What is the MS Chemical Engineering at FSU?
FSU’s MS Chemical Engineering is a 30-credit master’s at the joint FAMU-FSU College of Engineering in Tallahassee, with thesis and course-based routes of equal length. At FSU’s approved Fall 2027 rate of USD 1,281.77 per credit hour, tuition comes to USD 38,453. Across the department’s two-year plan, our all-in total is about INR 99.05 lakh.
Both routes share a 15-credit core that includes Advanced Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics I and Advanced Transport Phenomena I, taught on the joint college’s Pottsdamer Street campus, less than three miles from FSU’s main campus. The thesis route swaps six elective credits for thesis research, an oral defence and a journal-ready manuscript, and it only admits in Fall. This page is written for Fall 2027 entry. FSU hasn’t yet published its 2027-28 living budget, insurance premium or I-20 funds table, so those rows use the 2026-27 figures and say so.
How much does FSU's MS Chemical Engineering cost an Indian student?
The full two-year plan comes to USD 103,462, about INR 99.05 lakh. That’s far above the USD 20,000 a year some listing sites quote, because FSU charges USD 1,281.77 per credit hour for Fall 2027 entrants, and an F-1 student can’t waive FSU’s health insurance.
| Item | INR | Local currency | When it is due |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tuition and per-credit fees, 30 credits at USD 1,281.77 | INR 36.81 lakh | USD 38,453.10 | Each semester, by credits taken |
| Facility and FSUCard fees, 4 semesters at USD 25 | INR 9,573 | USD 100 | Each semester |
| Living in Tallahassee, 22 months at USD 2,545 | INR 53.60 lakh | USD 55,990 | Monthly, August 2027 to May 2029 |
| Books and supplies, 4 semesters at USD 690 | INR 2.64 lakh | USD 2,760 | Start of each semester |
| FSU health insurance, 2 years at USD 2,797 | INR 5.36 lakh | USD 5,594 | Billed each year, no waiver |
| Application fee | INR 2,872 | USD 30 | When you apply |
| SEVIS I-901 fee | INR 33,506 | USD 350 | Before the visa interview |
| US student visa fee (MRV) | INR 17,710 | USD 185 | When you book the interview |
| Full programme, two years | INR 99.05 lakh | USD 103,462.10 | August 2027 to May 2029 |
FSU's 2026 I-20 table asks a graduate student to show USD 49,944 for the first year; that's proof of funds that stays in your account, not an extra cost, and the Fall 2027 figure will likely be higher. A USD 250 visa integrity fee is in US law, but we couldn't confirm on 24 September 2026 that it's being collected, so it's left out. Converted at INR 95.7310 per USD, the FBIL reference rate for 23 September 2026 shown on rbi.org.in. Living is FSU's 2026-27 off-campus graduate budget of USD 22,906 for nine months, spread at USD 2,545 a month including the summer, and flights are excluded.
The 30 credits don’t divide neatly into full-time semesters. The CBE handbook counts nine credits a semester as full-time for international students and warns that you may need extra hours to stay full-time. Each extra credit costs USD 1,281.77, so six more credits would add USD 7,690, about INR 7.36 lakh, to the table above.
There’s a cheaper path for a chemical engineering graduate on the thesis route. FSU’s bulletin says such students normally finish in four to five terms, including one summer term. Finishing in December 2028 instead of May 2029 takes five months of living off the bill, USD 12,725 or about INR 12.18 lakh.
If your degree isn’t chemical engineering, budget for more than this table. Preparatory undergraduate courses can add up to a year, and the bulletin says those students normally aren’t funded in that year. FSU doesn’t say how those courses are billed to a graduate student, so ask the department before you accept an offer.
Assistantships are the only published way to cut tuition. The handbook says tuition waivers go to students on a research or teaching assistantship enrolled full time, and that self-supported students aren’t eligible. It also says the department’s TA money is limited, especially in summer, so don’t build a loan plan around one.
Can an Indian BTech graduate get into FSU's MS Chemical Engineering?
Yes, if your degree is in chemical engineering or an allied field with a 3.0 upper-division GPA, and FSU’s credential evaluation finds it comparable to a US bachelor’s. The department’s admission page needs no GRE from engineering master’s applicants, and IELTS 6.5 or an equal score. Non-chemical degrees may trigger preparatory courses.
| Requirement | Published rule | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Prior degree | Bachelor's in chemical or biomedical engineering, or an allied field | Match your degree title and core subjects to that wording |
| Three-year degree (India) | No FSU or department rule published; the degree must be comparable to a US bachelor's | Get the credential evaluation before you pay the application fee |
| Grade average (India) | 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in upper-division work, counted from the term of your 60th credit hour | Ask the evaluator to calculate the upper-division GPA |
| Maths and science | Differential equations before you start, plus biology, chemistry and physics sequences | Find each course on your marksheets and note its credits |
| Preparatory courses | Up to nine undergraduate ECH courses at grade B or better if your degree isn't chemical engineering | List your thermodynamics, transport, separations and reactor design credits |
| Credential evaluation (India) | Course-by-course NACES evaluation; unofficial international transcripts aren't reviewed | Order it from the link on your FSU application status page |
| GRE | Waived for all engineering master's applicants | Skip the GRE unless the department asks for it in writing |
| English (India) | IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 4.0 on the new scale, PTE 55 or Duolingo 125 | Book a test whose score arrives before 15 January 2027 |
| Letters and statement | Two recommendation letters, a current CV and a statement of purpose | Choose referees who can speak about your research potential |
| Proof of funds (India) | USD 49,944 on FSU's 2026 I-20 table, dated bank letters | Get a signed bank letter dated within six months of the I-20 request |
India isn’t on FSU’s English exemption list, and an English-medium Indian degree doesn’t waive the test at university level. The department lists Duolingo at 125 for FSU applicants and 120 for FAMU applicants, while the handbook still quotes TOEFL iBT 80, the old scale. For a test taken on or after 21 January 2026, use the new-scale 4.0.
FSU publishes no backlog rule. Its GPA rule counts all work attempted in upper-division years, so a failed attempt that you later cleared may still pull the average down. Ask your evaluator how they’ll treat it before you rely on your final CGPA.
Check the prior degree and the maths and science rows together. A BTech in chemical engineering clears both almost by definition. A BTech in an allied branch, say petroleum or polymer engineering, usually has differential equations and chemistry but may lack separations or reactor design, and those gaps are what the preparatory sequence fills.
After you arrive, every new CBE graduate student has to take the SPEAK spoken English test, funded or not. A score of 45 clears grading duties and 50 clears lab teaching, so it matters if you’re hoping for a TA post later.
Five things that decide an Indian chemical engineering file
Settle three-year degree equivalence before you pay anything
No FSU page and no CBE page says whether a three-year Indian BSc counts. The Graduate School asks for a degree comparable to a US bachelor’s, and the course-by-course evaluation decides that. A four-year BE or BTech is the safe case. If you hold a three-year BSc in chemistry, get the evaluation done first and send it to the department with a short question, because an evaluation that calls it three years of study can end the file before anyone reads your statement.
Declare your upper-division average, not your final percentage
FSU’s 3.0 is measured on the later part of your degree. The Graduate School says“The Upper-division undergraduate GPA includes the entire term in which you attempted your 60th credit hour and continues until completion of the baccalaureate degree.”FSU Graduate School
For a four-year BTech that means your later semesters, as the evaluator maps them to US credit hours. FSU publishes no table converting Indian percentages or CGPA, so the evaluator’s figure is the one that counts. A weak first year matters less here than a weak final year.A chemistry, petroleum or biotech degree can mean an extra year of undergraduate courses
The department can require its undergraduate core before graduate courses. The admission page says“Students who do not have a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering may be required to complete a department-designated sequence of undergraduate courses with grade of “B” or higher in each course.”FAMU-FSU Chemical and Biomedical Engineering
The list runs from ECH 3101 Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics to ECH 4504 Kinetics and Reactor Design, and can add ECH 3023, 3024 and 3301. FSU’s bulletin adds that such students get one additional year and are normally not supported financially in it.Treat the GRE waiver as current, but get it confirmed
FSU’s own documents disagree on the end date. The July 2026 CBE handbook says“The GRE requirement has been waived (and extended) for all engineering master’s applicants.”CBE Graduate Handbook, July 2026
The 2026-27 bulletin and a line lower down the admission page still say the waiver runs through Fall 2026. The handbook is the newest document and names no end date, so skip the GRE, but ask the graduate coordinator to confirm it for Fall 2027 by email and keep the reply.Apply through FSU, not FAMU, if you want these fees and an FSU degree
The college belongs to two universities and you apply through only one. The admission page says the coursework is the same either way, but you’ll earn a diploma from only the university you applied through. Everything on this page, the fees, the insurance and the I-20 figure, is FSU’s. FAMU has its own application portal, fees and Duolingo minimum of 120, so don’t mix the two sets of numbers.
How and when should you apply for Fall 2027?
There are three hand-overs. You send the file, a NACES evaluator verifies your marks, and FSU’s Graduate School passes it to the department. Work back from 15 January 2027, the date the department asks international applicants to meet, because the I-20 request closes on 15 May and 1 July is too late for a visa.
Apply once through FSU's Graduate School portal, pick the thesis or course-based MS Chemical Engineering, and the CBE graduate committee decides.
| Start by | Task | Takes | Why this date |
|---|---|---|---|
| 09 Nov 2026 | Take IELTS, TOEFL or PTE | 60 days | Our estimate. It leaves room for one retake if a sitting misses 6.5. |
| 09 Nov 2026 | Collect transcripts and degree certificate | 30 days | Observed. Indian universities often take weeks to issue official marksheets. |
| 09 Dec 2026 | Get the NACES course-by-course evaluation | 30 days | Our estimate. FSU won't review an international file until the evaluation arrives. |
| 18 Dec 2026 | Write the statement and line up two referees | 21 days | Our estimate. Name research areas and, for the thesis route, possible advisors. |
| 08 Jan 2027 | Submit the FSU application | 7 days | Pay the USD 30 fee. A file is reviewed only once every item is in. |
The allowances are Nbyula planning estimates, not processing times published by Florida State University.
You own the English score, the transcripts and the statement. The evaluator owns the course-by-course report, which FSU needs before it’ll look at an international file. The Graduate School checks the file is complete, and the department’s graduate committee makes the decision. After an offer, FSU’s Center for Global Engagement issues the I-20 against your proof of funds.
Choose your route before you apply, because it changes the calendar. The thesis MS admits only in Fall, with a final deadline of 1 July. The course-based MS lists Spring, Summer and Fall deadlines of 1 November, 1 March and 1 July, but the handbook says Spring and Summer starts happen only under special conditions and after talking to the department first.
If you want funding, the January date matters twice. The department ties full funding consideration for its PhD applicants to 15 January, and the handbook tells anyone hoping for a stipend, tuition cover or insurance subsidy to apply well before the deadlines.
The 1 July final deadline on the department table does not work for Indian applicants. The I-20 request closes on 15 May for students outside the US, and visa appointments in India can take weeks after that, so treat 15 May as the real last date and 15 January as the safe one.
What jobs and pay can an FSU chemical engineering master's lead to?
FSU publishes no placement rate or employer list for this master’s. The nearest hard data is national. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the 2025 median pay of chemical engineers at USD 125,040, with 5% job growth expected over 2025 to 2035. The degree’s CIP code is on the STEM list, so OPT can run 36 months.
| Measure | Figure | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Programme placement rate | Not published | Checked the programme page, handbook, bulletin and 2024 department annual report |
| Master's degrees awarded, 2024-25 | 7 | FSU Fact Book, CIP 14.0701, all nationalities |
| Chemical engineers' median pay, 2025 | USD 125,040 | BLS, every US chemical engineer at any degree level |
| Job growth, 2025 to 2035 | 5% | BLS projection, about 1,100 openings a year |
| OPT after graduation | 12 + 24 months | CIP 14.0701 is on the DHS STEM list dated 22 July 2024 |
| H-1B master's cap | 20,000 places | Extra cap for US master's holders, weighted lottery since FY 2027 |
The BLS figures cover every chemical engineer in the US, not FSU graduates, and FSU's 7 is a count of degrees, not a job outcome.
The department’s own description is broad. Its bulletin says chemical engineers with graduate degrees work in government, private companies and education, in process and plant operation, R&D labs, plant design, safety, technical sales and management. It names industries from petrochemicals and polymers to pharmaceuticals, semiconductors and paper, but no employers.
Pay varies by sector. BLS lists May 2025 medians of USD 133,050 in the federal government, USD 127,090 in engineering services, USD 124,540 in research and development and USD 112,300 in chemical manufacturing. These are national medians for chemical engineers at every career stage, not starting salaries for new master’s graduates.
STEM OPT depends on the CIP code on your I-20, and both the DHS list and FSU’s own STEM list include 14.0701 for this master’s. You apply for the first 12 months up to 90 days before and no later than 60 days after you finish, then for the 24-month extension.
For an Indian recruiter, the facts that travel are the STEM designation and a US master’s, not FSU’s world rank of 549. In the US, the degree’s real advantage is the separate H-1B cap of 20,000 places kept for holders of a US master’s or higher, which only a US degree unlocks.
The USD 100,000 H-1B payment applies to petitions for people outside the US. USCIS says it doesn’t apply when a change of status inside the US is granted, and a June 2026 court order has stopped collection for now. A separate USD 103,265 fee on all cap-subject petitions was only a proposal on 24 September 2026. Leaving the US before your change of status is decided brings the USD 100,000 back into play.
How is FSU ranked for engineering?
Ranking is context here, not an admission rule. Times Higher Education places FSU in the 251 to 300 band for Engineering in 2026, and QS puts the whole university at 549. Neither body publishes a chemical engineering table for FSU that we could read on its own site.
| Publisher | Position | Table and year |
|---|---|---|
| Times Higher Education | 251 to 300 | Engineering subject ranking 2026 |
| Times Higher Education | 301 to 350 | World University Rankings 2026 |
| QS | 549 | World University Rankings 2026 |
Who should pick FSU's MS Chemical Engineering, and who shouldn't?
It fits a chemical engineering graduate who can pay for two years and wants either a solid taught master's or a research start. It fits a graduate from another discipline far less well, because preparatory courses and an unfunded extra year change both the cost and the timeline.
| Verdict | Your background | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Strong fit | BE or BTech in chemical engineering, self-funded for two years | Meets the degree rule outright, skips preparatory courses and can take the course-based route. |
| Strong fit | Chemical engineering graduate aiming for a PhD or research job | The thesis route adds an advisor, a defence and a manuscript, and thesis students are the master's students who compete for assistantships. |
| Needs evidence | BTech in petroleum, polymer or biotechnology engineering | Counts as allied only if the department agrees, and some ECH 3000 and 4000 level courses are likely. |
| Needs evidence | Three-year BSc followed by an Indian MSc in chemistry | The completed master's may meet FSU's graduate degree route, but FSU hasn't said so. Get the evaluation first. |
| Do not shortlist | Three-year BSc chemistry graduate who needs funding | Preparatory courses, an extra year the department normally doesn't fund, and no published equivalence rule. Too many unknowns for this much money. |
| Do not shortlist | Anyone who wants a one-year master's | The department plans two years, and 30 credits at nine a semester doesn't fit into two terms. |
Thesis, course-based or the biomedical sibling
| Programme | Best for | Main limit |
|---|---|---|
| MS Chemical Engineering, course-based | Self-funded ChemE graduates heading for industry | Departmental funding generally not available |
| MS Chemical Engineering, thesis | Research-minded students heading for a PhD | Fall entry only, advisor needed in term one |
| MS Biomedical Engineering, same department | Cell, tissue and biomaterials work | Core swaps thermodynamics for cell bioengineering |
The course-based route is the honest default for most Indian applicants. It needs no advisor at entry, admits in more than one term and finishes on coursework alone. The price is that you pay the whole bill.
Size cuts both ways. FSU’s Chemical and Biomedical Engineering department had 63 graduate students in Fall 2025, per FSU’s Fact Book, and FSU awarded just seven chemical engineering master’s degrees in 2024-25. You’ll get close contact with faculty, but a thin elective timetable and few classmates to share interview leads with.
Pick the thesis route only if you already know which lab you want. You’ll have to choose a CBE faculty advisor by the end of your first semester, form a three-member committee by the end of your second, and pass a defence scored at 3.0 or better on the department’s rubric.
What will you study in FSU's MS Chemical Engineering?
Everyone takes the same 15-credit core. The course-based route adds 15 elective credits. The thesis route adds nine elective credits and six credits of thesis research. On either route, at least six elective credits must come from the chemical engineering list the programme page publishes.

| ECH 5935 | Chemical Engineering Seminar | 0 | Every Fall and Spring, both routes |
| Degree total, either route | 30 |
- No grade below C counts toward the degree, and only one C counts.
- At least 6 elective credits must be chemical engineering (ECH) courses.
- Transfer credit is capped at 6 hours, needs department approval and a B or better.
- Thesis students register for at least 2 thesis credits in the term they defend.
- The degree must be finished within seven years of first enrolling.
The rest of your elective credits can come from the department’s approved list outside ECH, which includes CHM 5153 Electrochemistry, CHM 5450 Polymer Chemistry, EGN 5458 Statistical Applications for Engineering and ISC 5228 Monte Carlo Methods. The typical electives above are the ones the department names; what actually runs changes by term, so check with the graduate coordinator before you plan a semester.
The research areas behind the thesis route are advanced materials, energy and sustainability, life and health, and theory, computation and AI. The chemical engineering end of that includes electrocatalysis, membrane and magnetic field-assisted separations, recyclable plastics and plasma chemical engineering. A thesis also has to produce at least one manuscript ready for a peer-reviewed journal.
Should you shortlist FSU's MS Chemical Engineering?
Shortlist it if you hold a BE or BTech in chemical engineering and can fund two years yourself, and only then. The department generally doesn’t support course-based master’s students, as the programme page says in one line. A thesis student can win an assistantship, but PhD students get first preference.
What you get is a small, research-heavy department. FSU awarded seven master's degrees in chemical engineering in 2024-25, and the department runs labs in polymers, electrochemical engineering and plasma reaction engineering, with faculty working at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory. What it costs you is flexibility. The core is fixed, electives depend on what runs that term, and a thesis ties you to one advisor you must choose by the end of your first semester.
Two things are genuinely hard here. If your degree isn't chemical engineering, the department can require as many as nine undergraduate ECH courses at a B or better, and FSU's bulletin says those students normally get one extra year that isn't funded. And the money is almost all yours, around INR 99 lakh over two years, because tuition waivers go only to students holding an assistantship. A chemistry or biotech graduate who needs funding should look at other universities first.
- FSU's MS Chemical Engineering is 30 credit hours on either route, and 30 credits at the Fall 2027 rate of USD 1,281.77 come to USD 38,453 in tuition.
- Over the department's two-year plan, tuition, 22 months of Tallahassee living, insurance and visa fees total about INR 99.05 lakh.
- The department generally doesn't fund course-based master's students, and tuition waivers go only to students holding an assistantship.
- A degree other than chemical engineering can bring up to nine undergraduate ECH courses at grade B or better and an extra year.
- Apply by 15 January 2027. The I-20 request closes on 15 May, and the 1 July final deadline is too late for most Indian visa timelines.
- CIP 14.0701 is on the DHS STEM list, so graduates can get 12 months of OPT plus a 24-month STEM extension.
Frequently asked questions
What is the total cost of MS Chemical Engineering at FSU for Indian students?
About INR 99.05 lakh, or USD 103,462, for the department's two-year plan starting Fall 2027. That covers 30 credits at USD 1,281.77, semester fees, 22 months of off-campus living, books, two years of mandatory FSU health insurance, the application fee, SEVIS and the visa fee. Flights aren't included.
Is GRE required for MS Chemical Engineering at FSU?
No. The Chemical and Biomedical Engineering handbook, revised July 2026, says the GRE is waived for all engineering master's applicants. Some older FSU pages still say the waiver runs through Fall 2026, so it's worth asking the department to confirm the waiver for Fall 2027 by email before you skip the test.
Can I apply to FSU MS Chemical Engineering with a BSc chemistry degree?
You can apply, but expect conditions. The department may require up to nine undergraduate chemical engineering courses at grade B or better, and FSU's bulletin says such students normally take an extra year without departmental funding. FSU publishes no rule on three-year Indian degrees, so get the credential evaluation first.
What GPA do I need for FSU MS Chemical Engineering?
FSU and the department ask for 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in upper-division work, counted from the term in which you attempted your 60th credit hour to the end of the degree. FSU publishes no Indian percentage or CGPA conversion, so the NACES evaluator's figure is the one that decides your file.
What is the deadline for FSU MS Chemical Engineering Fall 2027?
The department asks international applicants living outside the US to apply by 15 January 2027. The I-20 request closes on 15 May 2027, and the final deadline on the department table is 1 July 2027. The thesis route admits only in Fall, so there's no Spring fallback for it.
Do FSU chemical engineering master's students get assistantships?
Rarely on the course-based route, which the programme page says generally gets no departmental support. Thesis students can compete for teaching or research assistantships, but PhD students get first preference and summer TA money is limited. An assistantship brings a tuition waiver, though per-credit fees and insurance aren't fully covered.
Is FSU MS Chemical Engineering a STEM degree for OPT?
Yes. The programme's CIP code, 14.0701, appears on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List dated 22 July 2024 and on FSU's own list of STEM-eligible majors. That allows 12 months of OPT after graduation plus a 24-month STEM extension, if you apply within the USCIS filing windows.
