What is the FSU MS Applied Economics?
It’s a one-year, 30-credit Master of Science from FSU’s Department of Economics that turns an economics or statistics graduate into a working analyst. Tuition comes to USD 38,453 at the Fall 2027 rate of USD 1,281.77 a credit. With fees, 13 months of living, insurance and visa costs, the bill is about INR 73.75 lakh.
Everyone starts together in late August and finishes in early August the next year. Fall carries 10 credit hours and spring 11, built on four core courses in applied micro and econometrics, and the 9-credit summer is a team consulting project on a Florida policy question. This page covers the Fall 2027 intake. The department hasn’t yet published anything cycle-specific for Fall 2027, so the dates here are the ones it publishes year to year.
How much does the FSU MS Applied Economics cost an Indian student?
Plan on USD 77,040, about INR 73.75 lakh, for the whole programme. Tuition at the Fall 2027 rate is only half of it. Because the course runs through summer, you pay rent from August 2027 to August 2028, which FSU’s nine-month budget doesn’t show.
| Item | INR | Local currency | When it is due |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tuition, 30 credits at USD 1,281.77 (Fall 2027 rate) | INR 36.81 lakh | USD 38,453.10 | Each semester, for credits taken |
| Facility fee USD 20 x 3 semesters, FSUCard USD 5 x 2 | INR 6,701 | USD 70 | Each semester |
| Living, 13 months at USD 2,545 (2026-27 budget) | INR 31.67 lakh | USD 33,085 | Monthly, August 2027 to August 2028 |
| Books and supplies, 3 semesters at USD 690 | INR 1.98 lakh | USD 2,070 | Start of each semester |
| FSU health insurance, one year (2026-27 premium) | INR 2.68 lakh | USD 2,797 | Billed automatically, no waiver |
| Application fee | INR 2,872 | USD 30 | When you apply |
| SEVIS I-901 fee | INR 33,506 | USD 350 | Before the visa interview |
| F-1 visa application fee | INR 17,710 | USD 185 | Before the visa interview |
| Full programme, all in | INR 73.75 lakh | USD 77,040.10 | August 2027 to August 2028 |
The I-20 needs proof of USD 49,944 on FSU's 2026 table, which is cash you show, not an extra cost, and it was built on an older, lower tuition rate. The law also sets a USD 250 visa integrity fee, but we couldn't confirm it's being collected on 24 September 2026, so it's left out. Converted at INR 95.7310 per USD, the FBIL reference rate for 23 September 2026 shown on rbi.org.in. Flights and housing deposits are excluded.
Tuition is simple arithmetic. FSU charges graduates by the credit hour, and the Board-approved rate for Fall 2027 entry is USD 1,281.77 for an out-of-state student, which every F-1 student is. Thirty credits gives USD 38,453.10. Graduate programmes carry no tuition differential, and the department publishes no fee of its own.
Living is where most budgets go wrong. FSU’s 2026-27 off-campus graduate budget is USD 22,906 for nine months, or USD 2,545 a month. This course has no summer break, since the capstone runs until 4 August 2028 on the FSU calendar, so we’ve counted 13 months from August arrival to August exit.
Health insurance isn’t optional any more. From 2026-27, every F-1 student is enrolled automatically in the FSU plan and can’t waive it for an Indian or cheaper US policy. The 2026-27 annual premium is USD 2,797, and the whole programme fits inside one policy year.
The I-20 figure needs care. FSU’s standard number assumes 18 credits a year, and this course packs 30 credits into 12 months. FSU lists its own higher figures for some business and law programmes, not this one. Ask the Center for Global Engagement what it will want to see before you arrange the loan or the bank letter.
The one-time costs are small but come early. The USD 30 application fee can’t be waived, and you pay it before FSU has looked at anything. The USD 350 SEVIS fee and the USD 185 visa fee come after the I-20 arrives, so all three leave your account before the first tuition bill does.
Funding can bring the number down, but don’t count on it. Kaul Scholars get up to USD 15,000 and the median one had a 3.8 upper-division GPA. Kaul Fellows get a tuition waiver and a stipend for 10 hours a week as a teaching assistant, and they often have 3.9. The department states the fellowship’s value only for in-state students, so ask what it’s worth to an international student before you plan around it.
Can an Indian student meet the FSU MS Applied Economics entry rules?
Yes, if your upper-division GPA converts to at least 3.2 and your transcript shows calculus, statistics, principles of economics and ideally intermediate micro, macro and econometrics. The GRE is waived. The department’s bar is higher than FSU’s university-wide 3.0, and no FSU page tells you how Indian marks convert.
| Requirement | Published rule | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor's degree (India) | Bachelor's degree or equivalent, comparable to a US degree | Get a course-by-course NACES evaluation before you pay the application fee |
| Upper-division GPA (India) | 3.2 on 4.0 minimum for this department; strong applicants 3.5 or higher | Ask the evaluator for your upper-division GPA, not your overall CGPA |
| Prior master's | 3.4 graduate GPA for any graduate work attempted | Include every postgraduate transcript, finished or not |
| Maths and statistics | One term of calculus and one term of statistics | Point to the exact subject names on your marksheets |
| Principles of economics | Principles of micro and macro before starting (2026-27 bulletin) | If your degree had none, take a credit-bearing course before August 2027 |
| Quantitative background | Intermediate micro, intermediate macro and econometrics, or substantial finance, maths, statistics or data science work | Aim for B+ grades in those three subjects |
| GRE | Waived by the department | Don't book it for this application |
| English test (India) | IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 80 or 4.0 on the new scale, PTE 55 | Send scores direct to FSU using code 5219 |
| Documents | Statement of purpose, 2 recommendations, resume, official transcripts | Ask economics professors for letters dated within the last year |
| I-20 funds (India) | USD 49,944 on FSU's 2026 table for 18 credits a year | Confirm the figure for a 30-credit year with the CGE |
The department’s own advice is blunt about who does well. Strong applicants, it says, have an upper-division GPA of 3.5 or more and at least a B+ in intermediate micro, intermediate macro and econometrics. That’s the profile to compare yourself against, not the 3.2 floor.
Your evaluation matters twice. It’s the document that proves your degree is comparable, and it’s the one that works out the upper-division GPA from the term in which you crossed 60 credits. FSU recommends The Evaluation Company, formerly SpanTran, but accepts any NACES member.
English is FSU’s university minimum, since the department sets nothing higher. India isn’t on the exempt-country list, so an English-medium degree doesn’t excuse you from the test. Scores older than two years aren’t accepted.
If you’ve started or finished a master’s in India, the department reads that too. It wants a 3.4 graduate GPA on any prior graduate work, which is a stricter bar than the undergraduate one. Leaving an unfinished MSc or MBA off the application doesn’t help, because the evaluation asks for every transcript.
The maths bar is modest on paper, one term of calculus and one of statistics, and business calculus counts. The harder part is the core itself. Applied Econometrics and Applied Microeconomics start in the first week, and the four core courses have to average 3.0 or you retake them.
The documents are standard, but the letters aren’t. The department prefers academic referees, ideally economics professors, and each letter has to speak to whether you can finish this specific programme. A letter from a manager at work is allowed but carries less weight here than it would for an MBA.
Five rules that decide Indian files
Clear 3.2, not the 3.0 you'll see elsewhere
FSU’s Graduate School asks for a 3.0 upper-division GPA. The Economics department sets its own, higher line:“Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) with a minimum 3.2 (on a 4.0 scale) grade point average in all coursework attempted while registered as an upper-division undergraduate student”FSU Department of Economics
FSU publishes no table that turns Indian percentages or CGPA into that number. The NACES evaluator works it out from your last two years of marks, so get the evaluation first and apply only if it shows 3.2 or more.A three-year degree isn't a yes or a no until the evaluation says so
No FSU page says whether a three-year Indian BA, BCom or BSc counts as comparable to a US bachelor’s, and the department is silent too. The Graduate School asks for a comparable degree and an official course-by-course evaluation from a NACES member. That evaluation decides it. Get it before you pay the USD 30 fee. A four-year degree, or a three-year degree followed by an Indian master’s, is the safer case.
Principles of economics sits only in the bulletin
The admissions page lists calculus and statistics. The 2026-27 Graduate Bulletin adds more:“MS in Applied Economics applicants are required to complete principles of macroeconomics and microeconomics, one term of calculus, and one term of statistics prior to starting the program.”FSU Graduate Bulletin 2026-27, Economics
An engineering or maths graduate with no economics on the transcript should fix this before August 2027, not after an offer.Don't plan on the spring internship
The spring elective is either the Applied Economics Internship or Applied Health Economics. An off-campus internship needs CPT, and FSU’s international office tightened CPT in August 2026:“The CGE will no longer approve training opportunities that are not required of every student in the same degree program.”FSU Center for Global Engagement
The same page bars CPT in your first academic year unless the bulletin requires the training. The internship is optional and falls in spring, so an F-1 student should plan on Applied Health Economics.Treat the STEM line on the funding page as wrong
The department’s financial support page says the programme is STEM. The office that issues your I-20 disagrees:“Please note that Applied Economics (45.0602) is not STEM eligible at this time.”FSU Center for Global Engagement
The DHS STEM list carries 45.0603 Econometrics and Quantitative Economics, not 45.0602. Budget for 12 months of OPT and nothing more.
When should you apply for the Fall 2027 FSU MS Applied Economics?
Aim to submit by 15 January 2027. That’s FSU’s priority date for international files, and it also beats the department’s 1 February funding line. The July 1 final deadline exists, but it’s rolling, space-dependent and too late for an August visa.
You apply once, online, through FSU's Graduate Admissions portal. The NACES evaluator sends your evaluated transcripts, the test agency sends scores, and your professors upload letters through an emailed link. The department decides admission and funding together. After an offer, the Center for Global Engagement issues the I-20, and then you book the visa.
| Start by | Task | Takes | Why this date |
|---|---|---|---|
| 14 Nov 2026 | Get the NACES course-by-course evaluation | 45 days | It fixes your upper-division GPA and whether the degree counts. Observed turnaround, not an FSU figure. |
| 28 Nov 2026 | Take IELTS, TOEFL or PTE | 45 days | Leave room for one retake and for scores to reach FSU. |
| 13 Dec 2026 | Ask two professors for letters | 30 days | Letters must be dated within a year of submission. |
| 29 Dec 2026 | Write the one-page statement and resume | 14 days | Written once the evaluation confirms you clear 3.2. |
| 12 Jan 2027 | Submit and pay the USD 30 fee | 3 days | FSU won't review the file until the evaluation arrives. |
The allowances are Nbyula planning estimates, not processing times published by Florida State University.
There are four hand-overs, and three of them sit outside FSU. The evaluator produces your transcripts, the test agency produces your scores, and two professors produce letters. FSU only starts reading once the evaluation reaches it.
Admission is for fall only and specific to the term. If you can’t join in August 2027, you apply again for 2028. There’s no spring entry to fall back on.
The timeline above starts with the evaluation for a reason. It takes the longest to arrive, it tells you whether you clear 3.2, and FSU won’t review a file with a non-US transcript until it’s in. Order it from The Evaluation Company or another NACES member as soon as your final-year marks are out.
Once you have an offer, the Center for Global Engagement asks for bank letters on letterhead, signed by a manager and dated within six months. With an August start, a US visa slot in May or June is the realistic target, which is another reason the July 1 date is no use to an Indian applicant.
The department considers every complete file received by 1 February for its scholarships and assistantships, with no separate form. After that date, funding is funds-available, and admission is rolling only if space is left.
What jobs and US work rights follow the FSU MS Applied Economics?
The department says over 90% of recent graduates were placed within three months, at a median of USD 80,000 to 90,000. It’s the department’s own figure, with no method or cohort size published. Your real limit as an Indian graduate is 12 months of OPT.
| Measure | Figure | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Placement within 3 months | Over 90% | Department claim for recent classes. No survey method, response rate or split for international graduates. |
| Median first-year pay | USD 80,000 to 90,000 | Department claim, same page, same caveats. |
| Economists, US median pay | USD 124,720 | BLS, May 2025, all experience levels. Bottom 10% earned under USD 67,360. |
| Market research analysts, US median | USD 78,760 | BLS, May 2025, all experience levels. |
| Economists in government | 49% | BLS: federal 26%, state 14%, local 9%. Federal competitive-service jobs need US citizenship. |
| Post-study work | 12 months OPT | CIP 45.0602 is not on the DHS STEM list, so no 24-month extension. |
| H-1B master's cap | 20,000 extra places | For US master's graduates, on top of the 65,000 cap. Lottery weighted by wage level. |
The two department figures are self-reported and cover all graduates. BLS figures are national occupation data for every experience level, not starting salaries for this programme.
The department names its graduates’ first jobs by class year, which few programmes do. The Class of 2025 went to Carnival Cruise Line, Charles River Associates, The Energy Authority, Newday USA and the Postal Regulatory Commission, among others. Charles River Associates and The Energy Authority turn up in almost every year from 2023 to 2026.
Read the list with your visa in mind. Most first jobs are in Florida, and several employers are government bodies such as FloridaCommerce, the Public Utility Commission of Texas and the US Air Force at Eglin. BLS puts 26% of US economists in the federal government, where competitive-service posts are closed to non-citizens. The consulting firms on the list are the realistic targets for an F-1 graduate.
The work-rights maths is short. You finish in August 2028 and get up to 12 months of OPT. That leaves one H-1B lottery, in March 2029, inside your OPT window. A STEM graduate gets up to three. The USD 100,000 H-1B payment is currently blocked by a court order and doesn’t apply to a change of status inside the US, but the proclamation was renewed in September 2026.
Career Day runs each fall and spring, with firms such as Berkeley Research Group, Charles River Associates, Mather Economics and Resolution Economics recruiting for internships and full-time roles. For an Indian student, it’s the full-time hiring that counts, since the internship route is closed by the CPT rule.
How is Florida State University ranked?
Ranking is context here, not an admission rule. We found no verified QS or THE economics subject position for FSU, so these are the overall tables. Neither measures this one-year applied programme, and the department's own placement list says more about your job prospects.
| Publisher | Position | Table and year |
|---|---|---|
| QS | #549 | World University Rankings 2026, overall |
| Times Higher Education | 301 to 350 | World University Rankings 2026, overall |
Who should apply to the FSU MS Applied Economics, and who shouldn't?
It suits an economics or quantitative graduate with a strong GPA who wants a job as an analyst quickly and can accept a year of OPT. It doesn’t suit anyone who needs STEM OPT, a spring start, or a route into a PhD.
| Verdict | Your background | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Strong fit | BA or BSc Economics with 3.5 or better upper-division GPA and B+ in econometrics | You match the department's own description of a strong applicant, and Kaul Scholarship money is decided on the same file. |
| Strong fit | Four-year BTech or BSc Maths or Statistics graduate who has taken principles of economics | The admissions page accepts substantial maths, statistics or data science work in place of intermediate economics. |
| Needs evidence | Three-year BCom or BA with 65% to 70% | Both the degree's comparability and a 3.2 conversion depend on the NACES evaluation, which FSU doesn't predict. |
| Needs evidence | Applicant who wants to stay in the US for several years | Twelve months of OPT gives one H-1B lottery. Workable, but a STEM degree gives three chances. |
| Do not shortlist | Anyone planning a PhD in economics next | The bulletin calls this a terminal degree, not preparation for a doctorate. |
| Do not shortlist | Engineer with no economics coursework at all | Principles of micro and macro are required before you start, and the core assumes intermediate theory. |
The honest test is your transcript and your visa plan together. A strong economics graduate who wants two or three years of US experience before coming home will find the OPT limit tight but workable. Someone chasing long-term US settlement is better served by a STEM-coded degree.
The three-year BCom or BA case is the one we’d check first in a counselling call. It isn’t a rejection, but two things have to go right, the evaluation has to treat the degree as comparable and it has to produce 3.2 from your final years. If either fails, a one-year Indian master’s first can change the answer.
What will you study in the FSU MS Applied Economics?
The department publishes a fixed one-year sequence of 30 credit hours, 10 in fall, 11 in spring and 9 in summer. Four core courses carry a 3.0 GPA requirement between them, and the summer consulting project is worth 6 credits.
Published course sequence
| Code | Component | Credit hours | Where it sits |
|---|---|---|---|
| ECO 5114 | Applied Microeconomics I | 3 | Fall, core |
| ECO 5420 | Applied Econometrics | 3 | Fall, core |
| ECO 5417 | Programming for Economists | 3 | Fall elective, Python, SAS, SQL |
| ECO 5922 | Professional Development | 1 | Fall |
| ECO 5117 | Applied Microeconomics II | 3 | Spring, core |
| ECO 5434 | Analysis of Economic Data | 3 | Spring, core |
| ECP 5537 | Applied Health Economics | 3 | Spring elective, the F-1 choice |
| ECO 5942 | Applied Economics Internship | 3 | Spring elective, needs CPT |
| ECO 5xxx | Economic Evaluation for Policy and Evaluation | 1 | Spring |
| ECO 5922 | Professional Development | 1 | Spring |
| ECO 5973 | Applied Master's Project | 6 | Summer, team consulting capstone |
| ECO 5xxx | Machine Learning in Applied Economics | 3 | Summer elective |
| Total | 30 |
- The four core courses must average a 3.0 GPA.
- You take one of the two spring electives, not both, so the sequence totals 30 credit hours.
- A thesis route (6 credits of ECO 5971 with an oral defence) exists in the bulletin in place of the project.
- Students with enough econometrics may swap in the PhD sequence, ECO 5416 and ECO 5423, with the director's approval.
The capstone is graded like a job. Instructors act as senior partners, teams write a 50-page report, and a third of the grade is your associate performance. Only teams with a B or better on the internal presentation present to the outside panel at the July symposium.
Past projects are almost all Florida policy questions, from data centres and short-term rentals in 2026 to Medicaid and trade policy in earlier years. The linked Fall 2025 programming syllabus carries the code ECO 5418, not the ECO 5417 on the course page, so check the code at registration.
Should you shortlist the FSU MS Applied Economics?
Shortlist it if you have a 3.2 or better upper-division GPA, you’ve done intermediate economics and econometrics, and you can live with only 12 months of US work after it. The department’s own GPA bar sits above the Graduate School’s, and the transcript evaluation decides whether you clear it.
What you get is speed and a very applied year. Twelve months, a small cohort of about 21 graduates a year, Python, SAS and SQL in the first term, and a capstone graded like a consulting job. What it costs you is choice. There's no spring entry, no part-time route and no way to stretch the year to buy time for a job search.
Two things are genuinely hard here. FSU's Center for Global Engagement lists this degree under CIP 45.0602, which isn't on the DHS STEM list, so you get 12 months of OPT and no 24-month extension, even though one department page calls it STEM. And the placement record leans on Florida employers and government bodies, while federal competitive-service jobs need US citizenship. If your plan depends on three years of US work, look at a STEM economics or analytics degree instead.
Decision checksthe full cost · the 3.2 GPA and prerequisites · the January priority date · the OPT limit
- The FSU MS Applied Economics is 30 credit hours over one year, starting late August 2027 and ending 4 August 2028.
- The full programme costs about USD 77,040, or INR 73.75 lakh, with 13 months of living included.
- The department wants a 3.2 upper-division GPA, above FSU's 3.0 floor, and says strong applicants have 3.5.
- FSU's international office lists the degree as CIP 45.0602, not STEM, so graduates get 12 months of OPT only.
- Complete files by 1 February 2027 are considered for Kaul Scholarships of up to USD 15,000 without a separate form.
- The department reports over 90% placement within three months, a self-reported figure with no published method.
Frequently asked questions
What is the total cost of MS Applied Economics at FSU for Indian students?
About INR 73.75 lakh, or USD 77,040, for the full year from August 2027 to August 2028. That covers 30 credits at the Fall 2027 rate of USD 1,281.77, 13 months of living, books, FSU's compulsory health insurance, the application fee, SEVIS and the visa fee. Flights and deposits are extra.
Is FSU MS Applied Economics a STEM course?
No. FSU's Center for Global Engagement says Applied Economics, CIP 45.0602, is not STEM eligible, and the DHS STEM list doesn't include that code. One department page calls it STEM, but the international office decides your OPT. Plan on 12 months of OPT with no 24-month extension.
Is GRE required for MS Applied Economics at Florida State University?
No. The Department of Economics says the GRE requirement has been waived for this programme. An older 2024-25 bulletin page still mentions GRE scores of 148, but the current admissions page and the 2026-27 bulletin don't require the test. You'll still need an English score such as IELTS 6.5.
What GPA do I need for FSU MS Applied Economics?
A 3.2 on 4.0 upper-division GPA, which is higher than FSU's university-wide 3.0. The department says strong applicants have 3.5 or more and at least B+ in intermediate micro, macro and econometrics. FSU publishes no Indian percentage conversion, so your NACES evaluation decides the number.
When is the deadline for the Fall 2027 intake?
Submit by 15 January 2027, FSU's priority date for international applicants. The department's own priority date is 1 February 2027, which is also the cutoff for automatic scholarship consideration. The 1 July final deadline is rolling and space-dependent, and it leaves too little time for an I-20 and visa.
Can I do an internship during the FSU Applied Economics master's?
Probably not off campus. The spring internship is optional, and since August 2026 FSU only approves CPT for training every student in the degree must do. CPT is also barred in the first academic year. Indian students should plan on the Applied Health Economics elective instead.
Does FSU accept a three-year Indian degree for MS Applied Economics?
FSU doesn't say yes or no. It asks for a degree comparable to a US bachelor's, judged by a NACES course-by-course evaluation, and the department adds nothing more. Get the evaluation before paying the application fee. A four-year degree, or a three-year degree plus a master's, is the safer case.
