What is the FSU MS in Food and Nutrition?
FSU’s Master of Science in Food and Nutrition is a 32-credit-hour Tallahassee master’s with one major, Nutrition and Food Science, taken as a nutrition science or a food science specialisation. Fall 2027 entrants pay USD 1,281.77 per credit hour, so tuition is USD 41,016.64. With 22 months of living, insurance and visa costs, plan for about INR 101.50 lakh.
Every FSU admit starts on the coursework-only track and sits a comprehensive exam with a 70% pass mark. A thesis opens up only after the first of four semesters, and only if FSU graduate faculty back you. A dietetic internship route adds 15 to 18 credits, but only for students who already hold a US Didactic Program in Dietetics statement. This page is written for Fall 2027 entry, and FSU hasn’t yet posted its Fall 2027 I-20 funding table or 2027-28 insurance premiums.
How much does the FSU MS in Food and Nutrition cost in total?
Plan for USD 106,025.64, about INR 101.50 lakh, for 22 months. The idea that a Florida public university is cheap doesn’t hold for an F-1 student, who pays FSU’s out-of-state rate of USD 1,281.77 per credit hour for Fall 2027 entry. Tuition is 39% of the total and Tallahassee living is 53%.
| Item | INR | Local currency | When it is due |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tuition and fees, 32 credit hours over four semesters | INR 39.36 lakh | USD 41,116.64 | Each Fall and Spring, before classes |
| Living, 22 months at USD 2,545 | INR 53.60 lakh | USD 55,990.00 | Monthly, August 2027 to May 2029 |
| Books and supplies, four semesters | INR 2.64 lakh | USD 2,760.00 | Start of each semester |
| Health insurance, two years | INR 5.36 lakh | USD 5,594.00 | Billed automatically each August |
| Application, SEVIS and visa fees | INR 54,000 | USD 565.00 | Before the visa interview |
| Total, full programme | INR 101.50 lakh | USD 106,025.64 | Across 22 months |
The USD 49,944 FSU asks you to show for the I-20 on its 2026 table is proof of funds for one year, not an extra cost, and the money stays yours. The USD 250 visa integrity fee in Public Law 119-21 is left out because its collection wasn't confirmed on 24 September 2026. Converted at INR 95.7310 per USD, the FBIL reference rate for 23 September 2026 shown on the RBI site, with each row rounded to the nearest thousand rupees.
The tuition row is 32 x USD 1,281.77 = USD 41,016.64, plus USD 25 a semester in flat charges, which are the USD 20 facility fee and the USD 5 FSUCard fee. FSU’s trustees approved the Fall 2027 rate in August 2026, up from USD 1,278.04 in 2026-27. FSU’s international office tells students to allow for possible 15% yearly increases, and your second year falls in 2028-29.
Living uses FSU’s own 2026-27 off-campus budget for graduate students, USD 22,906 for nine months, spread at USD 2,545 a month over all 22 months, including the summer of 2028 when you aren’t enrolled. Health insurance is compulsory for every F-1 student from 2026-27, and FSU no longer accepts an Indian or cheaper US policy in its place.
Don’t mistake the I-20 figure for a budget. FSU’s USD 49,944 table was built on the 2025-26 rate of USD 1,173.86 per credit hour. On this page’s method, the first 12 months cost about USD 57,839, which is 18 credits of tuition, two semesters of flat fees, 12 months of living, a year of books and a year of insurance. That’s roughly INR 55.37 lakh, and it’s the sum a family should have ready before the first year starts, well above the INR 47.81 lakh the I-20 asks you to show.
The 22 months assume FSU’s standard I-20 load of 9 credits each Fall and Spring, which finishes in May 2029. Carrying 11 credits a term could end the degree in December 2028 and save about USD 13,440 in living, books and fees. FSU doesn’t publish a three-semester plan and electives run on their own schedule, so don’t budget on it.
The Graduate Bulletin lists food science at 33 credits, one more than nutrition science, which adds USD 1,281.77, about INR 1.23 lakh. The dietetic internship route runs 47 to 50 credits over 24 months, which adds USD 19,226.55 to USD 23,071.86 in tuition before the extra living months.
No master’s scholarship is published by the department. The HNFS handbook says out-of-state tuition waivers are available only to students who get an assistantship during the first academic year, and its advice to establish Florida residency by year two needs US citizenship, a green card or an indefinite stay, which an F-1 student doesn’t have.
Can an Indian graduate get into the FSU MS in Food and Nutrition?
Yes, if a credential evaluator rates your bachelor’s as comparable to a US degree with a 3.0 upper-division GPA, and your transcript shows the chemistry and the nutrition or food science courses the department lists. The GRE is waived for MS applicants. No FSU page rules a three-year BSc in or out, so the evaluation decides.
| Requirement | Published rule | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor's degree (India) | A bachelor's degree or equivalent from an accredited university, comparable to a US bachelor's | Get a NACES course-by-course evaluation before paying the USD 30 fee |
| Upper-division GPA (India) | 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, counted from the term of your 60th credit to graduation | Let the evaluator calculate it from your marksheets |
| Nutrition science prerequisites | Science of Nutrition (B- or better), Anatomy and Physiology I with lab (C+), Organic Chemistry I and II with lab, Survey of Biochemistry with lab, Metabolism of Nutrients I and II (C or better) | Match each course to a marksheet line and a syllabus |
| Food science prerequisites | Foods with lab, Food Science with lab, Organic Chemistry I and II with lab, Survey of Biochemistry with lab and Microbiology, each C or better | List any missing course and ask the department how it treats it |
| Specialisation | The statement of purpose must say food science or nutrition science | Pick the lane whose prerequisites you already meet |
| GRE | Waived for MS applicants | Get the waiver confirmed by email before skipping the test |
| English test (India) | IELTS Academic 6.5, TOEFL iBT 80 before 21 January 2026 or 4.0 after, or PTE 55. India is not exempt | Have scores sent straight from the test body by mid-January 2027 |
| Credential evaluation (India) | Course-by-course report from a NACES member | Order through FSU's link to The Evaluation Company |
| Recommendations | Two referees, academic preferred, with work email addresses. No personal or peer letters | Ask two professors who taught your science courses |
| Dietetic internship | US DPD verification statement, MS application by 1 November and a DICAS application by 15 January | Plan the non-internship route unless you already hold that statement |
| Funds for the I-20 (India) | USD 49,944 for the first year on FSU's 2026 table, bank letter dated within six months | Arrange a signed bank letter on the bank's letterhead |
The department sets no English bar above the Graduate School’s, so IELTS Academic 6.5 overall is the working minimum even though the programme page lists only TOEFL. FSU lists no per-band IELTS minimum for graduate admission.
Meeting every line of the table doesn’t guarantee a place. The department says it can raise its standards when applications outnumber places, and the cohort is small, 11 master’s degrees in 2024-25. A file that clears the 3.0 with a gap in the prerequisites is weaker than one that clears it with every course in place, because the gap becomes extra semesters the committee can see.
If you’re short on one or two courses, you have two honest options. Take them in India before you apply, as courses that appear on an official university transcript the evaluator can read, or accept them as leveling courses at FSU and budget USD 2,545 for every extra month in Tallahassee. The first is far cheaper in rupees.
Seven rules that reject or delay Indian files
Treat a three-year BSc as unconfirmed until the evaluation says comparable
The programme page asks for“A bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an accredited university. Questions about degree equivalency should be directed to graduateadmissions@fsu.edu.”FSU Health, Nutrition, and Food Sciences
No FSU page says whether a three-year Indian BSc counts, and that’s the usual degree for Indian nutrition graduates (BSc Home Science, BSc Food Science and Nutrition). A four-year BSc or BTech is the safe case. A three-year degree followed by an Indian MSc may fit FSU’s graduate-degree route, but FSU hasn’t said so either. Get the NACES report first and pay the fee after.
Don't convert your percentage yourself; FSU counts only the upper-division terms
FSU’s Graduate School explains how it counts the 3.0“The Upper-division undergraduate GPA includes the entire term in which you attempted your 60th credit hour and continues until completion of the baccalaureate degree.”FSU Graduate School
FSU publishes no percentage-to-GPA table for Indian marks. The evaluator works out the figure, so your later years weigh most and a weak first year may count for less. How an evaluator maps a three-year or four-year Indian degree onto FSU’s 60-credit line isn’t published, so don’t quote a self-converted GPA in your statement.
A missing prerequisite costs semesters, and every extra month costs about INR 2.44 lakh
The department says gaps can be filled during the master’s, with a warning“If electing to take these courses while in the graduate program (leveling courses), it may take additional time to complete the other degree requirements due to sequencing of classes.”FSU Health, Nutrition, and Food Sciences
The grade floors are specific. Science of Nutrition needs a B- and Anatomy and Physiology I a C+. Indian marksheets don’t carry letter grades, so the evaluator’s conversion decides whether you clear them. At FSU’s own living estimate, each extra month in Tallahassee costs USD 2,545.
Follow the programme page on the GRE, but get the waiver in writing
The programme page says the GRE is waived for MS applicants. The 2026-27 Graduate Bulletin still says admission“requires an upper-division GPA of 3.0 and recommended minimum Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores of 150 on the Quantitative Reasoning section, 150 on the Verbal Reasoning section, and 4.0 on the Writing section.”FSU Graduate Bulletin 2026-27
The programme page is the department’s current admissions page and matches the Graduate School’s rule of no university-wide test for master’s, so we follow it. One email to HNFS-grad@fsu.edu settles it.
The dietetic internship isn't open on an Indian degree alone
The department is blunt about it“Earning a master’s degree alone will not satisfy eligibility requirements to sit for the RDN examination.”FSU Department of Health, Nutrition, and Food Sciences
The internship needs a DPD verification statement from an ACEND-accredited programme. The Commission on Dietetic Registration says a foreign degree must first be evaluated and then reviewed by an ACEND programme director, who sets the extra coursework. Since 1 January 2024 the exam also needs a graduate degree. For Fall 2027 the internship route closes on 1 November 2026, so treat it as a later option at best.
Submit by 15 January 2027, not 1 February, and never on the 1 April date
The department’s international date is 1 February 2027, but FSU’s Graduate School says“Please be aware that FSU has a priority international deadline to receive applications by January 15th for consideration. However, some programs may have an earlier deadline”FSU Graduate School
The 1 April date on the same table is the regular deadline, and the same page asks international applicants to send everything about six months before term so the I-20 and visa have time. Offers are for one term only, so missing Fall 2027 means a fresh application.
Check that the I-20 says CIP 30.1901 before counting on the STEM extension
FSU’s international office lists this master’s as Nutrition and Food Science, CIP 30.1901, and 30.1901 Nutrition Sciences is on the DHS STEM list. FSU’s own Fact Book reports the same degree as 513101 Food and Nutrition, and 51.3101 isn’t on that list. STEM OPT follows the code printed on the I-20, so read it the day the I-20 arrives and raise it with FSU at once if it’s wrong.
When and how should you apply for Fall 2027 at FSU?
Three hand-overs sit outside FSU, the credential evaluator, the English test body and your two referees, and all three must land before the department’s 1 February 2027 international date. Work back from 15 January 2027 instead, FSU’s priority international date, because the I-20 and a US visa slot still have to follow the offer.
You apply once through FSU's graduate application and pay USD 30, then upload a statement of purpose naming food science or nutrition science, a CV and two referee contacts, while transcripts reach FSU through a NACES evaluator and English scores come straight from the test body.
| Start by | Task | Takes | Why this date |
|---|---|---|---|
| 26 Nov 2026 | Take IELTS or TOEFL | 60 days | Preparation, a test date and scores sent to FSU. Our estimate. |
| 27 Nov 2026 | Audit prerequisites against your marksheets | 14 days | Map chemistry, biochemistry and nutrition or food courses to the department's list. |
| 11 Dec 2026 | Order the NACES evaluation | 45 days | Your university sends transcripts, then the evaluator reports to FSU. Observed, not published. |
| 04 Jan 2027 | Line up two academic referees | 21 days | They need work email addresses and time to upload. |
| 11 Jan 2027 | Write the statement of purpose | 14 days | Name the specialisation and the faculty research you want to join. |
| 25 Jan 2027 | Submit and pay USD 30 | 7 days | The file counts only when every item and the fee are in. |
The allowances are Nbyula planning estimates, not processing times published by Florida State University.
Your university registrar releases transcripts to the evaluator, the evaluator sends FSU a course-by-course report, the test body sends scores, your referees upload letters, and the department’s committee decides. After the offer, FSU’s Center for Global Engagement issues the I-20 once you’ve shown the funds, and only then can you pay the SEVIS fee and book a visa interview in India.
The statement of purpose carries more weight here than usual, because it’s where you commit to a lane. The department wants to know why your background fits and why FSU, suggests reading HNFS faculty research if you’re interested in a thesis, and asks DPD holders to say whether they’ll apply to the internship.
If you do hold a US DPD statement, the order changes. The MS application must be complete by 1 November 2026 for a Fall 2027 internship start, the DICAS application follows by 15 January 2027, and a separate selection committee decides the internship after the MS offer.
FSU doesn’t defer offers. Miss Fall 2027 and you reapply, for Spring 2028 (international date 1 July 2027) or for Fall 2028. There’s no summer intake.
What jobs and pay can an FSU Food and Nutrition graduate expect?
FSU publishes no placement rate, salary or employer list for this programme, so the figures below are US occupation data, not FSU results. The Bureau of Labor Statistics puts food scientists and technologists at a median USD 88,720 and dietitians and nutritionists at USD 76,400 in May 2025, and the dietitian job usually needs a licence.
| Measure | Figure | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Placement rate, this programme | Not published | None on any FSU page checked, 24 September 2026 |
| Food scientists and technologists | USD 88,720 | US median wage, May 2025. Closest to the food science lane |
| Dietitians and nutritionists | USD 76,400 | US median wage, May 2025. Usually needs a state licence |
| Dietitian job growth | 8% | BLS projection for 2025 to 2035, 86,300 jobs in 2025 |
| Master's degrees awarded | 11 | FSU Fact Book, Food and Nutrition, 2024-25, all nationalities |
| Work permission after the degree | 12 + 24 months | OPT plus the STEM extension, only if the I-20 carries CIP 30.1901 |
| H-1B master's cap | 20,000 extra | USCIS places for US master's graduates, drawn by wage level |
BLS figures are US-wide medians for everyone in the occupation, not FSU graduates, and a US dietitian post needs the internship route this page describes.
The two lanes lead to different occupations. Food science feeds the food scientist and technologist occupation, which the BLS projects to grow 6% from 2025 to 2035. Clinical dietitian work needs the RDN credential, and FSU notes that Florida also requires a state licence to practise dietetics.
For the H-1B, a US master’s puts you in a second lottery pool of 20,000. The USD 100,000 proclamation payment doesn’t apply when USCIS grants a change of status inside the US, and a court order blocks it for now, though DHS says it will collect it if the order is lifted. A separate USD 103,265 fee on every cap-subject petition is only a proposal.
Timing matters on OPT. USCIS lets you apply up to 90 days before you finish and no later than 60 days after, and any OPT used during the course comes off the 12 months. A May 2029 finish puts your first H-1B lottery in the spring of 2029 if an employer registers you, with the STEM extension covering two more seasons if the CIP code on the I-20 is 30.1901.
The dietetic internship page states targets such as 80% of graduates employed in the field within 12 months. Those are accreditation objectives, not published results, so we don’t use them as outcomes.
Where is FSU ranked, and is food science ranked separately?
ShanghaiRanking’s 2026 subject tables rank 28 FSU subjects, and neither food science nor nutrition is one of them. Overall, FSU is 301-350 in THE’s 2026 table, 301-400 in ARWU 2026 and #549 in QS 2026. None of these measures this department, and none of them is an admission rule.
Who is the FSU MS in Food and Nutrition right for?
It suits an Indian science graduate who already has the chemistry and a nutrition or food core, and who wants a research-leaning US master’s with STEM work rights. It doesn’t suit someone who needs funding, or who wants to be a US registered dietitian without holding a US DPD statement.
| Verdict | Your background | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Strong fit | Four-year BTech or BSc Food Technology with organic chemistry, biochemistry and microbiology | It matches the food science list almost line for line, and food scientists carry the higher of the two BLS medians. |
| Strong fit | Four-year BSc Nutrition or Clinical Nutrition with biochemistry and physiology, aiming at a thesis or a PhD | It fits the nutrition science core, and strong students can be considered for a bypass to the PhD after year one. |
| Needs evidence | Three-year BSc Home Science or Food Science and Nutrition | FSU has no rule on three-year degrees, so the evaluation decides, and Organic Chemistry II or metabolism is often missing. |
| Needs evidence | BSc Microbiology, Biochemistry or BPharm moving into food | The chemistry is there, but Foods and Food Science with lab usually aren't, and they become leveling courses. |
| Do not shortlist | Wants to work as a US registered dietitian and holds no US DPD statement | The internship needs that statement, and FSU says the master's alone doesn't qualify you for the exam. |
| Do not shortlist | Needs an assistantship or waiver to afford the degree | Teaching assistantships favour doctoral students, and the plan here is INR 101.50 lakh with no funding. |
Pick the lane by transcript, not by job title. The food science core is food preservation, food microbiology and selected topics in food technology. The nutrition core is carbohydrates, fats and proteins, then vitamins and minerals. Switching lanes later means picking up the other lane’s prerequisites.
If sports nutrition is what you’re really after, look at FSU’s MS in Exercise Physiology instead. It has a Sports Nutrition major, it’s the other degree the dietetic internship runs through, and it has its own prerequisites and curriculum. Pick before you apply, because FSU asks for a fresh application if you want to switch to a different major.
The PhD bypass is real but narrow. FSU says it may be possible after the first year for exemplary master’s students, and it depends on first-year grades and faculty backing, so don’t choose the master’s as a cheap way into a funded doctorate.
What do you study in the FSU MS in Food and Nutrition?
Both specialisations share a seminar, a research methods course and a 4-credit statistics course, then split into their own core. The August 2025 curriculum sheets expect you to rectify missing chemistry, biochemistry or nutrition background before the advanced courses, which is where a thin prerequisite audit turns into extra semesters.

- Nutrition science takes 10 core credits, 18 elective credits on the coursework-only track (or 12 plus a 6-credit thesis) and one 4-credit statistics course
- Food science takes 13 core credits, 6 departmental and 3 outside elective credits, 4 statistics credits and either a 6-credit thesis or 6 more elective credits
- Coursework-only students need 21 letter-graded credits and 70% on the comprehensive exam, with one retake; thesis students need 18 letter-graded credits
- Everyone starts on the coursework-only track, and the thesis track opens after the first semester with faculty support
FSU’s own credit totals don’t agree. The Graduate Bulletin gives 32 credits for nutrition science, 33 for food science and 47 with the internship. The curriculum sheets state 31, 31 and 49, and the blocks on those sheets add up to 32, 32 and 50 because both statistics courses carry 4 credits. This page costs 32.
Outside electives in food science can be changed by your supervisory committee, so the chemistry and molecular biology list above is a starting set rather than a fixed menu.
Should you shortlist FSU's MS in Food and Nutrition?
Shortlist it if your transcript already carries organic chemistry, biochemistry and a nutrition or food science core, and you can pay your own way. The department reads graded prerequisites course by course, and a gap becomes a leveling course that adds time. The degree itself won’t make you a US registered dietitian.
What you get is a small department, 11 master's degrees in 2024-25, with two clear lanes. Food science is preservation, food microbiology and chemistry electives. Nutrition science is macronutrient and micronutrient metabolism, medical nutrition therapy and exercise nutrition. The cost is that you commit to a lane in your statement of purpose, and the two cores share only the seminar and the research methods course.
Two things are genuinely hard here. The dietetic internship, which is what turns this degree into a US dietitian career, needs a Didactic Program in Dietetics verification statement from an ACEND-accredited programme, which an ordinary Indian nutrition degree doesn't come with, and FSU says the master's alone won't make you eligible for the registration exam. And the money is almost all yours. Teaching assistantships go preferentially to doctoral students, and the department handbook ties out-of-state waivers to an assistantship in the first year, so the INR 101.50 lakh plan should assume no funding at all.
- The FSU MS in Food and Nutrition costs about INR 101.50 lakh (USD 106,025.64) for 32 credit hours over 22 months at the Fall 2027 rate of USD 1,281.77 per credit hour.
- International applicants should submit by 15 January 2027, ahead of the department's 1 February 2027 international date.
- Entry needs a 3.0 upper-division GPA and graded prerequisites such as Science of Nutrition at B- and Organic Chemistry I and II with lab.
- The GRE is waived for MS applicants, although the 2026-27 bulletin still recommends 150 Verbal, 150 Quantitative and 4.0 Writing.
- The dietetic internship adds 15 to 18 credits and needs a US DPD verification statement, so the master's alone won't make an Indian graduate eligible for the RDN exam.
- FSU lists the degree under STEM CIP 30.1901, which allows 12 months of OPT plus a 24-month STEM extension when the I-20 carries that code.
Frequently asked questions
What is the total cost of MS Food and Nutrition at FSU for Indian students?
Plan for about INR 101.50 lakh, or USD 106,025.64, for Fall 2027 entry. That covers 32 credit hours at USD 1,281.77 each, flat fees, 22 months of living at FSU's own estimate, two years of compulsory health insurance, books, and the application, SEVIS and visa fees, converted at INR 95.7310 per USD.
Is GRE required for MS Nutrition and Food Science at Florida State University?
No. FSU's programme page says the GRE is waived for MS applicants. The 2026-27 Graduate Bulletin still recommends 150 Verbal, 150 Quantitative and 4.0 Writing, so ask the department to confirm the waiver by email before you decide not to test. Doctoral applicants follow a separate rule.
What is the FSU Food and Nutrition deadline for international students for Fall 2027?
The department's international date is 1 February 2027, and FSU's Graduate School lists 15 January as its priority international deadline, so aim for 15 January 2027. Spring 2028 entry is also offered, with an international date of 1 July 2027. There's no summer intake, and offers can't be deferred.
Does FSU accept a 3-year BSc Home Science for the MS Food and Nutrition?
FSU hasn't published a rule either way. It asks for a bachelor's degree or equivalent, comparable to a US degree, with a 3.0 upper-division GPA, and a NACES course-by-course evaluation decides. Get that report before paying the USD 30 application fee. A four-year BSc or BTech is the safer case.
Can I become a registered dietitian in the US after this master's?
Only through FSU's dietetic internship route, and that needs a US Didactic Program in Dietetics verification statement before you apply. FSU says the master's alone doesn't qualify you for the RDN exam. An Indian degree must first be evaluated, and an ACEND-accredited programme then decides what extra coursework you need to earn that statement.
Is FSU MS Food and Nutrition a STEM course with 3 years of OPT?
FSU's international office lists this master's under CIP 30.1901, which is on the DHS STEM list, so you'd get 12 months of OPT plus a 24-month STEM extension. FSU's Fact Book reports the degree under 51.3101, which isn't STEM, so check the code printed on your I-20.
Can Indian students get an assistantship or tuition waiver in this programme?
Don't plan on one. The department gives teaching assistantships to doctoral students first, and research assistantships depend on a faculty member taking on a thesis student. The HNFS handbook says out-of-state tuition waivers go only to students who get an assistantship in their first academic year.
Which undergraduate courses do I need for FSU MS Food Science?
The department recommends Foods with lab, Food Science with lab, Organic Chemistry I and II with lab, Survey of Biochemistry with lab and Microbiology, each at C or better. Missing ones can be taken as leveling courses during the master's, but FSU warns this may add time to the degree.
