone chasing a one-year course-only degree or counting on a stipend.

VerdictYour backgroundWhy
Strong fitIndustrial or production engineering BTech with a strong CGPA, keen on a thesisNo prerequisites to clear, and the thesis concentrations match what the degree already covered.
Strong fitMechanical BTech with 2 years in plant, quality or supply chain rolesThe management core in data analysis, economics and project design builds on that work, with no thesis.
Needs evidenceMechanical, civil or electrical BTech without an operations research courseAdmissible, but expect assigned prerequisites that cost fees and may add a semester.
Needs evidenceThree-year BSc in mathematics or physicsThe subject fits the published lists, but comparability rests on the evaluation, which you need before applying.
Do not shortlistGraduate who wants a 12-month course-only master's to reach OPT fastNon-thesis MSIE is by exception, and with no in-person summer courses 30 credits take four semesters.
Do not shortlistCommerce or BBA graduate aiming at managementBoth tracks ask for an engineering, science or maths bachelor's, and the prerequisite list assumes calculus and operations research.

The thesis route is the better bet if you might want a PhD later, because its core courses also count toward the department’s PhD core. The management route is the better bet if you plan to work straight after, since it leaves room for supply chain, marketing or finance electives from the business college.

The middle rows are where most Indian applicants land. A mechanical or electrical graduate without operations research pays for each assigned prerequisite at the full credit rate, and a three-year BSc graduate pays the USD 30 fee and the evaluation cost before learning whether the degree counts as comparable. Neither case is a rejection, but both change the cost and the timeline before the first semester starts.

If what you really want is a coursework systems degree with evening classes, FSU’s MS Systems Engineering in the same department is the closer match. The application asks you to name your route, so the choice comes before you apply.

What do you study in the FSU MS Industrial Engineering?

Both routes total 30 credit hours. The thesis route is 9 core credits, 9 in a concentration, 6 of electives and 6 of thesis. Engineering Management is 18 core credits, 3 of business, and 9 of electives with at least 3 from engineering, per the 2026-27 bulletin.

  • Keep an overall 3.0 GPA to graduate; you may repeat two courses once, or one course twice
  • Declare thesis or non-thesis by the end of the first semester, and file a degree plan by the end of the second
  • At most 6 credits taken before admission count toward the degree

Thesis concentration courses include Statistical Process Control, Reliability Engineering, System Modeling and Simulation, Optimization on Networks and Engineering Time Series Analysis on the quality side, and Computer-Aided Manufacturing, Concurrent Engineering and Composite Materials Engineering on the manufacturing side. Each runs in only one term a year.

A thesis student picks a major professor and a supervisory committee by the end of the second semester, presents a proposal at least one semester before the last, and defends in person. The department allows at most one committee member to join by two-way video, and audio-only links aren’t accepted. Master’s work must finish within seven years of first registering.

The department’s Engineering Management page lists four elective courses, 12 credits, under a 30-credit heading, which adds to 33. The bulletin’s 9 elective credits are the ones that make 30, so settle your course list with the Director of Graduate Studies in the first semester. Some business options run only in the evening, and online MBA classes aren’t open to MSIE students.

Should you shortlist the FSU MS Industrial Engineering?

Shortlist it if your transcript shows statistics, calculus and operations research and you’ll either write a thesis or take the Engineering Management route, and only then. The department decides the file on four prerequisite subjects, and a missing one becomes an extra course you pay for.

What you get is a small department with its own labs, a named research track in manufacturing or quality, and a STEM code that opens three years of OPT. What you give up is the one-year course-only master's many Indian engineers expect. The thesis route needs a supervisor and a committee by the end of your second semester, and the defence is held in person.

Two things are genuinely hard here. Money comes first, because INR 99 lakh with no published master's assistantship is a big bet on a degree FSU awarded to 33 master's students in 2024-25. And timing is the second, because the department runs no in-person graduate courses in summer, so you can't squeeze 30 credits into a year and each extra semester adds living costs. If you want a course-only degree in twelve months, this isn't it.

Key takeaways
  • The FSU MS Industrial Engineering is 30 credit hours, taken as a thesis MSIE or as the course-only Engineering Management specialisation.
  • At USD 1,281.77 a credit for Fall 2027, the 22-month plan totals about INR 99.05 lakh (USD 103,462) with living and insurance.
  • Non-IE graduates owe up to four prerequisite subjects, graded at a B average, before a degree plan can be filed.
  • The department's written GRE waiver runs through Fall 2026, while the 2026-27 bulletin still lists 155 quant and 146 verbal.
  • Applicants abroad should apply by 15 January 2027; the department's I-20 cut-off for Fall is 15 May 2027.
  • CIP 14.3501 is on the DHS STEM list, giving up to 36 months of OPT, but FSU publishes no placement data for the degree.

Frequently asked questions

What is the total cost of MS Industrial Engineering at FSU for Indian students?

About INR 99.05 lakh, or USD 103,462, for the full programme starting Fall 2027. That covers 30 credit hours at USD 1,281.77 each, 22 months of living in Tallahassee at FSU's estimate, books, two years of compulsory FSU health insurance, the application fee, SEVIS and the visa fee, converted at INR 95.7310 per USD.

Is GRE required for FSU MS Industrial Engineering in Fall 2027?

It isn't settled. The department's written waiver covers applicants through Fall 2026, and FSU's 2026-27 bulletin still lists minimums of 155 quant and 146 verbal for the thesis route and 151 and 146 for Engineering Management. FSU has no university-wide GRE rule for master's, so email the department before skipping the test.

Can I do FSU MS Industrial Engineering without a thesis?

Only in two ways. The standard MSIE allows a non-thesis option only under exceptional circumstances, approved administratively. The practical course-only route is the Engineering Management specialisation, which is 30 credits of coursework with no thesis. Choose it when you apply, because it has its own admission requirements and deadline row.

Can a mechanical engineering BTech apply for MS Industrial Engineering at FSU?

Yes. Without an industrial engineering degree you'll be checked for statistics, Calculus III or linear algebra, operations research and a programming course. Anything missing is assigned as a prerequisite in the offer letter, needs a B average with no grade below C, and must be cleared before you can file a degree plan.

What GPA do Indian students need for FSU industrial engineering?

FSU asks for a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, counted only on upper-division work from the term of your 60th credit to graduation. A NACES credential evaluator converts your Indian percentage or CGPA, and FSU recommends one that calculates the upper-division GPA. Use their figure rather than an online converter when judging your chances.

What is the FSU MS Industrial Engineering deadline for Fall 2027?

Apply by 15 January 2027. The department encourages international applicants abroad to meet that date, and it's also FSU's international priority date. The department's I-20 deadline for applicants outside the US is 15 May 2027. The 1 July final date suits only applicants already in the US.

Is FSU MS Industrial Engineering STEM designated?

Yes. FSU codes both the Industrial Engineering and the Engineering Management master's majors as CIP 14.3501, which is on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List dated 22 July 2024. That makes a graduate eligible for 12 months of OPT plus the 24-month STEM extension, subject to the usual employer conditions.

Does FSU give assistantships for MS Industrial Engineering?

None are published for master's students. The engineering college describes assistantship and waiver packages for PhD students only, and FSU's Graduate School calls funds very limited. The department's 2021 handbook mentions department-funded MS students, but gives no numbers. Budget the full cost as self-funded and treat any offer as a bonus.
