What is the FSU MS Computational Science?
The MS in Computational Science is a 30-credit, two-year master’s from FSU’s Department of Scientific Computing in Tallahassee, built for maths, physics and engineering graduates who want to write scientific software. Since the department says every MS student is self-pay, the full two years come to about INR 99.05 lakh on our costing.
The degree is numerical methods, scientific programming and high-performance computing, with a thesis or a defended project at the end and six credits taken in another department. This page covers the Fall 2027 intake. FSU hasn’t yet published its Fall 2027 I-20 funding table or the 2027-28 insurance premium, so both figures here carry their 2026 labels.
How much does the FSU MS Computational Science cost in rupees?
Plan for about INR 99.05 lakh, or USD 103,462, for the full two years. Tuition at FSU’s Fall 2027 rate of USD 1,281.77 a credit is only about 37% of that. Living is the biggest line, and the compulsory health plan adds INR 5.36 lakh. No scholarship or waiver is open to MS students in this department.
| Item | INR | Local currency | When it is due |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tuition, 30 credits, plus facility and FSUCard fees | INR 36.91 lakh | USD 38,553.10 | Billed each semester |
| Living, 22 months at FSU's graduate budget | INR 53.60 lakh | USD 55,990 | Monthly, August 2027 to May 2029 |
| Books and supplies, four semesters | INR 2.64 lakh | USD 2,760 | Start of each semester |
| FSU student health insurance, two plan years | INR 5.36 lakh | USD 5,594 | August 2027 and August 2028 |
| Application fee, SEVIS I-901 and visa fee | INR 54,088 | USD 565 | Before the visa interview |
| Total, Fall 2027 to Spring 2029 | INR 99.05 lakh | USD 103,462.10 | Across 22 months |
The I-20 asks you to show USD 49,944 for the first year on FSU's 2026 table, which is money you prove, not an extra cost, and it stays yours. The visa integrity fee is in US law but we couldn't confirm on 24 September 2026 that it's being collected. Converted at INR 95.7310 per USD, the FBIL reference rate for 23 September 2026 shown on the RBI website. Flights, housing deposits and the USD 250 visa integrity fee are left out.
The tuition line is 30 credits multiplied by USD 1,281.77, which is FSU’s out-of-state graduate rate for students starting in Fall 2027 after the Board of Trustees approved higher local fees on 28 August 2026. The 2026-27 rate is USD 1,278.04. On top of that come a USD 20 facility fee and a USD 5 FSUCard fee in each of the four semesters.
Living uses FSU’s own off-campus graduate budget of USD 22,906 for nine months, which works out to USD 2,545 a month. We apply it to every month from August 2027 to May 2029, including the summer of 2028, because you still pay rent in Tallahassee when there are no classes.
Health cover isn’t optional. From 2026-27 every F-1 student is automatically enrolled in the FSU plan with no waiver, at USD 2,797 for the 2026-27 plan year. A two-year programme starts two plan years.
Two things move the total. If you finish in December 2028 by taking 12 credits in your third semester, you save about five months of living, roughly INR 12.18 lakh. And every credit above 30 costs another INR 1.23 lakh, which matters because the handbook’s own FAQ still mentions a 36-credit degree.
Don’t count on a teaching assistantship. The handbook describes TA posts with a stipend and tuition waiver, but the Fall 2027 admissions page says all MS students pay their own way, and FSU reserves out-of-state waivers for assistants and fellows. For an Indian family that means a loan or savings covering the whole INR 99 lakh.
Can an Indian student get into FSU's MS Computational Science?
Yes, with a maths, physical science or engineering bachelor’s, a 3.0 upper-division GPA, working C/C++ or Fortran, a GRE score and IELTS 6.5 or an accepted equivalent. The Graduate Bulletin adds a letter of intent, a CV and three recommendation letters that the programme page never mentions.
| Requirement | Published rule | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor's subject | Maths, physical sciences or engineering on the programme page; the bulletin also names computer science, statistics and computational science | Check your degree title sits in that list before paying anything |
| Three-year degree (India) | No department statement; FSU asks for a degree comparable to a US bachelor's, decided by a NACES course-by-course evaluation | Get the evaluation done before you pay the application fee |
| Grade minimum (India) | 3.0 on a 4.0 scale across upper-division work, counted from the term of your 60th credit hour | Ask the evaluator for the upper-division GPA, not only the overall one |
| Programming | Working knowledge of C/C++ or Fortran 90 in the handbook; at least one object-oriented language in the bulletin | Show a graded C, C++ or Fortran course on the transcript or a project in the CV |
| GRE General | Required as of December 2025 per the March 2026 handbook; the department FAQ still says not required | Sit the GRE and send it to FSU code 5219 |
| Credential evaluation (India) | Course-by-course evaluation from The Evaluation Company or any NACES member | Order it early and send marksheets plus the degree or provisional certificate |
| English test (India) | IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 80 before 21 January 2026 or 4.0 on the new scale, PTE 55; India is not exempt | Book IELTS or TOEFL; the department FAQ calls TOEFL above 80 competitive |
| Department documents | Letter of intent, CV, three recommendation letters and the departmental supplemental form | Line up three referees who can speak to your maths and coding |
| I-20 funds (India) | USD 49,944 for the first year on FSU's 2026 table, bank letters dated within six months | Arrange a loan sanction or bank letter in that amount before the I-20 request |
| Deadline | 30 April 2027 for international applicants to the department | Submit by 15 January 2027 instead, the Graduate School's international priority date |
India isn’t on FSU’s English-exemption list, and an English-medium Indian degree doesn’t count. The department’s own page mentions only TOEFL, but it defers to the Graduate School, which accepts IELTS 6.5 and PTE 55 as well. Duolingo 125 appears in the 2026-27 bulletin but not on the Graduate School’s international page, so confirm it in writing before booking it.
FSU doesn’t publish a percentage or CGPA conversion. The evaluator converts your marks to a 4.0 scale, and the 3.0 minimum applies to the upper-division years only, which helps a student whose first-year marks were weak.
Six rules that cost Indian applicants this programme
Take the GRE, even though one department page says you needn't
The department’s current handbook, revised in March 2026 for students entering from Fall 2026, says:“As of December 2025, we require the general GRE examination.”FSU Department of Scientific Computing, Graduate Handbook, March 2026
Its undated FAQ page still answers “No. Taking the GRE is no longer required for admission.” FSU’s Graduate School has no university-wide GRE rule for master’s, but it lets departments add one, and this department has. Plan on the GRE unless the department waives it for you in writing.Budget as self-pay, because the Fall 2027 page says every MS student is
The handbook says the department will support a master’s student on a TA for up to two academic years, and the financial aid page says assistantships are available to qualified applicants. The dated page overrides both:“All Master of Science (M.S.) students are self-pay”FSU Department of Scientific Computing, Fall 2027 admission deadlines
Treat any funding after arrival as a surprise, not a plan.Don't wait for 30 April; file by 15 January
The department accepts international applications until 30 April 2027. After that FSU still has to admit you, issue the I-20 against your funds proof, and you need a US visa slot in India before an August start. That leaves roughly three months for steps that routinely take longer. The Graduate School’s international priority date is 15 January, and that’s the date we’d work to.
Let the evaluator, not an agent, answer the three-year degree question
No FSU or department page says whether a three-year BSc counts. FSU asks for a degree comparable to a US bachelor’s and decides it from a NACES course-by-course evaluation. A four-year BE, BTech or BS is the safe case. A three-year BSc followed by an Indian MSc fits FSU’s graduate-degree route on the rule’s wording. With a three-year BSc alone, get the evaluation before you pay the USD 30 fee.
Show C, C++ or Fortran on paper, not only Python
The handbook footnote asks for working knowledge of C/C++ or Fortran 90. The core course ISC 5305 Scientific Programming assumes it. A transcript with only Python or MATLAB is weaker here than it would be for FSU’s data science degree. If your coding is self-taught, put a C++ project with a public repository on your CV and name it in the letter of intent.
Plan 30 credits, not the 36 in the handbook's FAQ
The handbook’s degree section and the Graduate Bulletin both set the MS at 30 credit hours, including 2 seminar credits. The same handbook’s FAQ talks about “21 of the 36 credit hours” and four seminar credits. Six extra credits would add about INR 7.36 lakh. Get your Program of Study signed at 30 in your first year so the number is fixed.
How and when should you apply for Fall 2027?
There are four hand-overs outside the department: ETS for the GRE, the English test board, a NACES evaluator and your referees. The department’s international deadline is 30 April 2027, but we plan backwards from the Graduate School’s 15 January 2027 priority date so the I-20 and visa aren’t squeezed.
You apply once, through FSU's graduate application portal, and pay USD 30. The department's supplemental form then appears in your checklist. The department recommends admission, the Graduate School issues the offer, and FSU's Center for Global Engagement issues the I-20 once your funds proof is accepted. The visa interview in India comes last.
| Start by | Task | Takes | Why this date |
|---|---|---|---|
| 17 Jan 2027 | Prepare and sit the GRE General | 75 days | Preparation plus the official score reaching FSU under code 5219. |
| 09 Mar 2027 | Sit IELTS or TOEFL | 45 days | Scores must go straight from the test body and are valid for two years. |
| 09 Mar 2027 | Order the NACES course-by-course evaluation | 45 days | FSU won't review a non-US degree until the evaluation arrives; observed turnaround, not published. |
| 24 Mar 2027 | Brief three referees | 30 days | Three recommendation letters are requested by the department. |
| 02 Apr 2027 | Write the letter of intent and CV | 21 days | Name your C/C++ or Fortran work and the research area you want. |
| 23 Apr 2027 | Submit the FSU application and supplemental form | 7 days | Pay the USD 30 fee; the department form should appear within two business days. |
The allowances are Nbyula planning estimates, not processing times published by Florida State University.
The department lists no Spring 2027 deadline for this degree, only Fall 2027 dates, so plan on an August start. Transcripts count as official only when they come from the institution or through the evaluator. Copies you upload yourself are for review only.
An application complete on 30 April still needs an admission decision, a funds check and an I-20 posted to you before you can pay the USD 350 SEVIS fee and book a visa interview for an August start. FSU says admission is term specific, so missing August means reapplying for a later term, not deferring.
What jobs do FSU MS Computational Science graduates get?
FSU publishes no placement rate or salary for this master’s. The department’s job placements list names employers its graduates joined, including Oak Ridge and Lawrence Berkeley national laboratories for MS holders, but the list is undated and has no counts. The degree is STEM-designated, so OPT can run 36 months in total.
| Measure | Figure | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Programme placement rate | Not published | Checked the programme, application, handbook, jobs and Career Center pages on 24 September 2026. |
| Employers named for MS holders | 15 organisations | Department list, undated, no counts. Includes Oak Ridge and Lawrence Berkeley national labs, US EPA, Nokia, Sony PlayStation, Lowe's, Johns Hopkins and Carnegie Mellon. |
| MS degrees awarded, 2024-25 | 4 | FSU Fact Book 2025-26, CIP 30.3001. The cohort is tiny. |
| US median pay, research scientists | USD 140,300 | BLS, computer and information research scientists, May 2025, all US workers. Not an FSU figure. |
| OPT with STEM extension | 12 + 24 months | CIP 30.3001 is on the DHS STEM list dated 22 July 2024. You must hold a job with an E-Verify employer. |
| H-1B master's cap | 20,000 extra | US master's holders get a separate pool, but selection is now weighted by the offered wage level. |
The employer list shows where some graduates went, not how many or when. The BLS figure is national pay for an occupation this degree feeds, not an FSU outcome.
The Graduate Bulletin frames this MS for people whose goal is to be part of a research team in a non-academic setting, and the employer list matches that. National labs, a federal agency and a few engineering and tech firms sit beside universities, which suggests many MS holders went on to further study or research posts.
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts median pay for computer and information research scientists at USD 140,300 in May 2025 and projects 22% growth from 2025 to 2035. It also says the job needs at least a master’s. Use that as the ceiling of the market this degree aims at, not as a starting salary.
On the visa side, a US master’s lets your employer enter you in the extra 20,000-place H-1B pool. The USD 100,000 H-1B payment doesn’t apply when an employer changes your status inside the US and USCIS grants it, and a court order has blocked its collection since June 2026. A separate proposed fee could still reach in-US cases if it’s finalised.
How is FSU ranked for computational science?
Neither QS nor Times Higher Education ranks computational science as its own subject. The nearest THE subject tables place FSU 201 to 250 in Physical Sciences and 501 to 600 in Computer Science for 2026. Rankings are context for a shortlist, not an admission rule, and they say nothing about funding or jobs.
| Publisher | Position | Table and year |
|---|---|---|
| Times Higher Education | 201 to 250 | Physical Sciences 2026, subject |
| Times Higher Education | 501 to 600 | Computer Science 2026, subject |
| Times Higher Education | 301 to 350 | World University Rankings 2026, overall |
| QS | #549 | World University Rankings 2026, overall |
Who should apply to FSU's MS Computational Science, and who shouldn't?
It suits a maths, physics or engineering graduate who already writes C++ or Fortran, wants simulation or HPC work, and can fund two years alone. It doesn't suit anyone who needs a teaching assistantship, or a CS or IT graduate after a general software job, who'd get more electives in FSU's MS Computer Science.
| Verdict | Your background | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Strong fit | BTech, BE or MSc in physics, maths or engineering with C++ or Fortran coursework | Matches the stated entry subjects and the coding the core course assumes. |
| Strong fit | Graduate aiming at FSU's Computational Science PhD | The MS is the in-flight route; a 3.2 GPA and the preliminary exam move you across. |
| Needs evidence | Three-year BSc graduate with no Indian MSc | Comparability is decided by the NACES evaluation, and no department rule says either way. |
| Needs evidence | CS or IT graduate who wants numerical and HPC depth | Admissible, but compare the elective list with FSU's MS Computer Science first. |
| Do not shortlist | Anyone who needs a TA or tuition waiver to afford the US | The Fall 2027 page says every MS student is self-pay. |
| Do not shortlist | Python-only analyst aiming at a data science job | The core needs C/C++ or Fortran; FSU's data science MS fits that goal better. |
The clearest yes is a mechanical, aerospace or physics graduate who has written finite-difference or finite-element code in C++ or Fortran and wants a research or lab role. The course list, from numerical PDEs to Monte Carlo methods, is built for that person.
The clearest no is a family relying on assistantship money. Two years at about INR 99 lakh, with no funded route, is the same outlay as FSU’s larger computer science master’s, which has more electives and more employers recruiting from it.
What do you study in the FSU MS Computational Science?
Thirty credits in five blocks: two core courses worth 7 credits, 9 credits of ISC electives, 6 credits from another department, 2 seminar credits, and 6 credits of thesis or extra coursework for the project route. The core assumes you already code, which is why the entry check asks for C/C++ or Fortran.
| Code | Component | Credit hours | Where it sits |
|---|---|---|---|
| ISC 5305 | Scientific Programming | 3 | Group A core, letter grade |
| ISC 5315 | Applied Computational Science I | 4 | Group A core, letter grade |
| Group B | Computational science electives with the ISC prefix | 9 | Letter grade; at most 3 credits of directed study |
| Group C | Application courses from other departments | 6 | Graduate level; at most 3 credits not letter graded |
| ISC 5934 | Introductory Seminar on Research in Computational Science | 2 | 1 credit, taken twice |
| ISC 5975 | Thesis, or 6 more coursework credits on the project route | 6 | Defended to a three-member committee |
| Total | 30 |
- Choose a major professor by the end of your second semester
- File the Program of Study by your third semester
- Keep a 3.0 GPA or face probation, then dismissal after one more term
- Present your thesis or project at the Computational Expo in year two
Group B electives published by the department include Numerical Partial Differential Equations, Markov Chain Monte Carlo, Molecular Dynamics, Multiscale Modeling of Materials, Scientific Visualization, High-Performance Computing, Verification and Validation, Bioinformatics and Machine Learning. Not every course runs every term.
In Fall 2026 the department ran four 3-credit graduate electives, namely Monte Carlo Method, Computational Evolutionary Biology, Forensic Analysis for Reliable Computing and AI Methods and Applications, alongside ISC 5305 and the 4-credit ISC 5315. Pick your research area with that narrow list in mind.
Should an Indian student shortlist FSU's MS Computational Science?
Shortlist it if you already program in C, C++ or Fortran, hold a maths, physics or engineering degree, and can pay about INR 99 lakh without an assistantship, and only then. The department’s Fall 2027 admissions page says all MS students are self-pay, so the money question is settled before admission.
What you get is a small, research-flavoured department. FSU awarded 4 master's degrees in Computational Science in 2024-25, and the department had 23 graduate students across MS and PhD in Fall 2025. That means real contact with faculty who run simulation and HPC research, a thesis option, and an in-flight route into the PhD if you keep a 3.2 GPA and pass the preliminary exam. The price is a narrow menu. Only four 3-credit ISC graduate electives ran in Fall 2026, so you can't build a broad industry curriculum here.
Two things are genuinely hard here. First, the department's own pages disagree on the GRE and on funding, and the version that costs you more is the one we'd plan around. Second, this is two years of full fees with no funded route for a master's student, which puts it level with FSU's MS Computer Science on price while offering a far smaller elective list and fewer named employers. If you need a TA to make the numbers work, or you want a general software or data job, this isn't the right programme for you.
Decision checkscost · entry rules · deadline · jobs evidence
- The FSU MS Computational Science costs about INR 99.05 lakh, or USD 103,462, for two years including living and insurance.
- The department's Fall 2027 page says all MS students are self-pay, so no assistantship should be in your budget.
- The March 2026 department handbook requires the GRE General test, even though an older FAQ page says it doesn't.
- International applications close on 30 April 2027, but filing by 15 January 2027 leaves time for the I-20 and visa.
- FSU awarded only 4 master's degrees in Computational Science in 2024-25, so expect a very small class.
- CIP code 30.3001 is on the DHS STEM list, so graduates can apply for 24 more months of OPT after the first 12.
Frequently asked questions
What is the total cost of MS Computational Science at FSU for Indian students?
About INR 99.05 lakh, or USD 103,462, for the two-year programme starting Fall 2027. That covers 30 credits at USD 1,281.77 each, 22 months of living at FSU's graduate budget, books, two years of compulsory FSU health insurance, the application fee, SEVIS and the visa fee, converted at INR 95.7310 per dollar.
Is the GRE required for FSU MS Computational Science?
Yes, on the department's current rules. Its Graduate Handbook, revised in March 2026, says the general GRE has been required since December 2025. An older department FAQ page says it isn't. Sit the GRE and send scores to FSU code 5219 unless the department waives it for you in writing.
Can I get a scholarship or assistantship for this FSU master's?
Don't plan on one. The department's Fall 2027 admissions page says all Master of Science students are self-pay, even though its handbook still describes teaching assistantships. FSU reserves out-of-state tuition waivers for graduate assistants and fellows, so an Indian MS student should budget the full cost from loans or savings.
What is the application deadline for Fall 2027?
The department's deadline for international applicants is 30 April 2027. FSU's Graduate School has an international priority date of 15 January, and we'd file by then. An April application leaves little time for the admission decision, the I-20, the SEVIS payment and a US visa interview before classes start in August.
Does FSU accept a three-year BSc for MS Computational Science?
Neither FSU nor the department says. FSU asks for a degree comparable to a US bachelor's with a 3.0 upper-division GPA, and a NACES course-by-course evaluation decides comparability. A four-year BE, BTech or BS is the safe case. A three-year BSc graduate should get the evaluation before paying the application fee.
Which programming language do I need for FSU Computational Science?
The department's handbook expects working knowledge of C/C++ or Fortran 90, and the Graduate Bulletin asks for at least one object-oriented language. The core course ISC 5305 Scientific Programming builds on that. Python alone is a weak signal here, so show a C++ or Fortran course or project on your transcript or CV.
Is FSU MS Computational Science a STEM degree for OPT?
Yes. The department gives its CIP code as 30.3001, which is on the Department of Homeland Security's STEM Designated Degree Program List dated 22 July 2024. Graduates can use 12 months of OPT and then apply for a 24-month STEM extension while working for an E-Verify employer.
How is this different from FSU's MS in Data Science?
The Data Science degree is a separate MS in Interdisciplinary Data Science, even though the department's page lists it as a track. It follows standard university deadlines and centres on statistics and machine learning. Computational Science centres on numerical methods, scientific programming in C/C++ or Fortran, and high-performance computing, with a thesis or project.
