What is the FSU Master of Accounting, and what does it cost an Indian student?
FSU’s Master of Accounting is a 30-credit, three-term, STEM-coded degree at the Herbert Wertheim College of Business in Tallahassee. The college quotes USD 38,341.20 for out-of-state students, but that’s tuition only at the 2026-27 rate. With living, insurance and visa costs, a Fall 2027 entrant should plan for about INR 73.75 lakh.
You pick one of three majors, Assurance and Advisory Services, Generalist or Taxation, and take ten 3-credit courses, usually four in fall, four in spring and two in summer. This page is written for Fall 2027 entry, which runs from 23 August 2027 to 4 August 2028. FSU hasn’t yet published its Fall 2027 I-20 funding table or 2027-28 insurance premiums, so those two figures carry their 2026 values.
How much does the FSU Master of Accounting cost in rupees, all in?
Plan for INR 73.75 lakh, or USD 77,040.10, for the full thirteen months. Tuition is half of it. The college’s USD 38,341.20 figure uses the 2026-27 rate and leaves out flat fees, books, living, insurance and visa costs, so it’s the floor, not the budget.
Full programme, August 2027 to August 2028
| Item | INR | Local currency | When it is due |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tuition, 30 credit hours at USD 1,281.77 | INR 36.81 lakh | USD 38,453.10 | Each term, fall, spring and summer |
| Facility fee for 3 terms, FSUCard fee for 2 | INR 7,000 | USD 70 | With each term's bill |
| Living, 13 months at USD 2,545 | INR 31.67 lakh | USD 33,085 | Monthly, August 2027 to August 2028 |
| Books and supplies, 3 terms at USD 690 | INR 1.98 lakh | USD 2,070 | Start of each term |
| FSU health insurance, one annual plan | INR 2.68 lakh | USD 2,797 | Billed automatically in fall |
| Application USD 30, SEVIS USD 350, visa USD 185 | INR 54,000 | USD 565 | Before you travel |
| Full programme, Fall 2027 entry | INR 73.75 lakh | USD 77,040.10 | Across the programme |
For the I-20, FSU's 2026 table asks MAcc students to show USD 64,051, well above the USD 49,944 for an ordinary 18-credit master's, because 30 credits and a summer fit inside one year. That's proof of funds, and the money stays yours. The USD 250 visa integrity fee is in US law, but no fee schedule we could read on 24 September 2026 shows it being collected, so it isn't in the total. Converted at INR 95.7310 per USD, the FBIL reference rate for 23 September 2026 on the RBI website. Flights and the visa integrity fee are excluded.
Tuition uses USD 1,281.77 per credit hour, the out-of-state graduate rate FSU’s trustees approved on 28 August 2026 for Fall 2027, Spring 2028 and Summer 2028. All three of your terms sit inside that rate, so the only change from the college’s figure is USD 3.73 a credit, or USD 111.90 across the programme.
Living comes from FSU’s own 2026-27 off-campus budget for graduate students, USD 22,906 for nine months, spread at USD 2,545 a month. A Fall entrant is in Tallahassee from August 2027 until the summer term ends on 4 August 2028, which makes thirteen months, and summer is when many budgets forget rent.
From 2026-27 every F-1 student is enrolled in FSU’s health plan automatically, with no waiver for an Indian or cheaper US policy. One annual premium of USD 2,797 runs from 15 August to 14 August, which covers the whole programme. The 2027-28 premium wasn’t out when we checked.
The department’s own fellowships are USD 1,500 a year, so they barely dent this figure. Assistantships pay a stipend for 10 hours a week and carry a tuition waiver, but the 2026-27 handbook calls it an in-state tuition waiver, and it says nothing about the out-of-state fee, which is most of your bill. Ask in writing what an offer covers before you count it.
Can an Indian B.Com or CA get into the FSU MAcc?
Only after your coursework matches FSU’s prerequisite list, and that’s where most Indian files stop. The department wants seven business courses and six accounting courses, with the accounting ones taught to US GAAP, US GAAS and US tax law. GMAT and GRE are optional. IELTS 7.0 is the English bar.
| Requirement | Published rule | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor's degree (India) (India) | A US bachelor's or a comparable international degree | Order the NACES course-by-course evaluation before paying the USD 30 fee |
| Three-year B.Com (India) (India) | No FSU or department statement either way; the evaluation decides comparability | Email the Graduate Programs Office with your evaluation and get the answer in writing |
| Upper-division GPA (India) | 3.0 on 4.0 in all upper-division work attempted, from the term of your 60th credit hour | Let the evaluator calculate it, FSU publishes no percentage or CGPA table |
| Backlogs (India) (India) | Every attempt counts, because FSU averages all work attempted | Ask the evaluator to show failed and cleared papers separately |
| Business prerequisites | Business analytics, business communications, corporate finance, micro, macro, quantitative methods, spreadsheets | Match each one to a named paper on your marksheet |
| Accounting prerequisites | Financial accounting I and II, cost, accounting information systems, auditing, federal taxation I, all US-standard | Check whether any paper actually taught US GAAP, US GAAS or US tax |
| Credential evaluation | NACES member, course by course, before FSU reviews the file | Pick an evaluator the Florida Board also approves if you want a CPA licence |
| GMAT or GRE | Optional; if sent, it's used in the decision | Send it only at or above the 50th percentile, as the college advises |
| English (India) (India) | IELTS 7.0, TOEFL 5.0 new scale or 600 paper, PTE 66, Cambridge 180, Michigan 55 | Book IELTS or TOEFL, Duolingo is listed only through Fall 2026 |
| Letters and statement | Three recommendation letters, an applicant statement and a dated CV | Pick a professor who taught your accounting papers |
| I-20 funds (India) | USD 64,051 for the MAcc on FSU's 2026 table | Arrange bank letters for that figure, not the USD 49,944 general one |
The prerequisite list is the whole story for most Indian applicants. Seven business courses are easy to match on a B.Com or BBA transcript. The six accounting courses aren’t, because the page ties them to US standards, and an Indian Financial Accounting paper taught to Ind AS doesn’t become US GAAP by name.
A Chartered Accountant has more accounting than most FSU applicants, but the CA papers still teach Indian law and standards. We couldn’t find any FSU statement on how the department treats CA Inter or CA Final, so ask with your marksheets rather than assume.
Even after admission, missing US courses cost you choice. Students without a US advanced financial accounting course and a US corporate tax course take ACG 5216 and TAX 5015 in place of the two non-accounting electives, which is nearly every Indian entrant.
Seven rules that reject Indian MAcc files
Indian accounting papers won't clear the prerequisite list
FSU is specific about what counts.“Accounting prerequisite coursework must be based on U.S. accounting standards (U.S. GAAP, U.S. GAAS, and U.S. tax laws).”FSU Master of Accounting
A B.Com teaches Ind AS, Indian auditing standards and Indian income tax. The department’s answer is to take the missing courses first as a non-degree or second-degree student, which you can’t do from India. Before spending on anything else, send the Graduate Programs Office your marksheets and ask which of the six accounting courses they’d accept. The old conversion route for non-accountants has been taken off the page
A 2022 brochure described a MAcc for non-accounting majors, with 51 credit hours of foundation courses before the 30 graduate ones. The live programme page still carries the link, but inside hidden code, so readers don’t see it. The page now says applicants without an FSU accounting degree“must have completed the prerequisite coursework … before the applicant can be considered for admission”FSU Master of Accounting
Don’t plan on the brochure route unless the department confirms it in writing.A three-year B.Com is decided by the evaluation, not by any FSU promise
FSU asks for a degree comparable to a US bachelor’s and a 3.0 upper-division GPA, and it reads both off a NACES course-by-course evaluation. Neither the Graduate School nor the accounting department says whether a three-year Indian degree qualifies. Get the evaluation before you pay the application fee. A four-year degree, or a three-year degree followed by an Indian master’s, is the safer case.
The CPA line on FSU's page assumes a US-style bachelor's
Florida licenses a CPA only with 150 semester hours and a bachelor’s from an accredited institution, plus a year of work checked by a US CPA. The Board’s rule 61H1-27.001 lists US accreditors, AACSB, EQUIS and six named countries, and India isn’t one of them. The same rule lets a graduate of a non-accredited four-year institution qualify after 15 graduate hours at a US accredited school, 9 of them in accounting and 3 in tax, which the MAcc covers. The hours are the harder part. If an evaluator credits a three-year B.Com with about 90 US semester hours, the MAcc’s 30 bring you to about 120, enough to sit the exam in Florida but 30 short of a licence. Ask the evaluator for your hour count before you apply.
FSU's preferred evaluator isn't on the Florida Board's list
FSU steers applicants to The Evaluation Company. The Florida Board of Accountancy accepts only five named evaluators, and neither The Evaluation Company nor WES is among them. Josef Silny and Associates and Global Services Associates appear on both the Board’s list and the NACES member list, so one report from either can serve admission and licensing.
Book IELTS for 7.0, because an English-medium degree won't waive it
Wertheim’s bar is IELTS 7.0, TOEFL 5.0 on the new scale or PTE 66, above FSU’s university minimum of 6.5, 4.0 and 55. The MAcc page accepts Duolingo 125 only for applications through Fall 2026, so a Fall 2027 file needs another test. India isn’t on FSU’s exempt list, and the Graduate School FAQ says only a US degree waives the test, whatever the MAcc page’s wording about English-medium degrees.
Show USD 64,051 for the I-20, not the figure most pages quote
FSU’s I-20 page gives a separate funding figure for the MAcc.“Master of Accounting (MAcc) | $64,051”FSU Center for Global Engagement
That table was built for 2026 admits at the old tuition rate, so expect the Fall 2027 figure to be higher. Bank letters must be under six months old and signed by a manager.
When should you apply for Fall 2027, and what goes in the file?
Work back from 15 January 2027, which the MAcc page names as the priority date for international applicants and the cut-off for assistantships and fellowships. Four outside parties sit in your path, your university’s registrar, the credential evaluator, the test board and your three referees.
You apply once, through the FSU Graduate Admissions portal, and the Wertheim Graduate Programs Office reads the file. The evaluator, the test board and your registrar each send documents to FSU directly. After admission, the Center for Global Engagement issues the I-20 once you've filed the financial responsibility form.
| Start by | Task | Takes | Why this date |
|---|---|---|---|
| 18 Nov 2026 | Order sealed transcripts from your registrar | 21 days | Indian registrars often take two to three weeks, observed. |
| 24 Nov 2026 | Sit IELTS or TOEFL for the Wertheim score | 45 days | Preparation, a test date and the official score report. |
| 09 Dec 2026 | Course-by-course evaluation from a Board-approved NACES member | 30 days | FSU won't review the file until it arrives. |
| 09 Dec 2026 | Line up three recommendation letters | 30 days | Professors or employers who know your accounting work. |
| 11 Dec 2026 | Match your papers to the 13 prerequisites | 14 days | Decides whether this cycle is realistic at all. |
| 25 Dec 2026 | Email the Graduate Programs Office your marksheets | 14 days | Get the prerequisite answer in writing, observed reply time. |
| 08 Jan 2027 | Submit the statement, CV and USD 30 fee | 7 days | Answer yes to the financial assistance question. |
The allowances are Nbyula planning estimates, not processing times published by Florida State University.
Start with the prerequisite check, because it can end the plan in one email. If the office says your Indian accounting papers don’t count, no score or letter changes that. Spending on IELTS and an evaluation before you have that answer is money at risk.
The MAcc takes new students in summer, fall and spring, with final dates of 1 March, 1 June and 1 October. The June date isn’t a real option for an Indian F-1 student, since the I-20, the visa interview and the August flight all have to fit into the eleven weeks that follow.
Wertheim’s international applicants page says international files for summer and fall priority admission must be complete before 1 December, while the MAcc page says 15 January. We’ve planned against the MAcc page’s date, but a file that’s complete by 1 December satisfies both. Scholarship applications open on 15 January and close on 1 April.
What jobs and work rights follow the FSU MAcc?
The college publishes job-offer rates by MAcc track, 97.9% for assurance and 93.8% for tax, but they cover 2021-22 graduates and don’t split out international students. The degree is coded CIP 52.1301, which is on the DHS STEM list, so OPT can stretch to 36 months.
| Measure | Figure | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Assurance track, job offers | 97.9% | Wertheim table for Summer 2021 to Spring 2022 graduates, six-month follow-up. Self-reported, programme level. |
| Taxation track, job offers | 93.8% | Same Wertheim table and cohort. |
| Corporate accounting track | 86.7% | Same table. The track has since been renamed Generalist. |
| Accountant median pay, US | USD 83,680 | BLS, accountants and auditors, May 2025. National, not FSU graduates. |
| Accountant job growth | 5% | BLS projection for 2025 to 2035, about 115,300 openings a year. |
| Work permission after | 12 + 24 months | OPT plus STEM OPT, because FSU codes all three majors as CIP 52.1301 Management Science. |
| H-1B master's cap | 20,000 extra | Reserved for US master's holders. The lottery has been weighted by wage level since FY 2027. |
| Florida CPA licence | 150 hours | Plus one year of work verified by a US CPA and the exam. The MAcc alone doesn't get you there. |
The placement figures are four years old, self-reported by the college and not split by nationality. Treat them as evidence that accounting firms hire from this course, not as your odds.
FSU says its assurance graduates most often work as auditors or advisory staff at large international public accounting firms, and its taxation graduates join the same firms as tax professionals. It publishes no employer list and no salary for the MAcc. We looked on the programme page, the 2026-27 handbook, the bulletin and the college’s student statistics page. The job-offer rates by track are the college’s own counts for the 2021-22 cycle, not salaries and not an audited survey.
The STEM code is the unusual part. Plain accounting, CIP 52.0301, isn’t on the DHS list; FSU files the MAcc under 52.1301, Management Science, and USCIS goes by the CIP code on your I-20, not the degree name. That gives 12 months of OPT and a 24-month extension if your employer uses E-Verify and meets the other USCIS conditions.
H-1B is harder than the job-offer rates suggest. The USD 100,000 payment in the September 2025 proclamation doesn’t apply to an in-US change of status that’s granted, and a court has blocked its collection since June 2026, but the proclamation was renewed on 18 September 2026 and DHS has proposed a separate USD 103,265 fee on cap petitions. Both could change before you graduate.
In India a US CPA isn’t a substitute for the CA. It’s a US licence, it needs a year of work verified by a licensed US CPA, and Florida’s 2026 bills to cut the 150-hour rule, SB 364 and HB 333, both died in March 2026.
How is FSU ranked for business and accounting?
Times Higher Education puts FSU in the 301 to 400 band for Business and Economics 2026, its closest subject table to accounting. The overall tables rank the whole university. None of these ranks the MAcc itself, and none decides admission or predicts your job.
Who should apply to the FSU MAcc, and who shouldn't?
Match yourself to a row before paying for an evaluation. The MAcc suits someone who already has US-style accounting on paper and wants a US or Florida CPA track. It doesn't suit a commerce graduate hoping the degree will teach US accounting from the start.
| Verdict | Your background | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Strong fit | Four-year accounting degree with US GAAP, US audit and US tax papers on the transcript | Clears the prerequisite list and the hour count for a Florida licence, so the only open questions are GPA and English. |
| Strong fit | Indian B.Com plus an Indian master's, aiming at audit or tax at a large US firm | The extra degree helps both the comparable-degree test and the 150-hour count. Prerequisites still need a written answer. |
| Needs evidence | CA or CA Inter with a three-year B.Com | Strong accounting, but taught to Indian standards and law. Admission and the CPA hour count both depend on how FSU and the evaluator read it. |
| Do not shortlist | Three-year B.Com with only Indian accounting and tax papers, applying straight from India | FSU won't consider the file until US-standard prerequisites are done, and it offers no F-1 route to take them first. |
| Do not shortlist | BTech or BSc graduate wanting a conversion into accounting | The non-accounting-majors route is no longer on the programme page. Look at conversion master's that teach the basics inside the degree. |
| Needs evidence | Strong applicant who can only file in May for the 1 June date | Allowed on paper, but it misses funding and leaves about eleven weeks for the I-20, visa and travel. |
The honest filter is the transcript, not ambition. If three or more of the six accounting prerequisites are missing in US form, this programme will cost you a year of prerequisite study in the US that FSU doesn’t offer as an F-1 route, and a different course is the better use of the money.
What will you study in the FSU MAcc, major by major?
Every major is ten 3-credit courses, 30 credit hours in all, over three terms with no thesis. Three courses are shared by all majors, and each major then has its own list. Only two of the ten slots are electives, and both are non-accounting electives.
| Code | Component | Credit hours | Where it sits |
|---|---|---|---|
| ACG 5635 | Auditing Theory and Application II | 3 | All three majors |
| ACG 5695 | Challenges in Professional Accounting | 3 | All three majors |
| GEB 5086 | Professional Development | 3 | All three majors |
| ACG 5135 | Financial Accounting Theory and Standard Setting | 3 | Assurance and Generalist |
| ACG 5175 | Financial Statement Analysis | 3 | Assurance and Generalist |
| ACG 5685 | Forensic Accounting | 3 | Assurance and Taxation |
| ACG 5405 | Advanced Accounting Information Systems | 3 | Assurance |
| ACG 5458 | Emerging Technologies in Accounting and Auditing | 3 | Assurance |
| ACG 5356 | Advanced Management Accounting | 3 | Generalist |
| ACG 5505 | Government and Not-for-Profit Accounting and Auditing | 3 | Generalist |
| TAX 5065 | Research in Federal Taxation | 3 | Taxation |
| TAX 5105 | Seminar in Corporate Income Taxation | 3 | Taxation |
| TAX 5205 | Pass-through Entities and Fiduciaries | 3 | Taxation |
| TAX 5527 | Multijurisdictional Tax Issues | 3 | Taxation |
| ACG 5216 | Advanced Accounting | 3 | Replaces an elective without US advanced accounting |
| TAX 5015 | Federal Income Tax Accounting II | 3 | Replaces an elective without US corporate tax |
| BUL 5335 | Law for Accountancy | 3 | Combined BS/MAcc students |
| GEB 5944 | Graduate Internship | 3 | Counts as a non-accounting elective |
| Credits each student completes | 30 |
- Assurance and Taxation each take two non-accounting electives; Generalist takes one accounting elective and two non-accounting electives
- An accounting elective is any 5000-level ACG or TAX course except ACG 5026
- Every course needs C- or better, and you graduate only with a 3.0 programme GPA
The catch-up courses cost choice, not money. ACG 5216 and TAX 5015 sit inside the 30 credit hours, so the bill doesn’t change, but they fill the two non-accounting elective slots that a student with US prerequisites would spend outside accounting. For an Indian B.Com or CA entrant, that makes the MAcc a straight accounting degree from the first week to the last, with no free elective left.
The Taxation major is the most US-specific of the three, with four courses on federal, corporate, pass-through and multistate tax. It’s the right pick only if you plan to work in US tax, because none of it transfers to Indian practice.
Assurance and Advisory Services adds forensic accounting and two technology courses, and it’s the track with the highest published job-offer rate. Generalist is the broadest and the only one with a free accounting elective.
Should an Indian commerce graduate shortlist the FSU MAcc?
Shortlist it only if your transcript already shows accounting taught to US standards, and only then. The department won’t consider you until you’ve completed thirteen prerequisite courses, and the accounting ones must cover US GAAP, US auditing standards and US tax law. Most Indian B.Com and CA papers teach Indian standards.
If you clear that, the deal is good for the money. One calendar year, a published job-offer rate above 93% in two of its tracks, and a STEM code that stretches work permission to three years. The price is flexibility. There's no thesis, no second year to build a US résumé, and missing US courses quietly replace your two free electives.
Three things are genuinely hard here. The accounting prerequisites must be US-standard, and the live page no longer offers the old conversion route, so most Indian files can't even be read. The CPA claim on FSU's page assumes a qualifying bachelor's; Florida wants 150 semester hours and doesn't list Indian universities as accredited, which leaves a three-year B.Com holder short. And Wertheim's own international page asks for files by 1 December, six weeks before the MAcc page's date.
- The FSU MAcc is 30 credit hours over three terms, and a Fall 2027 entrant finishes on 4 August 2028.
- The full programme costs about INR 73.75 lakh, or USD 77,040.10, at INR 95.7310 per USD.
- Thirteen prerequisite courses must be done before admission, and the six accounting ones must be taught to US GAAP, US GAAS and US tax law.
- Wertheim asks for IELTS 7.0 or PTE 66, and the MAcc page accepts Duolingo only through Fall 2026.
- All three majors are coded CIP 52.1301, which is on the DHS STEM list, allowing up to 36 months of OPT.
- A Florida CPA licence needs 150 semester hours, so a three-year B.Com plus the 30-credit MAcc may still fall short.
Frequently asked questions
Is FSU Master of Accounting STEM designated for Indian students?
Yes. FSU codes all three majors, Assurance and Advisory Services, Generalist and Taxation, as CIP 52.1301, Management Science, which is on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List dated 22 July 2024. That allows 12 months of OPT plus a 24-month STEM extension, if the employer and job meet the USCIS conditions.
Can I do the FSU MAcc after a three-year B.Com?
FSU doesn't say yes or no. It asks for a degree comparable to a US bachelor's and a 3.0 upper-division GPA, both read from a NACES course-by-course evaluation. Get that evaluation before paying the application fee, and ask the Graduate Programs Office in writing. A four-year degree is the safer case.
Will my B.Com accounting papers count as MAcc prerequisites?
Probably not all of them. FSU requires six accounting prerequisites, financial accounting I and II, cost, information systems, auditing and federal tax, and says they must be based on US GAAP, US GAAS and US tax law. Papers taught to Ind AS and Indian tax law don't match that wording, so ask before you apply.
What is the total cost of FSU MAcc in Indian rupees?
About INR 73.75 lakh, or USD 77,040.10, for Fall 2027 entry. That covers 30 credits at USD 1,281.77, flat fees, 13 months of living at FSU's USD 2,545 monthly estimate, books, one year of compulsory health insurance, and the application, SEVIS and visa fees, converted at INR 95.7310 per USD.
Is GMAT or GRE required for FSU MAcc?
No. Test scores are optional for the MAcc and should be sent only if they strengthen your application, because any score you send is used in the decision. The college recommends that submitted scores sit at or above the 50th percentile. English is not optional, and Wertheim asks for IELTS 7.0 or PTE 66.
What is the FSU MAcc deadline for Fall 2027?
The programme page gives 15 January 2027 as the priority date for international applicants and for assistantships and fellowships, with a final fall deadline of 1 June 2027. Wertheim's international page asks for complete files by 1 December 2026, so filing by then satisfies both dates.
Can I become a US CPA after the FSU MAcc?
Only if your total education reaches Florida's 150 semester hours, and you then pass the exam and complete a year of work verified by a US CPA. Florida doesn't list Indian universities as accredited, so you rely on a graduate-hours route and a Board-approved evaluator. A three-year B.Com may leave you short on hours.
Does FSU give scholarships for the MAcc to international students?
The accounting department's fellowships are USD 1,500 a year, and assistantships pay a stipend for 10 hours of work a week with a tuition waiver the handbook calls in-state. You must apply by 15 January to be considered. Nothing published covers the out-of-state fee, so plan to self-fund most of the cost.
