What is the MS in Mathematics at Florida State University?
FSU’s Master of Science in Mathematics is a two-year, four-semester degree in Tallahassee with four majors, and you apply to one. Financial Mathematics, the quant and actuarial major, needs 35 credit hours and the others 36. At FSU’s Fall 2027 rate of USD 1,281.77 per credit hour, a Financial Mathematics student’s full cost comes to about INR 102.74 lakh.
The four majors are Financial Mathematics, Applied and Computational Mathematics, Pure Mathematics and Biomathematics. All of them are coursework degrees, and Pure and Applied also allow a thesis. This page is written for the Fall 2027 intake, the only start FSU offers. The department’s dates for it are published, but FSU hasn’t yet released its 2027 I-20 funding table or its 2027-28 insurance premium.
How much does the FSU MS in Mathematics cost an Indian student?
The full Financial Mathematics degree costs about INR 102.74 lakh (USD 107,325.95) over 21 months. Tuition and fees for 35 credit hours are USD 44,961.95, and living for 21 months at FSU’s own budget is USD 53,445. Tuition isn’t the biggest line here. Rent, food and transport over two years cost more.
| Item | INR | Local currency | When it is due |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tuition and fees, 35 credit hours at USD 1,281.77 plus USD 100 in per-semester fees | INR 43.04 lakh | USD 44,961.95 | Each semester, four semesters |
| Living in Tallahassee, 21 months at USD 2,545 | INR 51.16 lakh | USD 53,445 | Monthly, August 2027 to April 2029 |
| Books and supplies, 4 semesters at USD 690 | INR 2.64 lakh | USD 2,760 | Start of each semester |
| FSU health insurance, 2 years at USD 2,797 | INR 5.36 lakh | USD 5,594 | Billed each year, no waiver |
| Application fee USD 30, SEVIS fee USD 350, visa fee USD 185 | INR 54,000 | USD 565 | Before you travel |
| Full programme, Financial Mathematics | INR 102.74 lakh | USD 107,325.95 | 21 months |
The USD 250 visa integrity fee is in US law (Public Law 119-21), but no official fee page confirmed it was being collected on 24 September 2026, so it's left out of the total. FSU's I-20 needs proof of USD 49,944 for the first year on its 2026 table, which is money you show, not an extra cost. Converted at INR 95.7310 per USD, the FBIL reference rate for 23 September 2026 on rbi.org.in. Flights and the USD 250 visa integrity fee are not included.
The tuition line uses the rate FSU’s Board of Trustees approved on 28 August 2026 for students entering in Fall 2027. The 2026-27 rate is USD 1,278.04. FSU’s own regulation schedules small local fee rises again for 2028-29, so the second year can cost slightly more per credit hour than this table shows.
The minimum is 35 hours, but the department’s sample quant schedule adds up to 38 hours, twelve three-hour courses plus two proseminar hours. If you follow it, add USD 3,845.31, about INR 3.68 lakh. Pure, Applied and Biomathematics students need 36 hours, which is one extra credit hour, USD 1,281.77.
Living is FSU’s 2026-27 off-campus graduate budget of USD 22,906 for nine months, spread at USD 2,545 a month. It runs from arrival in August 2027 to the end of the Spring 2029 term, including the summer of 2028, when most students stay for an internship or an elective.
Health insurance can’t be swapped for a cheaper policy. From 2026-27, FSU enrols every F-1 student automatically and grants no waiver. Two policy years are charged because the degree runs across two August renewals.
Can an Indian student get into the FSU MS in Mathematics?
Yes, if your transcript shows the mathematics FSU names and a 3.0 upper-division GPA. Financial Mathematics lists Calculus I to III, differential equations, linear algebra, and probability and statistics as required prerequisites, plus proof-based courses and programming. GRE isn’t required. A three-year degree isn’t ruled in or out anywhere.
| Requirement | Published rule | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor's degree (India) | A degree comparable to a US bachelor's, judged by a NACES course-by-course evaluation | Order the evaluation early and ask the evaluator to state US equivalence |
| Upper-division GPA (India) | 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in all work attempted from the term of your 60th credit hour | Let the evaluator calculate it, then compare against 3.0 |
| Backlogs (India) | No published cap; the GPA counts all work attempted | Count every failed attempt in the final two years before you apply |
| Mathematics prerequisites | Calculus I, II and III, differential equations, linear algebra, probability and statistics (Financial Mathematics) | Map each one to a course on your marksheet |
| Proof-based courses | Experience with upper-division proof-based mathematics | Name the real analysis or algebra course in your statement |
| Programming | C++, Fortran, Python or Julia before the first semester; Applied wants a compiled language | Show a course or project in one of these languages |
| Major choice | You apply to one major, with an optional second choice | Pick the major whose prerequisites you already meet |
| GRE | Not required by the department | Skip it and spend the time on the statement |
| English test (India) | TOEFL iBT 80 (old scale) or 4.0 (new scale), IELTS 6.5 or PTE 55 | Book a test that lands before December |
| Documents | Statement of purpose, three recommendation letters, CV for Financial Mathematics, evaluated transcripts | Line up three referees by October |
| I-20 funds (India) | USD 49,944 for the first year on FSU's 2026 table | Keep bank letters dated within six months |
The admission file goes to the committee of the major you pick, not to one mathematics panel. The department says admission and funding decisions are made by areas, and a change of area after arrival is possible but not guaranteed. An engineer who wants Financial Mathematics should apply there, not to Applied in the hope of switching.
The English floor is FSU’s graduate minimum. The department adds that area directors may prefer higher scores, so a TOEFL at exactly 80 meets the rule and still leaves you behind stronger files. India isn’t on FSU’s exemption list, so an English-medium degree from India doesn’t waive the test.
Five rules that decide Indian files
Get the evaluation before you pay for anything else
No FSU page says whether a three-year Indian BSc counts as comparable to a US bachelor’s. The Graduate School asks for a comparable degree and leaves the verdict to the evaluator. FSU’s 2026-27 bulletin says the evaluation is required for every non-US record, and the Graduate School won’t review a file until it arrives. A four-year BE, BTech or BSc (Hons) is the safe case. A three-year BSc followed by an Indian MSc fits FSU’s second route, a comparable graduate degree. If you hold only a three-year BSc, get the course-by-course evaluation first and read its equivalence line before you pay the USD 30 application fee.
Your 3.0 is the evaluator's number, not your CGPA divided by 2.5
FSU publishes no conversion table for Indian percentages or CGPA. It recommends The Evaluation Company, formerly SpanTran, because that evaluator calculates the upper-division GPA, and it counts all work attempted from the term of your 60th credit hour. In an Indian four-year degree that’s roughly the last two to two and a half years, backlog attempts included. A strong first year doesn’t help. Ask for the evaluation with the upper-division GPA calculated, and don’t apply on a GPA you worked out yourself.
Catch-up courses cost fees and earn nothing toward the degree
The Graduate Bulletin is blunt:“No 4000-level course in this department may count toward the master’s degree.”FSU Graduate Bulletin 2026-27, Department of Mathematics
The Applied major says students admitted with minor deficiencies may be required to take specific courses. If your transcript is missing linear algebra or a proof course, anything you make up at FSU below the 5000 level is paid at USD 1,281.77 an hour on top of your 35 or 36.Plan as self-funded, whatever the application form asks
The application asks whether you want to be considered for financial assistance, and the department page lists TA, RA and waiver awards. Then the funding page says teaching assistantships go only to PhD applicants, and the Financial Mathematics FAQ says:“M.S. students are normally self-funded, but in some years the Department has a few tuition waivers available.”FSU Department of Mathematics, Financial Mathematics FAQ
The same page offers special actuarial teaching assistantships to qualified actuarial-track MS students, so the two pages disagree. Tick yes, apply by 15 December, and build your loan and family budget on the full INR 102.74 lakh.30 April is the department's date, not the safe date
Three dates apply to you, and the latest one is the riskiest. The mathematics department lists a December funding date and an April cut-off, and FSU’s Graduate School runs a 15 January priority date for international applicants. A department yes isn’t formal admission either. FSU’s Center for Global Engagement opens the I-20 request about two business days after the Graduate School formally admits you. An April file leaves May to August for formal admission, the I-20, the SEVIS fee and a visa interview in India, so aim for 15 December or 15 January.
How and when should you apply to the FSU MS in Mathematics for Fall 2027?
Apply through FSU’s graduate application to one major, with transcripts sent through a NACES evaluator. The department’s admission deadline for Fall 2027 is 30 April 2027, but files complete by 15 December 2026 are the ones considered for waivers and fellowships. There’s no spring start, so missing Fall costs a full year.
The sequence runs through four hands. You file the FSU graduate application, the evaluator sends the course-by-course report, the mathematics major's committee recommends admission, and the Graduate School admits you formally. Only after that does the Center for Global Engagement open your I-20 request, and the US consulate in India decides the visa.
| Start by | Task | Takes | Why this date |
|---|---|---|---|
| 22 Feb 2027 | Take TOEFL or IELTS | 60 days | Allow preparation, one retake and the score reaching FSU directly from the test agency. |
| 05 Mar 2027 | Match your marksheets to the prerequisite list | 14 days | Two weeks to find calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, probability and a proof course by name. |
| 19 Mar 2027 | Get the NACES course-by-course evaluation | 35 days | The Graduate School won't review a file until the evaluation of your Indian transcript arrives. |
| 24 Mar 2027 | Secure three recommendation letters | 30 days | Referees get an email link from the application, so give them a month. |
| 02 Apr 2027 | Write the statement of purpose and CV | 21 days | Name the courses that meet each prerequisite and the major you're choosing. |
| 23 Apr 2027 | Submit and pay the USD 30 fee | 7 days | A week to fix upload errors before the department's date. |
The allowances are Nbyula planning estimates, not processing times published by Florida State University.
FSU recommends The Evaluation Company, formerly SpanTran, because it calculates the upper-division GPA for you, but any NACES member is accepted. Ask for the course-by-course report, not a document-by-document one, and have your university send marksheets and the degree or provisional certificate. FSU rejects notarised copies and transcripts marked as issued to the student.
The USD 30 application fee can’t be waived, and FSU won’t accept an application earlier than a year before the term. Each referee gets an email link from the application, so their letters arrive on their own schedule, not yours. Chase them in the first week, because a missing letter keeps the file incomplete for the December funding date.
The plan above fits the 30 April deadline. For waiver consideration, move every date back to 15 December 2026, which means starting the English test and the evaluation by early October.
What jobs and salaries follow the FSU MS in Mathematics?
The department says Financial Mathematics alumni work as quants in industry and government, as actuaries and in academia, but it publishes no placement rate or salary for any mathematics master’s major. US government pay data gives context, and the degree’s CIP code, 27.0101, qualifies for the 24-month STEM OPT extension.
| Measure | Figure | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| MS placement rate | Not published | No figure on the department, major or handbook pages checked on 24 September 2026 |
| Named summer intern hosts | 8 organisations | Department list, undated, including Bloomberg, Bank of America and Bell Trading |
| Actuaries, US median pay | USD 130,000 | BLS, May 2025, all US actuaries, not FSU graduates |
| Mathematicians, US median pay | USD 126,710 | BLS, May 2025, all US mathematicians |
| Financial analysts, US median pay | USD 103,570 | BLS, 2025, all US financial analysts |
| OPT after the degree | 12 + 24 months | CIP 27.0101 is on the DHS STEM list dated 22 July 2024 |
| H-1B master's cap | 20,000 extra places | Reserved for US master's graduates, still subject to the lottery |
The pay rows describe whole US occupations in 2025. None of them is an FSU salary, and none predicts what an F-1 graduate will earn.
The intern list on the Financial Mathematics page names Southern Company, Bloomberg, CitiMortgage, Yahoo!, Bank of America, Bell Trading, the Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta and the Florida State Board of Administration. The page calls them past hosts and gives no years, so read it as proof of reach, not as a recruiting pipeline.
The cohort is small. FSU’s Fact Book counts 16 master’s degrees in Mathematics in 2024-25 across all four majors, including degrees earned on the way to a PhD. A small class means more faculty contact and fewer classmates to share job leads with.
Actuarial work needs exams on top of the degree. The BLS says it can take up to seven years to reach associate-level certification. The actuarial track’s courses are built around those exams, and FSU adjusts the course list for students who’ve already passed one.
OPT gives 12 months of work after the degree, and USCIS allows a 24-month STEM extension for degrees on the DHS list. FSU codes every mathematics major, including Financial Mathematics, as 27.0101 Mathematics, General, not 27.0305 Financial Mathematics. Both codes are on the list.
For the H-1B, USCIS reserves 20,000 petitions a year for US master’s graduates. The USD 100,000 payment under the September 2025 proclamation applies to petitions for people outside the US, not to a change of status granted inside it, and a June 2026 court order has blocked its collection. The proclamation was renewed on 18 September 2026.
How is Florida State University ranked for mathematics?
Neither QS nor Times Higher Education gives a mathematics subject position for FSU that we could confirm from their own pages, so only the overall tables are shown. Rankings are context here, not an admission rule, and none of them measures the master's majors or their graduates' jobs.
| Publisher | Position | Table and year |
|---|---|---|
| QS | #549 | World University Rankings 2026 |
| Times Higher Education | 301 to 350 | World University Rankings 2026 |
| US News | #51 (tie) | Best Colleges 2026, National Universities |
Who should shortlist the FSU MS in Mathematics, and who shouldn't?
Shortlist it if you already hold a mathematics-heavy degree, can code, and can pay about INR 102.74 lakh without an assistantship. Skip it if your degree stopped at business mathematics, or if the plan depends on a TA post. The department gives those to PhD applicants.
| Verdict | Your background | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Strong fit | BSc or MSc Mathematics or Statistics with a 3.0 upper-division GPA and Python or C++ | Your transcript already covers every Financial Mathematics prerequisite, and the course list leads straight to quant or actuarial roles. |
| Strong fit | BTech with three semesters of engineering mathematics, probability and coding | Applied welcomes engineers with strong computational backgrounds, and Financial Mathematics takes them if probability and linear algebra are on the transcript. |
| Needs evidence | Three-year BSc Mathematics without an MSc | No FSU page decides it. The evaluator's equivalence line does, so get it before applying. |
| Needs evidence | Graduate aiming for a PhD later | MS students can take the PhD qualifier courses and apply to transfer after a year, but FSU says transfers are competitive. |
| Do not shortlist | BCom, BBA or economics graduate without Calculus III and linear algebra | Missing prerequisites can't be made up for credit, since 4000-level courses don't count. FSU's MS Finance is the closer fit. |
| Do not shortlist | Anyone who needs a stipend or waiver to afford the degree | Teaching assistantships go to PhD applicants and MS waivers appear only in some years. |
Compare the four majors
| Programme | Best for | Main limit |
|---|---|---|
| Financial Mathematics, 35 hours | Quant finance or actuarial careers, with two tracks | Coursework only, and the heaviest prerequisite list |
| Applied and Computational, 36 hours | Numerical methods, PDEs and scientific computing, with a thesis option | Expects PDE, real analysis and numerical analysis already done |
| Pure Mathematics, 36 hours | Algebra, analysis and topology before a PhD | Built as the first two years of a PhD, with little job-facing content |
| Biomathematics, 36 hours | Modelling in biology and computational biology | Needs two courses outside mathematics and suits research careers |
The biggest mismatch we see is the commerce graduate reading “financial mathematics” as a finance degree. It’s a mathematics degree first. The first Fall has Introduction to Financial Mathematics, Scientific Programming and Distribution Theory side by side, and the Spring brings Financial Engineering I.
What do you study in the FSU MS in Mathematics?
Financial Mathematics needs 35 credit hours, 33 letter-graded plus 2 proseminar hours, and every required course is listed below with its track. Quant-track students add five or six approved electives. Pure, Applied and Biomathematics need 36 hours around their own core sequences, listed after the table.
Financial Mathematics required courses by track
| Code | Component | Credit hours | Where it sits |
|---|---|---|---|
| MAP 5601 | Introduction to Financial Mathematics | 3 | Both tracks, first Fall |
| MAP 6621 | Financial Engineering I | 3 | Quant track, Spring |
| MAP 5615 | Monte Carlo Methods in Financial Mathematics | 3 | Quant track, Spring |
| MAT 5939r | Financial Mathematics Proseminar | 2 | Quant track, 1 hour each Fall and Spring, pass or fail |
| ISC 5305 | Scientific Programming | 3 | Quant track, Fall |
| STA 5326 or STA 6346 | Distribution Theory and Inference, or Advanced Probability and Inference I | 3 | Quant track, Fall |
| CAP 5768 | Introduction to Data Science | 3 | Quant track, Fall |
| MAP 5932 | Financial Mathematics for Actuaries | 3 | Actuarial track, Fall |
| MAP 5932 | Short Term Actuarial Math I | 3 | Actuarial track, Spring |
| MAT 5932 | Short-Term Actuarial Models II | 3 | Actuarial track, Fall |
| MAP 5177 | Long-Term Actuarial Models I | 3 | Actuarial track, Fall |
| MAP 5178 | Long-Term Actuarial Models II | 3 | Actuarial track, Spring |
| STA 5325 | Mathematical Statistics | 3 | Actuarial track, Spring |
| STA 5207 | Applied Regression Methods | 3 | Actuarial track, Fall |
| STA 5856 | Time Series and Forecasting Methods | 3 | Actuarial track, Spring |
| MAT 5939 | Two 1-hour seminars from Actuarial P-Seminar, Actuarial FM-Seminar or the Proseminar | 2 | Actuarial track, pass or fail |
| Financial Mathematics degree minimum | 35 |
- Financial Mathematics, 35 hours with at least 33 letter-graded. Pure, Applied and Biomathematics, 36 hours with at least 30 letter-graded.
- No 4000-level mathematics course counts, and you need a 3.0 cumulative GPA every semester to stay off probation.
The course codes explain why the prerequisite check is strict. MAP 5601 and STA 5326 sit in your very first semester, and both assume calculus, linear algebra and probability are already done. There’s no bridging semester to catch up in.
Quant-track electives come from an approved list that includes Numerical Linear Algebra, Numerical Optimization, Measure and Integration, Data Mining, Applied Machine Learning, Financial Derivatives and Econometrics. The department’s sample schedule leaves the summer after the first year free for an optional elective or an internship.
Pure Mathematics is built on three core sequences. Algebra is MAS 5307, MAS 5308 and MAS 5311, topology is MTG 5326, MTG 5327 and either MTG 5346 or MTG 5932, and analysis is MAA 5616, MAA 5617 and MAA 5406. FSU expects two undergraduate semesters each of abstract algebra and real analysis before you start.
Applied and Computational Mathematics has an 18-hour core of three year-long sequences, MAD 5403 and 5404, MAP 5345 and 5346, and MAP 5165 with MAP 5423, each passed at C minus or better. You then take any three mandatory courses, such as Finite Element Methods or Numerical Optimization, and 9 hours of electives.
Biomathematics requires MAP 5486, MAP 5932 Spatial and Temporal Models in Biology, MAD 5306, MAP 6437 and a 1-hour seminar every semester. Two courses must come from biology, chemistry, statistics, computer science or scientific computing, and at least five 3-hour courses must be mathematics.
A thesis route exists only in Pure and Applied, with at least 30 letter-graded hours plus 6 hours of MAT 5971r and a defence. The Pure major’s own page doesn’t describe a thesis at all, so confirm it with the director before you plan on one. If your cumulative GPA drops below 3.0, FSU puts you on probation, and a second semester below it means dismissal.
Should you shortlist the FSU MS in Mathematics?
Shortlist it if your transcript already carries Calculus III, linear algebra, differential equations and probability, and you can fund the full two years yourself. The deciding check is the course-by-course evaluation, which sets both your degree equivalence and the 3.0 upper-division GPA that FSU reads.
What you get is a two-year mathematics degree with a quant or actuarial track, no GRE, a STEM code that opens 36 months of OPT. What it costs you is time. It's four semesters where many Indian applicants compare it with one-year US finance master's, and the nine months from August 2028 to April 2029 add about INR 21.93 lakh of living cost alone.
Two things are genuinely hard here. The money is all yours, because teaching assistantships go to PhD applicants and MS waivers turn up only in some years, so a family that needs aid should not apply. And the prerequisites are real courses, not a degree title, with no credit for 4000-level catch-up, which rules out most commerce graduates.
- Financial Mathematics needs 35 credit hours at USD 1,281.77 each for Fall 2027 entry, and the full two-year cost comes to about INR 102.74 lakh.
- The department's Fall 2027 admission deadline is 30 April 2027, but only files complete by 15 December 2026 are considered for waivers and fellowships.
- GRE isn't required, and the English floor is TOEFL iBT 80 or IELTS 6.5, with no exemption for Indian English-medium degrees.
- Teaching assistantships go to PhD applicants, and FSU says MS students are self-funded apart from a few waivers in some years.
- Every major carries CIP 27.0101, which is on the DHS STEM list, so graduates can apply for 12 months of OPT plus a 24-month extension.
- FSU awarded 16 master's degrees in Mathematics in 2024-25, a small cohort across four majors.
Frequently asked questions
What is the total cost of MS Mathematics at FSU for Indian students?
About INR 102.74 lakh, or USD 107,325.95, for the 35-hour Financial Mathematics major starting Fall 2027. That covers tuition at USD 1,281.77 per credit hour, per-semester fees, 21 months of living at FSU's budget, books, two years of compulsory health insurance, and the application, SEVIS and visa fees. Flights are extra.
Is GRE required for MS Mathematics at Florida State University?
No. FSU's Department of Mathematics states that GRE scores are not required for its graduate programmes, and FSU has had no university-wide test requirement for master's admissions since the Spring 2026 cycle. You still need a 3.0 upper-division GPA, three recommendation letters, a statement of purpose and an English test score.
What is the last date to apply for FSU MS Mathematics Fall 2027?
The department's admission deadline is 30 April 2027, and Financial Mathematics may consider files up to 30 June if space remains. Files complete by 15 December 2026 are the ones considered for waivers and fellowships. FSU admits mathematics master's students only in Fall, so there's no spring start to fall back on.
Does FSU accept a three-year BSc for MS Mathematics?
FSU doesn't say either way. It asks for a degree comparable to a US bachelor's and lets a NACES course-by-course evaluation decide. A four-year BE, BTech or BSc Honours is the safe case, and a three-year BSc followed by an Indian MSc fits FSU's graduate-degree route. Get the evaluation before paying the application fee.
Can I get a scholarship or assistantship for MS Mathematics at FSU?
Plan without one. FSU's mathematics department gives teaching assistantships only to PhD applicants and says MS students are self-funded, with a few tuition waivers in some years. Qualified actuarial-track MS students can be considered for special actuarial teaching assistantships. Apply by 15 December 2026 to be considered for anything that exists.
Is FSU MS Financial Mathematics STEM designated for OPT?
Yes. FSU codes Financial Mathematics, like its other mathematics majors, as CIP 27.0101 Mathematics, General, and that code is on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List dated 22 July 2024. Graduates can apply for 12 months of OPT and then a 24-month STEM extension, subject to USCIS rules.
Which subjects must I have studied for FSU Financial Mathematics?
FSU names Calculus I, II and III, differential equations, linear algebra, and probability and statistics as required, plus upper-division proof-based courses and programming in C++, Fortran, Python or Julia. Real analysis, numerical analysis and some economics or finance are recommended. Courses at the 4000 level taken at FSU don't count toward the degree.
How is FSU Financial Mathematics different from FSU MS Finance?
Financial Mathematics sits in the Department of Mathematics, runs four semesters over 35 credit hours and expects calculus, linear algebra, probability and programming. FSU's MS Finance is a business school degree that starts in summer. A commerce graduate without Calculus III and linear algebra is a closer match for the Finance degree.
