What is the FSU MS Computer Science, and what does it cost?
FSU’s Master of Science in Computer Science is a 30 credit hour taught degree in Tallahassee, with four majors and a thesis, project or course-based finish. Tuition is charged per credit, at USD 1,281.77 a credit hour for Fall 2027 entry. Over four semesters with living, insurance and visa fees, plan for about INR 99.05 lakh.
Most Indian applicants will want the Computer Science major, which asks for courses in at least three of its four core areas of software, systems, theory and AI or machine learning. CyberAI, network administration and cyber criminology sit inside the same degree with fixed course lists. This page is written for Fall 2027, and the department hasn’t yet said whether its GRE waiver, dated to the end of 2026, carries into that cycle.
How much does the FSU MS Computer Science cost an Indian student?
About INR 99.05 lakh, or USD 103,462, for 30 credits over four semesters and 22 months in Tallahassee. The INR 20 lakh figure on aggregator sites is one year of tuition at last year’s rate, not FSU’s approved Fall 2027 per credit rate. Living costs more than the degree, because rent runs through the summer.
| Item | INR | Local currency | When it is due |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tuition and fees, 30 credits | INR 36.91 lakh | USD 38,553.10 | Each semester, about 9 credits a term |
| Living, 22 months | INR 53.60 lakh | USD 55,990 | Monthly, August 2027 to May 2029 |
| Books and supplies, 4 semesters | INR 2.64 lakh | USD 2,760 | Start of each semester |
| FSU health insurance, 2 years | INR 5.36 lakh | USD 5,594 | Billed each plan year |
| Application, SEVIS and visa fees | INR 54,000 | USD 565 | Before you fly |
| Total, 30 credits over four semesters | INR 99.05 lakh | USD 103,462.10 | Fall 2027 to Spring 2029 |
FSU’s I-20 needs proof of USD 49,944 for the first year on its 2026 table. That’s money you show, not an extra cost, and it stays yours. The USD 250 visa integrity fee is in US law but we couldn’t confirm it’s being collected on 24 September 2026, so it’s left out of the total. Converted at INR 95.7310 per USD, the FBIL reference rate for 23 September 2026 shown by the RBI. Flights and housing deposits are excluded.
Tuition is 30 credit hours at USD 1,281.77, which comes to USD 38,453.10. FSU adds a USD 20 facility fee and a USD 5 FSUCard fee in each of the four enrolled semesters. The per credit rate rose 8.9% between 2025-26 and 2026-27, and FSU’s international office tells students to allow for rises of up to 15% a year.
Living uses FSU’s 2026-27 off-campus budget of USD 22,906 for nine months, which works out to USD 2,545 a month. We’ve counted every month from August 2027 to May 2029, including the summer of 2028, because rent doesn’t stop when classes do. Insurance is FSU’s own plan at USD 2,797 a year, and F-1 students can’t waive it from 2026-27.
Two things move this total. If you haven’t got a CS bachelor’s, up to three prerequisite courses may be added, and nine credits at the graduate rate would cost USD 11,535.93, about INR 11.04 lakh. If you carry 12 credits in one semester and finish in December 2028, you save five months of living, about INR 12.18 lakh.
An assistantship changes the picture only if you win one. The department says assistants and fellows generally get a partial tuition waiver, excluding fees, plus a stipend. It doesn’t promise either to master’s students, so plan the money as self-funded.
Can an Indian student get into the FSU MS Computer Science?
Yes, with a CS or related degree, an upper-division GPA of 3.0 and IELTS 6.5 or its TOEFL or PTE equivalent. The department reads your transcript for data structures, computer organisation and operating systems, and any of those you’re missing becomes a course you owe before graduation.
Requirements in checking order
| Requirement | Published rule | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Degree | Undergraduate or graduate degree in computer science or a related field, comparable to a US bachelor's | Get a NACES course-by-course evaluation before you pay the fee |
| Three-year degree (India) | No FSU or department rule either way, the evaluation decides comparability | Apply with a four-year degree, or a three-year degree plus a master's |
| Grades (India) | 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in upper-division work, from the term with your 60th credit onwards | Ask the evaluator to calculate the upper-division GPA |
| Core CS courses | COP 4530 Data Structures, CDA 3100 Computer Organization I and COP 4610 Operating Systems, or equivalents | Match each one to a named course on your marksheet |
| Without a CS degree | COP 4530 or an equivalent course needed to be competitive | Show a graded data structures course before applying |
| GRE | Waived for master's applicants through the end of 2026, no minimum score | Get the Fall 2027 position in writing from the graduate advisor |
| English (India) | TOEFL iBT 80 if taken before 21 January 2026 or 4.0 after, IELTS 6.5, PTE 55 | Book IELTS, TOEFL or PTE, not Duolingo |
| English waiver (India) | Only for a four-year degree from an English-speaking country, and India isn't on FSU's list | Plan a test even with an English-medium degree |
| Documents | Statement of purpose, CV, three recommendation letters and a USD 30 fee | Line up three referees by November |
| Deadline | 1 January for Fall and 1 July for Spring, for international applicants | Submit by mid-December 2026 for Fall 2027 |
| Funds for the I-20 (India) | USD 49,944 for the first year on FSU's 2026 table, papers in English and under six months old | Keep the money in accounts your bank can certify on letterhead |
| Assistantship English | TOEFL 100 on the old scale to be considered, 26 in speaking to teach | Aim well above 80 if you want funding |
The department wants three letters of recommendation, a statement of purpose of one to three pages, and a CV that lists the programming languages you know. Its FAQ says falling below the university’s English minimum is an automatic denial, and that in its experience students scoring under TOEFL 95 struggle in its courses.
If you want a teaching assistantship, the English bar is higher than the admission one. The department says only a TOEFL speaking score of 26 or more fully meets its teaching requirement, and anyone else must pass FSU’s own spoken English test after arriving. An applicant chasing a teaching post is better served by TOEFL than by IELTS.
There is no published backlog rule. FSU looks at the upper-division GPA and the named courses, so a cleared backlog in a core subject still shows on the marksheet the evaluator reads.
Seven rules that decide Indian files
Plan for the GRE, because the waiver is dated to 2026
Three department pages carry the same line.“The GRE requirement has been waived for Master’s applicants through the end of 2026.”FSU Computer Science, Graduate Admission Requirements
Another department page says the waiver runs indefinitely, and the 2026-27 bulletin still says students are required to take the GRE. Fall 2027 files are reviewed from 14 January 2027. Unless the graduate advisor confirms the waiver for Fall 2027 in writing, sit the GRE by November 2026. The department sets no minimum, but says admitted students have averaged 166 in quant and that a score can help a borderline case.
Don't book Duolingo for Fall 2027
The department’s page for international applicants is blunt.“As of the Spring 2026 admission term, FSU is no longer accepting the Duolingo test.”FSU Computer Science, Instructions for International Students
Two other department pages still show Duolingo 125, one of them marked for admissions through Fall 2026. Don’t gamble a cycle on it. IELTS 6.5, TOEFL or PTE 55 are listed everywhere.
Count the prerequisite courses before you count the cost
The prerequisite rule applies at graduation, not only at admission.“For those students who do NOT have an undergraduate BS degree in Computer Science, the following courses or their equivalents at another institution must be completed before the graduate PhD CS or MS CS degree will be awarded.”FSU Computer Science, Undergraduate pre-requisites
The list is COP 4530, CDA 3100 and COP 4610, and the same page warns that a CS degree from another university can still leave one missing. The co-listed CGS courses carry credit hours that may not be applied toward the degree. The cheaper route in the bulletin is Option A, where a B- or better in the matching graduate course, for example COP 5611 for operating systems, clears the prerequisite and still counts toward the 30.
A three-year degree isn't ruled in or out
FSU asks for a degree comparable to a US bachelor’s and decides that from a NACES course-by-course evaluation. Neither the Graduate School nor the department says how it treats a three-year BSc or BCA. Get the evaluation done before you pay the application fee. A four-year BE or BTech, or a three-year degree followed by an Indian master’s, is the safer case.
The GPA that counts starts at your 60th credit
FSU’s 3.0 is not an average of your whole degree.“The Upper-division undergraduate GPA includes the entire term in which you attempted your 60th credit hour and continues until completion of the baccalaureate degree.”FSU Graduate School, Graduate Admissions
On a four-year Indian degree that’s roughly the last two years. FSU publishes no percentage or CGPA conversion of its own, so the evaluator’s upper-division figure is the number the committee sees. The department’s FAQ says admits below the university standard are rare.
Apply by 1 January, not 15 January
The department’s deadline table gives 1 January as the Fall date for international applicants and anyone seeking an assistantship. The Graduate School’s international page says 15 January, and the university’s final date is 1 July. The department’s date governs this programme, and the same page adds that there is no deferring of admission or assistantship offers.
Course-based graduates need a B+ in six of ten courses
The course-based route has its own grade rule.“A student must earn a grade of B+ or higher for at least 6 of the 10 courses in order to graduate in the course-based option.”FSU Computer Science, Thesis, Project and Course-based MS Degrees
Every graduate course also needs a B- or better to count. If you expect mixed grades, look at the project route, which the department describes without that B+ count.
How do you apply to the FSU MS Computer Science for Fall 2027?
One online application to FSU, then three hand-overs outside the university. Your college sends transcripts to a NACES evaluator, the evaluator sends its report to FSU, and the testing bodies send your scores. Work backwards from the department’s 1 January 2027 deadline, because FSU won’t review a file until the evaluation arrives.
Apply on FSU's online graduate application, choosing your major. Upload the statement of purpose and CV, add three referees and pay USD 30, then have the evaluator and testing bodies send their reports to FSU.
| Start by | Task | Takes | Why this date |
|---|---|---|---|
| 06 Nov 2026 | Get sealed transcripts from your university | 21 days | Observed lead time. Indian registrars often take three weeks, and the evaluator needs them first. |
| 10 Nov 2026 | Sit IELTS or TOEFL, and the GRE if needed | 45 days | Leave room for one retake. Scores go straight to FSU under institution code 5219. |
| 27 Nov 2026 | Get the NACES course-by-course evaluation | 28 days | FSU accepts only the official report sent by the evaluator, never an upload by you. |
| 04 Dec 2026 | Check your transcript for the three core courses | 7 days | Data structures, computer organisation and operating systems decide how many prerequisites you'll owe. |
| 04 Dec 2026 | Brief three referees | 21 days | Each gets an email from FSU's system and uploads the letter directly. |
| 11 Dec 2026 | Write the statement of purpose and CV | 14 days | One to three pages, naming the major and the research areas you want. |
| 25 Dec 2026 | Submit the FSU application and pay USD 30 | 7 days | A week's margin lets the fee email and uploads clear before 1 January. |
The allowances are Nbyula planning estimates, not processing times published by Florida State University.
The department starts reviewing Fall files on 14 January, two weeks after its deadline. Spring entry exists too, with a 1 July deadline for international applicants, so a missed January isn’t a lost year.
After a decision, the department asks you to email the Certificate of Financial Responsibility and a passport copy to FSU’s international office for the I-20. FSU’s 2026 table asks for USD 49,944 of first-year funds, with bank letters in English and dated within six months.
Admission is for one term only. If you can’t join in the term you were admitted for, you reapply.
Spring entry has its own deadline of 1 July. The Spring 2027 date has already passed, so if the department keeps the same table, the next Spring start is January 2028 with a 1 July 2027 deadline. That’s a sensible fallback for a file that isn’t ready by December, not a faster route.
Your college has to release transcripts, the evaluator has to finish, and FSU has to receive the report before anyone reads your statement. That chain is about eight weeks, so a file started in mid-November will likely miss 1 January.
What jobs and pay can an FSU MS Computer Science lead to?
FSU doesn’t publish a placement rate or salary for this degree. The closest evidence is national. US software developers earned a median USD 135,980 in May 2025, and all four majors carry a STEM code that allows up to 36 months of work on OPT.
| Measure | Figure | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| FSU placement rate for this degree | Not published | No rate, salary or employer list on the department's programme, admissions, funding or resources pages, checked 24 September 2026 |
| Software developers, US median | USD 135,980 | BLS, May 2025. Lowest 10% under USD 82,460, highest 10% over USD 214,670 |
| Information security analysts | 21% growth | BLS projection 2025 to 2035, median pay USD 129,180, the CyberAI benchmark |
| Network and systems administrators | 4% decline | BLS projection 2025 to 2035, median pay USD 99,130, the CNSA benchmark |
| Work after the degree | 12 + 24 months | OPT plus STEM OPT, because CIP 11.0101 is on the DHS STEM list. STEM OPT needs an E-Verify employer |
| H-1B master's quota | 20,000 a year | Extra cap places for US master's graduates, still decided by a wage-weighted lottery |
| FSU CS master's degrees, 2024-25 | 122 | FSU Fact Book count across all four majors, not an outcome |
BLS figures cover the whole US occupation, not FSU graduates. FSU's own figures here are counts of degrees, not jobs.
The four majors point at different job markets. BLS projects information security analyst jobs to grow 21% from 2025 to 2035, while network and computer systems administrator jobs are projected to fall 4%. Weigh that before you choose the network administration major over CyberAI.
Computer and information research scientists, the one BLS computing occupation whose typical entry level is a master’s, earned a median USD 140,300. The thesis route is the natural way toward that kind of role or a PhD, because it gives you a supervisor and a defended piece of research.
The USD 100,000 H-1B payment doesn’t apply when your employer changes your status inside the US and USCIS grants it, and a court order has blocked its collection since June 2026. A separate proposed fee of USD 103,265 would reach US master’s cap cases if it’s finalised. Check both before you graduate.
The network administration major needs a system administration internship. CIS 5949 is the course FSU uses to request curricular practical training for it, and its credits don’t count toward graduation.
The shrinking department matters here too. FSU awarded 122 computer science master’s degrees in 2024-25, most of them to students who started when the department had between 229 and 320 graduate students. With 134 enrolled in Fall 2025, your cohort will be far smaller than the one those figures describe, and the department hasn’t published anything explaining the fall.
How is FSU ranked for computer science?
US News places FSU 88th, tied, among US graduate computer science schools, as its list stood in April 2026. That’s the subject table that matters for this degree. Rankings are context for a shortlist, not an admission rule, and they say nothing about funding or jobs.
| Publisher | Position | Table and year |
|---|---|---|
| US News | #88 (tie) | Best Graduate Schools, Computer Science, as listed April 2026 |
| QS | #549 | World University Rankings 2026, overall |
| Times Higher Education | 301 to 350 | World University Rankings 2026, overall |
Who should apply to the FSU MS Computer Science, and who shouldn't?
It suits a four-year CS or IT graduate who can pay for two years and wants either a research thesis or broad coursework. It suits a non-CS engineer less well than the admission page suggests, because missing prerequisites arrive as extra courses, fees and sometimes an extra semester.
| Verdict | Your background | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Strong fit | BE or BTech in CS or IT with strong final two years | You likely owe no prerequisites, so 30 credits is the whole bill. |
| Strong fit | CS graduate who has already studied computer security | CyberAI adds cryptography, offensive security and an LLM agents course, and you can apply to it directly. |
| Needs evidence | ECE or EEE graduate with one data structures course | You meet the competitive bar, but may owe operating systems or computer organisation on top of 30 credits. |
| Needs evidence | Three-year BSc CS or BCA graduate | The NACES evaluation decides comparability, and nothing FSU publishes says which way it goes. |
| Do not shortlist | Mechanical or civil engineer with no programming courses | Without data structures you aren't competitive, and all three prerequisites would sit on top of the degree. |
| Do not shortlist | Anyone who needs an assistantship to afford it | About 110 posts served about 330 graduate students in Spring 2024, and consideration starts at TOEFL 100. |
Four majors inside one degree
| Programme | Best for | Main limit |
|---|---|---|
| Computer Science | Software, systems or AI roles, or a thesis toward a PhD | Courses in three of four core areas, three prerequisites for non-CS graduates |
| CyberAI | Security and AI security roles | Seven set courses and six or seven prerequisites, including theory of computation |
| Computer Network and System Administration | Systems and network administration | Needs a sysadmin internship, and BLS projects these jobs to shrink |
| Cyber Criminology | Digital forensics with a criminology grounding | Course-based only, built mainly for FSU's own graduates |
Pick the major before you apply, because CyberAI takes direct applications and its course list leaves little room for electives. The Computer Science major leaves the most room, needing only three core-area courses before you choose the rest.
The department page and the bulletin don’t agree on every detail of the smaller majors. The bulletin adds Discrete Mathematics II to the CyberAI prerequisites and asks four criminology courses of Cyber Criminology students where the department page says three. Ask the graduate advisor which list binds your intake.
What do you study in the FSU MS Computer Science?
Thirty credit hours of computer science at the 5000 level or above, with the core-area courses below for the Computer Science major. You then pick a thesis, a project or a course-based finish, which changes how many courses you take and what you defend.

| CIS 8966 | Master's Comprehensive Examination | 0 | Course-based route, with 10 courses |
| Degree total, any route | 30 |
- The Computer Science major needs three courses covering three of the four core areas
- The course-based route needs a B+ or better in at least 6 of the 10 courses
- Every graduate course needs a B- or better to count, and CGS courses never count
Electives come from the department’s full 5000 and 6000 level list, which includes Software Engineering, Introduction to Data Science, Advanced Data Mining, Fundamentals of Machine Learning Algorithms and Computer Graphics. Selected Topics courses under CIS 5930 and CIS 6930 count when approved, and at most one course from another department can count.
The department’s own pages disagree on the core rule for the course-based route. The programme page and the bulletin ask for three of four areas, while the course checklist asks for one course each from software, systems and theory. Taking one from each of those three satisfies both readings.
The thesis and project routes need a major professor and two more faculty members on your committee, and both end in an open defence. Find a supervisor in your first semester if you want either, because the committee has to exist before you can register for thesis or project hours.
Should you shortlist the FSU MS Computer Science?
Shortlist it if you hold a four-year CS or IT degree with data structures and operating systems on the transcript, and you can fund two years without an assistantship. The department’s own requirements page says applicants without a CS degree need at least a data structures course to be competitive, and any missing prerequisite must be cleared before graduation.
What you get is a flexible 30 credit degree with a STEM code, a Spring intake and a real choice between research and pure coursework. What you give up is predictability. The department's graduate headcount fell from 320 in Fall 2023 to 134 in Fall 2025, and FSU hasn't said why. Smaller classes are likely, but nothing suggests more funding for master's students.
Three things are genuinely hard here. The GRE waiver for master's applicants is dated to the end of 2026 on three department pages, while Fall 2027 files are reviewed from 14 January 2027, so you may need a score nobody has promised to excuse. A non-CS graduate can owe up to nine credits of undergraduate prerequisites that don't count toward the degree, about INR 11.04 lakh if taken as graduate courses. And assistantships are a long shot, with about 110 posts for about 330 graduate students in Spring 2024 and a TOEFL 100 bar just to be considered.
- FSU's MS Computer Science is 30 credit hours, billed at USD 1,281.77 a credit for Fall 2027 entry, and totals about INR 99.05 lakh over 22 months.
- Graduates without a CS bachelor's may owe three undergraduate prerequisites, worth about INR 11.04 lakh if taken as graduate courses that don't count toward the degree.
- The department's international deadline for Fall 2027 is 1 January 2027, two weeks before the Graduate School's 15 January date.
- The master's GRE waiver is dated to the end of 2026, and the department stopped accepting Duolingo from Spring 2026.
- All four majors carry CIP code 11.0101, which is on the DHS STEM list and allows 12 months of OPT plus a 24-month extension.
- Graduate headcount in the department fell from 320 in Fall 2023 to 134 in Fall 2025, while about 110 assistantships served about 330 students in Spring 2024.
Frequently asked questions
What is the total cost of MS Computer Science at FSU for Indian students?
About INR 99.05 lakh, or USD 103,462, for Fall 2027 entry. That covers 30 credits of tuition at USD 1,281.77 each, 22 months of living from August 2027 to May 2029, two years of compulsory FSU health insurance, books, the application fee, SEVIS and the visa fee, converted at INR 95.7310 per USD.
Is GRE required for MS CS at FSU for Fall 2027?
Not confirmed either way. Department pages say the master's GRE waiver runs through the end of 2026, one page says indefinitely, and the bulletin still lists the GRE as required. Fall 2027 files are reviewed from January 2027, so either get written confirmation from the graduate advisor or sit the GRE by November 2026.
Can I get into FSU MS CS without a computer science degree?
Yes, with a related degree, but you'll need COP 4530 Data Structures or an equivalent to be competitive. You must also clear Computer Organization I and Operating Systems before graduation if they aren't on your transcript. Those courses add cost unless you use the matching graduate course, which still counts toward your 30 credits.
What is the FSU MS Computer Science application deadline for international students?
For Fall 2027, the Department of Computer Science deadline is 1 January 2027 for international students and anyone seeking an assistantship. Review starts on 14 January. The Spring deadline is 1 July. The Graduate School's 15 January and the university's 1 July Fall dates are later, but the department's own date governs this programme.
Does FSU accept Duolingo for MS Computer Science?
Don't rely on it. The department's page for international applicants says FSU stopped accepting Duolingo from the Spring 2026 admission term, even though two other department pages still list a score of 125. For Fall 2027, take IELTS with 6.5 overall, TOEFL iBT with 4.0 on the new scale, or PTE with 55.
Can MS CS students at FSU get a teaching or research assistantship?
Some do, but you shouldn't plan on it. Every applicant is considered automatically, yet the department needs TOEFL 100 on the old scale for consideration, and its Spring 2024 orientation listed about 70 teaching and 40 research posts for about 330 graduate students. Assistants get a partial tuition waiver that excludes fees, plus a stipend.
Is FSU MS Computer Science STEM designated for OPT?
Yes. FSU's international office lists the master's in Computer Science, CyberAI under its old Cyber Security name, network administration and Cyber Criminology under CIP code 11.0101. That code is on the DHS STEM list dated 22 July 2024, so graduates can apply for 12 months of OPT and a 24-month STEM extension with an E-Verify employer.
Does FSU accept a three-year Indian bachelor's degree for MS CS?
FSU hasn't published a rule either way. It asks for a degree comparable to a US bachelor's with a 3.0 upper-division GPA, and a NACES course-by-course evaluation decides comparability. Get that evaluation before paying the application fee. A four-year BE or BTech, or a three-year degree plus an Indian master's, is the safer case.
