What is the FSU MS in Electrical Engineering?
FSU’s MS in Electrical Engineering is a 30-credit-hour degree from the ECE department of the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering in Tallahassee, for graduates in electrical engineering or a close branch. At FSU’s Fall 2027 per-credit price, the course work costs USD 38,453. With living, insurance and visa fees, two years come to about INR 99.05 lakh.
With your adviser you pick one of ECE’s four elective areas, which are power, energy and electronic materials, computer engineering, and systems, control and communication. You finish either with a thesis of at least six credits or with a comprehensive exam built on a 40-page literature review. This page is written for the Fall 2027 intake. The department hasn’t said whether its GRE waiver runs past Fall 2026, and FSU hasn’t yet published its Fall 2027 I-20 funding figure.
How much does the FSU MS Electrical Engineering cost in total?
Plan on about INR 99.05 lakh for the full two years, not the USD 21,179 a year that still circulates online. That older figure uses FSU’s 2025-26 rate. At the Fall 2027 rate of USD 1,281.77 a credit hour, the 30 credits alone come to USD 38,453, before rent, food or the insurance FSU won’t let you waive.
| Item | INR | Local currency | When it is due |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tuition and per-credit fees, 30 credits at USD 1,281.77 | INR 36.81 lakh | USD 38,453.10 | Each semester, by credits taken |
| Facility and FSUCard fees, 4 semesters at USD 25 | INR 9,573 | USD 100 | With each semester's bill |
| Living in Tallahassee, 22 months at USD 2,545 | INR 53.60 lakh | USD 55,990 | Monthly, August 2027 to May 2029 |
| Books and supplies, 4 semesters at USD 690 | INR 2.64 lakh | USD 2,760 | Start of each semester |
| FSU health insurance, 2 years at USD 2,797 | INR 5.36 lakh | USD 5,594 | Billed each year, no waiver |
| Application fee | INR 2,872 | USD 30 | When you apply |
| SEVIS I-901 fee | INR 33,506 | USD 350 | Before the visa interview |
| US student visa fee | INR 17,710 | USD 185 | When you book the interview |
| Full programme, four semesters | INR 99.05 lakh | USD 103,462.10 | August 2027 to May 2029 |
FSU's 2026 I-20 table asks a graduate student to show USD 49,944 for the first year, and that money stays in your account rather than adding to the bill. The USD 250 visa integrity fee is in US law, but we couldn't confirm on 24 September 2026 that it's being collected, so it isn't in the total. Converted at INR 95.7310 per USD, the FBIL reference rate for 23 September 2026 shown on rbi.org.in. Living uses FSU's 2026-27 off-campus graduate budget of USD 22,906 for nine months, spread at USD 2,545 a month across 22 months including summer 2028, and flights are excluded.
Why four semesters? The department publishes no term-by-term plan. FSU builds a graduate I-20 on 9 credit hours each fall and spring, and 30 credits at that load take four semesters, Fall 2027 to Spring 2029. If your adviser lets you carry 12 credits in two terms, you could finish in December 2028 and skip five months of living, about USD 12,725 or INR 12.18 lakh. That’s our arithmetic, not an FSU plan, so keep the cash for four semesters ready.
The table holds the Fall 2027 rate flat for all four semesters. FSU’s Board of Trustees approved the Fall 2027 fee rise on 28 August 2026, and the same regulation schedules another small rise in local fees for 2028-29, so your second year will cost a little more than shown. FSU’s international office tells students to allow for possible rises of 15% a year.
A teaching or research assistantship would change this table, because FSU reserves out-of-state tuition waivers for graduate assistants. Don’t budget on one. The ECE funding page says funds are limited and doctoral students usually get priority, and the college says assistantships are typically reserved for PhD students, with some room for competitive MS thesis students. Even a waived student still pays per-credit fees, the flat fees and USD 2,797 a year of insurance.
The small rows add up faster than they look. The USD 30 application fee can’t be waived and is charged per application, so applying to both FSU and FAMU only doubles it. The USD 350 SEVIS fee is paid online before the interview and the USD 185 visa fee when you book the slot, both months before your first FSU bill. Keep about INR 54,000 aside for these three.
Can an Indian BTech graduate get into the FSU MS Electrical Engineering?
Yes, if your bachelor’s is in electrical engineering or a closely related branch and your grades after the first 60 credit hours average 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. That average comes from a NACES course-by-course evaluation, not from your marksheet. A degree in another field can also bring undergraduate catch-up courses that you must pass with a B.
| Requirement | Published rule | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor's subject | BS or equivalent in electrical engineering or a closely related discipline | Check your branch against EE core subjects before applying |
| Three-year degree (India) | No FSU page says whether a three-year bachelor's is comparable; the evaluation decides | Get the evaluation before paying the USD 30 fee |
| Upper-division GPA | 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for all work beyond the first 60 semester hours | Ask the evaluator to show the upper-division GPA separately |
| Catch-up courses | Non-EE graduates may have to pass department-set undergraduate courses with a B or better | Budget an extra semester if your degree isn't EE, EEE or ECE |
| Credential evaluation (India) | Official course-by-course NACES evaluation; unofficial international transcripts are not reviewed | Order it from the link on your FSU status page |
| GRE | Waiver published through Fall 2026; bulletin lists 148 quantitative and 145 verbal; Fall 2027 not stated | Get the Fall 2027 position in writing, or book the GRE |
| English test (India) | IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 4.0 on the new scale, or PTE 55; India is not exempt | Send official scores to FSU code 5219 |
| Documents | Statement of purpose, CV and three signed letters on letterhead | Name research areas that match an ECE elective group |
| Proof of funds (India) | USD 49,944 for the first year on FSU's 2026 I-20 table | Get bank letters dated within six months, signed by a manager |
| Teaching assistantship | TOEFL speaking 26, or 5.0 on the new scale, or FSU SPEAK 45, and a complete file by 1 March for fall | Aim for 26 in speaking if you want a TA |
The department reads your file only after FSU’s admissions office has it complete, and the joint college calls this a two-fold evaluation. The university decides whether you’re eligible for graduate study, and ECE decides whether you’re admissible to the degree. A complete file means the evaluation, test scores, three letters, the statement and the fee are all in.
The subject rule matters more here than in most FSU master’s programmes. The bulletin describes the degree as advanced coursework with a moderate degree of breadth, so an instrumentation or mechatronics graduate who has missed circuits, signals or electromagnetics may be asked to clear undergraduate courses first, each with a B. Those courses cost the same per credit and don’t count toward the 30.
One old document can mislead you. The department still links a 2020-2021 graduate handbook as its current handbook, and its English and GRE lines predate the 2026 TOEFL scale and the waiver. Use the admission page and the 2026-27 bulletin for rules, and the handbook only for how the comprehensive exam and thesis run.
Choose your English test with the TA rule in mind. The admission floor is IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 4.0, but a teaching assistantship needs a TOEFL speaking score of 26, which FSU’s general bulletin restates as 5.0 for tests taken from 21 January 2026, or a pass on FSU’s SPEAK test after you arrive. If a TA matters to you, TOEFL from the start keeps that route open without another test in Tallahassee.
Five rules that stop Indian files
1 July is not your deadline, 15 May is the last realistic day
The department’s table shows a 1 July final deadline for the fall MS. The line above it is the one that governs an applicant in India.“May 15 is the deadline for international students living outside the United States to apply for an I-20 for the fall semester.”FAMU-FSU Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering
Aim for 15 January, the date the same page encourages.Treat the GRE as required until ECE confirms Fall 2027 in writing
The admission page’s banner says the GRE is waived for all engineering master’s applicants, with no end date. Lower down, the same page is narrower.“The GRE requirement has been waived (and extended) for all engineering master’s applicants through Fall 2026.”FAMU-FSU Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering
The 2026-27 bulletin still sets 148 quantitative and 145 verbal, waivable only under special circumstances, and it names GRE scores among the things used to award assistantships. Email the graduate office, and book a test date if no clear answer comes by November.English being an official language of India won't exempt you
The department page asks for a test when an applicant’s country’s official language is not English, which reads as if an Indian applicant might escape it. The Graduate School’s exempt-country list doesn’t include India, and its FAQ lets only a US bachelor’s or master’s waive the test. Book IELTS, TOEFL or PTE, and use the new TOEFL scale, where FSU wants 4.0, not the old 80.
A three-year BSc needs its evaluation before its application
FSU asks for a bachelor’s that is comparable to a US degree and decides that from a NACES evaluation. The department adds its own subject rule, a BS in electrical engineering or a closely related discipline, and the option pages still use ABET wording that a BSc Electronics can’t meet. Neither page settles the three-year case. Order the evaluation first, and apply only if it calls your degree equivalent to a US bachelor’s. A four-year BE or BTech is the safe case.
Your aggregate isn't the number FSU checks
FSU counts upper-division work only.“The Upper-division undergraduate GPA includes the entire term in which you attempted your 60th credit hour and continues until completion of the baccalaureate degree.”FSU Graduate School
FSU publishes no table that turns an Indian percentage or CGPA into a 4.0 figure, so the evaluator’s conversion is the one that counts. A weak first year hurts less than you’d think. A weak final year hurts more, because it sits entirely inside the counted window.
How do you apply to the FSU MS Electrical Engineering from India?
There are three hand-overs. You apply to FSU, not to the department. A NACES evaluator turns your transcripts into a US GPA, and only then does ECE read the file. Work backwards from 15 January 2027, the date the department encourages international applicants to meet, and treat 15 May as the day the fall door shuts.
Choose FSU or FAMU once, because the diploma comes from the university you apply through. Submit the FSU graduate application with the USD 30 fee, order the evaluation from your status page, send test scores to code 5219, add three letters and your statement, and after admission FSU's international office issues the I-20 against your proof of funds.
| Start by | Task | Takes | Why this date |
|---|---|---|---|
| 09 Nov 2026 | Take IELTS, TOEFL or PTE | 60 days | Our estimate, with room for one retake if a band falls short of 6.5. |
| 09 Nov 2026 | Collect official transcripts and degree certificate | 30 days | Observed. Indian universities often take weeks to issue attested transcripts. |
| 24 Nov 2026 | Settle the GRE question | 45 days | Our estimate. Ask ECE about Fall 2027 in writing and sit the test if the reply is unclear. |
| 09 Dec 2026 | Get the NACES course-by-course evaluation | 30 days | Our estimate. FSU won't review an international file until it arrives. |
| 18 Dec 2026 | Write the statement and brief three referees | 21 days | Our estimate. Referees must sign on official letterhead. |
| 08 Jan 2027 | Submit the FSU graduate application | 7 days | Pay the USD 30 fee and check every item shows as received. |
The allowances are Nbyula planning estimates, not processing times published by Florida State University.
Apply through FSU or FAMU, not both. The department says the programme and coursework are the same either way, but you’ll earn a diploma from one university only, and the two sets of admission rules differ. FAMU’s route lists Duolingo at 120 and says every applicant must present GRE scores. FSU’s route doesn’t list Duolingo. This page follows the FSU route.
Filing by 15 January does two jobs. It meets the date ECE sets for international applicants, and it sits well before the 1 March cut-off for fall TA consideration. The department says TA funding isn’t usually offered to spring or summer starters. Admission at FSU is term-specific, so a missed fall means applying again, not deferring.
Your statement of purpose does more work here than at a coursework-only school. The department asks for research and career goals and why your training fits the college, and the thesis route needs an adviser within a semester. Name two or three faculty and one elective area, and pick referees who can speak to your lab or project work.
An application sent on 15 May still has to be reviewed and admitted, then the I-20 issued, the SEVIS fee paid and a visa interview booked, all before classes start in late August. Treat 15 May as the last day, not a target.
What jobs and pay can an FSU electrical engineering master's lead to?
FSU publishes no placement rate, salary or employer list for this master’s. What’s solid is occupation data and the visa route. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median electrical engineer’s pay at USD 120,630 in May 2025, and CIP code 14.1001 is on the DHS STEM list, allowing up to three years of OPT.
| Measure | Figure | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| FSU placement rate for this MS | Not published | Checked the ECE admission, option, course and funding pages, the 2026-27 bulletin and the 2020-21 handbook |
| Median pay, electrical engineers | USD 120,630 | BLS, May 2025, every US electrical engineer, not FSU graduates |
| Median pay, electronics engineers | USD 130,220 | BLS, May 2025, electronics engineers except computer |
| Job growth, 2025 to 2035 | 8% | BLS projection for electrical and electronics engineers, about 16,300 openings a year |
| Post-study work | 12 + 24 months | OPT plus the STEM extension; CIP 14.1001 is on the DHS list updated 22 July 2024 |
| FSU graduates in 2024-25 | 13 | FSU master's degrees in Electrical Engineering, 2025-26 Fact Book |
| H-1B master's cap | 20,000 extra | Separate allocation for US master's holders; selection weighted by wage level from FY 2027 |
No row here is an FSU placement figure. The pay rows describe the whole US occupation, and the graduate count covers FSU degrees only, not FAMU ones.
The department’s 2024 annual report says its graduates are “highly sought after, receiving multiple job offers”. It gives no number, no year and no split between bachelor’s, master’s and PhD graduates, so it isn’t in the table. With 13 FSU master’s graduates a year, a programme-level rate would rest on a handful of people anyway.
If power is your field, the strongest link is the Center for Advanced Power Systems. The bulletin says it serves electric ship, transportation and utility systems and runs a 5 MW hardware-in-the-loop simulator and a 0 to 24 kV MVDC system. A thesis in a lab like that is the likeliest route to a research assistantship and to a CV that power utilities and defence contractors read, though no page promises either.
BLS gives a bachelor’s as the usual entry qualification for electrical engineers and says only that some employers may prefer a master’s. So the pay value of this degree comes more from what you specialise in than from the letters MS. That’s one more reason to settle your elective area in the first semester rather than the third.
The H-1B route changed in 2025 and 2026. A USD 100,000 payment applies to some petitions for people outside the US, but a change of status granted inside the US from OPT isn’t covered, and a June 2026 court order has stopped collection for now, though USCIS says DHS still plans to collect if the order is lifted. A separate USD 103,265 fee, proposed in August 2026, would cover every cap petition if it becomes final.
Where does FSU rank for engineering?
Rankings won’t decide your admission, and none ranks this degree on its own. Times Higher Education puts FSU in the 251 to 300 band for Engineering in 2026, scoring the university’s engineering research as a whole. We couldn’t open QS’s electrical engineering table on its own site, so the only QS figure here is FSU’s overall 549.
| Publisher | Position | Table and year |
|---|---|---|
| Times Higher Education | 251 to 300 | World University Rankings by Subject 2026, Engineering |
| Times Higher Education | 301 to 350 | World University Rankings 2026 |
| QS | 549 | World University Rankings 2026 |
Who should pick the FSU MS Electrical Engineering, and who shouldn't?
It suits an EEE or ECE graduate who already knows which corner of the field they want, power above all, and can pay for two years without an assistantship. It doesn't suit someone after a quick coursework-only degree, a guaranteed stipend or a route around the subject rule.
| Verdict | Your background | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Strong fit | BTech EEE with power systems or power electronics electives | Power has the longest elective list of the four areas, and CAPS gives thesis students a working grid lab. |
| Strong fit | BTech ECE aiming at signal processing, communications or embedded hardware | Signal and System Analysis and Computer System Architecture are both core choices, and the systems area covers DSP, coding and random processes. |
| Needs evidence | Instrumentation, mechatronics or physics graduate | Closely related is the department's call, and it can require undergraduate EE courses with a B before graduate work starts. |
| Needs evidence | Applicant who can only afford it with a TA | TAs go to doctoral students first, need TOEFL speaking 26, and the fall funding cut-off is 1 March. |
| Do not shortlist | Anyone wanting coursework only, with no research writing | The non-thesis route still ends in a 40-page literature review and an oral exam, with two attempts. |
| Do not shortlist | Three-year BSc Electronics graduate with no master's | No FSU page accepts the degree, the department asks for an engineering bachelor's, and you'd pay fees on an unconfirmed case. |
The first two rows share a habit. Both arrive knowing their research area, which matters because the thesis route has you naming an adviser within your first term. Someone who spends that term browsing loses the head start.
The funding row is amber, not green, for a reason. The department says it can’t answer emails about TA chances and that research assistantships come from individual professors, so the only real move before admission is to read faculty pages and write to two or three whose work matches yours.
The amber row for instrumentation and mechatronics graduates isn’t a polite no. Many such transcripts carry control systems, signals and electronics, which is exactly the ground the core courses build on. What decides it is whether ECE lists catch-up courses in your admission letter, and each of those adds cost without adding credit toward the 30.
What will you study in the FSU MS Electrical Engineering?
Thirty credit hours, built from two of four core courses, one advanced maths course and at least two electives in one area, then either six thesis credits or more coursework and the comprehensive exam. Almost every course carries 3 credits, and a no-credit graduate seminar runs every semester you’re enrolled.

- Take at least two of the four core courses and one advanced maths course, 5000 level or above.
- Take at least two electives from the area you choose with your adviser.
- On the thesis route, take at least 6 thesis credits and 15 letter-graded credits, an adviser by the end of the first semester and a plan of study by 12 credits.
- On the non-thesis route, get written approval to skip the thesis, take 24 of 30 credits in EEL or EEE courses taken at the department, take no directed study, and pass the comprehensive exam.
- Transfer credit is capped at 6 hours with a B or better.
The list above is everything the department names on its graduate courses page. Many electives share the special-topics code EEL 5930, which means the title decides the content and not every one runs each term. The department also warns that some EEL codes have moved to EEE, so search both when you register.
The comprehensive exam deserves a plan of its own. You write a 40-page literature review on a topic your adviser sets, answer the committee’s written questions within two weeks, then defend both in an oral within a week. It’s research writing in all but name, which is why a coursework-minded student should read this row before applying.
Should you shortlist the FSU MS Electrical Engineering?
Shortlist it if you hold a BE or BTech in electrical, electronics or a close branch with strong final-year marks, and you can file by mid-January. The department checks a 3.0 GPA on work after your first 60 credit hours, and the 15 May I-20 cut-off for applicants outside the US ends your fall chance.
What you get is a compact 30-credit degree with room to specialise, from power electronics and grid integration to RF circuits, signal processing and embedded hardware, plus a STEM-listed code that allows up to 36 months of OPT. What it costs you is time to settle in. The thesis route needs an adviser by the end of your first semester, so you'll be choosing a research lane within four months of landing.
Three things are genuinely hard here. The GRE position for Fall 2027 isn't published anywhere. The department's waiver runs through Fall 2026, and the 2026-27 bulletin still lists 148 quantitative and 145 verbal. Funding is thin for a master's student, because the department calls its money limited, puts doctoral students first and wants a TOEFL speaking score of 26 before any TA. And the non-thesis finish is a 40-page literature review and a five-week written and oral exam with two attempts, so if you want a coursework-only degree, this isn't it.
- The full two-year cost of the FSU MS Electrical Engineering is about INR 99.05 lakh, or USD 103,462, at Fall 2027 rates with 22 months of living.
- Tuition and per-credit fees for the 30 credit hours come to USD 38,453 at USD 1,281.77 a credit hour.
- Applicants outside the US must apply by 15 May for a fall I-20, and the department encourages international files by 15 January.
- The engineering GRE waiver is published through Fall 2026 only, and the 2026-27 bulletin still lists 148 quantitative and 145 verbal.
- The non-thesis route ends in a 40-page literature review and a five-week comprehensive exam, with two attempts allowed.
- CIP code 14.1001 is on the DHS STEM list, so graduates can apply for 12 months of OPT and a 24-month STEM extension.
Frequently asked questions
What is the total cost of MS Electrical Engineering at FSU for Indian students?
About INR 99.05 lakh for the full two years at Fall 2027 rates. That covers 30 credit hours of tuition and fees at USD 1,281.77 each, 22 months of Tallahassee living at FSU's own budget, two years of compulsory FSU insurance, and the application, SEVIS and visa fees. Flights aren't included.
Is GRE required for MS EE at FSU for Fall 2027?
Nobody has said yet. The department's GRE waiver for engineering master's applicants is published through Fall 2026, and the 2026-27 bulletin still lists minimums of 148 quantitative and 145 verbal. FSU has no university-wide GRE rule for master's. Ask the ECE graduate office in writing, and sit the GRE if the answer isn't clear.
What is the last date to apply for Fall 2027 MS EE at FSU from India?
The department's final fall deadline is 1 July, but that suits applicants already in the US. If you're applying from India, 15 May 2027 is the deadline to apply for a fall I-20, and the department encourages international applicants to submit by 15 January 2027, which also protects your TA chances.
Can I get an assistantship in FSU MS Electrical Engineering?
Possibly, but don't count on it. The department calls its funding limited and gives doctoral students priority. You need a complete application by 1 March for fall, and a TOEFL speaking score of 26 or an FSU SPEAK score of 45 before you can hold a teaching assistantship. Research assistantships come from individual professors.
Does FSU accept a three-year BSc for MS Electrical Engineering?
No FSU page says yes or no. FSU asks for a degree comparable to a US bachelor's, with a 3.0 GPA on upper-division work, and a NACES course-by-course evaluation decides comparability. The department also wants a bachelor's in electrical engineering or a closely related field, so a four-year BE or BTech is the safe case.
Should I apply to FSU or FAMU for this MS?
Apply through one only. The joint college says the programme and coursework are the same either way, but your diploma comes from the university you applied through. The admission rules differ slightly, since FAMU lists Duolingo and asks for GRE scores. The FSU route charges USD 30 and FSU's international office issues the I-20.
Is FSU MS Electrical Engineering STEM designated?
Yes. FSU codes the Electrical Engineering master's under CIP 14.1001, and that code is on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List updated on 22 July 2024. After graduating you can apply for 12 months of OPT and then a 24-month STEM extension, provided your employer meets the STEM OPT rules.
What is the non-thesis option in FSU MS EE?
It's 30 credit hours with no thesis, but it isn't pure coursework. You need written approval to skip the thesis, at least 24 credits in EEL or EEE courses, and a pass in the Master's Comprehensive Exam. That exam is a 40-page literature review, written answers to committee questions and an oral, with two attempts.
