What is FSU's course-work MS in Biological Science?
It’s a 32 credit hour Master of Science with no thesis, which FSU’s biology department calls the cbMS. At USD 1,281.77 a credit hour for Fall 2027, tuition alone is USD 41,016.64. With 22 months of living, insurance and visa fees, the two-year plan totals INR 101.50 lakh, all of it self-funded.
You pick one area, ecology and evolution, cell and molecular biology or neuroscience, and then build your own course list with a faculty supervisor. Beyond 21 letter-graded credits, the fixed parts are six credits of directed individual study, a written report on it and a written comprehensive exam. This page covers Fall 2027 entry. That window opened on 1 August 2026 and closes on 1 June 2027, and FSU hasn’t yet put out its Fall 2027 I-20 funding table or the 2027-28 insurance premium.
How much does FSU's course-work biology MS cost an Indian student?
Budget INR 101.50 lakh (USD 106,025.64) for the two-year plan, with nothing coming back as a stipend or waiver. The line people underestimate is living, not tuition. At FSU’s Fall 2027 rate the 32 credit hours cost USD 41,016.64, while 22 months in Tallahassee cost USD 55,990.
| Item | INR | Local currency | When it is due |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tuition and fees, 32 credit hours | INR 39.36 lakh | USD 41,116.64 | Each term, Fall 2027 to Spring 2029 |
| Living, 22 months | INR 53.60 lakh | USD 55,990 | Monthly from August 2027 |
| Books and supplies, 4 terms | INR 2.64 lakh | USD 2,760 | Start of each term |
| FSU health insurance, 2 years | INR 5.36 lakh | USD 5,594 | Billed each August |
| Application, SEVIS and visa fees | INR 54,000 | USD 565 | Before you fly |
| Total, two-year plan | INR 101.50 lakh | USD 106,025.64 | August 2027 to May 2029 |
FSU's I-20 asks for proof of USD 49,944 for year one on its 2026 table, about INR 47.81 lakh, and that money stays yours. A USD 250 visa integrity fee is in US law, but its collection wasn't confirmed on 24 September 2026, so it's left out of the total. Converted at INR 95.7310 to the US dollar, the FBIL reference rate for 23 September 2026 shown on the RBI website. Flights and a housing deposit aren't included.
The tuition row is 32 x USD 1,281.77, which is USD 41,016.64, plus the USD 20 facility fee and the USD 5 FSUCard fee in each of four terms. The Board of Trustees approved the Fall 2027 fee rise on 28 August 2026. The biology department publishes no cost estimate of its own for this track, so FSU’s university figures are the only ones to check against.
Living uses FSU’s 2026-27 off-campus graduate budget of USD 22,906 for nine months, which is USD 2,545 a month, charged for all 22 months from August 2027 to May 2029 with the summer included. Books are USD 690 a term from the same budget. Insurance isn’t optional, because every F-1 student is enrolled in the FSU plan automatically from 2026-27 at USD 2,797 a year, with no waiver for an Indian policy.
The department also shows a one-year plan of Fall, Spring and a Summer term. It’s the same 32 credits, so tuition barely moves, but three terms of fees, 13 months of living and two insurance years bring it to USD 82,400.64, about INR 78.88 lakh. That’s roughly INR 22.6 lakh less. The catch is a heavy load of 12 to 14 credits a term with both research terms squeezed into Spring and Summer.
Two things can push the total up. FSU’s international office tells students to allow for rises of up to 15% a year in tuition and fees, and the second year of this plan carries about 14 credit hours, so a 15% rise on those alone would add close to USD 2,700, about INR 2.58 lakh. The rupee is the other risk. A 5% fall against the 23 September 2026 rate would add about INR 5.08 lakh to the whole plan, before any fee change.
Nothing on this page shrinks with a good profile. The handbook says course-work students are not eligible to receive a tuition waiver, and FSU keeps out-of-state waivers for graduate assistants and fellows. The department may occasionally hire a course-work student as a teaching assistant, but it tells you to be ready to finish with no support at all.
Can an Indian biology graduate get into FSU's course-work MS?
Yes, if your upper-division GPA works out to 3.0 on a NACES evaluation, your English clears the department’s higher bar and your file shows you can cope with fast graduate biology courses. The GRE is waived for this track. Meeting the minimums isn’t enough on its own, because the department accepts only a small number.
| Requirement | Published rule | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor's degree (India) | A degree comparable to a US bachelor's, with a 3.0 GPA on all upper-division work | Order a NACES course-by-course evaluation that works out the upper-division GPA |
| Three-year BSc (India) | No FSU or department rule either way; the evaluation decides comparability | Get the evaluation before you pay the USD 30 application fee |
| Biology coursework | Upper-level genetics, evolution, cell biology or molecular biology; physics, chemistry and maths or statistics help | Match your BSc papers to these subjects in your statement |
| Area of interest | Ecology and evolution, cell and molecular biology, or neuroscience, named on the biology supplemental form | Pick the area whose faculty fit your plan |
| Directed study supervisor | Six credits of directed individual study with a faculty member; applicants are encouraged to find a lab before applying | Email two or three faculty in your area before you submit |
| Credential evaluation (India) | Official NACES evaluation, The Evaluation Company preferred; no offer until it arrives | Start it the week your final marksheets come out |
| GRE | Waived for course-work MS applicants | Don't book the GRE for this application |
| English test (India) | IELTS 7.0 with 6.5 speaking, or TOEFL 92 with 26 speaking (5.0 and 5.0 on the new scale) | Book IELTS or TOEFL, not PTE or Duolingo |
| Letters and documents | Three recommendation letters, a statement of purpose and a CV | Ask referees to speak to your graduate-level coursework |
| Proof of funds (India) | USD 49,944 for year one on FSU's 2026 I-20 table, dated within six months | Get bank letters on letterhead, signed by a manager |
| Full-time study on F-1 (India) | 9 credit hours in Fall and Spring, at least 6 of them in person | Plan 9 or more credits in every term but the last |
The GRE has two answers on FSU’s own pages. The programme page says GRE scores are waived for course-work MS applicants, while the 2026-27 Bulletin chapter still lists GRE scores as required unless a waiver is granted. The department runs this admission, so its waiver is the rule to follow. If you already hold a strong score, reporting it does no harm.
The department’s FAQ gives some sense of scale. It gets 200 to 300 graduate applications a year across all its degrees and usually starts 10 to 20 students each Fall, and those counts include the PhD and thesis MS. For the course-work MS it says only that a small number are accepted, and it looks for evidence you’ll manage rigorous, fast-paced graduate biology courses and for a clear link between the degree and your career plan.
The faculty contact matters more than it looks. You need a supervisor for six credits of directed study, and the department encourages you to find one before applying. On the supplemental form you also list three faculty as possible advisers, so a short, specific email to each, naming a paper of theirs and what you’d like to do, is part of the application in practice.
Six rules that reject or stall Indian files
Bring IELTS 7.0, because FSU's 6.5 minimum doesn't apply here
FSU’s Graduate School accepts IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 80 or 4.0 on the new scale, and PTE 55. The biology department sets its own, higher line.“TOEFL: 92 total 26 on speaking. IELTS: 7.0 total 6.5 on speaking.”FSU Biological Science, admission requirements
The April 2026 handbook adds 5.0 overall and 5.0 in speaking for TOEFL taken on or after 21 January 2026, and says other tests are considered only ad hoc. So a PTE or Duolingo score is a gamble. Speaking has its own floor, so book the test early enough to retake it.Don't assume a three-year BSc is accepted, or that it's refused
No FSU page says either way. What the Graduate Bulletin asks for is a degree comparable to a US bachelor’s, with a 3.0 GPA on upper-division work, and a NACES course-by-course evaluation decides both. FSU counts the upper-division GPA from the term of your 60th credit hour to the end of the degree, and it doesn’t publish a percentage or CGPA conversion of its own, so the evaluator’s number is the one that counts. A four-year BTech or BSc (Hons) is the safe case. With a three-year BSc, get the evaluation first, and only then pay the fee.
1 June is the last date, and the review only starts after it
The course-work MS runs on its own calendar, later than the rest of the department.“Course-Work only MS: Fall – June 1st Spring – November 1st”FSU Biological Science, graduate studies
The programme page adds that applications are reviewed by a faculty committee after each application deadline. So a Fall offer lands in summer, when the I-20, SEVIS and visa steps still lie ahead of you. FSU’s Graduate School also asks international applicants to be in by its 15 January priority date. Submit by January and ask the graduate coordinator whether a complete file can be looked at early. Ignore the 31 January 2022 date still sitting on the department’s FAQ page. There's no money on this track, and no switching to the funded one later
The department is blunt about it.“Neither the Department nor the University offers any financial support to cbMS students – no scholarships or assistantships.”FSU Biological Science, course-work only MS
The same page says there’s no formal pathway from this track to the thesis MS or PhD. Those programmes do pay, with a minimum 2024 stipend of USD 27,120 for thesis MS students plus a tuition waiver, but you’d have to apply to them separately, for Fall only, by 1 December. If you need funding, that’s the application to make.Rework the printed two-year plan, because its first term is below F-1 full time
The department’s two-year plan starts with 6 letter-graded and 2 S/U credits in the first Fall, which is 8. FSU’s international office sets a higher floor for F-1 graduate students.“9 credit hours minimum with at least 6 credits of in-person (not online, remote or virtual) classes”FSU Center for Global Engagement, enrolment
Only your final term may drop below that. Spread the same 32 credits as 9, 9, 9 and 5 instead, and settle it with the programme director before your first registration.Take 5000 and 6000 level courses only, even though one page allows 4000
The department’s degree page says approved 4000-level courses can count. The April 2026 graduate handbook limits the degree to 5000-6000 level work, and the 2026-27 Bulletin agrees with it. Go by the handbook. A 4000-level course that your committee later refuses to count means an extra course, and at USD 1,281.77 a credit hour, a 3-credit slip costs you about INR 3.68 lakh.
How do you apply to FSU's course-work biology MS for Fall 2027?
You file one application with the Graduate School, and the biology faculty committee decides after the 1 June 2027 deadline. Three hand-overs sit outside FSU, the credential evaluator, the English test agency and your three referees. Work backwards from 1 June, but aim to be complete months earlier because of the visa.
You apply online through FSU's Graduate School and choose the course-work MS in Biological Science, naming your area on the biology supplemental form. The evaluator sends your Indian records, the test agency sends your scores and referees upload their letters. After an offer, FSU's Center for Global Engagement issues the I-20 once your funds are proved, and then you pay SEVIS and book the visa interview.
| Start by | Task | Takes | Why this date |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 Mar 2027 | Contact faculty for a directed-study lab | 45 days | Observed lead time; replies from faculty can take weeks. |
| 26 Mar 2027 | IELTS or TOEFL at the department's level | 60 days | Leave room for a retake if speaking falls short of 6.5 or 26. |
| 30 Mar 2027 | Collect marksheets and degree certificate | 21 days | Your university must send or certify them; notarised copies aren't accepted. |
| 20 Apr 2027 | NACES course-by-course evaluation | 35 days | Faculty can't make an offer until the official evaluation arrives. |
| 25 Apr 2027 | Brief three referees | 30 days | Letters should speak to graduate-level coursework. |
| 04 May 2027 | Write the statement, CV and supplemental form | 21 days | Name your area and three faculty as possible advisers. |
| 25 May 2027 | Submit and pay USD 30 | 7 days | The fee can't be waived; keep a week for upload problems. |
The allowances are Nbyula planning estimates, not processing times published by Florida State University.
Spring entry is real for this track, unlike the thesis MS and PhD, which normally take Fall students only. The Spring 2027 deadline is 1 November 2026, so it only works if your evaluation and English scores are already in hand. The next Spring window, for 2028, opens on 1 August 2027 and closes on 1 November 2027.
Admission is term specific at FSU. If you’re admitted for Fall 2027 and can’t travel, the Graduate School says you’ll need to reapply for a later term, so a delayed visa costs you the application fee and the wait.
The evaluation step has a small shortcut. FSU’s preferred evaluator, The Evaluation Company, which used to trade as SpanTran, runs a custom FSU application that picks the right kind of report and calculates the upper-division GPA for you. Any NACES member is accepted, though, so if you already hold a course-by-course report from another member, ask whether it can be reused before paying twice.
Keep your own copy of everything the evaluator sends. The biology page says the application isn’t complete until the credential evaluation is received, and the faculty can’t make you an offer until the official evaluation has arrived.
If the committee decides in the first half of June, you have about ten weeks for the I-20, the SEVIS payment and a US visa appointment in India before a late-August start. That’s tight in a busy visa season, so treat 1 June as a hard stop, not a target.
What can you do after FSU's course-work MS in Biological Science?
FSU publishes no placement rate, salary or employer list for this track, and the department is frank that it’s built for students heading to professional school and for working professionals. US labour data shows the nearest lab jobs usually hire at bachelor’s level, so treat the MS as a stronger transcript and a credential, not a salary jump.
| Measure | Figure | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| FSU placement rate for this track | Not published | No rate, salary or employer list on the programme, department, handbook or Bulletin pages, checked 24 September 2026 |
| Master's degrees awarded | 11 in 2024-25 | FSU Fact Book, CIP 26.0101; thesis and course-work routes counted together |
| Biological technicians, US median | USD 57,510 | BLS, 2025; the usual entry is a bachelor's degree |
| Biological technician jobs, growth | 7% | BLS projection for 2025 to 2035, from 74,400 jobs in 2025 |
| Microbiologists, US median | USD 87,990 | BLS, 2025; some employers prefer a master's or PhD |
| Work after the degree | 12 + 24 months | OPT plus STEM OPT; CIP 26.0101 is on the 2024 DHS STEM list and FSU's own list |
| H-1B master's quota | 20,000 a year | Extra cap places for US master's graduates, still chosen by a wage-weighted lottery |
| Route into FSU's biology PhD | No direct route | The department says there's no formal pathway from this track to its thesis MS or PhD |
The wages are US national figures for everyone in the occupation, not for FSU graduates and not starting pay.
Eleven master’s degrees in 2024-25, split between the thesis and course-work routes, is a small class. You’ll know the faculty, but there’s no alumni pipeline for this track that FSU documents, and nobody at FSU publishes where these graduates went. The microbiologist figure is where a master’s can count, since BLS says some employers prefer one, while biological technician roles are open to bachelor’s holders.
Work rights come from the CIP code on your I-20. Biology/Biological Sciences, General, 26.0101, is on the 2024 DHS STEM list, so you can apply for 12 months of OPT and then a 24-month STEM extension. The OPT application has to go in no earlier than 90 days before you finish and no later than 60 days after. Under a July 2026 DHS rule, the grace period after your programme end date is 30 days, not 60, so a job search has to start in your last term.
The department’s own pitch is that this degree strengthens a record before professional school. For an Indian student that use is narrower than it sounds, because the professional school decides how much a course-work master’s counts, and FSU publishes nothing on where its course-work graduates were admitted. Ask the programme director for recent destinations before you spend on that basis.
The H-1B lottery now gives higher-wage offers more entries, and a USD 100,000 payment applies to some petitions. It doesn’t apply to a change of status granted inside the US, and a court order has stopped its collection since June 2026, though DHS says it still plans to collect if that order is lifted. An entry-level offer at wage level I goes into the pool once, against four times for a level IV offer.
How is FSU ranked for biology?
US News places FSU 115th, tied, among US graduate schools in biological sciences, the table closest to this degree. That ranking reflects the department’s research, which a course-work master’s touches only through its directed study. None of these tables is an admission rule or measures this track.
| Publisher | Position | Table and year |
|---|---|---|
| US News | #115 (tie) | Best Graduate Schools, Biological Sciences, listed April 2026 |
| QS | #549 | World University Rankings 2026, overall |
| Times Higher Education | 301 to 350 | World University Rankings 2026, overall |
Who should pick FSU's course-work biology MS, and who shouldn't?
It fits a self-funded graduate who wants more advanced biology on the transcript before a professional-school application, or a working biologist who needs a master’s to move up. It doesn’t fit anyone who needs a stipend, or anyone set on a PhD, because the department itself points that reader to its thesis route.
| Verdict | Your background | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Strong fit | Four-year BTech Biotechnology or BSc (Hons) in a life science, family-funded | Four years is the safe case for comparability, and the open course list lets you add advanced cell, molecular or bioinformatics courses quickly. |
| Strong fit | Three to five years in a pharma QC, diagnostics or research-support lab | The department names mid-career professionals as a target, and directed study can build on lab work you already do. |
| Needs evidence | Three-year BSc in Biology, Zoology or Botany | FSU hasn't said whether it's comparable. A NACES evaluation decides, so get one before you spend on anything else. |
| Needs evidence | IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL in the mid-80s | That clears FSU's university minimum but not this department's 7.0 with 6.5 speaking, so plan a retake first. |
| Do not shortlist | Planning a biology PhD after the master's | The department says PhD-bound students are better served by its thesis MS or PhD, and there's no transfer route out of this track. |
| Do not shortlist | Needs an assistantship or waiver to afford the US | This track has no scholarship, assistantship or tuition waiver. The thesis MS is the funded option, with a 1 December deadline. |
The two master’s tracks are different applications, not one degree with an option. The thesis MS takes Fall entry only, closes on 1 December, needs a faculty member who takes master’s students, and pays a stipend with a tuition waiver in return for teaching and research. The course-work MS takes Fall or Spring entry, closes in June or November and pays nothing.
If your interest is statistical work on biological data rather than biology itself, look at FSU’s MS Biostatistics too. It sits in the Department of Statistics with its own course list and entry rules, and it’s a separate application.
Pick the course-work route for what it’s good at. It’s quick to shape around a goal, it needs no thesis defence, and its one research component is two terms of directed study that can be literature-based if you don’t want lab work.
What will you study in FSU's course-work MS in Biological Science?
Very little is fixed. You need 32 credit hours, 21 of them letter-graded at 5000 or 6000 level, plus six credits of directed individual study, a colloquium every term and one graduate tutorial. You and your committee pick the rest from the department’s graduate courses, which is why the entry check leans on biology depth.

The note “Elective, letter-graded” applies to 23 components in this table.
- At least 32 credit hours, of which 21 must carry letter grades rather than S/U
- Only graduate courses numbered 5000 and above count toward the 32
- A 3.0 GPA in your courses is needed before you can sit the written comprehensive exam
- Form your committee, the programme director plus your directed-study supervisor, by the end of your first term
The course list comes from the Biological Science entry in FSU’s 2024-25 Graduate Bulletin, the latest edition that lists the department’s graduate courses in full. Not every course runs every year, since the handbook says areas add courses when demand is sufficient. Ask the programme director which ones run in 2027-28 before you build your plan.
The directed individual study gives the degree its shape. It runs over roughly two terms, can be literature-based or lab-based, and ends in a written report. The handbook says the comprehensive exam is usually set by the same supervisor and may be tailored to your research area, so choosing that supervisor well matters more than any single course.
Twenty-one letter-graded credits is seven 3-credit courses. Several list prerequisites an Indian BSc may not show by name, for example Molecular Biology asks for a named undergraduate course or its equivalent, or the instructor’s permission, and Community Ecology asks for general ecology and statistics. Check those against your marksheet before your first registration.
Should you shortlist FSU's course-work MS in Biological Science?
Shortlist it only if you’re heading for a US professional school or need a biology master’s for your career, and your family can pay the full INR 101.50 lakh. The department says in so many words that this track gets no scholarships and no assistantships, and it accepts only a small number of applicants.
What you get is freedom. There's almost no fixed course list, so you can stack advanced cell biology, bioinformatics, virology or ecology around what you want to do next, and a fast student can finish in three terms. What it costs you is a route onward. There's no thesis, and FSU says there's no formal pathway from this track into its funded thesis MS or PhD, so treat the degree as an endpoint.
Three things are genuinely hard here. The money is all yours, and on the two-year plan it's just over a crore of rupees at today's rate. The English bar is IELTS 7.0 with 6.5 in speaking, higher than FSU's own university minimum, so a 6.5 that gets you into other FSU master's won't get you into this one. And the nearest US job categories, biological technician and microbiologist, list a bachelor's as the usual entry, so the MS rarely lifts your starting level on its own. If a PhD is the plan, the department itself tells you to take the thesis route instead.
- FSU's course-work MS in Biological Science needs 32 credit hours, which at USD 1,281.77 a credit hour for Fall 2027 is USD 41,016.64 in tuition alone.
- The two-year plan costs about INR 101.50 lakh in all, and this track has no scholarship, assistantship or tuition waiver.
- The biology department wants IELTS 7.0 with 6.5 in speaking, or TOEFL 92 with 26, above FSU's university minimum of IELTS 6.5.
- Fall 2027 applications close on 1 June 2027 and Spring 2027 on 1 November 2026, and the faculty review each round only after its deadline.
- CIP code 26.0101 is on the 2024 DHS STEM list, so graduates can apply for 12 months of OPT and a 24-month STEM extension.
Frequently asked questions
What is the total cost of MS Biological Science at FSU for Indian students?
About INR 101.50 lakh (USD 106,025.64) for the two-year course-work plan starting Fall 2027. That covers 32 credit hours at USD 1,281.77 each, 22 months of living at FSU's estimate, books, two years of compulsory FSU health insurance, and the application, SEVIS and visa fees. The one-year plan comes to about INR 78.88 lakh.
Does FSU give scholarships or assistantships for the course-work MS in biology?
No. FSU's Department of Biological Science says neither it nor the university offers any financial support to course-work MS students, and its handbook rules out tuition waivers. Funding goes to thesis MS and PhD students. The department may occasionally hire a course-work student as a teaching assistant, but you should plan to pay everything yourself.
Is GRE required for MS Biological Science at FSU?
No, not for the course-work MS. The department's programme page says GRE scores are waived for these applicants. The 2026-27 FSU Graduate Bulletin still describes the GRE as required unless waived, but the department runs this admission and its waiver applies. Report a strong score if you already have one; don't book a test for it.
What IELTS score is needed for FSU MS Biological Science?
IELTS 7.0 overall with at least 6.5 in speaking, which is higher than FSU's university minimum of 6.5. For TOEFL the department asks for 92 with 26 in speaking, or 5.0 with 5.0 in speaking on the scale used from 21 January 2026. Other tests, such as PTE, are considered only case by case.
What is the last date to apply for FSU MS Biological Science for Fall 2027?
The department's final date for the course-work MS is 1 June 2027 for Fall, and 1 November for Spring entry. Applications opened on 1 August 2026. The faculty review files after each deadline, so a June decision leaves little time for an I-20 and visa. Indian applicants should aim to submit by January.
Can I do MS Biological Science at FSU after a 3-year BSc?
FSU hasn't published a rule on three-year Indian degrees. It asks for a degree comparable to a US bachelor's with a 3.0 GPA on upper-division work, and a NACES course-by-course evaluation decides that. Get the evaluation done before you pay the application fee. A four-year BTech or BSc (Hons) is the safer case.
Is FSU MS Biological Science STEM designated for OPT?
Yes. The degree carries CIP code 26.0101, Biology/Biological Sciences, General, which is on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List updated in July 2024 and on FSU's own list of STEM majors. Graduates can apply for 12 months of OPT and then a 24-month STEM OPT extension on top of it.
Can I shift from the course-work MS to a PhD at FSU later?
Not directly. The department says there is no formal pathway from the course-work MS to its thesis MS or PhD, and that PhD-bound students are better served by those programmes from the start. You would have to apply to the PhD separately, for Fall entry, by the 1 December deadline, like any other applicant.
